@allquixotic: XD. Some things are less confusing that way. Else I'd be watching myself from the office.. 0_0
The webapp for my cam is flakey as hell
probably dosen't help that its a webapp that just uses an embedded java thing

@bob iirc gps status shows glonass as squares

I'm forced to reboot my website VPS because of a glibc update :(
Noooooo uptime.!🐕
... I accidentally typed a dogmoji OO
79 days uptime.
I would restart services as needed after each update. At times, I would drop the system to rescue mode (init 1) then go back to normal.
This minimizes disruption and avoids the need to reboot, but sometimes, you just have to reboot the server.
...and the site is up and running again.
01:31
(I personally don't mind downtime :p(
Planned downtime is healthy
It's unplanned
Generally, I don't provide notice for any downtime less than five minutes
It's not a big site
Longer downtime events, such as those involving an OS-wide upgrade, are announced beforehand on Twitter.

That's why you need a schnauzer ;p

Looking at some pcaps.. started a new capture and went to a web server, and I noticed after resolving the DNS my computer sent two SYN packets to the web server, they seem to be pretty much the same on the inside. The only difference I see is the frame & sequence number, and different source ports. What's the reasoning for this? I assumed there would just be one SYN / ACK / SYN ACK from bits I've read
harhar bits..
Ahh joy. I get to runa GPU stress test on a 12 or 20 core box ;p
also i typed the syn / ack part wrong i see
that sounds fun =p

Yeah. Unigine valley runs quite well. I do want the damn thing to mess up if possible so we know what's wrong

@ekaj Not uncommon for browsers to open multiple TCP streams in parallel.
I know that to request images and such, I just didn't know it happened for the initial establishment of the connection
Bob
Bob
05:15
@ekaj follow the TCP streams and see what else is sent on either one
interestingly enough FF didnt do it, i did it in IE because i was too lazy to clear my chrome cache
which shouldnt make a difference anyways
also the 2nd of those streams is empty, it dies after the ACK
kinda interesting, at least to me
hm.
User can't log into a imac, no power, no response. I reach over to try to reboot... and...

Its unplugged ;p
I think it's because of favicons possibly.. chrome did two tcp streams, but one tried to get the HTTP/1.1 response first and the other tried to get /favicon.ico

@Boris_yo to transfer between photo progams and when processing you can leave the picture in a BMP format, which ends up being uncompressed. unless you have un-merged layers, then you have to leave it in what is usually a propritary format like .psd which might not be translatable to another program.
If that is not possible, or practical, you could always output it in a 100% compression (or highest numbers shown for it) jpeg, and only some of it will be lost , yet the file size will be reasonable.
Tiff can also be uncompressed full data, some places will use it (like nasa and satt imagery) but being in windows system ? i use bmp as the uncompressed like wav pcm for uncompressed audio.
Bmp with all the bits of course, because you can make bmps with less and less bits and it is smaller.
In all cases the resolution and bitrate of both the video and audio uncompressed should represent what you were working with, or it will be lesser data anyways. EX: if your doing audio in 48k you would not save out in 44.1k (or even the reverse) , if your doing pictures using 16bit color channels saving out in 24bit or 32bit (for transparency) is still not all the data.
I do not think (and do not know) if most of the stuff will save a full 16bit per color out as a bmp either, without using a propritary? I only use the 16bit channel stuff when processing over and over again, as nothing displays it anyways. it is used to preserve the whole through processing it (too much).

Getting ready to move my 2012 Nexus 7 to CyanogenMod 12 nightly builds.
Hopefully, they won't suck like the stock Android 5.0 ROMs.
Taking a NANDroid backup as I write this.

