I'm trying to set the font size of a placeholder on a PowerPoint slide master, but whenever I change the font size, PowerPoint changes it back. What mechanism is at play here?
Anything I find online that explains this process, explains it exactly like I have been doing it. After all, you wouldn't expect this to be a challenge
Hmm, I can't reproduce that behavior on PowerPoint 2016 with the blank template
Well, now I deleted the placeholder and placed a new one and this one works
But I've already been through an iteration of this
Initially, the placeholder had the wrong color. I gave up and deleted it, then that one stopped responding to changes soon after
I was wondering whether it inherits style information from somewhere I'm not aware of
Bob
Bob
@TOWMN I was asleep -_-
@TOWMN I think the online form only accepts the licence... can't remember
Optus has lots of big data plans (50GB) with resellers. incidentally they're also often congested :P
but sometimes alright
01:23
Mornin'
Like, really early morning, because girlfriend messages me at 5 in the morning, and I wake up and just spend two hours or so talking to her. It was fun though.
And there was a thunderstorm all night so I couldn't sleep.
Hm, I should probably get some rest.
01:36
oooh! robot wars is back
brb tea and death dealing robots
01:49
@Bob I realised
@Bob not here
@allquixotic Awww. He/she's cute but my hair is in better condition than that, because I still have some left over conditioner I stole from Hilton.
@Bob: which resellers by the way? The couple I checked are just as expensive as mainline Optus
@TOWMN even considering you've gone rogue?
i suppose stolen hilton stuff helps
@Burgi yup, some fancy luxury stuff
And I'm not rogue, I'm just... Well I dunno. awol?
which hilton was it?
@TOWMN stray perhaps?
feral? ;)
Bob
Bob
02:24
@TOWMN I meant in cbds and trains
@TOWMN ...I've literally never gotten more than 30 up
:(
S7?
@TOWMN ovo, jeenee
but I don't think either has a physical presence
maybe jeenee is sold by some news agencies
@Bob Well that was in Melbourne CBD
But if it's anything like the UK markets, cheap resellers and MVNOs tend to have throttles or get deprioritised compared to "core" network users
@Bob Ah I just looked at Aldi mobile
Also Optus' inter-band CA seems to be flakey, almost feels like they run two networks
B40+B40 CA works fine all the time, B28+B40 most of the time if you have B40 signal, B3 never seems to bond with anything.
Not seen B7 CA work either
@Bob Hmm. Maybe you're on B3 primary. It's 15Mhz so only has a theoretical max of 37.5 up.
I seem to mostly get B28 or B3 primary (25 or 37.5 up), never had B40 or B7 primary (50 up) unless I force it myself
33.2 and 35.8 were the highest I had on B3 and B7 respectively before my UK SIM broke
^^ My rather haphazard analysis of LTE bands on the 3 main AU networks
SIM	Tech	MNC	Band Channel BW	Result CFreq
	LTE	01	700 (28)	9410		20	NA		778.0
	LTE	71	900 (8)		3608		5	NA		940.8
EE	LTE	01	1800 (3)	1275		15	27.4/24.0	1830.0	NO CA
EE	LTE	01	2600 (7)	2950		20	24.7/30.9	2640.0	NO CA
EE	LTE	01	2600 (7)	3148		20	85.0/1.0	2659.8	2x20 CA
					Total		75 (+5)

