8:01 AM
why is the review queue empty?

o_O
because soemone got busy?

I can haz edits?

i have internet at home now
but no PC desk
@Dog you need to rename yourself "spoon"

8:19 AM
Not sure I understand.
Who uses LastPass?

I do

Do you use this feature?

nope, never seen that before
I don't use the authenicator

What 6 numbers are they talking about?

so that might be why
I use google auth

8:20 AM
Just downloaded Auth on Android.
It has PIN code access that the other does not.

I'm wondering if it copies the code from the auth app, into the browser asking for the code?

*Authy

that's pretty funky if it does

Bob
floof beep beep

Don't know... Authy has multi-device feature. I think if you lose access to 1 device, you still got PC or tablet...

8:23 AM
@Bob are you reversing?

bleep bleep bleep bleep

He's a fox sheep

@djsmiley2k flagged for swearing! ;)

lol
he's a few sheep short of a flock

8:26 AM
Is getting a laptop from Amazon with specifications of 16GB Ram, NVIDIA 4GB graphics card, 2TB HDD, With an I7 Processor, for $800 genuine? It says its of Dell, But in showrooms specifications like these cost around $1800-$2000
I could add a link if it sounds unbelievable. I thought Amazon is a genuine website.

@AnimeshAshish could be an older moder/clearance. But without more information, who knows. Amazon does do some reselling and not all of those are reputable.
But if they mail you a brick, you can complain.

in the UK and maybe the EU you are protected under distance selling regulations

If I add a link, could you guide me if there are any chances of me getting cheated?

we are not lawyers

There's always a chance of being cheated
(shrug if you're going to ask, ask. Link plz.)

8:29 AM
In addition to what @Burgi said there are also probably credit card protections too

> Sold by Cardinal Pro Electronics and Fulfilled by Amazon.

Actually I'd be using ShopUSA to make the payments. It will provude me a warehouse address to which Amazon will deliver.

the fact that both have the same image seems a bit shifty

Laptops with that specification cost around $1800 here in India (Converting the rupess into dollars) . I thought in USA maybe it's cheap. Is it?
I'm sorry, is anybody listening ?

8:35 AM
lol
I can't find a core i7 model of that size on dell's web page

'Dell 5000 series
wtf is this
'Warranty, Labor:1 year manufacturer warrantyAmazon.com Return Policy:You may return any new computer purchased from Amazon.com that is "dead on arrival," arrives in damaged condition, or is still in unopened boxes, for a full refund within 30 days of purchas'

30 days? will you even get it fast enough to test it?

Retail price off dell is about 1000 usd

<3 UK law

Those reviews all look fake tho
so it's a toss up tbh

yup
@AnimeshAshish indian prices are overpriced but I'd much rather look at direct amazon or official stores

Should I buy it from Amazon?

It would be safer yes

According to you, Buying the laptops whose link I provuded isn't a good idea?

8:40 AM
lol I'd rather not take that risk
(also, I have a fundamental dislike of large laptops ;p)
as an only machine, maybe but they arn't practical to carry around

I'd be in a college in a few months, So I was searching around the internet for a good laptop at lower price until I found this.
And, Lucky for me I came across some experts here to get some help :)

Bob
@AnimeshAshish depending on what you need I'd generally recommend lower power laptops for university
smaller/lighter, longer battery life...

I'd be studying Computer Science and Engineering. Also, I love gaming so :3

Tools for work and tools for playtime are rarely the same

Bob
eh... laptop gaming is poor unless you're in the $2000 range. I wouldn't recommend it.

8:47 AM
wtf
why has someone disabled the service that detects network connections o_O

Aren't the products that I surf directly from the webpage and the ones that are available on e-commerce websites have vast difference in their prices?

