hmmm?

So presumably there's an API
or razer is scraping the hell out of things
@ThatBrazilianGuy Its a pretty well known thing here.

> How often are prices scanned? Each store is scanned every hour to make sure that you’re looking at the latest prices.
scraping i think

1:20 AM
@JourneymanGeek extremely smooth scrolling on that site for some reason O_O

2:04 AM
It's amazing what a bottle of whiskey can do to some people. Or for some people.

@JourneymanGeek was this the thing they used to bundle with amd drivers?

naw
Razer threw it together at some point cause their CEO thought it would be cool. Or so they say
there's a few razer software products that are like that

interesting...
this is almost exactly what i was thinking of doing...

2:29 AM
hm
Found two dead, mummified cockroaches in my toilet.
The deep clean I'm doing is making more sense ._.

Bob
hm
GTX 1050 is the modern budget GPU, yea?

I think so

Bob
Or RX 460

I'd much rather go 1060 tho

Bob
can't remember if 460 or 1050 was better
@JourneymanGeek that's far outside the budget here

2:32 AM
@Bob AMD tho ;p

Bob
Difference between $150-$190, vs $300
@JourneymanGeek well, he's coming from a HD7770

lol
I have a nvidia bias.

battlefield 1 is free on origin? is that right?
nope

Bob
2:54 AM
@JourneymanGeek eh... he needs VGA/DVI-A, so... current-gen might not work :P
or a new monitor

or DVI-I and an adaptor
or a DP -> VGA adaptor
also, no DVI? :(

3:36 AM
Intel Optane (3D XPoint) for caching!
I really want to get a T470 for serious productivity work.

@bwDraco and signature edition images, which is nice
No anniversery edition yet :(
(Oldschool thinkpad design with modern components. _

I know you're a huge fan of ThinkPads.

It will be a while before 3D XPoint will be commonplace as system storage, and it will not be cheap.
Smart Response Technology will be used for Optane caching.
I suspect that given the number of companies making NAND and the cost of 3D XPoint memory, it will be three to five years before another memory technology (3D XPoint or otherwise) will replace it.

3:53 AM
Dec 8 at 19:01, by bwDraco
The way I see it, the mainstream market will be on 3D TLC NAND for years to come, while premium consumer systems may have varying amounts of 3D XPoint memory.

Bob
@JourneymanGeek current gen doesn't have DVI-I anymore
@JourneymanGeek wasn't that fairly pricey?

4:06 AM
@Bob about 15 dollars on Amazon.
I have one from job -1

4:17 AM
@JourneymanGeek I have an Apple mDP to VGA adapter. It's the only Apple product I own.

5:03 AM
@bwDraco in such tiny quantities that I feel like having traditional NAND tiered storage might be faster for many workloads -- e.g. a 256GB or larger (512, even 1 TB) read/write NAND cache in front of HDD(s)
at only 16 GB, there'll be a lot of thrashing
and a lot of cache misses

@allquixotic The problem is that 3D XPoint is that it's too expensive in large quantities, and I doubt it's going to be cost-competitive with 3D TLC NAND within the next five years. Micron says the cost of 3D XPoint is about half that of DRAM but 5x that of NAND. A memory unit with 16 GB of 3D XPoint is going to cost about $40-70.
I know this is another WCCF link but this is in regard to a product announcement, not rumors: wccftech.com/…
> This is not a replacement technology. This is an invention that opens up new sorts of applications.
32 GB of 3D XPoint will likely cost at least $80-100. It's just not cost-effective, especially for OEMs/SIs, past this point.
Besides, only one manufacturer of this technology exists, and it's IMFT. It will not be licensed to other firms.

@bwDraco like what? isn't DRAM strictly faster? ... so unless you end up with more XPoint than you have DRAM, it's a waste, IMO
if I had 64 GB of DRAM I'd expect at least 128 GB of XPoint to complement
and for most consumer, enterprise and prosumer workloads.... basically everything but scientific computing... NAND SSDs are plenty fast for disk caching

5:18 AM
@allquixotic You realize this will add at least $300 to the BOM?

@bwDraco yeah, and? I can go to almost any major laptop manufacturer today and add a second SSD to the order at a cost of around $1000 and up
system76 lets you add 2 SATA 850 EVO 4 GB drives at a cool $1300-ish apiece

Right now, Intel doesn't make modules this large.
The largest Optane memory device is 32 GB.

they can't stack them or something?

