:D
@JourneymanGeek I still kinda want to get a blog started, but that should probably wait till I update Ghost... which should probably wait till I have the new server up... which should probably wait till I have lxd tested... which should probably wait till I finish documenting this one and get some sleep
hm.
@Bob I tried to start a blog once.. then I realised I have nothing to write about... :(
Bob
Bob
same :P
and I can't think of a blog name either
(open to suggestions btw)
00:24
lol
Mine's for an entirely unimaginative name ;p
Bob
Bob
@JourneymanGeek better than the crap I come up with
lol
"The Journeyman Geek"
Bob
Bob
there, all documented and fancy :P
well, not fancy yet
meh
00:44
lol
if an instruction says "remove blah account from SAM" How does one go about that?
meh. fancy is overrated ;p
I can see it in "local users" is that what would be meant by removing the account from SAM?
it's a general question.. as to how to remove an account from SAM
You delete the account, I guess
since sam is just the database that stores users and passwords
Possible also "Advanced System Settings > Profiles"
It's my wife's birthday today. We're making bacon wrapped, grilled cheese sandwiches for dinner tonight.
'cause she saw it on Facebook.

00:56
O_O
@allquixotic There's an SP-32 now...
only $13 cheaper than the SP-64
They also removed the 2013 ones
2015's probably gonna be out soonish
most likely just after the no setup fee promotion ends
lol
makes sense
@MichaelFrank got the cardiologist on speed dial?
@JourneymanGeek Nup. Just gonna manmode it. :)
01:35
@Bob really? @_@
> E3-1231v3
so, Haswell suddenly
32GB + ZFS = bleh, though
the biggest speedup of ZFS is ARC, and that is very memory-intensive to be useful
it's like page cache but smarter and makes better choices about what to keep in memory
ahh
http://www.ovh.com/us/dedicated-servers/enterprise/SP-64.xml is an invalid URL -- they moved the 2014 models to http://www.ovh.com/us/dedicated-servers/enterprise/2014-SP-64.xml O_O
2015 models must be really forthcoming soon
I'm ok with the 2014 model; Haswell isn't any faster really, and with a BIOS update it's perfectly serviceable

Cymothoa exigua, or the tongue-eating louse, is a parasitic crustacean of the family Cymothoidae. This parasite enters fish through the gills, and then attaches itself to the fish's tongue. The female attaches to the tongue and the male attaches on the gill arches beneath and behind the female. Females are 8–29 millimetres (0.3–1.1 in) long and 4–14 mm (0.16–0.55 in) in maximum width. Males are approximately 7.5–15 mm (0.3–0.6 in) long and 3–7 mm (0.12–0.28 in) wide. The parasite severs the blood vessels in the fish's tongue and so the tongue falls off, and then attaches itself to the stub of what...

what lies beneath

09:58
@MichaelFrank What is it? O__O
Is it bacon all the way to the bottom?
Baconated bacon wrapped in bacon?
The Baconator?
naw
cheese toast in bacon
9 hours ago, by Michael Frank
It's my wife's birthday today. We're making bacon wrapped, grilled cheese sandwiches for dinner tonight.
Holy shit
Cheese + Bacon =
10:19
@OliverSalzburg yup, grilled cheese sandwiches wrapped in bacon.

1 hour later…
11:32
Sounds delicious

2 hours later…
> bacon all the way down
that's how you say it ;p
@allquixotic I'll keep it in mind :D
Next time I'm in a bacon-related talk
ugh. Why is it that the ill documented, hard stuff is easy, and the supposedly well documented stuff dosen't work... :/
?
lol, owned by chat markdown? :P
what are you trying to do?
I wonder
And !@#$ YOU markdown
13:40
@ThatBrazilianGuy `I'd have never guessed it was that from the original message
There's a rogue DHCP server messing with the network at my workplace. I know it's MAC. How can I block it? I have the pfsense firewall credentials.
Google isn't helping me ;___;

@ThatBrazilianGuy a layer 3 firewall won't help
you need something on layer two, e.g. managed switch rejecting DHCP replies from that port
@ThatBrazilianGuy fixed font button, or hit ctrl+k

