youtu.be/L3iJjrQmEho people having too much fun throwing fake lightning at a drone. Also, they do it twice.

Bob
@JourneymanGeek Kimchi is ... weird. It's in that position of being too heavy to really want to use it, being concerned about the whole needing-root-password thing, but also being decent enough at what it does.

@Bob you don't need a root password
works fine with my regular, admin-capable account

Bob
@JourneymanGeek 'admin-capable'
same-same

@Bob you need that sort of power for running VMs
even virt manager does

Bob
@JourneymanGeek Ya. But virt-manager is better suited for SSH tunneling.
I suppose that's doable with Kimchi, but locking it down is non-obvious.

12:22 AM
Assuming you have a linux box handy ;)

Bob
@JourneymanGeek Ehhh. *looks at kitty*

@Bob I think the idea there is "SSL is good enough, meh"
@Bob kitty does virtual machine manager? ;p
(which I add, one only really need for initial setup)
I lost my SSH keys for a few months and couldn't get into my main server. VM was humming along until the 16.10 update ;p

Bob
@JourneymanGeek SSL TLS would be good enough if they did client certificates.

@Bob considering its backed by ngnix, its probably doable.

Bob
Point being, the confidentiality and integrity TLS provides isn't enough. Authentication is required too.
@JourneymanGeek Technically possible, and an incredible pain in the arse. SSH is easier :P

12:26 AM
@Bob I primarily want this so I can spin up VMs on my home server from my desktop ;p

Dog
12:51 AM
Space Kimchi!

spice kimchi! IN SPAAAAACEEEEEE
@Dog fairly simple web/html5 front end for KVM/libvirt with a few other shiny things

If it was a Windows server with Hyper-V, I would suggest a VPN plus WinRM

Also, deleted my LJ account.
Its the social networking service I think I've had the longest :(
@BenN it isn't ;p

Oh man, speaking of LiveJournal, this story is incredible
Ultra long but uber interesting
h/t Slate Star Codex

1:07 AM
@BenN I disagree with their most recent TOS changes at multiple levels

What did they do?
(Oh, and one of my favorite things about the Msscribe story is how quickly all those shenanigans would have been shut down on an SE site)

@BenN new TOS
wrong link ;p
also the new TOS is "not legally binding" but apparently the russian one is
and refers to a russian law without saying what it is

Ow

and I have a shitload of LGBT friends online, a good chunk of whom used to use LJ so...
(I'm totally not going to judge people who still use it. I realise how hard it is to move things. There's literally nothing there I care about any more, and this is mostly throwing out sentimental, clearly broken things)

Bob
@JourneymanGeek Oh that is olllllllllllllld.
Found some interesting stuff there once upon a time.

1:18 AM
lol
I think I first got a LJ account over a decade ago ;p
Its like the second or third place I had I considered 'home' on the internet ;)
@BenN heh, you've been following that post on meta on talking about suspensions publically right?
I don't think any other place would do that

I've been skimming for new answers every so often, yeah

lol
(yay for 10Kness there. I can read all the deleted drama)

I should get to work on 10K-itude there, so much hilarious history is deleted
10K on SO (for MSO) would also be exciting, but ouch

Yup
lol
funny thing is the reason I got 10k for... I could read cause of rules changes

I think my highest-rep-inducing MSE post is an answer to the announcement tag one
Still have >5K to go though :(

1:23 AM
lol
this is one of my reversal badges ;)

Actually, drama of all kinds has been great for my MSE rep
:D

lol
I have 4 reversal badges there ;)

Bob
@JourneymanGeek Linky? :P

Q: Why don't we keep public records of suspensions?

Jon EricsonWhenever the topic of a suspended user crops up, there's often confusion about what information moderators ought to share and what they should keep private. Sometimes moderators are just as unsure as other users. This can cause all sorts of unnecessary problems. The immediate effect of a suspen...

@BenN I don't get people who complain about how a site is run and how things are unfair....
I wouldn't stick around where I wasn't wanted.

Bob
1:34 AM
@JourneymanGeek If a site is 95% good, it's often less effort to try to make it (subjectively) better rather than run off away :P

@Bob Oh, you can't see those
.... neither can @BenN actually
@Bob I think the one time that happened, I was banned from chat on a headphone forum
I don't remember what it was, and apparently neither did the mods who kicked me
I don't even care, or remember what site it was ;p

Bob
@JourneymanGeek I meant linky to the meta post, which @BenN provided ^
Is it even possible to have private meta posts?