It's M.2 type 2242.
Hopefully, they'll come out with larger Optane devices, but they will be nowhere near NAND price points for the next several years.
Sure, the SSD in my laptop costed me $350 when we first got it. IMFT just isn't making the necessary quantities to do this.
Besides, Intel's using Smart Response Technology to do the caching, which is itself capped at 64 GB.

5:34 AM
On Backblaze B2: I will be paying $0.44 a month to store 97.6 GB of data (the first 10 GB are free).
(88 GB @ $0.005/GB)

Bob
@JourneymanGeek huh. that's a lot cheaper than the active DVI-D to VGA adapters
@allquixotic surprisingly little, actually
for comparison, SSHDs tend to have something like 4 GB of NAND in them
ISRT only goes up to 64 GB IIRC

8 GB in most hybrid drives.
(FireCuda has 8 GB of NAND)

Bob
@bwDraco eh, last time I checked was back in 2012
decided the entire concept was dumb for most purposes. the only place it MIGHT make some sense is if you really really needed lots of storage space on a limited budget on a laptop without an additional bay.
@allquixotic wasn't reliability a bigger selling point?

5:55 AM
@Bob are modern high-quality prosumer and enterprise SSDs particularly unreliable, assuming correct TRIM configuration and optimal block size usage, alignment, etc?
I recall you saying that many of the early model failures were due to bad SATA controllers, not so much that the NAND chips themselves gave up the magic dust
but I've seen much more robust controller boards shipped with current-gen SSDs, making that less likely

SSD failure rates are pretty low these days.
Seagate Desktop HDD.15: 16% one-star reviews.
Samsung SSD 850 EVO: 3% one-star reviews.
There's a reason I buy spinning electromechanical drives locally at a B&M store and not online.

What the heck is going on with famous people dying one after another?
(via Google Now)

7:25 AM
dija know that 2017-2020 is supposed to statistically be the highest rate of baby boomer EOL so while "boomers" have been dying off left and right, the highest concentrsation is supposed to be in these next 3 years.
there are more "celebrities" well first there is 500 channels not 13 , there is youtube celebs, there are more musical artists, there is massive quantities of entertainment being created in america, while there is nothing else manufactured in america (cept some commertial jets, and military things, which (if you think about it) dont make up a balanced manufacturing.
one could look at it more like , america has gone from 1 story teller per fireside venue to every person around the fire has only a story to tell :-) and some chinese junk to sell.
so my conclusion is
A) more people who at any time had ever achieved celebrity status, are dying.
B) due to the lack of any real product being manufactured in america , there is more "celebrity"
C) there is more "entertainment" even if nobody is actually watching/clicking through it, therfore more story tellers exist, and eventually they will die.

1 hour later…
8:35 AM
yey windows update service wont run

8:50 AM
error 15105 has occurred
:/

9:37 AM
windows 10?

Win7
just restored it to the last windows update it did (we gonna wipe it shortly if i can' t fix this)
and it's still broken o_O?
Different error tho :D :D
80244023
trying windows update troubleshooter now
If anyone has ideas I'm all ears, would be nice to fix this rather than wiping

are you trying to update it? as for me that seems weird when MS will use updates to destroy it

@djsmiley2k has anyone mentioned WSUS offline update?

I had this problem on windows 10 when I couldn't download anniversary update. I ran windows update troubleshooter and restart. It was fixed

9:59 AM
@JourneymanGeek not yet
i seem to have fixed it
@AlanWatch yeah already tried that
netsh winhttp reset proxy
o_O
or proxy reset, I've forgotten already

@djsmiley2k I have an idea: use Linux ;p
And have other, different, arcane issues

:D
I can fix most things on linux tho :P
As to what the reset proxy thing did, god knows

@ThatBrazilianGuy or use haiku

Bob
10:14 AM
what was the TLA for a non-Founder's Edition nvidia card?
having a brainfart right now
oh AIB
which isn't technically correct but kinda common usage
bleh

tla?

