12:12 AM
Gotta merge changes in the new php.ini to the running file.
Doing it by hand in Notepad++.
Changes merged.

12:35 AM
Removing any extraneous packages and cleaning up.

Bob
> Your delivery from Dispatch is
in transit
> Your shipment from Dispatch is
due for delivery today
actually received it an hour ago, but ok. keep sending me delayed emails, sure.
(no, it's not the phone. that one still hasn't been shipped yet. typhoon and all :\)

@Bob I got an email today saying my package had been delivered... Checked my front door and it was sitting there! :D

Bob
@MichaelFrank this delivery requiring signature (supposedly) was left at the door with doorbell rung
got there ~5 secs later with no sign of delivery person
must've booked it pretty fast
@allquixotic @BenRichards It's an Xperia E1 running Android 4.4.2 on a Snapdragon 200. No aptX (I don't have an aptX sink anyway) but @allquixotic says this is an issue with SBC anyway. I can probably try measuring clock speeds - which app did you use?
I still intend to test the G4 when it arrives.
Sept 22nd comment on the bugtracker thread:
> Seems like the problem is in the kernel itself. Using Kernel Adiutor (g.play) i changed cpu governor from interactive to performance. It eats up battery a little bit faster, but so far im listening music already 4th sessions (5-6h) without single skip. Its a record since i can remember. Im running LG G4 rooted, stock rom 10E.
So I guess that saves me from needing to test :S
Hm. 10E is a bit old, EU is on 10F (SEA 10C, which I'll be getting).
Apparently that includes touchscreen and Stagefright fixes.
Hopefully something BT too?
> Your shipment from Dispatch
has been delivered
Yea kinda figured that out already :P

12:51 AM
@allquixotic Yeah. Power is getting more and more concentrated than ever in fewer people.
Image update completed.
The temporary instance has been deleted.

Bob
1:06 AM
@allquixotic 3h 30m (7:30-11:00) streaming Spotify to BT speaker with no other usage dropped 22% (100%-78%).
But it seems that the battery measurement is poorly calibrated, since the first and last 10% drops faster than the rest. Bit of a curve in the graph.
That's the S4 with ~1.5yr old battery.

Linode has this Images feature that lets you keep your own images. These images can be deployed just like the stock images Linode provides.

Bob
And running 4.3.

The image I have contains a simplified version of my production configuration and includes the essential packages needed for a simple Web server.
This allows me to quickly and easily deploy another instance if some project requires it.

Performance Monitor: So PhysicalDisk\Disk Transfers/sec is your IOPS count?
I've added that to my disk load monitor MMC console (main disk only).

3:24 AM
I'm learning to use GNU Screen to maximize my productivity on my server's console. Any tips?

Bob
-S name to name a screen
^A^D to detach, ^A^Esc to go into copy mode
that's about all I know (or need to know)
-r name to reattach, chuck a -d in there if it's not detached

my favorite screen command is ^A^D, by far :D
screen -mdS blah some-command the list of arguments ...
screen -rS blah
then ^A^D

I guess I'm going to print the manual.

there's also a hotkey to scroll in the buffer but I forgot it

Bob
3:51 AM
@allquixotic I jump into copy mode to scroll

4:36 AM
> Your termcap does not specify how to change the terminal's width to 132.
echo $TERMCAP returns nothing.
How do I fix this?
echo $TERM returns xterm-256color.
I can set height but not width.
Okay, now I can't even set height at all.

Bob
4:54 AM
...
video tutorials
ugh
I can follow text instructions in a fraction of the time it takes to watch someone ramble through a video

5:11 AM
lol
quite

video tutorials of what?
I enjoy the railstutorials.org vids

Bob
@allquixotic <random task>

not very rambly, and much easier than reading a lot

Bob
in this case, getting CS:S textures onto gmod

but I'm trying to learn a subject comprehensively, not solve a specific task.

