12:00 AM
@DavidPostill @qasdfdsaq funny thing is tho, we encourage it by helping. Which of course, the natural thing we do
In theory I could add it to the channel topic ala the comms room
buuuuut

Urgh. It's taken me over 12 hours to launch this stupid space station

I don't want to totally discourage that sorta thing
but I'd rather people didn't just pop in just for tech supportish questions

@JourneymanGeek I tried politely to discourage it ;)
3 hours ago, by DavidPostill
@Seth That's not your question. Why don't you ask your own?

then we go help anyway ;p
but that's the troubleshooty sort of thing
and the issue was something a little more fundamental

Fundamental?

12:13 AM
and well, do we want to stick a "no live support" message on the channel topic and enforce it?

"No live support without pictures of cute kittens, foxes, or naked women"

Well, looks like he didn't realise that USB headphones contain their own soundcard and you had to set a default device. Something that would get unset on reinstall.....
@qasdfdsaq stop angling to talk to the CM you have a crush on....

WTF?
I don't have no crush on nobody

Moving on....
;p

Woof.

12:16 AM
I think using chat as a sounding board is fine
We do vaguely discourage troubleshooting questions

A lot of questions are better dealt with via chat than, say, the classic Q&A format

that said, it should ideally lead to a question on the main site or be a terribad fit

Though it'd be interesting to see what'd happen if we said "Live support only if you write up a proper Q&A afterwards"

I like that idea. Otherwise our time is "wasted". Having a real Q&A afterwards makes it useful for future visitors to SU
assuming it would be on-topic of course ...

12:19 AM
Sometimes it's fun just to figure something out so we can say "Haha we solved something that <insert other SE site/chat> couldn't, we're so much better than them!"

We actually do that sometimes.
Also means someone gets a quick answer.

We have to be careful with that otherwise anyone who thinks they get a quick answer here will dump their 'urgent' questions ...

I mean the person who solves it gets to post an answer quick ;p
@Seth something basic - what's your default playback and recording devices?

But how will we "enforce" the followup posting of a Q&A?

We don't
honour system really

12:22 AM
Well, at least after 12 hours optimising and re-launching my space station I've managed to triple the framerate

Name and shame? ;)

Blackmail them: We'll post revenge porn Q&A of you if you don''t.

But we have someone who was made quite unwelcome for being a help vampire.

(We'll email your dumb work-related question to your boss to show him how incompetent you are)

Woof

The stupid driver refuses to die

@JourneymanGeek Everyone's out busy hunting for valentines

hacks it off with a axe

12:25 PM
Bleh it's as bad as before
and equlaizer APO doesn't work
fack you windows

@HackToHell who is that?

I don't think manish is an AU mod

I don't think so either.

@jokerdino o0 then he's on that math place
I remember chatting with him

He was Physics.SE and Chem.SE mod.
Not sure now.

12:37 PM
aha

1 hour later…
1:50 PM
whoot

?

I have the torrent client on my fedora box sending notifications over growl when a download is complete

So your box is growling at you?
Wow.
I'll put that next to the diet water and the diet oil.

2:36 PM
hax!

2:46 PM
@Hennes pretty much
0
A: How do I get growl for windows to use native windows 8/10 notifications?

Journeyman GeekIts terribly hacky and there's three different things I need to pull in. Firstly I need a way to actually generate the new style notifications. I'm using toaster for this, download and unzip this somewhere appropriate. Next you need something to glue toaster and growl together - I used scripty ...

3:08 PM
not quite perfect
it throws up a cmd screen - its a scripty issue

Bob
@JourneymanGeek Eww

Bob
Why are you @echo off twice? That's completely redundant -_-

I fixed that on my own copy

Bob
@JourneymanGeek Also, the way you process args... :S

3:12 PM
I suppose if there was a way to pass on the parameters directly
;p
yeaaaah
I have no idea what I'm doing ;p

Bob
IIRC cmd can only go up to 9 before needing to shift. But shifting three times to get to arg 7?!

nope
shifting 3 times to get to arg 10
and there was vaguely a reason for that, but I forget

Bob
@JourneymanGeek nono, I maen you shift three times - why not shift once and access 9?

Bob
ugh. I'd just go with powershell for this

3:13 PM
;p
dosen't solve the need for a batch file ._.

Bob
@JourneymanGeek Launch a PS script instead.

In a perfect world I'd just be able to feed the two arguements to the app creating the toasts

Bob
Or write a proper program.

hm, gonna write a script to hook into whatsapp web and download images/chats

3:14 PM
And possibly send stuff

Bob
If it's a graphics-mode program you can avoid the console window popup.

(my original idea was to use xmpp)
@Bob it is.

Feels like the time I was trying(unsuccessfully) to hook into chat.se :D

Bob
@JourneymanGeek I meant the program you execute.