Bob
@AnimeshAshish you're in the rare exception that might actually need more power :P
@AnimeshAshish depends... sales happen independently
I'll say those specs for under $1k is not unheard of

@AnimeshAshish heh. From experience, I really recommend light and cheap stuff for school ;p

Bob
But when you cram specs for cheap, build quality suffers
you end up with a bulky somewhat fragile machine that works fine sitting at a desk but not so well when carried around in a bag all day
@AnimeshAshish ozbargain.com.au/node/300754 similar specs, similar category :P
actually, that's cheaper (cause AUD) but it's cheapass Lenovo line so not great build

But I need 2TB laptop. Its 256SSD

8:54 AM
lol

Bob
do you actually need 2TB? why?

@AnimeshAshish do you?

For storing moviesand stuff

lol. USB Hard drives ;)

movies, songs, videos

Bob
8:55 AM
the SSD will perform far better than a HDD, will last longer, and use less power
use a external/portable hard drive for movies

I don't actually know the difference between SSD and HDD, let me google it :P

lol
SSD is flash based
its pricier but generally better at... everything

Its probably a more logical option than a 17 incher
I'd actually go with a single 256gb hdd
its big enough most things you normally need it all the time for

Now I am stuck with choosing the brand. Dell/HP/Acer/VAIO/Asus
Trust me, I'm honestly stuck in buying the laptop. And your help is what I shall owe for the rest of my life :(
I din't think Mac is good for gaming and stuff so I didn't gave it in the option..

9:04 AM
lol
With dell or HP, their consumer stuff is not that good
their business line is sometimes better
VAIO is currently in a period of transition
Lenovo thinkpads are ok
but there's a lot of tangible stuff you miss buying a laptop sight unseen

lenovo all the way

how do I redirect the output of a command to the batch file?

er...?

uhh

9:11 AM
@Rahul2001 > ?

Okay, wait. I mistyped. Goddamn one handed-typing

you need to explain what happened in this accident btw

okay

were you on a tuk tuk?

@bertieb This one maybe?

Q: Stack Exchange Editor Toolkit

AstroCB This userscript is a revival of sorts for the old SE Editor Toolkit, which was abandoned some time ago. It only really provides the autocorrect aspect for the foreseeable future, which I find to be quite useful. It works by injecting a button in the edit window (it works inline for users wi...

Single for direct, double for append? Or am I confusing it with Linux?
@Burgi auto

@DavidPostill Good thought. It might well have been that- I looked and didn't think so initially, but on closer inspection now the older revisions look somewhat familiar...

This guy thought he would have some fun by harassing me on the damn road.
Whole road is empty, but he comes behind me and starts honking badly.
I have no idea what's going on, I'm already at the edge of the road (on my bicycle).
And there are wicked bushes next to the road.
The, uh, idiot is behind me, trying to run into me, speeding. I have no more space to move to the edge of the road, my arm is already being hit by the bushes.
Suddenly I see a big bush that kinda comes on the road, and I have to serve to the left to avoid running right into the bush

9:16 AM
Seems to have i → I though which was the main one :P
@Rahul2001 Ouch :-/

@Burgi One broken bone, one sprain, some nasty gashes and several cuts on my right arm from the hedge.

@bertieb when I was a newbie, people complained I did that. .. a lot

Can anybody give me an adress for a US vpn connection?

I must confess noticed one in the GfW Q you posted the other day :P
Still, it was a well-phrased coherent question, not a stream of consciousness

I am trying to open hp's official website with .com domain and it open .in

9:21 AM
Which is what sent me down the rabbit hole of trying to find the "make the pain stop" userscript

@AnimeshAshish use the little dropdown thing at the top of the site

I guess you guys have different 'make the pain stop' buttons ;)

Where is the dropdown?

@Burgi no, that's not what I'm trying to do

Bob
@JourneymanGeek OVH Sg just opened :P
@Burgi eww. lenovo.

9:38 AM
@Rahul2001 does your batch file "listen" for passed parameters?
@Rahul2001 i'm sorry to hear that dude. did you manage to get the guys license plate?