@Bob for the 95% better
Nope
You can reply to the mod message tho
or use contact us link
I mean seriously - look at Yvette...

Or get hauled into a private chatroom

Bob
@JourneymanGeek I thought the 'complain about ...' thing was referring to meta

1:41 AM
@Bob deleted meta post ;p

Bob
Ah.
I knew it! The truth has finally been revealed! Ubuntu was Windows all along! — Matti Virkkunen 2 hours ago

@BenN I've never done that :(
nor have I needed to :(
actually I'd have to look up how to do that if I needed to

Q: How can a line cord easily stay in a jack?

InterLinkedI have quite a few telephones. One I bought supposedly broken but I fished the jack out of the phone and found part of the connector was missing. A line cord could still snap in. Today, I was swapping cords from my PBX and the part of the plug that keeps the cord in broke off. The cord is fine o...

._.
Not a PC. And I'm sure back when that was new, the XT was a newfangled thing.

2:09 AM
@Bob dunno if you saw from earlier (while you were asleep) but I got an IBM employee from their "main" US office to answer a question for me on SO :P (or at least one of their really important ones, the main design/development office for their System Z offerings, i.e., the mainframes that run the world's financial systems and other such large stuff)
IBM has kinda done a neat thing with their first-party Java application server (which I'm required to use in some fashion since it's the "standard"), they released a freeware version of WebSphere called Liberty that can be run in dev or production and is faster to start up and easier to configure than the traditional WAS

@allquixotic fasterm easier, free...
what's the catch? ;p

@JourneymanGeek on the Honor System, they limit you to 2 GB heap size. basically as much heap as you could fit in a 32-bit process without LAA
In my head I've been calling it the "Sins of a Solar Empire License"
(because they ship 64-bit binaries but you're limited to Sins-style memory)

0_0
ah, so you shouldn't run a bigger heap, but they won't stop you?

right :P
fortunately, anything that will run on WAS Liberty on Windows or Linux also runs on traditional WAS on the mainframe (System/Z) with minimal/no modifications, so I can do my coding and development on Liberty, and when it's time to go into production, they'll take my .ear file and put it on the mainframe
and when they do that, it'll suddenly get access to loads of resources and run on a 5.5 GHz processor with 4-way hyperthreading per CPU

ah. Clever
especially since chaces are there's other things the mainframe does better
like running dozens of these apps ;p

Bob
2:28 AM
@allquixotic Nice
@allquixotic I had something similar happen with Progress :P
The answer was ... less satisfying ... though
They literally created that account to reply to that one question o.O

._.
So, I have one of these....
I'm trying to grok if the USB C female port there charges other devices since plugging in my charger does nothing
shutup clippy
ah!
Solved. Yeah, it basically does C to type A 3.0 female + a charge only C port
(and no, I didn't buy it at retail. Got it for less than half price)

2:56 AM
@Bob O_O

Bob
@allquixotic Seems fairly common for tech companies to keep an eye on SO these days :P
Whether officially or not.

3:10 AM
@Bob yeah, but to have one create an account for you, indicates just how rarely people use that tech
at least the IBM folks have >1000 rep

Bob
@allquixotic lol. I'm more surprised that they actually noticed!

@allquixotic on the other hand, it means someone there is keeping an eye out.

3:32 AM
lol

Gosh. Went through almost seven hours of photography today doing a baseball doubleheader. The first game dragged on in extra innings.
I'm finally on my way home.
Yet I have another assignment tomorrow, covering softball and baseball.
Went through two cans of Starbucks Doubleshot on the job.
I'll be sure to get some rest. Shor's bones, what a long day...

@Bob some of the answers you got to your Progress question are very odd
the "Emad" answer is.... idek

Bob
3:47 AM
@allquixotic oh I actually forgot about mollyfud... that was an existing account probably watching the progress tags
@allquixotic You know... I bet they tried google to answer our support question and stumbled on my later-added SO question :P

@Bob how good is the Progress ecosystem as a dev?