3:15 PM
Hopefully I succeed this time :D

@Bob there's an alternate graphics mode program I could use

Bob
@JourneymanGeek I'm confused now.

Hm, it uses facebook's react.js

@Bob The issue is that I'm using batch to fire up toaster. Theres's another toast notification app that pretends to be gui based

Bob
@JourneymanGeek Yes, I know what the issue is.
That's why I suggested using PS or writing a proper graphics-mode program.

Bob
It's a fairly trivial programming exercise :P

for certain values of trivial, I suppose ;p
I'll give a poke at it tommorrow

Bob
using System;
using System.Diagnostics;

class Program
{
	static void Main(string[] args)
	{
		if (args.Length < 10)
		{
			return;
		}
		string tArg = args[1];
		string mArg = args[9];

		Process.Start(@"C:\path\to\toast.exe", String.Format("-t {0} -m {1} -w", tArg, mArg));
	}
}
@JourneymanGeek ^ trivial C# program

._.
I THINK I might have a compiler on the other box.

Bob
Not tested at all so it might not even compile :P
@JourneymanGeek You have one on just about every Windows box.

3:24 PM
I'd need to test it tommorrow tho, the main system is off for the night.
@Bob really?
(shows how little I know)

Bob
%windir%\Microsoft.NET\Framework64\v4.0.30319\csc.exe /t:winexe Program.cs
/t:winexe tells it to build a graphics-mode program
only real effect is hiding the console window and not attaching a console by default

bleh ff debugger doesn't show websockets as a type

which would be handy
saved a bookmark. Will see if I can beat it into working tommorrow

Bob
@JourneymanGeek Let me know if it doesn't work. I might actually bother testing it :P
Was completely written off the top of my head.

@Bob uhm page doesn't have anything about websockets o0

3:27 PM
;p

so does ff dev edition have that option ?

Your face is a websocket

Bob
@HackToHell Whoops, wrong link. hacks.mozilla.org/2015/11/…

@qasdfdsaq what are you, 12? ;p

Bob
That's in 44 release by now too

3:28 PM
(try not to say yes ;p)

No, but I will be tomorrow

@Bob cool !
I think I can read data directly off web sockets then
*plausbily
They use secure websockets hmm

(13 is the minimum age for SE in general)

Starts ff dev edition download

3:29 PM
13 then

Bob
@JourneymanGeek It basically ends up as a google exercise for "how do I read args" and "how do I launch programs"

Either way it's my birthday tomorrow. And I will be... 13 if that's what you insist

Bob
1 min ago, by Bob
That's in 44 release by now too

@Bob in a language I don't know ;p

Bob
@qasdfdsaq Well, then. An early happy birthday, since I'd probably forget within the hour.
I forget my own birthday.

3:30 PM
Hah, I nearly forgot mine too.

@Bob And yep I missed that

I share the same birthday with my flatmate though, and I overheard him making plans on the phone.

Bob
@JourneymanGeek Yea, but you don't seem adverse to copy-pasting/beat-it-till-it-works coding :P
At least judging by the batch script

;p
More beat it till it works in this case

Or snarl at it like a dog

3:32 PM
grab it by the ankles and shake coding?

Bob
@JourneymanGeek That's more-or-less what I end up doing with unfamiliar languages anyway.
Most reasonable languages make some kind of sense when you just look at them.
Esoteric/golfing languages being the main exception.

what the hell is a golfing language

@qasdfdsaq languages designed for minimal size and readability

3:35 PM
Heh
I see

Bob
Basically: do the task in the minimal amount of characters possible, to hell with readability and execution speed.

Can't you do that just by putting any language in a self-extracting ZIP file

Bob
@qasdfdsaq Not really...

I want to do this tutorial, but I am afraid I will break something... db.fyi/dual-boot-ubuntu-fedora-windows-10

wat.
They're not even ... what...

I know, but the tutorial itself looks good

I want to install ubuntu as a dual boot with Windows 10

Bob
4:39 PM
:D

Anonymous
Do you guys have a better tutorial?

Bob
@onebree It's ... so-so. In that it kinda brute-forces its way into working but I get the sneaking suspicion that the author really has no idea what they're doing.

Anonymous
Then what is a better tutorial in doing it?

Bob
shrug where we're going, we don't need tutorials!
sorry, I just had to say that

Grr. Bloody win10 10. If you want a device driver then tell me which one.

4:41 PM
I cannot stand my xubuntu VM losing network connectivity every few minutes anymore... I mean, I cannot even get system updates becayse ut says there are network errors, even though I am posting here

Bob
in all seriousness, though - what do you currently have installed?