	LTE	02	700 (28)	9260		10	NA		763.0
EE	LTE	02	1800 (3)	1725		15	65.3/33.2	1857.5	NO CA
3	LTE	02	2300 (40)	38770		20	NA		2312.0
	LTE	02	2300 (40)	38968		20	NA		2331.8
EE	LTE	02	2600 (7)	3350		20	38.4/35.8	2680.0	NO CA
Dammit should have gone with Telstra
Telstra has more actual bandwidth, though Optus has the 40Mhz of unpaired B40. Which in theory means less wasted BW if it's used properly. And in reality, Telstra gives disappointing speeds on B7
02:48
I am evaluating spending $500 on a Beoplay H9. Worth it?
(@allquixotic)
@bwDraco personally, its a good idea to work your way up over time, and decide what you like.
Worth it is relative
...or rather, I should put the money towards the GTX 1080 Ti on my upcoming desktop.
ah
then yes. assuming you're going high refresh rate/high resolution.
Bob
Bob
@TOWMN fyi Telstra resellers don't get full access to the network
@bwDraco I'm wearing them right now; what would you like to know?
02:55
Most of the folk here with flagship video cards have crazyass video setups
Bob
Bob
they get the chunk approximately equivalent to Optus
@allquixotic Never mind; I've determined there are better ways to spend my limited funds.
@bwDraco what resolution are you looking at for your primary monitor?
It'll come down to how quickly I can find a good-paying job.
and Hz
02:57
@allquixotic 1440p, 144Hz.
I'm planning to drive two of these displays.
ah k, the Ti might be justified there
throughput of 447.89Mpps
though chances are you'll only be running one of them for gaming at that level?
my 3440x1440@100Hz is capable of demanding 495.36Mpps
by comparison, 1080p60 is 124.41Mpps
02:59
@JourneymanGeek Most likely. The second display is used for other purposes most of the time, typically for displaying monitoring apps like GPU-Z.
@bwDraco I could do non gaming dual 4K with a 660 ;p
and 4k60 is 496.66Mpps
and I know that video card could handle 1440p with no issues.
I'm very tempted to go Ryzen, but it's got lots of idiosyncrasies (e.g. fiddly relationship with memory of varying speeds, Windows scheduling issues, buggy UEFI firmware, etc.).
Ryzen has loads of potential but a lot of it is untapped.
I don't know when the machine will be built. The earliest I can expect is late April.
@bwDraco I typically ended up building a system one generation after I design it ;p
Nyx was designed as a sandy bridge with a 660 and no SSD
03:05
@JourneymanGeek Astaroth as currently designed:

