I didn't know either
tho i fail to see how it's less secure
depends how good your physical access security vs someones kneecaps is
pki should STILL use something you know, as well as something you have
ssh has it right, keys, secured with a passphase.
PKI is something you have, Passwords are something you know
iit shouldn't be one or the other :/
PKi with encrypted disk maybe, but then once it's unlocked...
damn this inconvience!
@DavidPostill Yeah, but they're explicitly nude beaches. Not just general beaches where many women go topless, as is the norm in many parts of France, for example.

Q: Ping IP works, but no TCP/UDP

akrasuski1I have a new router and it's problematic to connect to the Internet through it. I am unable to download, ping or make a nslookup of example.com: $ curl -vvv example.com * Rebuilt URL to: example.com/ * Could not resolve host: example.com * Closing connection 0 curl: (6) Could not resolve host: e...

welp that's a confusing one!
unless 'example.com' doesn't actually respond to web requests via ip address (vhosts etc)
inwhich case it is a dns issue, only!
@Burgi those are cocopops...
And it's my wife eating them, i'm at work :(

@djsmiley2k yuk
worst breakfast ever
@Bob No perfect forward secrecy
Anyone who captures data now and recovers the static key at some point in the future will be able to decrypt any and all existing data from any past session
Bob
Bob
12:18
@Annaduh ah... that sucks
there's no reason a static key can't do PFS, is there?
I mean, it's an implementation thing?
@Bob The key is used as the encryption key
Sure if you used TLS instead of static key, yeah, but then you wouldn't be using static key
@Burgi You know nothing Jon Snow.
You could use, say, TLS security with static key authentication and authorization
Bob
Bob
@Annaduh yea, I was more thinking about treating the key as a password
but if it's used as the actual encryption key... blech
But that's not how OpenVPN does it
12:20
o_O orly?
interesting
i presumed everything was sensible!
@djsmiley2k You talking to us or Burgi?
why the timers in the config to rotate keys o_O O_o
only replies directly to @Burgi are for @Burgi
@djsmiley2k That's for when you don't use static key
Static key is recommended in the config for testing and/or low security uses only
12:21
I presumed the default setup was a rotating key initiised using the cert or something
@djsmiley2k That is the default setup
TLS PKI
Bob
Bob
@Annaduh sounds like it's really only suitable for dev
my minion has just said he is hungry and i said "i thought you were romanian!" :D
 You can do another step to strengthen the encryption layer. The temporary session key was already mentioned, which is used for encrypting the tunnelled network data. This key will __rotate by default every hour__. But you can also tweak how often it gets rotated by adjusting --reneg-sec, --reneg-pkts and --reneg-bytes. See the man page for more information about these options: community.openvpn.net/openvpn/wiki/Openvpn23ManPage
@Burgi that's a dad joke
12:24
i'll be honest he had the same reaction... :(
I need a less efficient CPU
So where are you seeing these defaults @Annaduh ? seems to disagree with the openvpn pages... ?
Maybe I'm misreading it
"less efficient" .....
wait whut?
@djsmiley2k The openVPN pages don't disagree...
@JourneymanGeek to heat the room
12:25
@Burgi This
My GPU generates 220W of heat, my CPU is only generating 80W, and that's overclocked to the max in burn test yadda yadda
do some gaming
or bitcoin mining
go buy yourself a PIV mini ITX? ;p
I don't think P4 and mITX coexisted
oh
We had one
12:26
get yourself hired by the cat cafe as the grumpy cat
with PATA to boot
OpenVPN can work in two different modes in regards to encryption. It can use static encryption or Public Key Infrastructure (PKI). In this How-To we will cover PKI encryption, as that is the most common way to use OpenVPN.
The advantage of static encryption is that it is very easy to configure. The disadvantage of this type setup is that if your encryption key is compromised, all VPN data can easily be decrypted - even VPN data which has been captured in the past.
That's what I said...