Q: Moving large size directory using rsync

asadzI plan to move from linux o/s a directory which is mounted on SAN(offboard) to external storage for backup. The dir size is 14TB. I do have experience moving files in/out using rsync but never done this with large size directories/files like now. The directories are laid down in terms on year/...

i'm not sure why its so difficult to answer this question.!
@Saladin: why do you care? ;p
and trying to transfer files, sight unseen, to a smaller drive sounds like trouble
you're better off breaking it down into manageable chunks

Looks like a decent Android tablet, even ignoring the Windows side.
But I question the value of Android/Windows dual-boot.
Maybe if there was a way to switch between the two without rebooting (some form of hibernation).

@Bob: I think its a horrid idea on a 32 gb system ;p

@JourneymanGeek Power consumption.
Also, the idea of assigning a single number as a rating for "features" is rather iffy.

@Bob it's probably bad that I have to run Chrome 40 with --ssl-version-min=ssl3 to access my company email...... :S
@Bob I kind of like that idea :S I prefer Android over Windows 8.1 by a factor of 100 as a touch OS, but having x86 windows on a small form factor device is also super useful
Bob
Bob
@allquixotic "probably"
@Bob lol
Bob
Bob
@allquixotic You should set up a local proxy for just that one site. Don't allow SSLv3 globally :P
@allquixotic Not too sure about the dual-boot switching though :\
Also, Win8 is actually quite nice on touch.
Better than Android, even, if only FF didn't drop their MUI browser :(
@Bob You mean a local MITM proxy and trust the proxy's cert in the browser, and have the proxy speak SSL 3 to the site and TLS 1.2 to Chrome?
14:17
@allquixotic: It so is ;p
Bob
Bob
@allquixotic Ya. About the only way I can think of to make it site-specific.
(especially since I don't need to remote home to check stuff at work ;p)
Bob
Bob
Oh, cool, Instantfox accepted my pull request.
@Bob yeah, but the big killer things I miss on my x86 Windows tablet are the back/home/window list capacitive buttons, the slide-from-top pulldown menu, the app drawer (way better than the start screen), and the way better Gmail app
lol
@allquixotic so... nearly everything?
Bob
Bob
14:21
@allquixotic The capacitive buttons aren't on most Android devices either, unfortunately. One of the bigger things holding me on Samsung, but I'll cave if something like the Yotaphone2 with better specs comes along :D
I don't like their on-screen keyboard either
SwiftKey is king
Bob

Android is slide from top, Windows is slide from right. Win10 has better notification support though.
@allquixotic I prefer Swype :P
on the topic of random Android apps, it appears that one of the apps I had installed got hijacked
this morning I had an app asking for my update approval: "Speed Boost Clean Masterpiec"
Bob

I'd say the Windows built-in keyboard choices are better than stock Android, but the lack of Swype is also annoying.

So... it was available on some Win7 tablets?
ahh, it was my Army Survival Guide app that got hijacked
com.appopus.survival
it originally required no permissions so that's why it asked for approval
turning a survival guide (basically a PDF in an app) into a "speed booster" malware.... yeah no thanks
Bob
Bob
Army Survival Guide?
@allquixotic I have automatic updates completely disabled.
Won't update apps I use without taking a backup first.
Saved me when Spotify updated to a broken version -_-
@Bob yeah, something the US Army wrote for people who get stranded
it's public domain since it was made by the govt
anyway, it was originally a useful app, but it's disappointing to see that it got hijacked into malware
I'm glad I didn't agree to update it
Bob
Bob
@allquixotic Just download a PDF? :P
@Bob sure, whatever... I'm actually not that concerned about losing the army survival guide on my phone; really not.... I'm more concerned about the fact that the app got apparently hijacked, or its developer sold out to a malware vendor
!!did the app get hijacked or did they sell out to a vendor?
14:28
@allquixotic did they sell out to a vendor
Bob