@Bob sounds like EE too. Only recently did resellers get 4G at all and they're capped at 60Mbps (although they can theoretically connect at 450Mbps over the RAN they still get a 60Mbps cap)
I also do not quite know my budget.
It could be $4000, it could be $1500.
MS Word has got numbered captions and labels. Does it have free-form labels?
I'd like to designate a part of the text as a label and then mention it in several places. If I change the original, the mentions would update (semi)automatically.
(I know how to do this with figures, tables, numbered items, chapter headings. I'd like to do that in a more free-form way.)
Bob
Bob
03:29
@TOWMN I think the Telstra cap is at 150 (single carrier), plus no access to the more regional parts of the network
@TOWMN uh. Vodafone (TPG) on the S7, Optus (OVO) and Telstra (Telstra) on the Xperia.
I actually dunno how to check which bands are in use on the Xperia.
@bwDraco I personally think one needs to start with a budget
Bob
Bob
Did some testing on the S7 before but changing SIMs is a chore.
@NickAlexeev I believe it does, but it's been years since i did that...
@TOWMN ovo and jeenee are Optus, aldi is Telstra I think
@TOWMN oh apparently Boost gets more access to Telstra but idk how much exactly
04:33
what prevents an attacker to replicate sim card data to his sim?
04:51
@Bob ah
Oh yeah, regional roaming and bullshit
(Or lack thereof)
Also amalgamation of smaller operators and spectrum from regional buyouts
The kind of screwey shit we've managed to avoid in the UK.
05:13
@Burgi You're in the wrong job if that's what you want
05:40
Read this how sim card authentication works.. On startup, the phone obtains the IMSI from the SIM card and relays it to the network. Think of this as the “request for access.”
The network takes the IMSI and looks in its internal database for that IMSI’s known authentication key.
The network generates a random number, A, and signs it with the authentication key to create a new number, B. This is the response it would expect if the SIM card is legitimate.
The phone receives A from the network and forwards it to the SIM card, which signs it with its own authentication key to create a new numbe
shouldn't it say if C matches with B then access will be granted?
It is saying if A matches with C then access will be granted..A can't match with C. C is signed and A is signed. B can match with C.
i mean A is unsigned*
05:57
I hate myself again
Fuck my life
Fuck.
@defalt Semantics
semantics?
It's just yet another form of public key AAA
according to me: your phone sends IMSI to the network provider..Network provider looks for its corresponding autentication key..Network provider generates a random number A and signs it with authentication key to make it B..Now it sends A to you and you also sign A with your authentication key to produce C..Now if C matches with B it means you have the same authentication key as the network provider and authentication is succeeded
this article makeuseof.com/tag/why-do-cellphones-need-a-sim-card has slightly misleading information
Bob
Bob
that sounds more like symmetrical encryption
06:14
!!tripleheaddesk
@TOWMN That didn't make much sense. Use the !!/help command to learn more.
!!ultraheaddesk
!!megaheaddesk
@TOWMN That didn't make much sense. Use the !!/help command to learn more.
06:15
i think if they had used assymetric encryption even that would have worked..Network provider would generate A and signs it with the public key associated with the IMSI of your SIM card and then he would send the signed A to YOU and expect you to decrypt it with your private key. Once you decrypt it you would send the original number to the network provider to prove authentication is succeeded
Bob
Bob
@TOWMN ?
@Bob Just. Urgh.
@Bob: What were those other places other than Jaycar you recommended for electronics and stuff again?
(Need to find a USB fan)
Bob
Bob
@TOWMN Daiso has a USB fan for $5.80 :P
Otherwise... officeworks
There's a Daiso literally next door
Got a link btw? My 250kbps internet here makes it painfully slow to find stuff
And my UK SIM requires a USB cable to get around the tethering block. And I still have to fix my second phone so I don't have to constantly faff around with swapping SIM cards
@Bob I find the idea of a non fixed price daiso odd
06:23
What is Daiso anyway
Bob
Bob
@TOWMN Japanese discount shop. Everything's 100yen ($2.80 here though). except some things are different as of two years ago
the oens that aren't labelled are all $2.80
Oooooooohh
That's like Poundland in the UK
Bob
Bob
hm. might've been the $10.40 ones
I can't remember
@TOWMN We used to have proper discount $2 shops but they're all gone now :(
@TOWMN just go in and ask
Daiso AU's website sucks
@Bob Eh, I can't load any websites atm
FFS. Can't decide whether to stay in Australia or not
Should I stay or should I go
Daiso kinda has rotating stock anyway. You don't know what they have till you walk in
06:26
Sure everything costs twice as much, but it's four times more fun
Bob
Bob
@JourneymanGeek they've been in the Sydney hunter st store for years
@Bob I guess "Shy girl problems" would be about as short as I can describe it
Bob
Bob
@TOWMN I'm still confused lol. but ok.
@JourneymanGeek I don't think I've ever seen a fixed price shop of that sort here.
Bob
Bob
not worth it imo, but ... eh
it's not even that hot right now! you seem to have dodged the heatwaves :P
06:31
Is office works still open? I'm only asking cause Jaycar is closed
Also I find it funny my operators' VPN throttling via DPD and ATPD is so good I know of no way to get around it, and yet their tethering/hotspot block is as easy to bypass as not using the separate tethering APN
Oh god, everyone walking in and out of Daiso looks Asian
@Bob that's fine, you're not meant to get it
@Bob error 404
Bob
Bob
@TOWMN depends, some close earlier than others
where are you right now?
@Bob Daiso
Bob
Bob
@TOWMN they don't have the fans?
uh. which street are you on?