I thought you said the default is static
12:28
Ah I re-read now
static is insecure, and PKI is over complicated
I read that as a single statement
@djsmiley2k That is a single statement
Now you got me confused
@Rahul2001 Does she know?
2
More importantly, do her parents know?
@Annaduh NO
wtf is this o_O
Notice how the "Facebook Comments Plugin" link at the end of the page isn't clickable
12:36
@Rahul2001 erm, i closed it after it kept loading different pages.
Can anyone say memory leak?
you might be viewing a very large bitmap in chrome?
@djsmiley2k Nah, just a Godaddy tab I had open for a few weeks
Godaddy as been advertising extensively here in India
12:43
AVOID!
@Rahul2001 Bitdefender blocked me from even loading that page in the first place
that appears to be an attack site
It is a scam site
@DavidPostill Did you open it?
Now I'm curious....
12:45
> Stephen Hawking credits his ability to function and maintained focused on such a high level to a certain set of "smart drugs" that enhance cognitive brain function and neural connectivity, while strengthening the prefrontal cortex and boosting memory and recall.
y would you link that...
(not the image)
@Rahul2001 Yes. Why are you posting malware links?
> n an interview with Anderson Cooper, Stephen Hawking said that his brain is sharper than ever, more clear and focused and he credits a large part to using InteliGEN. Hawking went on to add "The brain is like a muscle, you got to work it out and use supplements just like body builders use, but for your brain, and that’s exactly what I’ve been doing to enhance my mental capabilities".
@DavidPostill It wasn't malware for me
I'll poke at it in haiku later
12:46
(sorry)
@djsmiley2k http://www.mis4560066rrcd.us/
also not clicking :P
@DavidPostill why did you open that in the same browser session as Super User? if you're logged into Google, it's possible they could exploit a vulnerability and steal your session cookie
@JourneymanGeek I'm not going to flag the original site link but could you please nuke it? don't want any lurkers accidentally clicking it later
@allquixotic Is that a known vuln?
Also, I trusted a regular :O
can we get the URL nuked until its confirmed safe?
12:48
also, not logged into my proper google account here, as i'm at work XD
Oops. Nuked. And the earlier post.
@djsmiley2k the potential to steal cookies and other browsing data (as well as extensively fingerprinting the browser to understand which specific user visited) are known weaknesses, meaning that specific vulnerabilities can lead to that information being stolen
Sorry. On walkies
there have been vulnerabilities, in the past, that led to that kind of stuff happening, and there are no exhaustive measures in place to fully prevent it from ever being possible again
visiting an attack website on the modern HTML5 web with WebRTC, WebGL, NaCL, screen sharing, mic sharing, GPS sharing, camera sharing, lots of different TLS protocols, cookies, HTML5 storage, Flash, ... is about as safe as visiting websites in unpatched, original Internet Explorer 6.0 on Windows XP RTM with no firewall or virus scanner or ad blocker
I recommend against it
nod
I didn't expect someone here to link something like that :/
@Rahul2001 Not blaming you btw
And I forget I'm on windows here too xD
Is it bad to lol at stuff like this superuser.com/questions/1153497/…
12:53
nope it is funny
my advice has always been that preventing your visit to malicious websites in the first place is the singular most reliable solution to avoiding information disclosure or system compromise from the web
corporate firewalls that block malicious websites; adblockers that include blockers for attack sites; Bitdefender's blacklist; etc. are a great start
@djsmiley2k what, users being clueless and hosing their own system? nope, perfectly fine, laugh away
@allquixotic I already have (known) attack sites blocked. Virus scan shows no viruses.
