Q: Tech Challenge: Audio over HDMI on XP

user504383For anyone that thinks they are technically smart enough to make AUDIO functional over HDMI on WinXP, see the CHALLENGE at http://www.minieriassociates.com/HDMI/HDMI_Audio_XP_issue.pdf

Probably spam.

Naw. Just clueless. Amusingly the contents of the PDF would be a decent question.

Seemed like a good way to get people to open your infected pdf file...

Mine isn't turning on

I want to download an old JDK so of course I need an oracle account

It might still be broken, only less so

It's brand new Corasir VS650

Yeah PSUs generally don't power up without the sense cable being at ground

OK.
My only problem is that I'm unable to find a 700watt UPS

Unreliable local power?

Yeah

9:13 AM
@Bob Which JDK are you after? You can download old versions from oracle.com/technetwork/java/javase/archive-139210.html

Bob
@DavidPostill You'd think so, but it eventually ends up on a page requesting login.
I just grabbed a random account off bugmenot
because the whole thing is entirely stupid

Oh. I didn't think you needed a login for old versions. How stupid.

The comment on the (now deleted) answer suggested that the user was trying to ask a new question, but this wasn't the case.
(Oddly enough, I got the same audit twice.)

I'm not sure the comment is valid there

It looks like a good audit to me. The comment is wrong but the answer is complete rubbish. "right-clicking the folder on your hard drive, choosing properties and selecting the location tab" - there is no properties location tab (unless Windows 10 added one...). Even if there was it would be unlikely to solve the problem ...
@DragonLord You should have pressed "skip" ;)

Bob
@DavidPostill Hm. That's not a good thing to generalise.
Thing is, the properties dialog is extensible.
e.g. I have Acronis adding a tab.
I wouldn't be surprised if the Xbox app did something similar.
I would hesitate to call out an answer as wrong, unless I know it's wrong.
At most I might ask if they're sure.
As it turns out, there is a location tab, even on standard Win7.
And it's actually added specifically for those special folders.
So the only "problem" with that answer is that it largely duplicates another existing one (which the review doesn't show). Poor audit.
In fact, it actually provides some more info on how to achieve what the other answer advises. So it's not an exact duplicate and not entirely terrible.
I'd say this is partially a poor audit and partially because the answer probably should not have been deleted in the first place. At least not straight off the bat - e.g. if the author was advised to improve the answer further (screenshots? etc.).

12:34 PM
Lol. A good chunk of my current reviews are skips.

Bob
In an ideal world, everyone would edit the existing answer when the new one is somewhat similar. In the real world, rep and name provides incentive to answer, and I'd personally prefer a better answer over nothing at all.
@Sathya ^ above

@Bob One of my biggest pet peeves with audits is that they hide information needed to properly assess the post. While I understand the underlying idea (posts should be judged on content and content alone), the user's own history (reputation is spoofed or hidden in an audit) and the presence of other answers (the number of other answers is listed as zero in an audit) are relevant context that should not be hidden in an audit.
For example, a spam answer from a 1-reputation or deleted answer is pretty obviously spam. However, the same content from an established user requires more careful handling and should not be blindly flagged.
Looks like it was added in this feature request:
16
Q: Do not display the posting time/user card in review; it makes audits easily detectable

ben is uǝq backwardsWhen getting audited in the review queues, it's often extremely obvious. If the date that a question or answer was posted is more than 20-25 minutes ago it's not going to be a new First Post or Late Answer. This enables the wily user to be extra careful when reviewing these posts and pass audits...

I'm not sure if this is a good idea. This strips the post of its context, which can make it difficult to accurately assess the post without having to click through to view the actual post (dramatically slowing down the review workflow). In some cases, this can actually make audits more readily apparent. It actually makes the job a bit harder for us legitimate reviewers. — DragonLord the Fiery 2 mins ago
They'd have to click on every question and open it in a new tab, which would be unbelievably tedious: This is not a great idea. This disrupts the review workflow for legitimate reviewers. The interface is designed to provide most of the information necessary to review the post with a reasonable level of certainty. The link is only there if further assessment is necessary; expecting users to do this with every post is inconsistent with the design of the review system. — DragonLord the Fiery 29 secs ago

12:51 PM
@bob Fair enough, but it's still a very poor answer.