The biggest speed booster scam I know of is called DU Speed booster
Their advertising techniques include very aggresive scareware and misinformation in in-app an in-browser banner ADs (and javascript popup hijackers)
Think "WE HAVE DETECTED A VIRUS IN YOUR ANDROID CLICK HERE TO REMOVE"
They have 100 million ~ 500 million downloads. .____.
"You have malware click here" is a sure way to get me to never use an app.
Bob
Bob
16:25
@ThatBrazilianGuy really no different from the incessant ads targeted at desktop users
17:01
Is that so? I couldn't know the current trends of ADs, I've been using adblock for years.
@ThatBrazilianGuy I've dealt with this before. Had some ads of this sort on Wikia; promptly reported them.
I wonder if ad makers have been resorting to such aggressive unscrupulous techniques more and more because everyone who knows better has already installed adblock, so the only people who still deal with ADs are technically illiterate people, and therefore the advertisers adapt to their new audience.
If you're browsing Wikia and come across a bad ad, see community.wikia.com/wiki/Help:Bad_advertisements for instructions on reporting it

22:06
@ThatBrazilianGuy that's been happening for over a decade
22:20
@ThatBrazilianGuy IANAL, but pretty sure this is a DMCA Section 512(f) violation.
> **Misrepresentations**.— Any person who knowingly materially misrepresents under this section—
> (1) that material or activity is infringing, or
> (2) that material or activity was removed or disabled by mistake or misidentification,
> shall be liable for any damages, including costs and attorneys’ fees, incurred by the alleged infringer, by any copyright owner or copyright owner’s authorized licensee, or by a service provider, who is injured by such misrepresentation, as the result of the service provider relying upon such misrepresentation in removing or disabling access to the material
It's going to get them sued sooner or later.
Bob
Bob
@DragonLord Google never took action. There were no damages.
@Bob This is under the assumption that the false notices continue.
It costs Google money to process DMCA takedown notices.
Bob
Bob
@DragonLord Probably won't.
Pity, but there it is.
Precedent says the automated submissions they make are perfectly legal, and they're protected if there's a mistake.
@DragonLord True, but that would be minimal. Unless punitive damages were applied, which is highly unlikely based on precedent - this has happened before.
Don't have time to dig up the cases right now.
Gotta go soon.
My Windows-using friends. Now that Lenovo has shot themselves in the foot, who do you like as a PC manufacturer?
22:36
@duozmo I'll just note that SuperUser is not specifically a site about Windows or for Windows-users. While many of us here use Windows for some purpose or another (often, because we're forced to by work), that is not necessarily the case. SuperUser is actually for power users on any platform.
However, I'll go ahead and say that I still like Lenovo, but I will wipe my disk clean before using their PCs from now on :P
@allquixotic Yep, didn’t think of it as such.
as soon as I buy a system it's getting wiped so I can put my own OS on it
@allquixotic Heh, k, nice
there aren't very many manufacturers I trust to be better than Lenovo -- it's just that Lenovo got caught, whereas the others may be hiding it well enough that no one knows what they're doing
and as far as hardware, I still prefer Lenovo's hardware over Dell, HP, Asus, Acer, etc
Any experience with Sony or Toshiba?
22:44
recently fixed a 2011 model Toshiba Satellite... large, heavy, lots of plastic, no trackpoint... not my kinda system...
Strike Sony from that question. I guess they aren’t making VAIO anymore. My knowledge is quite out of date
I guess the nearest runner-up in my head is Dell, but only certain product lines
I had a Dell from 2000-2004 I liked
Which product lines?
the Dell Precision line of mobile workstations is pretty much the best you're going to find for build quality in a laptop outside of the ThinkPad range... well, there's also the Panasonic Toughbook, but those are pretty overpriced and excessively strong
Any experience with ASUS? Their displays have gotten pretty okay I know, but no experience with their laptops
22:51
I have a friend with an ASUS ROG series laptop. It's a beast.
a really high-end 15.6" Precision workstation barely broaches the $3000 mark with the "included in price" storage option (you can get SSDs cheaper aftermarket and install them).... tack on some employer discounts and you're looking at about the same as a good ThinkPad.
