12:02 AM
@bwDraco a lot of the time the point of a technical test isn't to pass everything, its to see how far you'll go

12:34 AM
imgur.com/gallery/gkZjV#d7VXsxu das keyboard teardown and repair
really cool. Especially if anyone here finds a nice mechanical keyboard in the trash ;)

1:13 AM
@Bob Eh, probably saves me some money anyway, as I can't just keep putting off getting a local one
Just have to choose between Optus Telstra and Sodafone Hutch

> So you want to give endangered whales powerful electric shocks. Great! I'm happy to help. This is definitely a very normal thing to want to do.

1:43 AM
Have to rearrange my room because the current layout does not let me set up books easily.
Will be back in a bit.

@bwDraco k

> Victorian Rail Track Corp. (VicTrack)
Well that explains the un-named unconnectable mobile network I keep seeing...
And Optus is owned by Singtel? :-o

2:27 AM
has been a long while
TPG hasn't announced ANYTHING AT ALL yet

3:23 AM
@Bob Dammit
This requires my brian to work

that lazy layabout Brian

3:38 AM
@bOB: tHAT ARTICLE OF YOURS SEEMS TO NOT MENTION tELSTRA AND oPTUS HAVING 3g ON THE 1700 BAND
Might be because they don't >_>

@TOWMN hm. Invese Titlecase?

Bob
@TOWMN uh.?
are they supposed to?

@Bob Nope :-P

Bob
I'm confused

1700 band uses the same downstream frequencies (2100) as the 2100 band 1, so when your phone's set to the 1700 band it'll still pick up any downstreams in the 2100 band but try to transmit back up in 1700 instead of 1900, and fails
Basically the xx00 band designations are all lies
The 2100 band is actually centered on 2140/1960 (D/U) while the 1700 band is actually 2130/1730
So when I did a network scan with my phone set to 1700 it actually picked up two of the 3 2100 networks.

Bob
4:27 AM
:S

Meh
So yeah turns out what I figured out pretty much agrees with that forum you linked
Telstra has no 2G in Melbourne, with some of the GSM900 band being repurporsed for experimental LTE service
Optus has GSM 900 and 1800, but 1800 won't let me connect. Vodafone has GSM900 only
Telstra has 5Mhz of 3G850 and 10Mhz of 3G2100
Optus has 5Mhz of 3G900 and 10Mhz of 3G2100
Vodafone has 5Mhz of 3G900 and 10Mhz of 3G2100
Very much evenly balanced :shocked:
LTE wise Telstra has 20Mhz at 778, 15Mhz at 1830, 40Mhz at 2650, and 5Mhz at 900.8 which you can't use.
Optus has 10Mhz at 763, 15Mhz at 1857.5, 40Mhz at 2322, 20Mhz and 20Mhz at 2680
God dammit Australia is so far ahead of the UK on spectrum allocation...
Oh yeah forgot Vodafone. 10Mhz at 870, 30Mhz at 1835, 10Mhz at 2110

4:52 AM
GeForce GTX 1080 Ti reviews are up. One thing that just came up on my mind is Radeon Vega and its High Bandwidth Cache Controller.
The HBCC would allow, among other things, a card with 4 GB of HBM2 plus 8 GB of GDDR5X. (It does not have go to system memory, despite presentations stating that it's capable of doing this).
If they do this right, they'd be able to get winning memory bandwidth without having to use too much (extremely expensive) HBM2.
(The Vega chip demoed at Capsaicin & Cream has 8 GB, but a consumer version might not have much memory so as to reduce cost.)
Future-proofing the card for games and applications that need lots of VRAM can just be done by combining HBM2 (on the GPU package) with GDDR5X (on the graphics card, off-package). Cheaper or SFF variants of Vega have less HBM2, omit the GDDR5X, and go to the system memory when more memory is needed.
All speculation, but just imagining ways AMD could use the HBCC.

5:08 AM
On cards featuring both types of memory, they could use slower GDDR5(X) to keep costs and power consumption down with no visible impact on performance thanks to the HBM2 and HBCC.
After all, this is the point of the HBCC: make the very most out of the expensive HBM2 and combine it with more conventional graphics memory or even system memory.