the reputation of the poster shouldn't really be a factor in the outcome of a review: I'm not sure if I'd agree with this. Reviewing posts accurately requires context beyond the content of the post. The user's reputation and the presence of other answers are relevant context. For example, a post containing a link to a spam site by a new or deleted user likely needs to be flagged. However, a similar post from an established user requires more care as the user is less likely to be acting in bad faith. In such cases, It may be better to leave a comment or edit the post rather than to flag it. — DragonLord the Fiery 8 secs ago
#Oracle probably will never implement check constraints in #MySQL because it would cannibalize #OracleDatabase http://bugs.mysql.com/bug.php?id=3464

damnit! I took the case off my iPhone last night to clean the phone and case, then forgot to put it back on and got busy and left the case in my desk... then dropped the phone when taking it out of my cargo pocket on the way into the office this morning, with an umbrella in one hand, and coffee and lunch box in my arms >_<
I scratched the corner of the aluminum case, but thank god, none of the functional parts are damaged... everything is 100% working... it's a cosmetically damaged but fully functional phone
contemplating whether to blow one of my two accidental damage protection claims on it via AppleCare+
or just to save both of them until I damage something functional about it
resale value would be higher without the damage, should probably get it done

Bob
4:42 PM
@allquixotic Save it till said protection is about to expire?
You're lucky it didn't smash the screen.
...and rather unlucky with everything else that happened

@Bob yeah. it fell from about pocket-height onto asphalt, hit hard on the top-right corner (more toward the back of the phone than the front), left a deep scratch there, bounced, then landed on its back a few centimeters from a shallow puddle in the parking lot from the rain that would've been deep enough to submerge some of the ports.
it got "wet" but only from impact on the wet surface and a few raindrops on the screen; it didn't get submerged in the puddle thankfully
not wet enough to damage it
grabbed it almost immediately when it landed

Bob
@allquixotic Speaking of which, even though the G4 isn't rated water-resistant someone tested with it under shallow water, and it survived a 2hr immersion o.o

nice

Bob
That's with water entering the cover.
Clean water, though. Dirty water would probably be bad.
Moto X Style is rated IP52.

I have heard that the screen of an iPhone (even latest model) is pretty damn easy to break/damage, but the aluminum chassis is basically as strong as a case, except for the fact that you could get unlucky enough without a case that it lands on the camera protruding from the back, which could break the camera
and it's much cheaper to replace a damaged case than a damaged phone

Bob
4:50 PM
@allquixotic Still a corner-camera, right?

@Bob yeah
the scrapes are on the same corner as the camera, so I was kinda worried, but I think the camera is ok
it's tinting everything yellow in the background whenever I have one of my PC screens in the picture (mostly white light), but I took a picture of my keyboard and it looks fine

Bob
@allquixotic At least iPhones have good resale value :P
Pondering selling my S4 later... ~$200
Paid ~$500 1.5 yrs ago.

not sure if the yellow tint is due to camera damage or just a bug in the camera

Bob
@allquixotic Sounds normal.
Computer screens are usually calibrated a bit on the blue side.
Auto white balance tries to make that look white.
Everything else will look less blue (i.e. yellowish)

ahh, thanks for that

@DragonLord Nope, Windows 7. This was my work computer. Happens on occasion in Windows in general though.

I need extra space to write to someone. Can I do a temporary answer?

@Clearquestionwithexamples You can set up a private chat with them I think. I've not initiated this myself, though.

Yea. I need a bunch of code formatting though

Chat + pastebin :)
Why can't it be a regular answer?

@Clearquestionwithexamples stackedit.io ?

Yea pastebin I guess. Thank you
Oh stackedit ok

@Mokubai Oh that's neat, never saw this before.

@BenRichards It's a bit like Rule #34, but applies to tech stuff as well. If you can think of something useful on the internet then chances are someone's done it already.
!!xkcd rule 34

I know of Rule 34. :P

6:58 PM
I love the scroll wheel on this mouse. Logitech are, IMHO, the best at making mice.

Oh hey, dragging on Windows 7 is broken again! Restarting explorer.exe...

7:16 PM
Another batch of juicy flags!

7:37 PM
Hi again, still there Ben?

And the dragging broke again... started looking around because it's ridiculous that it would keep doing that. Someone mentioned a stuck Esc key. I have TightVNC open and it sometimes confuses Windows where it doesn't detect a KEYUP event... tapped Esc key, can drag again.
So weird!
@xCare Me? What's up?

@Ben, yes, you have experience in Windows boot issues?
how does one reply to messages?

@xCare A little bit, but haven't really had to mess with it too recently.
You hover mouse over the message, click the down arrow, and then click reply.

thanks. Do you know anyone here expert with Data recovery/MBR/Boot issues? I am tackling a rather complex issue:
1
Q: Recovering files when Windows 7 MBR has been corrupted

xCareSystem Stats: Type: 64-Bit Desktop; OS: Windows 7 Premium; HD: Seagate Barracuda 750GB, S.M.A.R.T. Enabled. History: There is the complex situation I'm dealing with, I'll do my best to break it down: I've been up against some nasty guys in the gaming field and a few days ago, security soft...

@xCare If it's just your MBR that's corrupted, then you should be able to restore it without losing data. Though I hope you have backups, just in case! I'm sure someone on here knows though.
I'm at work though and can't really spend the time to troubleshoot your issue.
Sorry. Though last time I had MBR issues, the Windows installation disk does have recovery tools to rebuild it and presuming things aren't too screwed up, it shouldn't affect your files.