Bob
5:20 AM
I'd rather read instructions

when I'm trying to solve a specific task I prefer text

Bob
It's basically "download this stuff and extract into that directory"
literally, that's it
...someone managed to make a 12 min video out of it

I hate seeing youtube results as the only answer to the problem I'm having

Bob
there's even a bloody annotation at the beginning saying to skip to ~3 mins in for the start of the instructions (?!?!)
@allquixotic very different

more merciful video authors will at least post the full instructions in the video description as plain text
I've had to go to youtube for solutions to problems before, and maybe 40% of the time I can just pause the video and read the text

5:24 AM
yup
The best is when its a video of a purely non interactive texty sort of tool

@DavidPostill I see. Batteries is something I don't deem necessary to worry about. There is abundance of them. I heard there is M570 version with red trackball which I suppose was discontinued. This one has better quality control and better trackball too I heard.

7:55 AM
@Boris_yo I currently have ones with a blue ball. I can't remember it being any better to use than the old type with the red ball.

8:33 AM
Last night I put a large-ish Wolf spider (?) outside. This morning I went out and there was a web across the entire span of the entrance to my driveway.
I think war were declared.

9:12 AM
@Bob So far so good. I've made the loop break at Section 10 so it doesn't double up on some info that is listed again at the bottom. I've tried to understand that loop a bit better but it's still the bit that baffles me the most, haha. I also had a bit of a problem with products that had an 'odourless' odour but I managed to regex my way out of that in the end. :)

Bob
@marcusdoesstuff Could always filter in a smarter way
But it's a bit more complex

I settled on adding a '(?!less)' on the end.
I tried to get it to just find 'Odour' when followed by two or more commas but that seemed quite buggy.
regex can get ugly huh? :D

9:36 AM

Bob
@marcusdoesstuff Odour[,]{2},*
Or Odour,,+ :P

9:52 AM
@Bob Neither of those work
They put 'Odour,,,,,' in the results and the number of commas varies csv to csv. I did something very similar myself at first.
I thought something like '(Odour)[,,+]' would work but for some reason it still leaves one comma on the end of Odour!
I think I'd tried something like '(Odour)[,{2,}]' first, before I started doing negative lookaheads.
@JourneymanGeek Haha, that's great. I usually just smile at XKCDs but that actually got a laugh out of me... Which is actually rather sad.

@marcusdoesstuff: sad thing is how fast we find those.

@JourneymanGeek This was one of the ones I pulled up as I started my project to remind myself to be rational: xkcd.com/1319

you meant pro forma?
@Journ

10:09 AM
!!/xkcd 1319

Bob
@marcusdoesstuff Oh, in the results. Wait what.
Single line?
Single line matcher uses groups to find the key and value

@marcusdoesstuff Use !!/xkcd 1319 to get the chatbot to inline the comic ;)

Does the multiline matcher work differently in some ways... it seemed that way.
Anyway I'm not fiddling with it now... It works! Haha

Bob
@DavidPostill Or just onebox it yourself if you have the link.
If you're gonna use the bot, might as well use it to do the search.

10:10 AM
you guys and your magical formatting

Bob
@marcusdoesstuff It's completely different.
It also takes the whole match for the key name.

I figured as much

Bob
Grouping functionality can be trivially added if you wanted.

I think it should be fine for now but thanks :)

@Clearquestionwithexamples: I'd guess so
@DavidPostill: I tend to onebox it, but change http to https
@DavidPostill: hm. I've never seen that canned comment thing in reviews. Sure its not a userscript?

10:30 AM
@Bob How do I get the bot to search for it then? (I'm just learning the bot ;))

Bob
!!tell 24440757 help xkcd

@DavidPostill xkcd: Returns an XKCD. Call with no args for random, new for latest, or a number for a specific one.

Bob
Hm. Doco is a bit off :P
!!tell 24440757 xkcd try it

Bob
huh.
didn't expect that, but ok :P
It basically grabs the top Google result, IIRC.
I don't have any others in mind right now.

10:31 AM
LOL. Fine if you know what to search for ;)

Bob
!!tell 24440757 xkcd automation

Bob
@DavidPostill Most xkcds you're likely to reference can be identified by a single word :P
And you're more likely to know which word than the specific comic number.