6:06 AM
I think I might skip Bob Land Sydney

@Comicbookguy "yes"
HDDs have never been read only memory.
CD Roms, might be but WORM is more accurate
Could you smack whoever taught you Hard disks were read only memory ?
early systems had their OS on a ROM (and presumably some flavour of EPROM later)

Bob
@TOWMN :(
@JourneymanGeek I prefer WORN :P

@Bob could always compress it by piping to /dev/null

lol
I vaguely remember there's actually one practical use for WORN

1 down, four to go.
(exams)

Bob
7:44 AM
@JourneymanGeek storing encryption keys, where technically it's read by the device (TPM, HSM, etc.) but unreadable from outside

makes sense I guess

@Rahul2001 All the best
Is there any mouse on the same price bracket as the G300s but larger

user226528
Hey, guys. Does anyone know why upvotes get locked after a while?

you get 5 minutes to change your mind on votes

Because there's a potential for abuse.

user226528
What abuse?

Mass unupvotes when you mad.

user226528
11:31 AM
Did it ever happen?

:)

user226528
?

user226528
Also, downvotes get locked too? Mass undownvote when you are mad?

user226528
That can't happen.

Bob

11:33 AM
I guess shipping stops at the harbour.

user226528
Well, here is the thing. I upvoted an answer because I thought it was very smart. After testing it, I found that it was totally wrong. Can I tell a moderator to remove my upvote?

Yeah, apparently one of the reasons why we have such a feature is to prevent "vote first, read later".

Bob
@FleetCommand you can retract an upvote after it's been edited. mods have no control over voting.

user226528
I see. So I must assume every answer is written by an asshole unless proven otherwise and only upvote when proven otherwise.

11:38 AM
yup yup

Not a bad starting assumption I guess.
Critical thinking and such other things.

user226528
I will never vote again.

people who command fleets are definite arseholes... ;)

user226528
@Burgi LOL. Yeah. They are.

@FleetCommand and thats why brexit happened!
i'm just a lowly viper pilot

user226528
11:41 AM
What's a viper pilot?

:o
the mk 2 is obviously the best

user226528
So, every fleet commander in Battlestar Galactica is an a-h?

your words not mine

user226528
My question mark, not yours.

obviously not the Old Man

11:46 AM
sooooooooooooooooooo
how hacked is it @Burgi ?
been to watch daughters dancing, brought some sugar, woo

SQL injection from somewhere
its got a truck load of WP plugins

heh joys

legacy sites

not the new one?

the one we updated yesterday

12:00 PM
@FleetCommand one does not speak ill of superior officers. Even when they cannot find their own arses with a trained smurf and a map sir. Not that I would ever accuse a superior officer of being one without good cause...

I thought it was a new site?

new features
its got spaghetti code and a ton of 3rd party plugins

user226528
@JourneymanGeek If it makes anyone here feel better, I choose the name Fleet Command after Karan Sjet from Homeworld. Having to rig herself to literally feel and share all emotions of her entire fleet was nothing short of brave.

@FleetCommand Karan Sjet isn't an officer. She works for a living

basically we've added this government agency branding to the site and its like painting a HUGE target on the site

12:04 PM
@FleetCommand I served a few years in the army. As an enlisted man, its my duty to make officer jokes, and sometimes get away with it.

user226528
@JourneymanGeek I have escaped conscription on medical grounds. So, I totally know that.

@FleetCommand escaping conscripion on medical grounds here is hard
short of being a complete homicidal nutter (which almost always works)

user226528
Not having legs doesn't work?

user226528
Or not having hands?

teeth?

user226528
12:09 PM
In my case it was eyes.

ah, I've not come across anyone legally blind.
Worst I've seen is a guy in a giant leg brace
and various malfunctioning internal organs.
And said nutter.
@FleetCommand I think missing limbs would exclude you.

they let @JourneymanGeek in and he isn't even human
mostly

@Burgi There's such a thing as a dog unit.
Though I ended up in logistics for some reason.

do they fit you with a harness and a little trolley to pull?

nope.
Mostly slept under a table, and barked at people.

user226528
12:14 PM
Do they let you watch Battlestar Galactica?

