12:00 AM
My VPS has lots of unused capacity, but I don't want to disrupt my blog.

I doubt it would do that
just guessing honestly though, how much unused capacity you talkin?

maybe I can add a point bounty, I have a 150 points

More than 95% of capacity unused.

i would just go 50 if you do bmende :) and capacity is kinda specific to the original specs anyways @DragonLord :p 95% of your RAM free isn't much when ya only have 100 megs to begin with

2 GB of RAM.
It's a Linode 2GB VPS.
Two CPU cores, Ivy Bridge-EP.

12:03 AM
ah, I've heard good things about linode, I've been using OVH and EC2 myself so far

About 1.6 GB available.

I'd say you'd be fine, but you'd have to talk to one of the guys who wrote it to be sure, or just run a quick 5 min spot check test

@ekaj I think I'm going all-in on this one :)

good luck :) if it's unsolved and I have more free time to actually look at it better I'll check it out

@DragonLord I wouldn't be the person to ask, @Undo would be, he hosts the shared instance.
I doubt it will greatly effect your blog though.

12:09 AM
The big question is how much CPU does it use.

ha ok, is anyone going to be upset about a duplicate question posted?

ah i forgot about that already, i wouldn't post if it's a duplicate quetion, maybe just offer a bounty on the original and post a comment

Can i offer a bounty on a question that I didn't post? Bc it's on a different acc
or perhaps i could transfer points or something...

you can't transfer points. you definitely can offer a bounty on someone elses question.

awesomeeee i'll give it atry

12:15 AM
waaaait

@DragonLord You realize you can just use Undo's instance right? That powers every instance running currently..

FIRST. Use the contact us link to ask for the accounts to merge

Save you some CPU usage ;)

@DragonLord: maybe shove it in its own channel?

That's already planned.

12:15 AM
I'd sorta prefer not to have it on RA personally cause noise.

I'm testing it in PQA&T first.

@bmende: I'm not completely awake but you should ask for an account merger.

in Post Quality Advice and Tips, 7 mins ago, by DragonLord
Be advised: I may be testing a SmokeDetector instance here. Please stand by.
A new chat room will be created for SmokeDetector.

@JourneymanGeek oh ok
so i guess i'll try to find contact us

main site bottom right.

12:18 AM
gg journeymangeek

ok found it
Do i need to wait until the acc are merged to do the bounty>
?

I don't think so. You can go ahead and do the bounty, it will use up the # of points you specified, and then when the merger completes your points from both accounts will be added.

ok sweet ty
actually don't see the 'start a bounty' link on that question strange, maybe i need to wait

You have to wait 2 days to start a bounty - so another 30 hours unfortunately

ahhh I see ok nice

im noob ha

i forgot that too, don't feel bad =p
had to do the google

:)

New account created.

are you a student dragon?

12:42 AM
@DragonLord very very little, and we're running every instance (not really, it's all one bot, just in multiple rooms) that I know of on the network on my server.
But I have to ask, any specific reason not to just add your room/config to mine?

@undo must be @JourneymanGeek's brother

@ekaj Not possible, brothers can't mod a site together for very long :P

true.. I could see that causing problems =p

1:06 AM
Nope, he's not. He's a fellow sr mod tho

darn, two dog mods and not brothers, what are the chances

A: Can you ever lose saved information from a bad hibernation/boot on Windows?

DragonLord's SmokeDetectorYou shouldn't lose information already stored on the disk. However, a write-back cache might explain this. A write-back cache increases performance by placing data to be written to disk into a memory area and deferring the actual writing onto the disk to a later time for performance. However, ap...

Can someone upvote this to give the account 20 reputation?

@ekaj very high. SE has a few canine mods 🐕

darn, the felines need to make a comeback
anarchy
and bad spelling too apparently

@JourneymanGeek, any suggestions?
Is anyone around?

1:28 AM
@DragonLord What room will the bot run in?
we can just add it to write list instead of relying on reputation

Haven't decided yet. I'll be using chat.stackexchange.com/rooms/19572/post-quality-advice-and-tips for testing.
Journeyman Geek suggested a dedicated room for it.

@DragonLord done

I'll be creating a dedicated room for the bot shortly.

ping me / another blue person when you do

Bot's not entering the room. Any ideas?
It worked on my main account.

1:39 AM
@DragonLord using the right creds?

Yes as far as I can tell.

what's Python telling you?