.... I think I found a super cheap trick for spotting (some) review audits....

10:48 AM
What happens when I flag? How does someone make use of it?

A mod takes a look at it

How?
Do you have a feed?

We have something like a review page for those?

Bob
the flags that aren't for mod-attention used to come up in 10k tools too
but they removed that ( :( )when they added the new review queues

The irony of a group of people spending time discussing the most efficient ways to get a bot to display a comic about the perils of automation programming for menial tasks.
:P

11:01 AM
@JourneymanGeek Definately not a script. I get the same "Add a comment for the author" dialog when using IE (where I have no scripts and have never logged in to SE before). Review -> Low Quality Posts > press "Delete" button to repro
@JourneymanGeek Maybe reviewing is different for you being a mod?

could be
There's no way to do non-modovision tho

Bob
@JourneymanGeek aibobot?

@Bob: >_>

Bob
oh, not enough rep

yup
and I need to go abuse my mod powers to work out what email account aibobot is under ;p

Bob
11:04 AM
> visited 1331 days, 1331 consecutive
huh, it's still going

=o0
Aibobot?
That's totally not right

@JourneymanGeek Hmm. I now notice the wording is slight different in IE so something in Firefox is modifying the dialog. Not sure what at the moment. But at least the same dialog (with canned comments of some kind) is displayed.

yeah, I never see that at all
and I'd have noticed! I deleted something like a third of the questions I didn't skip

Snapshot of canned comments dialog from IE (with no user scripting) imgur.com/5YJHPgx

ahh
Oh well
then its something that really should be metaed ;p

Bob
11:18 AM
@JourneymanGeek no, me :P

ahh ok
I haven't logged into aibobot in 2 years ;p

@JourneymanGeek As far as I remember an auto-comment get added first time someone votes. If exactly the same reason is given by another voter then no comment is added. If a different reason is given you get another comment. And of course reviewers can add their own comments (scripted or otherwise) then hit delete and select "no comment".

hm
But these are similar I suppose ;p
but not identical
and I guess one may be an auto comment and one is scripted

Yes they are similar. Just need an AI similarity system to do the checking ;)

lol
or make people aware its happening and be optimistic they will do the right thing
(or have something to point at when they complain)

11:33 AM
Yes. I guess the first one was hand typed. But the second and third are both different from the auto-generated so scripted but the posters have tweaked the script differently.
Now, need to turn my scripts back on ;)

Thanks for the help

You're welcome.

2 hours later…

@bertieb this is why you should always KILL spiders you see; don't simply let them go. they will reward you later with a "surprise" visit in your hair, shoes, etc. or a web you walk through

@allquixotic D: But they kill insects, my sworn mortal enemy... I am conflicts

I will agree that flying insects are even worse than spiders, when they are intent on getting on you and/or biting/stinging you
especially wasps, hornets and mosquitoes

Exactly!

if that wolf spider eats a hornet, maybe you let him have his web

hm. Looks like that job at SE got filled
(and not by me)

1:37 PM
d'oh
no replies from the bosses about your email, but they're very busy, so probably put it on the back burner... I'll physically talk to them today

thanks

if I can get one of them to give me a list of job reqs, I can help you apply

I'm going to start seriously applying for stuff around here on monday.
2 weeks should be enough to decompress and get off my arse ;p

That took me 4 weeks (and somehow I lost 6kg during that time).

lol
I'm not sure which way my weight will go
but at the very least I need to do stuff.

1:51 PM
BMI 29.8 -> 28.8. Still along way to go
(106kg to 100.8 kg, goal is back to 85 kg)

I'm at close to 90
lost a few inches, but not weight at my last job

Bob
@allquixotic Now if Google could stop intentionally gimping YT on WP that'd be greeeeat.
@allquixotic Cor Now? (read with cockney accent)

funny thing is MS does some pretty good apps on android
I'm a huge fan of their lockscreen

2:35 PM
Well, did some sleuthing to determine what was using most of my bandwidth on my website
Turns out my main site (not the blog) had a large, popular image (ranked high in Google searches) that was more than 2MB, disproportionately large for the dimensions of the image.

iOS 9.0.2 already.
Haven't had my phone a week. Two OTAs

I've recompressed it down to 1.22 MB without perceptibly reducing quality. That should bring down bandwidth use.
I've also applied the blog's IP and user agent blacklist to the main site—those visitors will get HTTP 403 when accessing the site.