Bob
@allquixotic I'm not a Progress dev so I can't really answer that :\
I only really interact with the edges of it.
But their KB does have some targeted/useful stuff.

so kinda like System/Z and me

Bob
Their documentation seems alright. Support is reasonably responsive, if a bit clueless at times.
Basically, big enterprisey software company.

by "edges" do you mean, like, web services? DBs?

Bob
3:52 AM

@Dog I appreciate your insightful comment but I'm worried your A key is going to get worn out. Self inflicted disemvowelment is a horrible way to go.

Dog
5:43 AM
AAAAAAABH_k rvhgh
Touchscreen keyboards don't get worn out

in that case....
catlike typing detected

Dog
I also bought this to deal with worn out smartphone screens
@JourneymanGeek cats don't autocorrect on touchscreens

Bob
@JourneymanGeek I just realised my naming schemes don't match :(
totally should've stayed within one mythology

Bob
Hm. Wait. Does it match?
Gaia, Yggdrasil...

5:57 AM
lol

Bob
Still, if I ever migrate VMs between them, it'll be weird.
Phoebe visits Yggdrasil? :P

Goddess... big tree

Bob
@JourneymanGeek s/goddess/earth/?

Though Gaia's a anthropomorphic personification.

Bob
@JourneymanGeek If I ever add a third host, it'll be weirder. I don't know Egyption mythology that well :(
And the other ones, especially the eastern ones, even less.
Takama-ga-hara? Bit long...
Aaru (Egyptian)? but that's more like Olympus/Asgard than Gaia/Yggdrasil :\

6:02 AM
lol
Hathor!

Bob
Nu?
Might be better off just using, idk, Skyrim mythology or something :P
@JourneymanGeek The only place I know that from is SG1 :P

NUUUUUUUUUUUUU
Chinese names would be funky
SunWuKong? ;p

Bob
@JourneymanGeek Hundun?

@Bob tempting fate much?

Bob
@JourneymanGeek LOL
Yea uh... I chose Gaia over Chaos for a reason

6:10 AM
I quite literally pick names at random

ow.
@Rahul2001 I can smell the burn from here.

a goddess I've actually never seen a temple for ever.

Bob
@JourneymanGeek Well, I kinda went for primordial/'earth'/first for the host :P

6:12 AM
Also, amusingly, I wouldn't name a system after a hindu deity

Bob
Of the original Greek-named VMs some are kinda fitting but most just sound nice.

that's mostly why I use those

Bob
@JourneymanGeek Any particular reason? :P

@Bob seems like sacriledge.
I stick to mostly dead religions ;p

Bob
Going purely by how they sound... Greek, Norse, Egyptian would all work for me. Japanese/Shinto maybe but most of those names are a bit long.
@JourneymanGeek o.O

6:15 AM
@Bob I do vaguely have a religion ;)

Bob
Ah.
I'm largely agnostic... I just don't care :P

Its just not something that comes up in conversation here for obvious reasons ;p

Bob
The mythology is interesting, the names sound nice, good 'nuff for me

yup ;p
Course, I have that whole wierd set of co-incidences involving Athena, which is why its my main hostname...

Bob
@JourneymanGeek ?

6:18 AM
@Bob essentially I kept seeing references to athena for roughly... 2-3 years. Everywhere.

The front page is filled with memes in reference to that guy being dragged off of a plane. I can't remember the last time the entire reddit user base was so... United

Bob
@JourneymanGeek o.O

Hello, hello I'm a jello.

user226528
Well, Hello.

user226528
6:24 AM
What the hell? You guys were practicing being a poet?

I intend to name my systems after theological demons.

user226528
Ha ha ha!

ow
@FleetCommand apparently its ometaphoea from something @allquixotic linked earlier ;p

user226528
6:30 AM
Apple once moved to Intel. It could happen again.

user226528
I am not saying it will though.

@FleetCommand more the sheer amount of bridge burning going on

user226528
@JourneymanGeek I received the news of Apple moving to Intel platform right after an ad that said if Wintel was a mouse, PowerPC would be a lion.

@FleetCommand I don't recall IBM accusing apple of crippling their powerpc boxen

morning all
my son decided not to sleep between 11pm and 4am :(

6:45 AM
my face has now collapsed

Bob
@bwDraco speaking of tempting fate...

user226528
@JourneymanGeek Boxen?

...
ox oxen, box boxen, fox foxen.
English is an entirely logical language.

user226528
Does IBM exist today? Or did it go bankrupt?