@JourneymanGeek whoa emoji

there should be a bunch of stuff in the console

It's just telling me CI Socket Created and some seemingly normal output
GlobalVars.specialrooms = [{
                           "sites": ["superuser.com"],
                           "room": GlobalVars.wrap.get_room("19572"),
                           "unwantedReasons": []
                           }]

1:40 AM
Bot runs on Python now ?
I thought it was simply a js injection

@DragonLord You need to set the primary room to your room
it's trying to talk in CHQ but it doesn't have permissions
and remove everything in specialrooms, no use having it try to post to rooms it can't get to
@HackToHell this one's more robust, designed to be run headless on a server

@HackToHell: nice thing about chat on a phone ;p
Amusingly my work box can't render it.

right
it's trying to login to chat.mse and it can't
might complain when it tries to send messages to a null room, but we'll see

yeah

Okay, it seems to work.

not posting to the room, though
it should do that on boot

This code really needs to be better documented.

prolly, but we don't exactly have many resources

Bob
2:21 AM
@Undo designed to be headless? Hmm. I might look into porting Cavil if I ever get time :P

2:57 AM
Would "Dragon's Eye" be a good name for the bot?

3:21 AM
@Undo: Problem seems to be that it's hardcoded to use the Tavern.

@DragonLord you should be able to just balete those lines

I restored those lines and changed the Meta site to chat.stackexchange.com/rooms/19572/post-quality-advice-and-tips
Still no messages.
Okay, had to use first_start
Okay...

@DragonLord'sSmokeDetector Of course
Whatever, I give up.
I'm deleting the extra account.

Guess that was a bit of a learning experience.
I might just learn how to write my own chatbot in the future.
Back to the usual reviews.

Q: Why is the moderator diamond so big?

Player72If you take a look here, you'll notice that the badge is much bigger than the username itself (and it is a joke but used to hide the actual name). I have also noticed that the diamond is a bigger font size than the username as well. I'd suggest we just keep it the same size as the username. Wha...

OMG, the most awesome thing ever just happened in KSP
SSTO VTOL spaceplane :D
I turned on the under-wing downward-facing engines; about a second later I activated the rear-facing engines; and the plane took off with the engines more or less perfectly balancing one another... the thrust from the engines caused them to create a thrust vector at a 45 degree angle with respect to the ground, which was powerful enough to override other aerodynamic forces. I was transonic very quickly; supersonic in seconds; and hypersonic by about airliner cruising altitude.
unfortunately, the powerful aerodynamic forces of the high supersonic range tore off the vertical-facing engines... so now it's left with only the two rear-facing engines :/

1 hour later…
6:56 AM
Managed to fly the same spaceplane with a more conservative climb-out. Backed the throttles way off until the atmosphere started to thin out. I stayed just out of the transonic range until I was through the thickest part of the atmosphere, then I basically let it loose. Nothing fell off the craft ;p

7:27 AM
That's the best thing for any aircraft.

hello
anyone here know what stratego is?

Stratego /strəˈtiːɡoʊ/ is a strategy board game for two players on a 10×10 square board. Each player controls 40 pieces representing individual officers and soldiers in an army. The objective of the game is to find and capture the opponent's Flag, or to capture so many enemy pieces that the opponent cannot make any further moves. Players cannot see the ranks of one another's pieces, so disinformation and discovery are important facets to gameplay. == Gameplay == Typically, one player uses red pieces, and the other uses blue pieces. Pieces are colored on both sides, so players can easily ...

Oh hey journeyman
yeah that

;p
LMWTFY...
(Actually I remembered it was a boardgame)

7:42 AM
lmwtfy?

let me wiki that for you ;p

lol
oh i thought u were going to wiki lmwtfy for me
but then the lightbulb went off

loooool

ha

Bob
8:26 AM
@allquixotic ...downward-facing?

8:53 AM
boo

1 hour later…
9:53 AM
Halp!
I just bought a StarTech USB3 2 HDEH
Lets render everything on the CPU (and no, not on the GPU part of a CPU. In software)
It is my first device with USB3 in it.

lol
how does it perform for 'normal' use?
(I doubt you can game on it ;p)

@ThatBrazilianGuy meta.superuser.com/q/9166/10165 ;p
(since you're apparently the only RA regular who speaks the language I know of ;p)

10:22 AM
No idea yet. It worked on the work laptop after a reboot (Yay, it will serve my third display at work with excel files and tailed log files on it.)
Just testing it at home now.
Hmm, plugging it in killed my sound.

Speakers: USB.
Uhmm.. Darn HDMI. Who the F- want to have audio over HDMI?
USB3 audio device: disable ... ok sound is back
Right to the sung text "we came to drop bombs on you" (my thought exactly)

lol
People who want one cable from $device to a TV?

Opoptygma Berzerk - Weight of the world
I do not mind that for TVs. But just no on monitors
And esp. not with windows stealing the output and moving it to a freshly plugged in device
Re display: Open office calc is just fine with it.
Ditto email/thunderbird.
Hmm, moving open office off the screen left it full of artifacts
And moving fiorefox to it means blind clicking and trying to drag it back (solved by disabling the display).
Drivers--

ya
and eh. That reminds me. I need to test the display on the shared box
(I suspect the digital outs on the system all died. Its the second video card on that old system ._.)
so if I can get HDMI working with another system the monitor is fine

10:44 AM
Not updating the screen (or even forgetting part of it which was already drawn).
Bad first impression.