Bob
@allquixotic LG V10 announcement video includes a bit on the removable battery and MicroSD slot :P
Nooooope not poking at Samsung, of course not! :P
The "groufie" camera is weird
that extra little screen, though? that actually sounds useful
gimmicky at first glance, but it saves a bit of space on the main screen (notification bar) and enables quick app switching (like desktop taskbar)
interesting.

Lesson learned: Don't use crazy JPEG quality settings and use progressive JPEG format to make large images more viewable for users with limited bandwidth.

A low quality duplicate that seems to serve no purpose. Can I flag to close it?

2:56 PM
@Clearquestionwithexamples your link show a page with 50 (for me) questions on it. Which one are you referring to?

Pretty much all of them

WIth stuff like that
see if there's a meta question for the tag
if not, make one.

There is
I was going to do tag cleanup but it doesn't make sense to me

ahh, someone should eventually get around to it then
Oh, tag cleanups can include VTCs and deletions

I wonder if deleted the low quality stuff improves the searchability of the site?

3:02 PM
it should, in theory
but you'd need a high rep user or a mod to really do that
and if its a ton of stuff in one tag, flagging dosen't always make sense

Are you referring the [delete] tag (which maybe should be removed) or to deleting the actual questions themselves because they are poor questions? I vote to close your question as "unclear what your are asking" ;)

Sometimes the duplicates serve as alternative phrasings.
But yes, I don't understand what's being achieved with tag cleanup. If the tag is banned from use, does it matter that those old posts have it?
Oh, it still shows up in /tag page

4:11 PM
have fun with that Android folks :P
if that hit on iOS, I'd get the patch by the end of the week.... already two OTAs since I got my phone, both with security updates

Bob
Hm. Apparently some people had their phones shipped today with an ETA of Wed next week
Hopefully mine makes it out tomorrow.
(no I'm not good at waiting)

what phone did you order?

Bob
@allquixotic LG G4 (H815). Probably the SEA version (Taiwan), w/ locked bootloader and SEA-specific firmware.
Ordered it Tuesday just in time for the typhoon to hit Taiwan :S
Oh, Stagefright patch is out for that model :P
Oh, two more today?
excellent
Be maybe a month. Probably not that long. LG's apparently decent with updates.
Oh, and there is a root available. Involves a flash via adb.

4:53 PM
nice

5:20 PM
@allquixotic I'm not used to aptX. It's too high quality. XD
So much crisp high end in these headphones is weird to me.
Though I agree with those reviews stating that the sound stage is a bit claustrophobic. But hey, no big deal.
The higher fidelity is nice though :3
Oops, dragging icons and browser tabs is broken again. Time to restart explorer.exe.

2 hours later…
7:07 PM
@BenRichards lol

@allquixotic Getting used to it! XD
Enjoying me some Blind Guardian right now :D

2 hours later…
8:56 PM
@allquixotic do you play HoTS?

2 hours later…
10:31 PM
@BenRichards Yeah, Explorer in Windows 10 in particular is very buggy. I've lost track of how many times I've had to hit the Restart button for Windows Explorer in Task Manager.

10:45 PM
Curious bears eats camper's kayak after being bear sprayed.

Anyone got experience with Digital Ocean?

@CanadianLuke Not directly. I use Linode.

11:20 PM
I'm wondering if they'd be a decent host for 3 web apps on one server, To be used by 10-20 people at a time. Or is it really just for developers?

Folk do that.
10-20 is hardly any load tho

11:42 PM
@JourneymanGeek: See the flag on this post. Spammer?

hm
I deleted a few links from techsultan and a registered user called sultan so... meh, deleted

11:59 PM
I have just been restarted! This happens daily automatically, or when my owner restarts me. Ready for commands.