Link is shown as clean in virus total virustotal.com/en/url/…
@DavidPostill interesting; it could be a randomly loaded advertiser as part of their ad network that is linking to and distributing the attack site
or the site could ordinarily be genuine and has been attacked by someone else to inject that content
hard to say, but I trust bitdefender's assessment that it is a malicious attack page
even the original link looks shady
It was the attack site I tested
and the one you posted about a page ago is even more shady
13:00
@allquixotic That was the one I tested. Not the original link (which I don't have a copy of)
@DavidPostill hmm... at first, Bitdefender blocked the original link Rahul posted, but now it only blocks the direct link to the attack site
now the original site loads and it doesn't appear to have any ads (though uBlock is blocking quite a lot of stuff), and it just contains terrible fake news
the attack site is probably not good enough to exploit zero-days to compromise your system, but the threat of that as a possibility is going to remain lingering for a long, long time, and occasionally there will be vulnerabilities detected and exploited in the wild this way
@allquixotic virustotal.com/en/url/… is the original site. One report (1/68) -> phishing site.
@DavidPostill amusingly, it does appear to contain information that would mislead the ignorant into thinking that it might be a good idea to buy fake supplements or other such nonsense pseudoscientific "drugs" that are either sugar pills or actively harmful
Compromised ad sounds likely. But I have ads blocked ...
why the hell have we bought a used space capsule?
13:05
if someone read it and believed it, it might cause them to intentionally make a purchase of a fake product
@Burgi ???
@Burgi "the vehicle will be go on display in the Science Museum" sounds like a good reason to me :)
i'd rather we spend the money on SpacePort UK or something
> MotoGP racer Valentino Rossi has surprisingly put his name forward to replace Nico Rosberg at Mercedes
@allquixotic Yeah I got two totally different sites too
@Burgi To inspire future space capsule users
13:11
"Hopefully it may act as an inspiration for the next generation of scientists and engineers,"
It's Tim Peake's capsule and it's going in a museum
It's not like buying a new, unused capsule and putting it in a museum is particularly better
@DavidPostill I can call US numbers for free. Should I fire up a VM and call them? ;p
lol. Only if you are bored :)
we didn't buy helen sharman's capsule...
@Burgi Maybe it wasn't for sale? We do have her spacesuit :)
13:13
grumble grumble
@Burgi We already have a Spaceport UK
Spaceport is a tourist attraction in Seacombe, Wallasey, Merseyside, North West England. The attraction's main topic of interest is space and space travel suited to visitors aged 7 or older. Visitors learn about space as they walk through different themed galleries, which all have a variety of interactive and audio-visual exhibits. Spaceport was opened on 26 July 2005 by Merseytravel Chairman Mark Dowd. A visit to the centre takes about two hours, which includes half an hour spent in the Spacedome planetarium. This section of the attraction is on the ground floor at the back of the building. ...
The British commercial spaceport competition was a plan by the UK government announced in early 2014 to select a site, build a commercial spaceport, and have it in operation by 2018. Although six sites were shortlisted for possible selection by 2015, the competition was ended without a selection in May 2016 and replaced by a statement from the UK government regulatory agency that they would support rules that would allow a commercial spaceport to be built at any suitable location. The UK-sponsored spaceport envisioned in the competition was intended to be used to launch both human-carrying flights...
@DavidPostill they are meant to be building one in devon
@Rahul2001 Is she the girl you mentioned before? The one who was at a time sending mixed signals etc?
@ThatBrazilianGuy Yes
13:16
@Rahul2001 Well, congrats!
Thanks :D
when is your first date?
@Burgi Soon :)
i recommend pizza, its low pressure and you can talk
13:18
@Burgi Erm Newquay is in Cornwall not Devon
Okay...
Rahul's got a firlfriend at an age where I hadn't had my first kiss yet... .___.
and if you find out she hates pizza you can get rid
@ThatBrazilianGuy Not the one who compared my nose to that of Bart Simpson though...
I suggest we take his geek membership card from him.
13:18
@DavidPostill meh same difference ;)
Sep 16 at 15:18, by Rahul2001
Yesterday a girl compared my nose to that of Bart Simpson... Not sure if she was flirting :/
@ThatBrazilianGuy I haven't had my first kiss yet... :|
Oh. Here, you can keep it... For now.
so what you actually have is a date, not a girlfriend
@Burgi Accurate
i think you oversold this...