7:42 PM
yes, I am thinking so, but don't want to make any false moves. That's fine, I can wait. Can you suggest a better time perhaps when you or someone here might be available?

/me pewers at the review queue. Down 2000 items to 4444

I don't know about others. Since this is a community, people kind of have their own schedules. I might be able to take a look later tonight after I'm done at work.
For now, I upvoted the question. :)
I would be surprised if you didn't have any decent help before then, though.

@Hennes I've done my part.

okay thanks, around how many hours from now approx?

For me, 3-4.

@DragonLord 1205 to catching up with me ;p
10 flags to go.

Are you a admin DragonLord?

No, not a mod.
Moderators are denoted by a ♦ after the username and have usernames listed in blue in chat.

I see, I'm new myself, getting acquainted with the place still.

Welcome!

Bob
7:55 PM
@xCare Ok, time for a quick overview of SE moderation! :D
At the top, we have "The Team". That's StackExchange/StackOverflow employees. They're technically in charge.
It's usually the "Community Managers" who interact with the users, but that's not a rule.

As you gain reputation points, you unlock increasingly advanced tools to help moderate this site. The most advanced users (including me and @Bob) have access to fairly powerful toolsets that can be used to quickly identify and weed out bad content.

Bob
Below them, there's the site-specific "Diamond Moderators" or "Elected Moderators".

However, certain actions are reserved for true community moderators.

Bob
Those are voted in on a site-by-site basis during periodic elections.
And then you have the normal user, who has certain moderation privileges based on reputation.

The Stack Exchange engine is designed to offload as much moderation work as possible to the community, leaving only exceptional conditions to moderators.

7:58 PM
@Bob I read that as "Damned moderators" XD

Flags are used to bring these conditions to moderator attention.

Bob
@DragonLord More than that, for the most part the community makes the decisions
The meta sites like Meta Super User are where rules are defined; they're usually voted in.

Thank you @Ben! Glad to be here.

Bob
Diamond Moderators have some leeway in how rules are enforced, but for the most part they don't make the rules; the community as a whole does.
That said, The Team can hand down arbitrary rules, since they basically own the place.

Ok, thank you Bob, DragonLo, appreciate the basic introduction.

Bob
8:00 PM
Chat is a bit different. If you're a Diamond Moderator on any site, you're a mod on all chat rooms and you'll have a blue name. If you're a room owner, your name is in italics and you have limited permissions on just that room. Reputation points mean little on chat.
And... yea, that's about it.

@xCare are you on a limited-width screen? Usernames can get truncated on a smaller screen in chat.

Bob
Biggest difference from a traditional forum is the users have a lot more power.

@DragonLo, I am on a widescreen atm so I can see names fine, but good to know.

8:14 PM
@xCare When it shows the username above as you're typing it, just hit tab and it'll autocomplete it for you.
When you mention someone in chat, it'll give them a notification in their inbox.

@BenRichards got it, ty for the tip!

No prob!

8:30 PM
Exactly! I get blue everywhere in chat :P

A: In Prime 95, why do small FFTs generate the most heat, despite CPU at 100% for all options

DragonLordVectorized code, especially AVX, naturally increases CPU heat output because more of the processor must be used at a time to quickly produce a result. Small FFTs demand less memory than the blend mode, so the processor spends more time processing data and less time waiting for data. The x86-64 ...

A: What is the correct way to plug DNS leaks when running OpenVPN?

xCareSo far, the best automatic way I've found for uncovering if there's a DNS leak is by going to: https://www.dnsleaktest.com/ To fix a DNS leak, simply download and install their free DNS Fix tool to the VPN's folder. The tool as well as instructions how to manually fix a leak correctly can be ...

Vector code basically performs operations on multiple data items at a time. It's only natural that this results in more of the silicon working at once, producing much more heat than is normal especially in the absence of memory stalls.
@xCare +1, but can read a bit spammy. Summarizing the linked content is a good idea here; we want answers to stand alone as much as possible.

@DragonLord yes, I could tell it was tacky perhaps, hence my reluctance.. others might view it as an advert, but it's the best answer I know that answers what those people in there seem to be asking. I'll work on it a bit more.

A: What is the correct way to plug DNS leaks when running OpenVPN?

xCareA VPN is great for encrypting data, however 2 of its other main functions is assuming another IP address and changing nationality to access location-restricted content. It functions because the VPN allows you to select an alternate exit server, where it pretends you're actually located by routing...

@allquixotic Think Final Fantasy X-2 and XIII-2.

@DragonLord I don't follow that franchise, so that doesn't make it any clearer

FF is strange in that its a thematic franchise
and specific installments are well loved enough to warrant sequels or movies