It's like a hidden island of Japaneseness on the high street
2
Bob
Bob
lol
06:37
@Bob I found some non-USB mini fans
@Bob Flinders
Bob
Bob
that might be the best description of Daiso I've heard
@TOWMN The ones around you (Elizabeth St, Bourke St) close 7pm
Russel St too
Lots of USB lamps next to one non-USB fan
@Bob Daiso? Or office works?
Bob
Bob
@TOWMN OW
@TOWMN did you ask them? daiso places things weirdly sometimes
then again hunter st daiso was really weird. they had a couple of headphones just hanging 'round the front
@Bob no, im scared of all the Japanese looking people
Bob
Bob
o.o
06:42
o.O
Bob
Bob
@TOWMN :(
@TOWMN your nearest officeworks is on Elizabeth st just past Collins st (head away from flinders st away from the river)
one block down the road
guys do you know what tools youtubers use when they are demonstarting an article with moving images? Like file is transferring from here to there and the file actually moves more like gif..i want to use the same for ppt presentations
@Bob thing is, it looks so normal and unremarkable on the outside
Then you walk inside and it's all like
I want to stay here forever :-(
Heck even my fee free UK credit card works with all the contactless EFTPOS terminals here
Turns out Jaycar isn't closed, just that the opening times for literally everything on Google maps is wrong
Bob
Bob
07:07
@TOWMN odd, most places close 5-6 on sat
Oh wait, it is closed. I just thought it was the wrong day of the week.
Fuck I fail
Bob
Bob
@TOWMN you might find one at coles shop.coles.com.au/online/mobile/national/…
though I can't remember ever seeing one at the local coles
@TOWMN I need one of those
07:23
@TOWMN sounds like daiso
@Bob I guess I'll get one tomorrow, unless I spend all day on the train to Sydney
One part of me is going "stick with the plan" while another is going YOLO
Bob
Bob
@TOWMN we have a lot of stealth daisos here
oh oh
@JourneymanGeek knows this one
the Daiso in Town Hall
that's got a fresh produce thing up the front
waaaaaaiiiiiiii
there's another one at Central?!
it feels like the time I discovered there was one in Chatswood
they're everywhere!
Is this like the Pokemon Go but with Daiso?
Bob
Bob
Jul 15 '13 at 5:52, by Journeyman Geek
@Bob: daiso dosen't sell fresh groceries >_>
:P
ew that photo quality
2013... think i was using a S2
07:42
@Bob: I think Australia's LTE problem is that our phones are too crap. Everywhere else in the world the UE technology is ahead of network deployments. Here it's the other way round.
Bob
Bob
@TOWMN butbutbut my flagship phone :(
@Bob not even close
Bob
Bob
yea :(
There's a grand total of zero phones that can do 5x CA, and even less that can do 5x CA on 5 different bands and 4x4 MIMO
In the UK most networks have two bands max, with the biggest having 3... Here it's 5+
In the UK most networks have two carriers max, with the biggest having 3... Here it's 5+
On the default B3+B7+B28 CA I'd get 80Mbps, if I manually force my phone to B40 instead I get 160Mbps on B40 alone
Even next gen flagships will only support 5-way not 6-way CA
And a lot of people will be concentrated on LAA
Bob
Bob
@TOWMN I think I tried forcing bands before and it's really location dependent
so you end up with your speed limited by the luck of which band you ended up on
07:48
@Bob Yeh. That's basically the problem. Phone isn't capable of using all available bands, and not all bands are deployed everywhere so it becomes lack of the draw.
Bob
Bob
@TOWMN stop giving me excuses to get a S8 :P
I wish mobile modems were easier to find
especially good ones
It's worse when you consider most people probably don't have latest gen flagship phones and can't CA at all which makes load balancing a pain
Bob
Bob
sure, I can get a cheap one that only uses a single carrier
or a slightly-less-cheap one that uses two
but more than that? $300+, almost impossible to find a generic one there's not limited ot theb ands of a single network
@TOWMN yea... I think most of them just end up on B3/B7
which is probably why you see B28 and B40 as faster
speaking of phones. I need to switch networks
Also there's a lot of blue eyed girls here, as well as a police car driving along a tram track
Bob
Bob
vodafone's been pretty shit the last week or so
@TOWMN the tram tracks are shared iirc
been a while since i was in melb though
hm
my current plan lets me make international SMSes/calls
not many Telstra plans do :(
07:51
@Bob not to mention even if it's a decent one the actual detailed spec is nigh on impossible to get hold of without tearing it apart and looking up the chipset datasheet
Bob
Bob
Boost has free calls to 10 countries... guess that might cover it
if I ever need to text or call someone outside those I could always use Skype...
@Bob not this one
@Bob my Optus one would
Bob
Bob
@TOWMN yup. they list bands but not actualCA support
I've had to guess
if it claims 150 down, probably no CA. 300 down, probably 2x CA. etc etc
Bob
Bob
@TOWMN what are you on now?
07:53
This one's very not shared.
Bob
Bob
@TOWMN grandfathered TPG/Vodafone here
it's a good enough plan that I don't really want to switch, but Vodafone... bleh
@TOWMN huh. oh yea melb has more dedicated ones
before Sydney got rid of trams back in the 2000s, we had a lot of shared tracks/roads
08:13
@Bob I'm on the Optus $2 a day thing
But if you go for the monthly thing it includes free international calls, the daily one only includes national
But since I do no calls anyway, meh.#
Bob
Bob
@TOWMN hm, not bad
@Bob Works out to be $60 a month for 15GB, which is better than their 30-day packages :-|
Bob
Bob
@TOWMN But for $60 a month I can get 50 GB
on Optus network too
lol
@Bob Yeah on an MVNO with terrible speeds
Bob
Bob
@TOWMN actually no, IIRC Optus MVNOs get full access to the network
It's only Telstra that does the explicit segmentation.
I've definitely tested 100+ on OVO before
09:23
@Bob oh
Well, YOLO
Is it sad that I'm actually using SSI?
09:42
@jokerdino yes
Tho. I walked into one and a miniso today
@Rahul2001 old tech isn't always bad tech