@Burgi yeah, I needed the |
@Burgi no, unfortunately.

@Bob shrug i like thinkpads

Bob
@Burgi have you had one from the last 5 years?
The E-series are basically consumer-class. in build quality anyway
some T-series are apparently still decent
but also maybe not depending on which particular model

Anyone else experienced outlook asking for the password simply because the response to the server is slow?

@Bob no

Bob
9:41 AM
@Burgi when was your last?

@Rahul2001 make, model and colour of the car?

Bob
you probably caught the tail end of proper IBM thinkpads

@djsmiley2k There was an answer to a similar-ish Q in the review queue the other day which said it asked for a password because of a backdoor Chinese MITM attack (lenovo laptop)

@Bob possibly

@Burgi yes, but cops can't do much

9:42 AM
@Rahul2001 hindistan ambassador in black and yellow? ;)
@Bob i remember reading reviews about the carbon x1 and thinking "man i wish i could buy one"

lol, no

@djsmiley2k NVM, was OWA on a Chromebook, not Outlook

my mistake, it was in the footer

I have a weird case:
we can't connect to the internet nor the router (but the lan is fine.) for about 5 minutes each day, then it goes back to normal, anyone has an idea to what could be causing that?
we already replaced the router and did a reset on it.

@satibel speak to your ISP?

9:47 AM
Wireless?

@Bur
@Burgi Thanks

ISP says nothing is wrong on their side.

@satibel At the same time every day?

ISTR a story (jargon file-related? bash.org?) of someone's wireless cutting out at the same time each day because of a nearby boat at naval base doing radar test or such

@DavidPostill more or less 1hour.

9:51 AM
@satibel DHCP renewal going wrong? Does your public IP address change?

@DavidPostill it's a fixed IP, and my pc is configured as static IP with google DNS (and still has the problems)
could a pc connected to both wifi and cable be able to cause a loop?

@satibel No idea. I never do that.

Okay, bear with me here

Right now the solution is : xkcd.com/1822.

@satibel so many things to test
different router
different devices on network
even though you're on a 'static' ip how is it assigned to the router? it can still be via dhcp

9:56 AM
rb.exe gives me the output postText=hi. I need to set postText as a variable. rb.exe | set /p isn't working. What do I do?

@satibel run something like pingdom to your static address to check the stability

If so, and the lease is 24 hours.... how long does the renewal take? is it ~5 minutes?
Is there any powerline devices? Is there microwaves only affecting the wifi? Is there another device on a shared socket causing some weird kind of power fluxuation
Is your ISP lying?

exactly hence pingdom

oh, caught my culprit, time since up for the box is 00h27m34s

@DavidPostill Does the Uncle have a solution? ;p

10:00 AM
@Burgi that sounds like robbery

errr

@DavidPostill hm

yeah that's terribad price

we have 3 (or maybe 4) mobile providers and all of them provide unlimited data (at slightly different prices, but it all evens out at ~20€/mo for "unlimited everything" plans)

A: Windows batch assign output of a program to a variable

Carlos GutiérrezOne way is: application arg0 arg1 > temp.txt set /p VAR=<temp.txt Another is: for /f %%i in ('application arg0 arg1') do set VAR=%%i Note that the first % in %%i is used to escape the % after it and is needed when using the above code in a batch file rather than on the command line. Imagine...

10:02 AM
not quite as cheap here, but still cheap enough you can pick something up to give you data

Q: How to set commands output as a variable in a batch file

DennisIs it possible to set a statement's output of a batch file to a variable, for example: findstr testing > %VARIABLE% echo %VARIABLE%

@DavidPostill looks like my short and concise problem example failed :( Here's an elaboration:
The following is a batch file:
@echo off
:main
(type index.html) | nc -w 1 -l -p 80 | findstr "postText"
goto :main
This usually gives me an output like postText=hi, every time that the command is run
I need to set a variable with the value as whatever the first command gives me (in this case, hi)

@tereško good free wifi was pretty widely available so it didn't really bother me

How do I go about doing this?

lol
"free wifi"
you pay for it in the risk, that comes with sending your data in open

10:11 AM
@Rahul2001 So if you echo postText=hi you want to get the hi into a variable?