Anonymous
Win10 home 64 as host, xubuntu 15 64 as guest on virtualbox

Anonymous
it is seriously impeding on my workflow... I cannot use slack without it disconnecting and killing my internet connection on my guest

Bob
@onebree really, there are a couple ways to do this
traditionally, you'd set up GRUB as the primary bootloader and chainload into bootmgr for Windows

Anonymous
The last time I dual booted was 2012 and watched someone do it

Bob
4:44 PM
with UEFI now, you have the option of using the firmware boot manager to pick which OS you want to boot from
this is the new 'standard' way of doing things and has the advantage of not breaking your system if you ever remove GRUB

Anonymous
do either work with win10 now>? I know win10 had grub issues when it first came out

Bob
it has the disadvantage of being less configurable, which might be a problem if your firmware provides a crappy boot manager

Anonymous
this is a lot to take in... I will do this when I am off Monday

Anonymous
is there a guide for me to follow?

Bob
most tutorials still tend to prefer the first approach, probably because that's what they're used to

Anonymous
4:46 PM
what do you prefer bob? Which is safer for my windows OS (which has all my files and things... and is a paid OS)

Bob
@onebree well, three general methods that deal with what the boot manager (the thing that lets you pick the OS) is: the UEFI firmware, the Windows loader or GRUB (linux loader).
GRUB seems to be preferred by most tutorials.

Anonymous
!!wiki uefi

Bob
pure UEFI/firmware minimises dependencies between OSes

Anonymous
oh wait... this isn't SO chat :P

@JourneymanGeek I checked that :) I got it fixed now, I had to completely remove the headset from my device manager, uninstall the software, restart the PC & then install an older version of it. (Logitech apparently patched it a tiny tad too much)

Bob
4:49 PM
@onebree we do have a bot but he's been down for a week :(

Anonymous
Tell me more about UEFI

Bob
Windows bootloader first is the opposite of GRUB first but reduces risk of breaking Windows

@qasdfdsaq You there?

Bob
I've seen so many people do the GRUB-first dual-boot then find out they can no longer boot Windows after removing Linux :\
@onebree This is the best explanation I've seen, but it's rather involved: happyassassin.net/2014/01/25/…

Anonymous
@Bob I think that was part of the issues with the win10 upgrade

Anonymous
4:51 PM
So I would first boot to windows, but then boot to grub?

Bob
@onebree As I said, pure UEFI/firmware as the boot manager keeps the OSes as independent as possible - you have little to no risk of upgrades breaking things unless they nuke a partition
@onebree That's one option.

Anonymous
Okay. Can the OS's still comunicate with shared folders? (Only interested in Linux seeing Windows folders)

Bob
Either BOOTMGR (Windows) or GRUB first would mean the second OS depends on the first one (or at least its bootloader) working.

Anonymous
@Bob btw thank you for the help so much

Bob
pure UEFI means neither bootloader depends on each other

4:52 PM
@Seth Yup

Anonymous
Okay I will go with UEFI method then... Just need to research how to do that

You fixed it?

Bob
@onebree You can always mount the Windows partition (caveat: risk of damaging partition or security settings or .... also won't work if Windows is hibernated)
safer would be to create a dedicated partition for shared files, but that's not necessary. depends on how much you trust ntfs-3g

Anonymous
Second set of Qs: What flavor of Ubuntu is the best? I last used Ubuntu Unity on version 10, and it was horrible. I am used to Gnome 3 on CentOS at work. I am OKAY with Xubuntu, but it feels a little light. (I chose light because it is a VM.)

Bob
@onebree I personally like Kubuntu, as a Windows user.
Lubuntu would be my second choice.

Anonymous
4:54 PM
Is kubuntu plasma 5?

Bob
You can always chuck GNOME 3 on Ubuntu proper though.
@onebree Yea.

Anonymous
There is already a gnome ubuntu flavor/

Anonymous
YES I want plasma 5 so bad... I do not like kde4.

Anonymous
Great great great.... Do you have a link on how to do the UEFI thing?

Bob
4:56 PM
@onebree The happyassassin link earlier is a useful general primer.
Unfortunately ... there's a bit of a roadblock here.
Your Win10 install has to be UEFI/GPT already.
If it isn't, you're basically stuck with one of the other methods.

Anonymous
How do I find that stuff out?

Anonymous
die, Clippy, die!

Bob
@onebree you can check if the disk is GPT-partitioned in the Windows disk management tool.

Is clippy just in our channel or all of SE chat channels?

Anonymous
Just this one.

Bob
4:59 PM
@qasdfdsaq It's a RA-specific easter egg.
Some other rooms have their own eggs.
@onebree Here's a pretty well-written guide, but it does assume Ubuntu-first: askubuntu.com/questions/666631/…

Anonymous
Okay, I am in the disk management tool.