Though to be fair. Using both that and teamviewer at the same time
Might work without TV

maybe?

I'll try that tomorrow at work (2 monitors connected to the dockingstation, one will be to the new adaptor via USB)
Right now I need TeamViewer so I can use my proper keyboard and a big screen
Hmm, Set of display. Move somethign to it (application logs in wintail).
Wait 10 seconds... and see the app crash.
Someone wil be surprised by my quick (queue is down!) reporting :)

Bob
11:05 AM
@allquixotic What do you use for high-current MicroUSB charging cables?
I'm looking at the Anker ones right now. They claim to be 21 AWG o.O
@JourneymanGeek o.O
I don't really get the Portuguese SE sites... do we really have that large a proportion of users who speak it?
Hm. Pop of Brazil is 200 million, so maybe...
@Hennes Isn't HDMI audio over a digital protocol? You'd get better quality, especially over longer distances (assuming the DAC+amp on the receiving end isn't much worse than what you'd use otherwise).

I donno. Maybe they have some degree of critical mass in SE + people who are enthusiastic about it .
@Bob but but...
the speakers on monitors suck ;p

This is HDMI to DVI, so no audio at all when I use HDMI
And the A501 speakerbar which I normally use is not horrible.

Bob
@JourneymanGeek The assumption is you're using some proper audio setup :P
Point is, audio over HDMI does have its uses.

Not at the computer. That just has sound for games and sometimes for a movie
Yup. At movie/entertainment it is a good thing.
The HDMI cable though should have larger and more sturdy connectors.
But that is a different point

11:24 AM
@Bob which is essentially what I said ;p
@Hennes: like the 13W3? ;p

I still should have 13W3 cable somewhere. (near an old sun 5)
But nah. DVI size was perfect. Better than the DB15/VGA plug. Big enough to handle. Solid connection. Just expand it with audio connectors to the side.
That would even leave it pin for pin compaible

I just threw one out (I don't have the monitor for it, and I have a known good 13w3 to VGA adaptor for a SGI box I can't log into cause I lost the root password ;p)
DVI also has analog pins tho.

Yup. 4 of them (R G B and sync? Not sure)

(and I've just started moving from DVI to newer gear ;p)

I have newer gear. And it all goes DVI -> HDMI (new gear) HMDI -> DVI
E.g laptop (2xDVI and 2x DP) -> HDMI ('audio' amplifier) -> HDMI -> DVI (beamer)

11:32 AM
Let's see. My main screen is dvi/VGA.

With classic analog cables for the sound.

My secondary screen is HDMI/VGA/composite

My main screen is:
x DVI-D - 24 pin digital DVI
4 x USB 2.0 - 4 pin USB Type A
1 x VGA - 15 pin HD D-Sub (HD-15)
1 x component video input - RCA x 3
1 x composite video input - RCA
1 x S-video input - 4 pin mini-DIN
Secondary is VGA/DVI/HDMI (using HDMI means the screen colour change if the audio gets louder. SO I do not use that)
And the old third screen I used for testing is VGA/DVI (old. First 19" flatscreen ever sold over here)
Neovo F419 something
2006-ish I think
Still works though. and i mainly connected to a server when I play with those

Bob
o.O SSD refurbs?

11:40 AM
Heh. I would not mind a SSD refurb for a work laptop.

Or a fast doid?

Esp. since I would leave most of it empty. So the controller on the SSD may as as many spare/bad sectors as it wants

Bob
Apparently they're most likely just pulled out of upgraded laptops.
It's a Dell/LiteOn, $38, 128 GB. M.2 connector.
I don't have any M.2 devices :(
They post overseas for $54 incl. shipping :P

Lol
Tempting but I have no m2 devices :p

Bob
ebay.com.au/itm/… <= if anyone wants (or can make use of) it
@JourneymanGeek Yea, if I had one or was planning to get one, I'd buy this in a heartbeat.
For that price? Why not.

11:44 AM
(Also... Weeeeel.... I have two active laptops and a desktop)

Bob
Make a great cache drive if nothing else.

11:58 AM
If I could use it in my laptop I would make the the amin (and only) drive
No movies, no music, no VMs... No need for more than 100GiB
Hmm, with VMs I am almost at 90GiB usage though. (Half of that from virtual machine disk files)

12:19 PM
I tend to keep those on external or on the network anyway

1:08 PM
Bah, googles does not auto match my -80F in real temp

1:59 PM
> Don't worry, even if it says alpha, it's stable.
Right...