@DavidPostill exactly

@Rahul2001 Give me some time. The = makes it tricky and I can't remember the workaround of the top of my head.

@DavidPostill Sure, thanks a ton :)

@Rahul2001 has the arm made your GF pour sympathy on you?

@Burgi She was concerned and worried, yes, but I'm not sure if she "poured sympathy"... She's currently on a birding trip to a national park

10:16 AM
@tereško i wasn't doing any banking
@Rahul2001 you mean she hasn't been round to cook you food and make you drinks?

@Burgi She's currently on a birding trip to a national park

@tereško and badly protected hotspots which check if the username and passwords matches [A-Za-z0-9@.]* before giving them to a bash script. x)

lul lul lul
clients getting pentested
they got no security around password resets via the phone
Pretty sure yesterday they failed for that.

@DavidPostill your first nuke if you want?

user226528
Seems like it deserves a nuke.

@djsmiley2k Hmm. It's not really spam. Off-topic though.

yah

user226528
@DavidPostill The offer of generous reward makes me think it is for a malicious purpose.

10:48 AM
i flagged as off topic, not in scope

@Rahul2001 Try this:

@FleetCommand oh yes, it's trying to submit course work

@echo off
setlocal
for /f "delims== tokens=1,2" %%a in ('rb.exe') do (
  set _var=%%b
  echo %_var%
  )
endlocal

user226528
Huh?

user226528
Yeah. I did too.

10:52 AM
lol
Beating turnitin is easy
Just write the damned assignment yourself

@DavidPostill Thanks! I gtg now, will try later in the evening.

@JourneymanGeek thats what i said

I mean literally
Paraphrasing goes a long way, and its going to be odd copy pasting stuff and getting it to flow

"It's easy, just change the content of the word document to something that is not plagiarized."
might I?

lol. she also posted on bleepingcomputer.
> PS: email me at amelia.trisco@gmail.com - when you think you may have a solution/are a guest and cannot reply to this thread

10:58 AM
brilliant... a customers website is blacklisted

@Burgi by what?

Ah!
Reading the article she posted...
it ends with
> Building a startup to eliminate Turnitin's issues

Should you be interested in my new project TINT (Tint Is Not Turnitin, provisional name), please contact me on https://angel.co/tint-is-not-turnitin only.

@JourneymanGeek that url is 404

@JourneymanGeek 404 not found

that link goes no where...
:D

11:00 AM

@satibel mcafee site advisor

OH

@Burgi lololol

@Burgi are they offering downloads or spamming?

Q: Windows 10 Transperent Icons White Background

Jonathan BeaudoinI've noticed that icons that are supposed to have a transperent background have a white background instead. I've tried rebuilding the thumbnail/icon cache, tried sfc /scannow, tried in-place upgrade install, nothing has helped. Please help!!!

How am I still the only guy who upvoted that? :(

@satibel downloads

@OliverSalzburg because themes

@Burgi might be why then.

only pdfs

@djsmiley2k Has nothing to do with themes
Or are you implying that everyone else is using them? :D

11:08 AM
@OliverSalzburg I'd test using different formats for the desktop image for example
and can you turn aero off in 10?

aero isn't in W10
its metro

@djsmiley2k Desktop image?

Is it just a flat colour?
i can't tell from the very small screenshot
Tho I've seen this before in XP, 7,...

This is my task bar

@Burgi full name: metrosexual fruitcake.

11:10 AM
You can see the issue with Edge and the Settings
Flat white background instead of transparent

ok so it's just two icons
which are both part of windows...