@tereško Wait to buy it, Steam Summer Sale starts Thursday
i know
No sense in buying it now
Anyway, I just need to wait for my father to get home so I can check with him if that blog I linked might help our issues
We got an Airport Time Capsule from a few years ago that might not be updated properly, and a first Generation iPad that can't update properly anymore
worst-case, we might need to buy a new Airport router to fix this
@NateKerkhofs NO. IT DOES NOT. IN FACT, THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS A STEAM SALE. ACTUALLY, WHAT IS THIS STEAM YOU SPEAK OF?
Bob
Bob
o.O
Try pressing the caps lock key.
:P
14:11
@Bob oh cool, blINKINg ligHTS!
14:47
They got me right.
@ThatBrazilianGuy Reminds me of how I used to mess with people by running programs to do dumb things like randomly toggle Caps Lock no matter whether you press it yourself. :P
15:20
Reminds me of those mainframe programmers who pressed their caps lock key -- once -- in 1978, and haven't pressed it again ever since
15:39
@_@ I keep hearing phones ringing in my headphones and can't tell if it's mine or not so I look up at my phone
I think other people in the office are having their phone ringing off the hook repeatedly with the same caller calling back over and over
I want to run over, pick up the phone and answer, "THEY'RE NOT HERE!"
no, Clippy

16:27
blah. That went badly.
Apparently my network is not fast enough to install ubuntu remotely over virt manager to the dedi
so I either need to do the install locally, transfer it over and import it, or do a kickstart file
O_O how about using a rdp to a server? :P
lol
there's no gui
and KVM won't do gui
hm I could do the install, move the vm over, and make a new VM with the same settings telling it to use that disk image
17:03
Hey! Do you guys have a favorite Firefox addon that supports desktop notifications?
Chrome has it for Gmail, but I need to use Gmail in Firefox because I can't run both FF and Chrome, too much memory. They are both killing me as is.
Quick js question, I have a function inside a $.ajax method, will it work if I call it from outside the $.ajax block ?
17:21
I wonder if Witcher 3 will be ok on my desktop. Considering getting it.
I find that my desktop is primarily CPU bound at this point. AM3 chipset, so I can't really upgrade any further, either.
But aside from the CPU, it's still really good.
CPU is a pain to upgrade if you have to swap out the motherboard though. I kinda don't want to have to, so I might just leave it.
I need to upgrade my mobo and desktop.
Hmm. AMD 890FX chipset, IIRC.
AM3 socket.
My motherboard has a Cooler Master V8 strapped to it. I'm not going to pull the thing apart unless I really have to. So I think it's in its final configuration.
Haven't touched it for a couple years anyway, I don't think.
@BenRichards if you have an nvidia GPU, it's probably fine -- the game is optimized heavily for any recentish Nvidia card and probably runs fine on a 7-series even
but my two AMD Tahiti GPUs chug along like it's Star Citizen 3 straight out of 2025
@Bob to get Ubuntu 14.04 booting automatically on my server (XFS root, UEFI install), I had to set the server to boot to the UEFI shell, and then write a 2-line .ns script (not much different from a Windows batch script, really...) to boot the Ubuntu Linux kernel's EFIStub. Grub simply refused to boot no matter what I did
again the fucking Supermicro firmware, probably, but that's life with a cheap, low-quality motherboard vendor with only the second generation of UEFI-supporting server mainboards.
"why does this work?" "I have no idea"
"why doesn't this work?" "I have no idea"
the real good news is, I have it automatically mounting ZFS on boot, and the networking comes up on boot, so now I just have to configure lxd and copy stuff over etc
Bob
Bob
17:36
@allquixotic eugh grub
doesn't adding the efistub entry directly work?
@studiohack ...*addon*?
Notifications are part of the HTML5 spec.
Firefox implements the Notification API.
Chrome implements the Notification API.
Chrome previously implemented a non-standard webkitNotification API that's now deprecated
@Bob extension
Bob
Bob
if Gmail has no support for the standard one, well... simply put, that's terrible
well, it doesn't have them automatically showing?
Bob
Bob
@studiohack The spec requires user confirmation
@Bob looking it up
Bob
Bob
17:40
Usual flow is the site requests notifications, the browser prompts the user, the user accepts or declines.
Yeah, I never, ever get the prompts for any site on multiple PCs for firefox. That's what's weird.
Bob
Bob
I wouldn't be surprised if Google simply doesn't want to support standards and other browsers. That seems par for the course these days.
<== not very happy with Google
Google is no longer the cool innovative kid anymore.
Apple is copying Google, but Google and Apple have fallen behind Microsoft lately. I think the whole thing is hilarious.
Bob
Bob
You could try this guy's shim, or my one from the comment on his answer.
Always been an MS fan, kind of an underdog thing, but now I'm getting rewarded for sticking around, it seems
Bob
Bob
17:42
I suspect Gmail does support the standard way
as I said, it would really be terrible of them not to
especially since the old one is deprecated in their own browser
I can't find how to simply enable that. It's just weird.
Bob
Bob
Two things to try, then. Install one of the shims linked above, or try changing your user agent to the Chrome one (yes, they do do user agent sniffing. see my earlier rant about their broken streetview embedded implementation on ff that magically works if you fake the UA)
@Bob NO :P
Bob
Bob
@studiohack Try following the help steps first. Is the entry in the settings at all?
@allquixotic o.O
*cackles with glee while Bob contemplates why this might be*
Bob
Bob
17:45
@allquixotic well, you'd have to wait till I get one of the servers to try for myself :P
is your ping to CA > or < than Germany?
Bob
Bob
@allquixotic < IIRC
ouch, ok
prolly not gonna beat OVH in North America on price per RAM/cpu/disk
@Bob I got it! Went into the Gmail settings and clicked the enable thing. Duh. Thanks! :)