Once nearly accidentally bit yelled at a warrant officier for smoking in my store (got away with it, he thought it was hillarious, and I was right, and everyone looks the same at ankle height I wasn't looking up
@FleetCommand I think I got out around the time it came out

user226528
@Burgi So, after five iterations of development, Viper Mk. II is better than mk. VII. How comes?

I think I'd likely get excluded on mental grounds

@FleetCommand have you seen BSG?

I normally hold my crazy in check, but in that situation, not sure I could.

user226528
12:19 PM
@Burgi No.

the mk 7 is more susceptible to cylon hacking

Hi im facing a problem posted here on a firefox browser runnin on win 10 even with latest flash installed i cant get the login option whereas the same works smooth on edge browser so what does that mean??

what site?

Oh yeah
@Burgi NMS is at something like half price now
Worth it, or should I wait for it to go down to a few dollars? ;p

@JourneymanGeek still not sure its worth it

12:22 PM
@Burgi oneassist.in top right the login box itself doesn't load

@user285oo6 site is broke

@user285oo6 the server is offline

isup.me <----
Next time...

@user285oo6 works for me
are you blocking javascript?

@Burgi u getting the login box top right?? on which browser

12:25 PM
firefox

hm. Works for me too on firefox
51.0.1 Oh look an update ._.

@Burgi dunno if using or not

@JourneymanGeek FF 52?

@jokerdino uh huh

@Burgi is it same like the above image

12:31 PM
How long before FF60?

Nope
@jokerdino 6-8 weeks

Sounds about right.

this is the diff i got first is ff 52 and second part is edge

i see the 3 buttons

i tried the troubleshooting page given in ff but it worked only when i disabled hardware acceleration but later once the page reloads it doesn't

12:36 PM
ah!
@Bob seems some folk sideload android apps to the tickwatch - which makes the FTP server make a little more sense
0_0
OOOH

@Burgi any workarounds for this

i have my own problems today unfortunately

@Bob there's limited androidwear functionality it seems

Bob
o.O

stuff like yatse (my OSMC remote) and afew other things seem to work
but keep has an app but no worky
still

12:47 PM
@Burgi hope u solve them soon
@jokerdino can u suggest any workaround for getting those buttons in ff 52.0

I don't know any

is 52 the latest version?
if so, ask the developers of the site why they don't show up

1:05 PM
@user285oo6 they work for everyone else. Try "restart with addins disabled"

@JourneymanGeek Still keeping up with the QC comics?
@XKCD No 3.5mm jack. SAD!

@JourneymanGeek I don't know, my favorites are from 2013-mid15. There isn't nearly enough pintsize in the new ones.

1:23 PM
I always felt pintsize was cheap humour

So yesterday my second G602 broke
Middle mouse button again

Bob
@OliverSalzburg :(

Luckily I had a spare, but I need a new mouse type

Bob
@OliverSalzburg mine was iffy for a bit but it fixed itself
then it got gummy and I cbf'd opening it up again so I smacked it a bit... now it feels loose/funny but sitll works

Well, the button still feels normal. It just doesn't do anything
It stopped sporadically for a couple of clicks before it completely died
Exactly like it happened before
Having a spare G602 is really a new high in my life :P
I'm up for model suggestions, if anyone cares to deliver one :)

1:31 PM
@OliverSalzburg Yeah, my middle button broke too :(

@Rahul2001 Same model?

@OliverSalzburg yep

I don't get nice things

@Rahul2001 Woah. I see a class action lawsuit in our future!

It has a 3-yr warranty though, right? Mine broke in one.

1:32 PM
No idea about the warranty
But, yeah, I think I had a free replacement from Amazon in the past
I'd much rather have a mouse that dies from the usual over-griminess than a technical defect
...or do I :P
Maybe this is a sanitary safety feature
Mouse dies by itself after having been touched too much by sauce fingers

XD
@djsmiley2k I haven't either in a long time...

either either?

