Way ahead of you guys :P
@JourneymanGeek o.O
@Bob: one of the benefits of being in Australia? ;p
Bob
Bob
@jokerdino It's currently 2:30 AM. I posted those messages about 12:30 AM :P
> “The changes might seem subtle--some readers of Wikipedia might not even know there's a change!”
@Bob lol
For a second, I thought it was hacktohell posting that image. What happened to you Bob?
Bob
Bob
15:44
@jokerdino Bored.
Which reminds me, we never did make progress on that project :P
I can't even remember what project it was.
I think that probably means we are dumping it.
Bob
Bob
stats for AU?
I can't remember what stats they were supposed to be
Did you make real progress? Else we can leave it aside.
Bob
Bob
Oh, it's only been about a year since we last looked at it.
I completely forgot, to be honest.
Just saw the long-dead chatroom.
I mean, I have an upcoming project coming on.
Using Javascript and Qt.
Which probably needs new bored people.
Bob
Bob
> The last message was posted 219 days ago.
That's only 7 months!
Bob
Bob
@jokerdino Do tell?
Wait, JS and Qt... I might be happier not knowing...
It's at concept stage. Creating a kanban app.
15:47
@jokerdino Did you do anything ?
Bob
Bob
Kan...ban?
I kinda know QML, haven't really done anything useful yet
@HackToHell You are supposed to start with coding the UI no?
!! tell bob wiki kanban
@jokerdino me !! ?? Okay ._.
@jokerdino I'm in for Qt, but JavaScript, !!no
15:48
I am learning JS atm.
@allquixotic for kanban style app, JS seems logical. O_o
Bob
Bob
Heh. Strangely, despite how much I dislike JS, I'm actually somewhat proficient in it now.
And the other option is to write it in C/C++
Bob
Bob
@HackToHell That doesn't really tell me much about it :P
@Bob you can't not be these days
And I don't know both
Bob
Bob
15:49
@HackToHell ...you do know there's literally hundreds, thousands, of other languages and frameworks?
@Bob It's effectively a notepad
@Bob Well we wanted to use Qt because it works on all platforms
Bob
Bob
When doing anything graphical, C/C++ should probably be the last thing to consider.
> Qt because it works on all platforms
Bob
Bob
15:50
@HackToHell So does Python, so does Java, so does C# (to an extent), so does... a whole lot of stuff.
!!no
bad reason to use Qt
Bob
Bob
@allquixotic He's dead :(
@Bob FEEX IT!
Bob
Bob
Personally, C# is my first port of call for anything remotely GUI-related.
15:51
^
though Java/SWT is quite nice too
I can design stuff in Java
@allquixotic: Qt because I hate Gtk.
But @jokerdino doesn't know it !
Bob
Bob
!!poke
@jokerdino WinForms, while ugly, is cross-platform on mono
Bob
Bob
15:52
@allquixotic And quite easy.
!!poke
@Bob That didn't make much sense. Use the !!/help command to learn more.
Bob
Bob
aww
Heya whoa. Qt5 is really nice and awesome.
Bob
Bob
!!listcommands
@Bob help, listen, eval, coffee, refresh, forget, info, listcommands, tell, afk, awsm, ban, unban, color, convert, define, doge, domain, export, findcommand, forgetseen, github, google, hang, inhistory, import, jquery, learn, test, why, ok, hello, friday, after5, theanswer, caution, nicethings, europe, goaway, status, idk, thatword, poptart, routertroubleshooting, networkingproblem, meta, rlemon, no, foxno, yes, orlmente, fixit, uio, taytaytay, ping, maybe, say, facepalm, hv, ohhh, whocares