@allquixotic What's your ping to Germany?
Pretty sure I'm being routed through the US
The undersea cable via Asia is so shit it might as well not exist.
17:48
i get like 175-200ms to germany, and 120ish to beauharnois, CA
Bob
Bob
urk, 120 isn't great either
beats 300 though :P
LTE pings are worlds better than any other cellular to date, but it's still higher ping on the first layer 3 hop than dsl/cable/fiber
Bob
Bob
I really want a local server
but it's over $200 for the equivalent of a $40-$50 SYS
not even equivalent; worse
@allquixotic yea, looks like I'm going through the US

does Abbott cackle menacingly as he willfully helps tank the AUS economy?
Bob
Bob
my ISP owns a major peering exchange in Sydney, so there's basically zero extra latency within Aus
it just goes straight to the US
17:52
lol
Bob
Bob
for ~90ms
then I'm at the mercy of whatever's over there
I can often pull sub-100ms to the eastern seaboard over LTE
Bob
Bob
looks like a 30ms jump from west to east coast
then a 50ms jump to Germany
west to east US is much more than 30ms usually
Bob
Bob
(all these numbers are one-way, double for RT)
17:54
ah
yeah 60 rtt is more like it
chicago and atlanta are popular game hosting destinations because of their lowish RTT to both US east and west
Bob
Bob
@allquixotic they claim to want to boost the economy by reducing the value of our dollar
@Bob great plan @_@
are they also trying to improve the economy by garnishing wages?
Bob
Bob
@allquixotic idea being to make it more economical for businesses to do stuff in-country
but won't invest in the infrastructure to attract more professional-type jobs
it ends up killing your international buying power, though
Bob
Bob
@allquixotic you don't say...
17:56
suddenly that Steam game becomes holy shit expensive
Bob
Bob
they seem to want manufacturing for some reason
but Aus is mostly service now
and manufacturing simply isn't that great when we're half a world away from everywhere else
@allquixotic well, they already were
know what's even better?
manufacturing is stupid; shipping in and out of AUS is ridiculously expensive due to the physical logistical costs of it; unless they want AUS to manufacture stuff for a thriving intranational (local AUS) trading/construction business.... if they plan to export, that's just dumb
AUS could have an amazing economy driven by the Internet
Bob
Bob
when aud was at parity, a 40 USD steam game in the US could cost 60 USD in here
if only their internet infrastructure wasn't stupid
Bob
Bob
when aud drops?
still 40 USD in the US, 60 USD here
it even displays the damn price in USD
17:58
...
Bob
Bob
that's just...
I mean... wut.
sounds to me like you need to pull a Hilsum
get others to buy it for you in US
and gift it
Bob
Bob
the reasoning is to match local physical stores & prices
lol that's a great inside joke
"pull a Hilsum"
Bob
Bob
which kinda makes sense, or did about a year ago
but now? now they often actually cost more on steam
17:59
meh, let the physical stores go out of business - they're outdated and outmoded
Bob
Bob
not all games
mostly the big AAAs
@allquixotic actually, physical stores still make quite a lot of sense here...
