6:00 PM
ive had more problems with windows 10 than I can even count/recall

@snipe huh?
Why not boot from a CD/DVD in UEFI mode?

so I would find my win10 install cd and use that?
*should

try to enable legacy mode in the bios then bot from the cd

I cannot go into the BIOS

or if not try to disable it and try again

6:02 PM
because the system is resuming

or a win7 DVD (or probably win8, 8.1, several linuxes, ...)

win7 DVD is not working at least

If you have UEFI then there is no BIOS

but windows 7 may not be able to recognise efi and will faill to install if so

so I need to find a install media that understands UEFI?

6:03 PM
You either have a firmware with UEFI, or a firmware with BIOS.
UEFI BIOS is not something which ever existed.

I dont bother with USB installs

Confusingly enough there is UEFI firmware with BIOS compatability mode.
win7 will recognise UEFI if booted in UEFI mode

Whats the "feature" of UEFI, other than making life harder?

does windows 7 understand EFI partitions

@Lauri oh, that is easy. BIOS is not well defined.

6:05 PM
hmmr

@snipe Yes, windows 7 understands GPT. And it understands the FAT32 UEFI system partition

ok but how will she back the data up from windows 10 first
without removing the drive

@Lauri BIOS is a firmware used on IBM XT (1980-ish!) made by IBM. And sort-of-copied by other people. There was no formal spec. Each BIOS might be a bit different in how it worked. At least UEFI is well defined.
So each UEFI system should understand at least the same basic subset.
This is a good thing. (tm)
It says nothing about particular UEFI version on specific motherboards.

allright
so I am unable to bootup from the CD and my primary OS is dead
what are my options
DVD I tried was win7 home pre
current OS thats dead is Win10 early tech preview thats expired

UEFI should be able to boot to the firmware before it tries to access the disk. So either there is a key to enter the firmware and there you can select 'boot from this path first' and 'not from HDD'. or it is badly implemented

6:08 PM
I had to plug the drive in to USB
sata to usb.

Granted, each single boot effort I had with UEFI has been frustrating

I did try to replace 10 with 7 but there was a stupid setup error

Yes, I can get the original bios boot menu working

But its foundation is much better than that for a BIOS firmware. And I expoect things to improve within a few decades.

so now the drive with 10 is just sitting on the shelf

6:08 PM
but if I choose DVD from that, it boots from the disk anyway

Did you choose the bootx64.efi on the DVD as boot path ?

I have never been asked any boot paths
as I said, my laptop does "System restoring" to the broken os

you have to select boot from efi in the boot menu

I do not have that option

is secure boot/legacy mode enabled
or disabled..?
it isnt the bios boot order its a selection menu btw

6:12 PM
I don't know what mode is enabled and what is not
I cannot boot from new install media
and system is resuming to broken OS

@Lauri check your UEFI firmware for a setting like CSM or Secure Boot

go to bios and check your boot options
I got a question in a bit

I cannot go to BIOS
I cannot

hmm ok

because the system is resuming to the broken fking os

6:15 PM
In that case: remove the disk. Boot and go to the firmware. Disable the disk.

yoou have to sometimes tap f12 or whatever like crazy
else it will go to the 1st bpot device not the bios

@Hennes thanks, that actually seems to be like a sane option here
I can tap like crazy to get to the startup menu / f8

It is one I am not happy with. I like to find out why it acts that way.
but from a practical point: remove the disk. Either wipe it or change firmware setting.

do you know what the button is for bios

I think its f10/f12
but google says f2
going to try that first

6:17 PM
ok
it isnt actually hard to remove the disk unless its a mac
anyhow I got a problem with offline files

yeah, keys are not working
removing HD

not even a giant magnet could remove stupid windows 10

I find it quite easy to remove from a VM

funnily enough it wasnt too bad in a VM

Should you ever want to return to it, try disabling fast boot

6:24 PM
it was an earlier build
I got a problem with offline files

With fast boot it will not shutdown when you try to shut it down. Instead it will close user programs but keep the kernel (and drivers) booted and suspended

I have set up the host and shared folder but in the client I fail to see any option to make the share available offline

with a full shut down you should not have had these problems (at the cost of gaining more flexibility but loosing bootspeed)

I dont have smb caching enabled
the ntfs permissions and share permissions
are fine

I have no experience with share folders.

6:28 PM
Im totally stumped as to why offline files isnt working
its enabled and ive formatted the CFC folder

ehm, not quite treue. I got muy experience from working at Tyco.
"Please store ALL info on the network share"
but I got share folders! That is nice!
"Please store ALL info on the network share"
But I can work at home without wasting 10 seconds to start a VPN!
"Please store ALL info on the network share"

Followed by
I got problem,
Me: "Let me restore all information from out backup taken from teh network"
they: But shared file broke down, like, ages ago
rinse and repeat several times

yep its like that

I still like to kill a few dozen users and dance on their grave

removed hd, win7 cd starting up
now trying to go to bios

good

6:37 PM
Snipe: please read this first:

yeah I cannot get to BIOS.. hmmm
going to use linux live cd or something
aww yeah
I used "shutdown" in the win7 install CD, now I get to the bios!

cool

UEFI is disabled O_o

I'd like to find some books on Computer history from about the 50s to the present... Or at least the 90s. My problem is that I haven't been able to find any such thing. I'm wondering if anyone would like to recommend something to me

thanks for help, I think I got this now

6:53 PM
'1950 is a tad before my time :)

7:13 PM
bbl

@L.B. Do they have libraries in your area?

2 hours later…
Jet
9:12 PM
heh no one is active

3 hours later…
11:49 PM
Is it wrong to be get upset when somebody just rubs you the wrong way?

A: Activate Office without contacting Microsoft and without Hotmail Address

Ramhound I bought new tablet that was supposed to come with Microsoft Office 365 (free 1 year subscription). The tablet you purchased came with Office 365 Personal. Office 365 requires an internet connection in order to activate. Every version of Office requires you to activate your license. Spe...

He is actually asking how to activate a subscription base service without creating and activating the account required to activate the subscription.
@jww talking about you.