15:52
Quick Qt is awesome, though QTCreator keeps seg faulting
Bob
Bob
One of those is supposed to say "I'm alive, I'm alive!"
And honestly, the idea is to get an app on Linux and maybe Android.
Bob
Bob
Or was it "I'm awake"?
!!live
@allquixotic I'm not dead! Honest!
Bob
Bob
15:53
@jokerdino Then just do JS + HTML.
Don't mess around with porting apps.
Webapps work well on just about any platform.
@jokerdino hmm
Noo. How else can I learn Qt5?!
Bob
Bob
@allquixotic Wasn't their Android support rather pricey?
!!learn qt5 stop trying, Jokerdino
@allquixotic Command qt5 learned
15:55
<3
What would that do?
Bob
Bob
Yea, Xamarin pricing for serious stuff is crazy: store.xamarin.com
@HackToHell: don't listen to these guys. Get back to JS + Qt5 ;p
Bob
Bob
Hopefully, with MS's latest releases, we can get good free C# on Android soon.
@jokerdino lol, wokey :D
15:56
@Bob that'd be weird: MS-sponsored C# (with GUI support) on Android O___O
like Xamarin but better and freeware?
They have worked on a lot more code than us though
It's been a long time since I coded anything
Bob
Bob
@allquixotic Ayup.
> wants to be a dev
Bob
Bob
@HackToHell And abandoned a lot more, probably :P
> been a long time since I coded anything
!!okay
15:57
@allquixotic That didn't make much sense. Use the !!/help command to learn more.
Bob
Bob
!!meme okay
Bob
Bob
@allquixotic Well, gotta (re)start somewhere.
@HackToHell True that. But you don't think we are making a bad decision right now?
Bob
Bob
@jokerdino Really, you can use anything and get it to work.
15:58
I think Qt5 is a fine choice overall because the GUI will be nice and pretty, but to avoid being dubbed a Lamer (™), use C++
"but I don't wanna" is not an excuse :D
o_0 Phone's getting heated up after flashing a new kernel
Bob
Bob
@allquixotic Personally, I'll take any excuse to use VS :P
@jokerdino I think we will stick to Qt
I like it :D
Bob
Bob
It's my favourite IDE by far.
Though, NetBeans is decent too.
using (just) Qt in C++ is pretty decent, anyway; the difficulty level is no harder than Java or C#
15:59
QtCreator is still far better then eclipse
when C++ gets really painful is when you start including stuff like Boost or C++11 functionality
you must have an epic beard to use Boost effectively
anything else and you're 6 feet under
Bob
Bob
@allquixotic Beard floaties!
And I kinda hate C
@JourneymanGeek Did you tag me in a post and then delete it ? :O
I got an email :P
it was probably a misclick -- mice, keyboards and even touchscreens aren't optimized to be ergonomic for dogs
16:09
@allquixotic Haha. The thing is I am only moderately good with python. Still learning other languages like JavaScript, Java and French.
@HackToHell yay!
Bob
Bob
@jokerdino Then why not do this thing in Python? :P
because Hack doesn't like python
@jokerdino rightly so!
Bob
Bob
@jokerdino Blasphemy!
I bet he likes Perl. The outrage!
@allquixotic :(
Eh. I never actually figured out Python GUIs.
@jokerdino doesn't know
Bob
Bob
16:13
Great for short quick crap, though.
I have had co-developed a python Gtk3 app. It has come off well.
@Bob Oh definitely. Not so good for maintenance I must think
Bob
Bob
@jokerdino It's perfectly maintainable if you write it well.
Moreso than Perl, anyway.
> write it well.
Python code almost always comes with heavy bindings to C... "Python is for people who are too lazy to learn pointers but are happy to accept some inefficiency in their code in return for not having to specify the type of variables"
Bob
Bob
@jokerdino Applies to every language. Except those that are never maintainable.
16:15
@Bob like ?
Bob
Bob
@HackToHell You can't NDA GPL. Can you?
@HackToHell You ever heard of GolfScript?
@Bob Sure! Illegally.
@Bob You can't
Waiting for IBM/some other company to sue mediatek
Bob
Bob
Under GPL, you can provide the source to anyone you wish.
Unless they modify the licence, in which case it is no longer GPL.
@Bob nope
16:16
they can't modify the license of Linux or anything that incorporates the Linux code though
Bob
Bob
@allquixotic Eh, I just like the list comprehensions :P
Bob
Bob
And a great REPL.
Still can't find a good C# REPL :\
@allquixotic Of course. By "modify the licence", I meant the licence of code they wrote. You can never modify the licence of someone else's code without explicit permission.
@Bob PowerShell and CSharpCodeProvider?
Bob
Bob
@allquixotic Not a good REPL.
Missing autocompletion, for one.
And it doesn't really lend itself well to loops and functions.
16:21
Google should have released AOSP as GPL instead of ASL
@HackToHell they wanted to be "business-friendly" (read: allowing businesses to make proprietary stuff and not having to open source it)
so now they have to use underhanded tactics to prevent people from successfully making a competitor to Android that's closed source and based on Android itself
Though ASL is probably the reason why every phone manufacturer uses it
Bob
Bob
@HackToHell Never seen it called ASL before :\
Yes. Apache is called the Open source license or something.

@jokerdino Based on cookies if logged out, google account if logged in.
I was looking at logged out stats.