actually you could probably save more by getting the base RAM and upgrading that aftermarket too
I’m definitely putting a premium on build quality
23:16
Any of you heard of screenshot.net?
@Seth I have not.
Ok. I was just asking because @DragonLord seemed to think it was a spam site and it was just detected as possible spam on my site.
in Ask Ubuntu General Room, 12 mins ago, by SmokeDetector
[ SmokeDetector ] Blacklisted website: How do I take a screenshot? by Emily028 on askubuntu.com
The answer and site look ok so far, just asking in case any of you have seen it before.
reviewing basic packet transfer stuff, not assuming propogation... the end to end delay = L (length) / R (link rate)... for N links, delay = N*(L/R).. am I correct in assuming that P packets over N links is N(P+1)(L/R)? ..I've seen others say (L/R)(N+P-1) and N(P(L/R)).. funny thing as all 3 answers differ by +/- P =p
@Seth I wouldn't consider that spam.
@MichaelFrank I agree, hence my asking. I just noticed however that the user posted another answer with the same link. Makes it more suspicious .
Thanks for the help! I think I will just leave it for now.
23:26
The user might be spamming. ;P
Maybe I should just remove the links, since they aren't really helpful at all ;)
@Seth Yea, that's a better idea.
Cool, all cleaned up!
Seth, what's your ham call sign?
if you don't mind
@Seth I would not have allowed it to stand. I would have removed the answer and posted a CW answer with the content (sans spam link).
Screenshot.net is known spam.
23:41
@ekaj I do kind of mind since these are completely public chats (and indexed by Google) and my call is irrevocably tied to my home address. I'm in region 7 though :)
Ah, I'm region 8 :)
Had my callsign about.. 13-15 years now? somewhere around there. 13 I believe
@DragonLord Well the answer was posted last december and the account not seen since then. I deleted the other answer since it had no useful content but the first one did.
hey everyone
@ekaj Neat! I got mine just last year (or two years ago?), but I haven't even had a QSO yet. Couldn't afford more than a FT-60R and none of the nearby repeaters are active :(
I don't use mine a whole lot unfortunately, but it is a great thing to have.. I used to maintain my QSO log but not so much anymore =p
23:45
@JourneymanGeek: Would it be a good idea if we had SmokeDetector for Super User?
i don't think websites can catch on fire, can they?
SmokeDetector detects spam and other bad things :)
@DragonLord Lemme know if you guys decide you want it, I can help you get it set up. (Super easy)
I figured that much, but I'd never heard of it =p it sounds interesting though, I may look into it
Hey can someone help me out with a little issue I'm having trying to open up a program
Is it a specific spam filter called Smoke Detector?
what's the issue @bmende
23:49
Hey thanks ekaj, I'm trying to open Strados2, a java program found here gravon.de/gravon/stratego/strados2.jsp
I get "unable to launch the application" error
Is english your first language?
yes
yes
Should I host an instance of SmokeDetector myself?
23:51
thanks for link
I came back to superuser for this specific question, but forgot I actually had an account here
@DragonLord That's not necessary, but you can.
I honestly don't know :/ I haven't used strados before
@ekaj no, it is a chatbot written by several SE folks that uses websockets + the API to scan ever post as it comes in or becomes active for spam keywords and other signals.
ah okay, thanks @Seth
SE guys are pretty handy =p
23:54
@DragonLord Here's my pull request you can use as an example (if you want).
thanks for trying ekaj, a lot of other people are having troubles with it too. If anyone can solve this problem and help me run the application, I would pay them $10 paypal
Just add the SU room to the array on line 41 and populate any reasons you don't want posted in the "unwantedReasons" part (cannot remember by proper programming words atm..)
no need to pay, a lot of people here like to help out just because solving those types of problems is fun
if I wasn't doing homework on the side I'd take a crack at it probably
As the resident spam hunter here, it would be great if I used more powerful tools to uncover spam and abuse
I know I love this community, but I just really wanted to figure this out
23:59
Setting it up.
Will create a dedicated room and sock account for it.
How much CPU does it demand?