13:20
@Burgi Well, if two persons agree to call each other boyfriend and girlfriend, then that's what they are. Even if they don't kiss. There have been lots of relationships like that in the past, exclusively by letters, etc...
I bought a rose for her, but she didn't come to school today :/
Awwwwwwwwwwwn <3
Oh. That's sad ...
i wish i had gone to a mixed school :(
What's a mixed school?
13:21
@ThatBrazilianGuy co-ed
What's a co-ed?
Ditto. That's why I was so shy around women till I was like 30 ...
both genders are taught in the same school at the same time
@ThatBrazilianGuy two sexes genders in the same school.
That's... normal schools, right? Like... every school ever?
13:22
not in the UK
its quite common here for schools to be separated on gender
Weird. Why though?
i went to an all boys school and my sister went to an all girls school
@ThatBrazilianGuy There are plenty of single sex schools in the UK. Usually the ones with the higher reputation. Single sex supposedly is less distraction therefore more learning.
@Burgi I thought that was only from the movies. Well, not really, but I thought that was really a minority. It's so overwhelmingly uncommon here I think I don't even think about it.
@Rahul2001 statistically boys perform better when there aren't soft and squishy females around
13:24
I think only super rich, really elitist and ultra conservative people here would have schools like this.
@Burgi Uh, co-ed is not distracting. At all. You just get used to half the class being filled by people with long hair who are super weird to talk to...
@Rahul2001 Statistics would disagree with you.
@DavidPostill As much as I would like to believe it, mathematics cannot sum up people :P
When I was around 13 or 14 I moved to a school in a richer neighboorhood and for a couple of months I was constantly lost in wonder of "OMG how can these girls be sooo pretty and how come everyone acts so naturally"
However it would last usually a couple seconds and then after that I would, too, act naturally
I was in a single sex school until I was 18. Didn't really notice girls in JC. Uni, sure, one or two.
And my grades didn't drop, I was always top 3 in the class.
@JourneymanGeek hey
@ThatBrazilianGuy So you were a statistical outlier :)
lo
my grades were always terrible. ;p
13:29
@ThatBrazilianGuy THAT'S NOT POSSIBLE FOR A GEEK TO ACHIEVE!
There were only 3 in his class.
lol
harsh
Single-sex education, also known as single-gender education, is the practice of conducting education where male and female students attend separate classes or in separate buildings or schools. The practice was common before the twentieth century, particularly in secondary education and higher education. Single-sex education in many cultures is advocated on the basis of tradition as well as religion, and is practiced in many parts of the world. Recently, there has been a surge of interest and establishment of single-sex schools due to educational research. Single sex education is practiced in many...
@jokerdino man, What's that I smell? A sick burn?
Amusingly, I think @jokerdino might have been at one of the other branches of my alma mater
@jokerdino you were in one of the ACS schools right?
Yeah, I was in Independent.
13:30
@JourneymanGeek the palaeontology department?
Yeah, I was in barker.
And you were Barker I think?
yup
Where else would I woof? ;p
Now that I repcapped...
How/why did this HNQ? ._. superuser.com/questions/1153391/…
@Rahul2001 Well, I'm not asian so my parents never killed me when I showed up with a 8.5 or even a 7
@DavidPostill I know it is a serious formal study, or at least seems so, but that sounds so counterintuitive for me.
There should be a way of repeating the test in different cultures and comparing the results
@ThatBrazilianGuy I get pretty good grades in most subjects. And my mom won't kill me if I get bad grades. Although she probably will get upset if I fail a subject
13:33
@JourneymanGeek Flagged for undisclosed self-promotion :)
@DavidPostill At the cost of 30+ years of social awkwardness though
@Rahul2001 Yeah. maybe.
@Rahul2001 I never did. Until university, that is. Then I failed, hard and fast.