"Google ads across the web" thinks I'm male, 25-34 (correct), languages = "None" (I don't speak ANY human language!!!), and interests = movies, music & audio, TV & video, and ... "Adult Content"
!!meme okay
16:31
@allquixotic LOL
@Bob, was it you that was telling me, weeks ago, about that ssh-like protocol that has auto-resume support and is resistent to disconnections
What did you search for :P :P
I can't remember its name
And I need a better alternative to SSH tunneling
It's too damn slow
why would google know if i'm into "Adult Content" >_>
16:33
@allquixotic Because you're male human.
@ThatBrazilianGuy but I don't speak any human language!
not even English!
Bob
Bob
@ThatBrazilianGuy mosh
Bob
Bob
@allquixotic Heh. My one at work is perfectly fine, it got all the tech and programming stuff. And it knows I speak English.
(removed) and I'll deny even having ever written it.
Bob
Bob
16:35
At home, I speak no language, and apparently I like Action & Adventure Films, despite having watched maybe 15 movies in my entire life.
@Bob at work, going to that page displays <html><body>Advertisement</body></html>
Bob

Also, somehow "Beauty & Fitness" got on that list.
I don't even...
@Bob WHAT
How can it have different profiles for home and work? Doesn't it is google-account based?

@ThatBrazilianGuy Cookie-based if you're logged out.

BGM
BGM
Hello, everyone
Anyone here know about setting up virtual windows servers?
@BGM using what virtualization platform? ... or are you not to that point yet?
BGM
BGM
Ha ha! Hi, allquixotic - nice to see you here! Someday I'm going to buy you a beer.
Bob
Bob
16:39
@BGM Yea, kindamaybe
I don't drink (much) ;p
Looks like I speak both "N/D" and "None" idioms! Now I just have to become proficient in NULL!
Morning all!
BGM
BGM
@allquixotic Okay, so I have this 2-CPU/6-cores each Dell PowerEdge R620 that I want to install SQL server upon, but SQL server licenses by the core and since I don't want to pay $9600 for SQL, I decided to run a VM on the machine on which to install SQL.
I could totally freak you out about how I never consume liquids directly because it's Evil per my religion and I only ever obtain water by partaking of foods containing water (honeydew being a good example of a food containing lots of water), but if I did attempt to freak you out thusly, I'd be lying
BGM
BGM
16:40
Since I bought the machine from Dell, and bought SQL through Dell, they recommended me to use VMware Server.
@BGM Do the license allows running it on a VM? Do you own a license for the OS you'll install on the VM?
Bob
Bob
@BGM Heh, I was just setting something similar up on a T620 :P
BGM
BGM
@ThatBrazilianGuy Yes, the license allows for a VM. I have the license for Windows Server 2012 and it allows 2 virtualized instances.
Bob
Bob
I'd say SF is better, but they may or may not take kindly to 'beginner' questions (is this beginner?)... so... yea. Maybe not.
BGM
BGM
I've some experience running Windows 7 on VirtualBox, but VMware is baffling me even to install.
Bob
Bob
16:41
@BGM I believe it just restricts itself to a single core if you don't purchase licences for more.
BGM
BGM
I just want something simple!
@Bob The problem is that there are two CPUs, each with 6 cores.
Bob
Bob
Though it's also fairly standard now to virtualise when you have that much available - no single normal server role should need all of it.
@BGM honestly, VMware Server is probably a poor bet, if you're talking about the freeware product called VMware Server
Bob
Bob
@BGM And?
How is that a problem?
Oh, btw, ESXi free has a limit of 8 vCPUs per guest.
wait, I think Bob's onto something here
BGM
BGM
16:43
The Dell software technician told me that SQL license per core, so you have to buy a license for all the cores on the machine that hosts it.
So without the VM, I'd have to buy 6 licenses for my 12 cores.
Bob
Bob
@BGM There's several licence modes. There's also user CALs.
o____O
@Bob A friend of mine was introducing me to tmux and it reminded me of mosh a little bit
BGM
BGM
CAL only allows internal use. I want to allow some of the data to go toward my website.
at that price, I'd say, "screw it, I'm porting my software to PostgreSQL"
Bob
Bob
16:44
I'd also recommend looking at official docs, not Dell. Dell is fucking clueless half the time.
BGM
BGM
HEy! I got that paperclip guy again!
@BGM stop matching the regex, then :P
@Bob WOW -- that PDF came up fast -- our proxy must have that on perma-cache :P
BGM
BGM
I don't know enough to argue with the Dell fellow.
16:45
our DB guys probably refer to it 100 times a week -_-
BGM
BGM
I don't really want a VM at all.
Bob
Bob
@BGM He seems to be right in this instance.
@BGM Why not?
23
Q: When deploying a single server on new hardware, do you virtualize it or not?