Yeah, just the Windows applications

so I think it's the windows icon theme

I read a suggestion somewhere that it is due to having upgraded to Windows 10
And, guess what, a reinstall "fixes" it
Upgraded as opposed to a fresh install

Q: Issue in Windows 10 with lack of icon transparency for System icons

u01jmg3 Just started using Windows 10 and I'm seeing that system icons are not transparent and instead I'm seeing the white and grey placeholder background (chequerboard) you usually see to indicate a background is transparent. Other icons such as the Chrome icon are unaffected by this issue. Does an...

:o
As noted in the comments it appears Windows may have a hidden cache for HiDPI modes that does not get cleared implicitly with a cache clear. Changing your DPI settings to 100% and then back again should fix this.
You messing with DPI?
Also, png's stopped opening in windows picture viewer for me
but I've not noticed the icon issue

11:13 AM
@djsmiley2k Let me check that
@djsmiley2k Nope
Interesting. When I scale up, I can see that the Settings actually gets a checkerboard background as well. And Edge will have a black background

heh
i've just noticed I got a different bug tho

Scaling back down doesn't reset it though

you've fried sfc?
tried*

southern fried chicken?

You're the man!
I uninstalled SageThumbs, just to be sure :P
Then I did that DPI switch you suggested
But now it's actually back to the broken icons again :D

11:23 AM
BOOM
D:
wait, so is it fixed or not?
I WANT ALL THE REPS

It didn't
It seems to only temporarily show the working icons from the higher DPI until it reverts to the broken cached ones

set to higher dpi
clear and regen cache
set dpi lower again
spammer.

Not any more

=D
I mean seriously, how retarded...

@djsmiley2k How would you suggest clearing it?

Bob
11:31 AM
@JourneymanGeek See: how I write -_-
Well, it depends.
If it's a generic research/report thing... yea, a couple cited quotes, paraphrase/summarise the rest. That's exactly what you're meant to do!
If it's writing about something you did/discovered, then ... more original work should be done.

So annoying. I reboot, system comes up with correct icons. At some point there is a "wave" going through the taskbar, replacing all icons. And that replaces the correct icons with those with broken background
Obviously, I need a couple 4K displays and just run higher DPI

@OliverSalzburg throw more dots

@OliverSalzburg yes

Sweet, now I have more icon issues...
Yeah, new hardware is obviously the way to go here

11:52 AM
is it a driver issue?

@Burgi I doubt it
But I assume that I won't have this issue on a fresh installation on fresh hardware ;P

ugh that excel issue is back

Hmm, I think I bought my last computer 5 years ago. I have no clue what to buy anymore ...again!

12:08 PM
@Burgi You already lost me after the title :P
If a product needs to be compared to an Apple product, it's likely not for me
Also, a laptop is unlikely to be a good fit
I have yet to see a laptop that doesn't become a noise issue under continuous load

i just happened upon the review in my list of unread articles as you said you needed a new pc

Or one that would power 3 displays at 3K+ resolution
@Burgi Ah, gotcha

i knew not of your requirements ;)

@Burgi I'd already be happy to know which is the latest and correct DDRn version to get ;D
And what is the Intel architecture to get these days

as the CTO can you recommend that you need a cray just for yourself?

12:15 PM
Mainboard manufacturers that can be trusted to produce quality
@Burgi I buy whatever I want :P ...as long as it doesn't bankrupt us

@OliverSalzburg Skylake for now

@JourneymanGeek For now? Something new around the corner?
Well, isn't there always? :P

@OliverSalzburg have you ever noticed any of your minions posting SE questions?

@OliverSalzburg Yup

12:23 PM
@Burgi I actively encourage it
@JourneymanGeek It'll probably take me months until I have a setup prepared :P

12:41 PM
@OliverSalzburg i dunno, i've heard of doing it before tho

@djsmiley2k Okay. I deleted all iconcache files from my HDD, didn't have the desired effect
But, at least I have the peace of mind that I probably fucked it up myself by installing SageThumbs