@Rahul2001 yes
@DavidPostill There's a reason I waited till I repcapped ;p
13:34
You see, I was so used at getting good grades in high school, I never got used to actually studying. It then bit me really hard when I got to uni.
i would have rather gone to a mixed school, done worse in school and been better at girls
@JourneymanGeek Really? That's the 2nd time today you have self-promoted ;)
You still have time to get better at things.
@DavidPostill really?
where i grew up is one of the few places in the country to have grammar schools and does the 11+ exam
13:36
3 hours ago, by Journeyman Geek
I got another HNQ. Mine's the only answer. HOW DOES THIS THING EVEN WORK ._.
And it's certainly possible to meet someone online ;)
@DavidPostill I assert that's a complaint rather than a self promo ;p
internet dating sucks
in my experience it is worse than real dating
i must have sent 100s of dating requests to girls on eharmony and not had a single bite
@jokerdino Well, one does. But school is a crash-course. And during school you don't have to worry about jobs and real life as a kid.
13:38
@Burgi My grammar school is now coed and an academy school whatever that is.
eh. That's different from running into someone with similar interests online and giving it a shot
In my experience, school is much, much, much more a social setting than a learning one.
@ThatBrazilianGuy neither should you worry about girl friends?
As a true geek, I obviously failed the first and aced the latter.
@ThatBrazilianGuy YES!
Wait, what's the difference between grammar schools normal schools?
13:39
@DavidPostill my high school is single sex (still) but the local grammar is mixed
I'm not very good as this whole being social thing
@jokerdino I don't, I just sometimes cringe about my own past...
@ThatBrazilianGuy Everyone does that. Even me
@Rahul2001 grammar schools are for kids who are good at acads
I think so
13:40
yeah
I would to. Everyone makes mistakes has learning experiences.
i was borderline to go there
@jokerdino Something like that.
shrug
And apparently, most grammar schools only exist around North England these days?
13:41
yeah
> the local grammar is mixed
Does that mean boys and girls speak the same language? ;p
weirdly the one place where social mobility is required...
@jokerdino Wrong.
This is a list of the current 164 state-funded fully selective schools (grammar schools) in England, as enumerated by Statutory Instrument. The 1998 Statutory Instrument listed 166 such schools. However, in 2000 Bristol Local Education Authority, following consultation, implemented changes removing selection by 11+ exam from the entry requirements for two of the schools on this original list. This list does not include former direct grant grammar schools which elected to remain independent, often retaining the title "grammar school". For such schools see the list of direct grant grammar schools...
@ThatBrazilianGuy i'm not sure girls and boys EVER speak the same language
3
@ThatBrazilianGuy INCONCEIVABLE!
13:42
Hi. Is there a good place on SE to ask about Wikipedia?
webapps?
there is a site for webapps
Or should I just try a WP IRC channel?
@FaheemMitha It depends on the question. But webapps is the most likely
WP is on-topic on webapps?
Bob
Bob
13:42
!!tell 33940007 thatword
WP is wordpress btw...
Does that mean I can't use it to mean Wikipedia?
@FaheemMitha Well there's WordPress Development but it's mostly for devs, not users.
@DavidPostill Righto
13:43
@FaheemMitha You can, but people will get confused
^--- this
Wiki generally could be used to mean wikipedia.
or any wiki...
13:44
@Burgi We did buy her spacesuit though
Mmmm. Cookies
2
Ok, looking at webapps now. Thanks.
@DavidPostill How about "There are lots of grammar schools in the North."?
@Annaduh @DavidPostill already mentioned that an hour ago...
Some idiot just trashed this article- en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mohamed_Yusuf. Is it ok to just ask what to do? Or is that too specific?
13:46
@jokerdino lol. Lots or many would be OK. I haven't actually bothered to count then for a north / south divide.
@FaheemMitha too specific
@FaheemMitha take it to the talk page?
@Burgi bummer
wikipedia has its own discussion forum for this
@jokerdino talk page for the article?
13:47

it doesn't look trashed to me btw...