IBM still makes power processors
they sold off their consumer and x86 server lines to lenovo, and are mostly a consulting firm

user226528
6:55 AM
Well, as long as the Chinese haven't acquired it...

and service desk
they got huge services as a service... thing

user226528
Services as a service? They don't help people install Windows 10 now, do they?

:D
they do first line helpdesk stuff for some of our clients.

@djsmiley2k heh. Here most of the workforce for that seems to be outsourced.

user226528
Not to the Chinese I hope...

6:58 AM
naw
the indians.
arguably not much better
actually, indian tech guys are good when they're good
But the companies that do these things are somewhat...

user226528
We once had an Indian contractor visit our company.

user226528
The funnest part was during diner when we were handing our plates of Kabob. He seemed scared.

user226528
Other than that I didn't notice anything India-related to them. He seemed just like a contractor.

I've just had pretty bad experiences dealing with them

user226528
Oh, I see.

7:06 AM
Not necessarily ethnic indian folks. One company kept trying to push me to a job I know was a seriously lowball salary... after doing a bait and switch. Most of them feel like "we need to fill these roles for this money" rather than "we need to get the right people for these jobs"

@JourneymanGeek tbh that's just business, sadly
Like here where I work, the wage isn't great at all

@djsmiley2k yeah, but as someone looking for a job...

they got some really good staff, but have trouble picking up anyone else of any kind of skill
because the wage is so bad concidering the other offers out there
but it's a really nice place to work, swings and aroundabout

@djsmiley2k yeah, its a business model, but one that's fundamentally exploitative ;p
and I've had pretty terrible experiences with them

Is all business not?
at the end of the day
you need money, we'll exploit that fact by making you do things.
Obviously, it goes to different lengths.
:D

7:11 AM
The bait and switch for an apparently non existant job though...

user226528
Microsoft used to be different. Stress on "used to be".

user226528
Job-wise I mean.

I didn't get a call back from that other place that asked me how many years of experience I have with various versions of windows.
but but. I've run them all, from at least release to when the next version came out ++
other than vista

user226528
Same here.

Oh oh
and the place that called me from india on whatsapp

user226528
7:14 AM
Strange. netvibes.com isn't responding. No ping either.

Bob
@JourneymanGeek "years experience" => all of them? :P
all the years!

That's interesting
I edited a CWed post on main meta, and it didn't get bumped

7:36 AM
ISTR a userscript for auto-fixing grammar and spelling (i → I, idk → I don't know) on SE sites but I cannot for the life of me find it, does anyone know the one I mean?

Bob
@bertieb SUAC

Oh jings something reset the notification sound volume so I fair jumped there
@Bob Thanks, think that's the one!

Bob
god it took so long to find
and google was utterly useless
tracked it down from my github history :P
hasn't been updated since 2012 though

morning

Bob
and you might be better off just manually fixing things

7:41 AM
Actually, vimperator for Fx might have helped

Bob
@bertieb yea no a script isn't gonna fix that trainwreck

If it's indeed vimperator I'm thinking of
I think it's salvageable! (well, goes without saying as I tried but I'll say it anyway :P)
@Burgi 'gmorn
We can't give up on every stream-of-consciousness Q

@ThatBrazilianGuy i was asking for help on that question

Bob
@bertieb It probably is, but manual effort required :P

I may be fighting a losing battle here; but it seemed lazy to not at least try and clean it up when it came up in the review queue- at least then it might be an "unclear what you're asking" close rather than VLQ

Bob
7:44 AM
There's also some irony of me being on the other side of this argument for once.

Heh

@Dog what about virgin mobile?

Q: How fast would a sword need to be to avoid getting blood on it?

FriendlysociopathIf a sword were to be swung horizontally, through the torso of a human being, how fast would it need to be to not have blood on it after the swing? Your name and this question are mildly concerning. — Joe Kissling 2 days ago

I could swear I saw SUAC on the userscripts stackapps SE

Bob
@bertieb It probably was at some point. That github repo is the canonical link though.

7:54 AM
@Bob Fair enough; I have a nagging feeling that there was another (really, hands? 'a nother' ? wtf) one that was slightly more recent/broader. I recall seeing ubuntu → Ubuntu replacement as an example maybe?
Hey ho, good enough for now!