Actually, no, scratch that. I got a wonderful girlfriend.

@Rahul2001 JUST IN CASE SHE IS WATCHING!

@Burgi lol
@Burgi She is amazing XD
She makes me study though :/

1:41 PM
"study"
uh huh

Which one is this?

@jokerdino Ikra

Sorry, I lost count.

hmmm

1:43 PM
@Rahul2001 I've got 2 kids, I'll get no nice things for the next 20 or so years :P

Bob
@OliverSalzburg ha. I bought mine in a pair but haven't used the other yet
been using this... 3 years?

@djsmiley2k Kids... are adorable. Especially pre-teen ages.
Teen years... are okay, as long as you aren't too strict as a parent
Also, please don't put restrictions on them dating.

@Rahul2001 not all cultures are as messed up confused old fashioned as indian cultures XD

XD
@JourneymanGeek Just a teen's two cents.

2 paise*

1:50 PM
XD

@Bob That's because you never close your browser tabs. Your middle-button is underused ;P

Bob
@OliverSalzburg but I make up for it by opening tabs

:D
When it happened yesterday I was cursing out Ebay for disallowing middle-click to open new tabs
Took me a while to figure it out

Bob
that's usually how I first notice :P

> Blue whales, which are even larger than humans,[citation needed]

2:00 PM
Well, it was my luck, that the sporadic failures were such that clicking a link did nothing, but clicking a tab closed it
So, in my mind, it was obvious that Ebay is fucking with me

byr of course

2:30 PM
ROFL
i just checked the uptime thing and the hacked site has had less downtime today than it does normally

that's why it hasn't bene hacked yet xD

Today i presented a seminar on Kadmelia distributed hash table. It worked so well. I'm surprised most of the people don't know how does bit-torrent actually work. The only answer i heard was just a half answer that"it is P2P based". I'm here to thanks to @DavidPostill . He gave me some references of DHT.

lol
@defalt did you use fake colonial british accents?

i've a very decent english accent

2:35 PM
meow

(referencing superuser.com/a/269324/10165, Probably my first really popular answer. Posted when sick and high as a kite on flu meds)

That was not my reference. The one david gave me i put that as refrence..
I think that question was of stack overflow
I find kademlia DHT protocol very interesting. I think i should give a hand to develop it and make it more robust for torrenting.

@defalt for the fake british accent joke

Bob
the DHT really is only a rather small part of the BT protocol..

@Bob BT is not a protocol. It is just a client that uses DHT. What is a big part then? From clicking on the magnet link to start download everything runs through DHT. Finding and locating and connecting all these stuffs

2:44 PM
@defalt bitorrent is totally a protocol
And it can run without DHT
DHT is actually a workaround for when trackers arn't usable
magnet links are also not a core part of the original protocol

magnet links are better than original BT which uses tracking server

@defalt Hm, that seems interesting!

"better"
simpler, certainly
but there's some situations where having torrent files is nice
One of my home download boxes used a "drop folder" for downloads

@JourneymanGeek you know my seminar was based on Distributed Technology
i was supposed to choose any topic based on it

@defalt but but..
You said BT wasn't a protocol.

2:52 PM
yeah i did..which standard protocol BT is?

bluetooth?

Bittorrent is bitorrent

How do I downgrade a whole group of packages (qt5 5.8 to 5.7) with pacman??

Bob
In fact, here's the protocol spec.
DHT is not a critical part of the BT protocol.
At most, it is a substitute for the traditional tracker.
It's not required. It's not even supported by all clients that use the bittorrent protocol.

both DHT and magnet links are "workarounds"

Bob
2:58 PM
There's Bittorrent the application, which was the first implementation of Bittorrent the protocol.
Bittorrent the protocol defines how uploads, downloads, etc., all happen. It now has a life independent of the mainline Bittorrent client - the protocol is the one thing in common amongst all "Bittorrent clients"
The only thing a DHT has to do with those is the chunk discovery process, IIRC.

@Bob which, semi ironically got replaced by a upstart implementation... which has things not everyone supports ;p