@Burgi Yes, I see it. If I complain there, will someone see it?
@Burgi See the history. :-) Some moron removed most of the content.
Bob
Bob
@FaheemMitha you could just revert as vandalism yourself
Yeah, just roll it back.
13:48
I'm not sure what to roll it back to.
ah
@Burgi I wasn't here an hour ago
let me sign in
Bob
Bob
@FaheemMitha The last good revision.
I'm a bit puzzled by the last revision by Bgwhite.
13:49
@Annaduh yes you were...
1 hour ago, by Anna duh
@Rahul2001 Does she know?
How do I see diffs?
I think someone already rolled it back
@Bob 29th november....
When he said "Just trashed", I assumed, just now not weeks ago
Yes, the 29th November. That was about a week ago, I guess.
@Burgi That was 1.5 hours ago
Bob
Bob
13:51
@FaheemMitha that was a semi-automated edit to fix syntax
it says 1 hr ago
20 minutes = 100 lines of chat
It says 12:29pm
Bob
Bob
@Rahul2001 it is most definitely not rolled back yet
heck, I'd do it if I remembered my wiki password
@Bob Oh, I see. But if I roll back to before the 29th Nov thing, that edit will be lost, whatever it is. Is that ok?
@Bob I assumed that it was just trashed
13:52
Looks like it was {{reflist|2}} -> {{Reflist|30em}}. Is that right?
So I could just fix that manually?
I'm off to dinner. If someone else wants to roll back, feel free. I think the edit of 1st Nov is ok.
That was my great-grandfather, btw.
Cool stuff
It's rather sketchy, but I don't really have good sources to improve it.
Bob
Bob
@FaheemMitha You could probably do that, yea. Just rollback w/ rollback comment ("reverting vandalism"), and redo the edit with a comment explaining that it's redoing {name}'s edit post-vandalism-rollback
And my knowledge of Wikipedia could be put on a postage stamp.
Bob
Bob
something like that *shrug*
I don't think anyone would complain if you did
13:54
@Bob Lol I used to have that problem all the time, till I saved my password in my browser
Bob
Bob
worst case you have to explain why
Now it keeps you logged in for a year anyway
@FaheemMitha maybe you should write a wiki page for it.... ;)
@Bob Ok, I'm off to dinner. If nobody has taken care of it, I'll deal with it when I get back.
@Burgi Huh?
bad joke
13:55
Ah
> The edit could not be undone due to conflicting intermediate edits; if you wish to undo the change, it must be done manually.
@Annaduh Is that a message you got when you tried to roll back?
Done reverting it back.
Bob
Bob
oh apparently rollback rights are special and otherwise you need to manually edit it back o.O
could've sworn I had a fancy button to press... but that was 5 years ago
@jokerdino Ah, you took care of it! Thanks a lot.
Well, dinner time. Later, folks.
13:58
Cya
Bob
Bob
oh, I was thinking of undo, not rollback... bleh
@Bob Yes, the Undo button
Apparently there's some advanced magic you can do using it and diffs, but I don't know much about those
i've never edited wikipedia
You've never lived
I only edited Ask Ubuntu page on Wikipedia and couple typos.
@jokerdino I edited my ex-school's page. It's too promotional.
Bob
Bob
floof
@Burgi THAT IS NOT OKAY OMGOMGOMG
@Burgi That's blackmirroresque creepy.
14:17
Well I suppose even if it hasn't heated the room, four hours of burn testing at 50% over TDP proves my overclock is stable, at least.
14:33
Please flag as abusive superuser.com/q/1153526/337631
Never mind. It's gone
@Burgi interesting idea
@DavidPostill i wonder who did that. I did nuke the user tho
@JourneymanGeek Even without the profanity it was a very poor question ...
@DavidPostill that might have been the point of it tho
flag-hammered pretty darned quick
@JourneymanGeek Yeah, smokey caught it. 4 flags from smokey users
14:43
I still handle these the old fashioned way ;)