TheCleanerThere are a few questions that I've found on ServerFault that hint around this topic, and while it may be somewhat opinion-based, I think it can fall into that "good subjective" category based on the below: Constructive subjective questions: * tend to have long, not short, answers * have a cons...

@allquixotic It's MS.
Always fast.
BGM
BGM
@bob complexity.
I only need a SQL database that's not limited like express.
So, anyway, here I am with VMWare, and I apparently haven't purchased a technical service contract.
Bob
Bob
VMware is somewhat pricey, unless you use the free version of ESXi
Which is, again, limited to 8 vCPUs per guest.
BGM
BGM
Well, I've already purchased VMware at Dell's recommendation.
Bob
Bob
16:50
.
Google says I am into "Australian Football".
BGM
BGM
It was like $400.
Bob
Bob
@BGM I recommend you go find someone to set it up for you -_-
BGM
BGM
@Bob Can it be so hard?
Bob
Bob
Not really, no, but if you have to ask such basic questions here (without mentioning you already purchased it, too), I don't hold much hope for you completing the rest of the process properly.
VMware is pretty well documented.
16:52
@BGM what is the actual name of the VMware product that you purchased?
"VMware Server" is freeware; it costs $0.
so logically, you purchased something else besides that.
BGM
BGM
Academic vSphere 5 Essentials Kit for 3 hosts Max 2 CPUs per host
Bob
Bob
Academic?
BGM
BGM
Anyway, what I wanted to find out is whether I have to use vCenter with it. From what I can figure out is that vCenter is like a hub for virtual servers, but I don't want a hub. It wants to use a domain, too, and I don't want another domain on my network.
Bob
Bob
@BGM No, you don't.
What do you mean "another domain on your network"?
BGM
BGM
16:53
@Bob - academic - that's what they gave me - we are a Catholic religious order.
Bob
Bob
What on earth are you talking about?
AD?
BGM
BGM
Yes, AD.
Bob
Bob
If it's AD, there would be no reason to create a new domain anyway.
In any case, no, vCenter is not necessary.
BGM
BGM
Yes there is reason, actually.
If you have more than one domain it forces users to specify which domain they want to log into.
Which means their logins "change".
And you do endless tech support.
Bob
Bob
@BGM Let me rephrase. There is no reason to create a new domain for VMware.
BGM
BGM
16:54
I have a sharepoint portal with 500 users that depend on loggin in via domain credentials.
OH, so THAT'S what this is all about. D:
BGM
BGM
@Bob - no reason - that's what I think too. Which is why I came here to see if anyone else thought so, too.
full MSFT stack... wow... Sharepoint, Win Server, SQL...
Bob
Bob
@BGM You don't even need vCenter
BGM
BGM
Thanks for confirming my suspicions.
Bob
Bob
16:55
Look up the relevant docs.
Hell, look at the product pages!
> VMware® vCenter Server™ provides a centralized platform for managing your VMware vSphere® environments. Automate and deliver a virtual infrastructure with confidence.
vCenter is mainly for managing multiple separate physical hosts
BGM
BGM
Yes, I realize what vCenter is for.
from the sound of it you only have one host
BGM
BGM
Problem is there is v-everything and all the names sound the same.
And when you search the vmware site for docs you get v-everything for results
Ha ha.
Bob
Bob
What you need to do is 1. (preferred) get someone who knows what they're doing to set things up, or 2. install ESXi on the server, install vSphere client on a workstation somewhere, connect to the server with it and set up a VM.
16:57
2 isn't too bad, but you'll have to wipe the disk clean -_-
how'd the RAID thing work out for you btw?
BGM
BGM
wipe the disk? Why would I do that?
I want to install vmware on the server don't I?
Bob
Bob
@allquixotic Sounds like a new server anyway?
@BGM ESXi installs its own operating system as the barebones physical OS, wiping out Windows, meaning your only Windows would be virtualized
BGM
BGM
@allquixotic The RAID0 is working perfectly.
@Bob I was helping him just a week or two ago setting up the OS
Bob
Bob
16:58
...
I have no words.
Anyway, you could've checked a box for Dell to set the whole thing up for you in the factory.
Bleh.
@Bob he's running hardware RAID0 with a nightly backup (his customer is fine with potentially losing a day's worth of data, and he's planning on having a cold spare)
Bob
Bob
... ... ...
So... needs SQL Server, can't spare the money for a RAID 5 or RAID 10 array?