Bob

it's a choice they made ... to not let you reinstall the same OS from within the same OS ... so you won't change OSes?
do you think that actually makes sense?
cause it doesn't.
also, it's perfectly doable from a in-OS reinstall as of win8, improved in win10
it's surprising that they actually added new features since 2009, no?
sigh.
No. They have not ever been sued for not providing a downgrade path. Nor would they ever have to.
It's a massive undertaking to correctly migrate installed applications, etc..
It's not a "poof" you get this feature for fre and we don't want to enable it!

@Comicbookguy wtf does that even ahve to do with the ability to downgrade?!?!

@jokerdino Don't give him ideas :)

@jokerdino Not since late last night ...
@DavidPostill I kinda have a vague memory of someone named Clippy hanging around the chat room.
@DavidPostill :S
@jokerdino There are no SU users named "clippy". Could be from another site ...
13:16
I guess probably someone with a clippy gravatar maybe.
Oh man, we are going to have a whole generation of people who have never experienced clippy.

Another question: If a person receives 21 upvotes on his answer in one day, only 20 of them increase his rep, right?
Yup. 200 reputation not counting bounties and accepts after that
But say you got 199 reputation, you get 1 reputation of 10 from the next upvote
I suspect if that got moved, it would be kicked back here
13:48
Yeah, it's a pretty bad question.
Gah! Hurry up delivery driver!
@Mokubai What you waiting for?
New shiney.... Surface tablet
Been trying to get on with one of the cheap £150 Windows tablets and they're OK, better than running Firefox on Android by a long shot, but it's so down on power...

@JourneymanGeek My speakers are dying :(
damn, the M audios?
Yeah
Sound is constantly dropping out
Then it's gone completely until you fiddle with the volume knob or power cycle them
Pretty weird IMO
Now I cranked the volume up on the speakers and turned it down in Windows and it got more stable
Maybe I'm drawing too much power in this room :P
I dunno, I've never had this happen before. Seems weird
I might have to dig deeper if this continues
Otherwise, you'll now know how long they would have lasted you :D
