But in a website the db password can be a hideously long string

Having one db user per website user is crazy for a public site. Mapping website users to db privilege levels at the webserver won't be made significantly more secure by using one db user per level (keeping in mind that coding errors can happen at the db side just as much as they could in the app)

It also introduces rather right coupling between the db and webapp

the whole spiel about the 1080 is that finally a single GPU ASIC can smoothly do 4K at high frame rates (60+, depending on the game) with very high detail effects

the 980 can play games at 4K too of course, but get ready for some frame drops

@JourneymanGeek yeah well if the hardware in the 660 supported 4K video decoding, you'd probably be fine... or leap forward in time and decode the 4K video in software with a modern CPU

I doubt Sandy Bridge or Nehalem could decode 4k@30fps H264 or H265 in software and keep up with it

Okay. So after napping a bit, DisplayCAL has profiled and calibrated the main laptop display and it seems to look a lot better. No weird distortion, just slightly warmer than original colors (which is what it should be). Guess software is to blame after all...

So the problem is the calibration software, not the display. Average delta E dropped to less than 0.5 on the laptop display after calibration.

So the colorimeter is fantastic but the supplied software is utter crap. DisplayCAL is producing far better results with none of the distortion I got with the ColorMunki software, though it takes much longer to calibrate with DisplayCAL.

So I finally decided to do the Windows 10 upgrade on my Win8.1 laptop

I used the GWX thing that they were pushing so hard, and it took me to Windows Update, so I waited for a really long time while it downloaded the stuff

Then it opened a new window with a spinning not-actually-progress bar. That lasted for several hours and then was just sitting there doing literally nothing (no activity of any kind)

I gave up, rebooted the machine, and tried with a DVD. That did stuff for a while, then exited and said "Something happened - Windows 10 installation has failed."

Duplicating a hard drive without Sysprepping leaves the machines with the same Windows Update ID, which can cause bizarre problems, especially if you use WSUS

Examining the setuperr.log file, the Candy Crush app for Windows 10 was installed but not technically provisioned, so Sysprep was very confused

Turns out the external IPS display has a much narrower gamut (probably due to a lower-quality LED backlight). Sager wasn't joking when the claimed the laptop's panel covered 95% of the NTSC gamut; the colorimeter proves it.

I noticed a pattern with Excel and Google Sheets questions that sample data is often presented in non-optimal ways.