Bob
@djsmiley2k Three Letter Acronym
also Three Letter Agency for NSA/CIA/FBI/etc

ah yus
hmmmmmmmmmmm peoples outlook being weird this morning

10:38 AM
it's decided - my next build will be custom loop :D

ooh
hard lines?

yes, that's the intention
soft tubing would probably be better, but should be able to figure out how to do hard tubing

@tereško with no hard drives appently?

not really

ah
still, not enough :P

10:49 AM
that's what NAS is for :P

Bob
hmmmmmmmmm
I have a dlink usb wifi adapter I don't remember buying
I've probably mentioned it in char but I don't remember it at all o.O
@allquixotic I thought 3dxpoint was meant to have much much greater write endurance

Insurgency is really nice
Not as hard as CS:GO but fun ^_^

Bob
11:06 AM
@HackToHell difficulty is relative
it's very much a team game

@tereško just need dry heat and careful bending
It isn't rocket surgery
hm.
Slight rocket surgery?

11:28 AM
@Bob Yeah, the barrier of entry is higher
For people not used to that genre

turns out i might have accidentally bought the VR version of project cars

Bob
12:00 PM
@HackToHell protip: as a defender, stay on the point if it's being captured
it can be fully capped but you won't lose it unless all friendlies are off the point
if you see/hear the point is being capped, run on it asap
I see too many clueless people hovering around the entrance while losing the point -_-
the point matters more than your life in push mode (you respawn anyway if you die and lose the point)

@Burgi you accidently the VR?!

lol, got screamed to cap a point, I was the last man standing and I just holed up somewhere
@Bob Ah so standing on the point blocks capture right

Bob
@HackToHell ya
@HackToHell sometimes on some maps/points you can just prone in a hallway or corner of point and wait for your team to spawn while playing dead :P

12:22 PM
@Bob ooh nice idea
I played a night map in the jungle

Bob
@HackToHell not just an idea, I've seen it done and done it myself :P

And someone kept sniping me

Bob
don't really do night mode though
@HackToHell smokes, countersniping, chuck an rpg/at4 at em

Yeah, rpg FTW
We were all dead and someone rpgd us the moment we respawned at a cap point
This game is fun

Bob
@HackToHell what game mode?
push is less spawn-campy

12:25 PM
i hate the sun

Bob
@Burgi you can replace it with a 20kW fake sun!

its blinding me and there isn't enough tree cover to hide it

@Bob 8 people vs bots
and having to cap a point
If you die, you respawn when a point is captured
Not sure about the game mode

Bob
@HackToHell oh that's just checkpoint?
don't cluster
tehre's a server setting that controls how big a cluster is before bots rpg it :P
I was talking about push (pvp)

I played a pvp one too with 32 people and respawn in waves
@Bob ah, that explains it
I keep dying in pvp, so getting used to the game against bots

12:36 PM
@Burgi did he bite you?!

wtf?

@Burgi do you have a sudden dislike of garlic?

no

Well at least someone got it!!

this is just normal geek aversion to the sun

12:58 PM
kim jong un has a fucking Steam account https://t.co/U7t2yTKdGc

wow
afk, hospital...

@Burgi good luck
urgh this is weird - got a hp probook which just bleeps, randomly
like 10 bleeps in a row then stops (it's running)
I've never heard of this kind of thing before, it's like a bios bleep for an error, but quieter...

@djsmiley2k Some hard disks beep ...

Q: How to fix HDD malfunction which gives rapid beeping noise and it's not recognized by PC?

TroubledI have a 1TB Seagate External hard drive. Upon trying to plug it in to my TV today, it would not load and told me it was "empty". So I tried to plug it in to my computer, at this point it started beeping rapidly for about 10 seconds and although the computer recognizes the usb port being used, it...

it's not malfunctioning but maybe it's that

Bob
@HackToHell dying is normal and expected :P
but learning aim against bots works too

1:19 PM
the drive works, that's why I was confused
running the hp diagnositics now, I just hope it IS this laptop, and not another one
(there's two sat together)
This laptop however has only just come back from HP after being 'repaired' - no one can tell me what the fault was tho grr

1:35 PM
Any linux pro here?

what up?

No GUI in kali linux
I installed third-party gnome-shell-extension (numix)
After reboot just CLI

Q: Kali linux does not boot in gui

CaptainStonyI got kali linux installed on my pc for a while but now linux will not boot in gui mode , only in text mode ( terminal ). I get no errors on booting it goes directly to the login screen . Hope you can help me and yes I tried googling it.

1:44 PM
!!

@Rahul2001 That didn't make much sense. Use the !!/help command to learn more.

@DavidPostill can you Please tell how can I connect to wifi in CLI mode.

@Aneeshbhat No idea. I don't use Kali

@Aneeshbhat obviously you should remove the gnome-shell extension you added

@Aneeshbhat Try to do a bit of research before asking your questions here.

1:49 PM
@DavidPostill sorry

Q: Enable Wi-fi on Kali Linux

RhondaI just installed Kali Linux on Dell Inspiron 1545, and am unable to get wireless connection. I attempted the following root@kali:~# lspci -knn | grep Net -A2 0c:00.0 Network controller [0280]: Broadcom Corporation BCM4312 802.11b/g LP-PHY [14e4:4315] (rev 01) Subsystem: Dell Wireless 1397 W...

@DavidPostill no no, that's assuming you're not using networkmanager

@Aneeshbhat you really need to treat kali installs as disposable.

I'm 99% sure Kali would be using networkmanager

@allquixotic its Kali tho
its probably all sorts of messed up

1:50 PM
it's Debian-based.
nm-cli should work

@DavidPostill anyways thanyou somuch

Q: How to connect to wifi from command line

user902383I'm using latest version of Debian based linux Kali. Maybe it is XY problem, as main problem is after I log in to the system got blank screen and mouse pointer. Somebody on internet recommend me to change window manager. But I'm unable to do this as I can't connect to wifi. I found tutorial how...

many of the legitimate usecases for it would need you to not use network manager - for example using hostapd or various low level wifi haxxing tools

eh, true enough I guess
but somehow I doubt that's "ethical" hacking

Also, I missed an obvious joke
@allquixotic Most good ethical hackers write their own tools
and probably run gentoo or something

1:52 PM
or just OS X so the operating system stays the hell out of the way of the user

eh. That's coders ;)

that's an issue I've had with Linux, always, that increasingly bothers me as I have less patience for mucking around in low-level stuff
in 2007 = loved it
in 2010 = tolerated it
in 2016 = it drives me insane

I still enjoy it
Just that most of the day to day stuff I need to do is on windows

@allquixotic LOL

And really 90% of what you usually do just needs a web browser

Bob
1:54 PM
@allquixotic Funnily enough that applies for every OS for me -_-

@Bob really? like, there's frequent low-level crap that bothers you that you have to go fix?

Bob
Though at least when mucking around with low-level Windows stuff I vaguely know what I'm doing. Can't say the same for my (lack of) knowledge of other OSes.

@allquixotic for bob, its plausible
Mine's usually silly small annoyances @Bob knocks out a solution for in a weekend ;p

for me, I've had sparingly little low-level mucking to do on my primary desktop's Windows 10... not even all that much on Windows 8.1
the extent of my problems over the past... year-plus? was that one memory leak that has been quietly fixed either with a Windows update or a Nvidia driver update

Bob
@allquixotic Not so much these days, mostly because I can't be bothered.
Things like incompatible drivers... grrrrrr Ralink

1:56 PM
I'm pretty much to the point where my Windows box's uptime is dictated by Windows Update, never have to reboot for anything else

Bob
My bootloader is still kinda messed up

and all my hardware is current and has good drivers

@Bob you also buy wierd tablets.

Bob
And, uh. Oh, SSD caching. IRST/ISRT is annoyingly fiddly at times.

1:57 PM
I even managed to get past my cheap-ass Z170M motherboard (a very low-end model) having one single USB 3.0 root controller / getting overloaded by getting two very high quality USB hubs

@allquixotic the only thing that's stopping me from trying to build my own home router is financial imprudence ;p

for SSD caching, Adaptec maxCache 3.0 works wonders :P

or lackthereof

Bob
Oh, and CUE and Mumble have been clashing for about a year now... which means occasionally all programs' volumes get halved until it hits 0.

lol
You complained about it last time

Bob
1:57 PM
My current "fix" for that is a batch script that purges per-program volume info from the registry and then restarts audio services.

thinks he's 2-3 weeks away from not having to take care of his parents all the time ._.

Bob
@allquixotic Oh yea. What's a good USB 3.0 hub?
You were complaining about the Anker ones a while back.
And I'm trying to find one that (hopefully) doesn't use a VIA controller :\

@Bob well, the ones I have may still use VIA chipsets, but they're not using the specific ones that Anker used that were incredibly unreliable and got totally bricked by firmware updates

Bob
@JourneymanGeek uhhh, yea, I'm not even including those in "weird stuff" :\
@allquixotic Thought the VL812 (and its update) was the only one VIA made. Or at least the most popular by far.
@allquixotic Got a model I can look at anyway?
