@CanadianLuke Groovy! I'll have to read it on my phone, work is still blocking your site. :S
oooh scratch that. It's unblocked now.
00:17
Yay
And vote yes to my Meta post!
lol, still getting rep for this answer:

A: How do I place blocks without breaking existing ones?

Michael FrankTry clicking the other mouse button.

@CanadianLuke Done.
@MichaelFrank in my country we have such a thing called Parody, A literary or artistic work that imitates the characteristic style of an author or a work for comic effect or ridicule. They are only seeing paradox.
There's nothing funny about what she wrote though.
I'm sure @Bob could possibly shed some light on the particular situation.
We have in place here laws that protect comedy.
and free speech.
Lawyers never get the joke though :-)
a lawyer in fact would thrust such claims at a person in this country too, but a judge would laugh them out of the courtroom. The lawyers basically know that would occur too, but it would not stop them from making thier own false claims of libility and criminality. Scaring the crap out of little kid messing around might just tick the whole country off at the company too, hurting them more than the original prank did.
So the corporation here would tread lightly and have 3 lawyers talk about it first :-)
01:11
Yes, but as you said that requires the presence of comic effect or ridicule. Releasing a 'false statement' that could have an impact on an entire region, not to mention the stock value of a company is not satyrical. :)
I agree it is a fine line, but bad art , is still art in this country.
Heck bad art still gets government money the same as good art :-)
So.... I want the new Microsoft Cortana on my desktop.
theonion.com this place writes most rediculous false statements as news regularly. If it was my onion i would be twisting the names around a bit , just to be sure. Like NutFlix and UnTied Airlines, but they dont. they probably have a lawyer on call.
Yes, but The Onion is obviously fake and people know it.
So is the web :-)
lol Prank may cost teen $765k or 10 years’ jail , yea because you can get 3/4 of a million out of most families :-) in ya dreams. bripay.com/prank-may-cost-teen-765k-or-10-years-jail
01:28
... is that your website?
Then of course the follow up comedy . It has been 10 years in prison now for Kudra Falla-Ricketts , has she learned not to duplicate company stationary?
After her releace she will be working for MEGAgas company for 18 years to pay off her debt. Some people view it as a return to slavery, but Kundra said "I am just doing the right thing for the big ass corporation, the investors who didnt even know its original value and my family, I dont really feel like a slave."
Stocks of the MegaGas company rose to unprecedented highs as they added Solar on top of all drilling , and refineries. Kundra 26 year old CEO of MegaGas said "it is a step in the right direction"
How did Kundra become CEO of Mega gas you ask? It all started 10 years ago, when in an undisclosed settlement over criminal herassment of a minor . . . .
02:48
@HackToHell I do not understand why the phone designs have not progressed toward cooling the chips physically. Why all these raw chips? Even the controller chip in a ssd could be synced to its frame. I agree with keeping them cool, but no you slow them down to do so :-(
Oh and slower also means less power. Give us some of the Pitri dish miracle battery tech they been talking about for 10+ years now. " I can play games for 10 hours a day now . . . Limping along at a unwatchable frame rate"
03:04
I have my new line of touch capable oven mits ready. Plus not only are they only $29.95 but you get 2 pairs, and as a special offer only if you call in the next 10 minutes, we will throw in the mobile gamers breakfast cooker Free.

@MichaelFrank I have no idea.
@Bob Ahh well
So... the only reference to Windows 9 is the URL? Link baiting much?
06:27
Been ages since I installed Windows 7 on a computer outside of work...
I picked up a Dell 755 from surplus today for $100... complete with a Q6600 and discrete graphics. Time for the parents to upgrade from the old P4.
Bob
Bob
@nhinkle Huh, nice.
Only 2 GB of RAM but the ol' P4 had DDR2 so I can just swap that over later.
Bob
Bob
Though, you might've been better off with power consumption with something more modern :P
True, but speedstep works pretty well, and a more modern machine can't be had for a mere $100
Electricity's cheap and mostly from renewable sources around here, so it makes more sense economically and environmentally to get the older, cheaper computer, than to buy a new computer or spend more money on a more recent used computer.
@nhinkle Q6600 FTW!
06:35
Yeeeaaaa!
That's what I'm running in my machine right now
How do you like it?
It's been running strong for about 6 years!
It's also currently OC'd to 3.2GHz, but Window has always thought it was 3.6 for some reason.
@nhinkle what discrete graphics?
@MichaelFrank Wow. That's quite the overclock!
@JourneymanGeek good question! Let's find out.
06:48
And eh outside hardware failure the core 2s still hold up well
Radeon HD 2400 XT, apparently
It's enough to run the accelerated desktop graphics in 7, which is all they really need.
Ahh. In this case better than nvidia
It was a university machine, so not exactly specced for gaming or anything
Although the new machines we're getting these days are pretty sweet. Core i7 quad-cores, 16 GB RAM, discrete workstation graphics, the faculty machines are even getting SSDs in the next refresh.
Was thinking reliability. You do remember the Swedish chef right?
06:52
8000 series nvidia cards tend to die
Iirc the ati you have was one step better than integrated (and that does 7 fine) and one step below a 8300gs
Ah. Yeah, I remember the 8000 series issue with the mobile chips, but I didn't think it affected their desktop series.
It did, just not as widespread
I'd just go with the discrete card for the power savings, but the mobo only has a single VGA port and they've got dual screens.
Bob
Bob
@JourneymanGeek They still work well, they just suck up power :P
Yeah. I'd run discrete if I had one onboard is best as a backup
06:58
Man. Ninite is the best.
07:48
Yeah, it is
@nhinkle Yea it's not bad eh? I needed a better heatsink to get that speed though

I managed to vinyl wrap the inside of my handphone case
Predictably I didn't document it.

@JourneymanGeek ...handphone?
yeah, the inside of the flippy moto G cover is ... cardboard
I hated it so I got some vinyl (actually half a meter... much more than I need) tried a few times...
then I realised you could use a hair dryer to shrink it to fit better
yeah, its still a bit WIP :p

It's blue!
yeah, they didn't have black ;p

@JourneymanGeek You could've just bought a case :P
Probably cheaper.

Q: When you kill someone, do you get his hat?

ThisMustBeHaloI don't know if it's just my own misinformation, but I've always believed that if you kill an enemy wearing a hat, you have a higher chance of receiving his hat in the next drop. Does this have a ring of truth to it, or am I just full of baloney?

I love arquade question titles

@Bob Maybe they mean "commands that originated from MS-DOS"?

@Bob Good question. We often delete stuff that SO would treat as "historically significant"

I don't care either way. I just don't want people to think that we're having fun on this site :\

Just worth mentioning, SU is directly behind (actually not far behind) from SO as being the most spammed site on the network. The system rejects about 60,000 posts per 7 day period, most in the form of suggested edits. — Tim Post ♦ 4 mins ago

seeking a solution for the following:

I been using +7 taskbar tweaker for options such as ability to customize group groups or unpin certain tabs from groups and option to display seconds In the time clock. 7+ Taskbar is lacking one feature. I have look extensively and I cannot find anything on nirsof that will work. Thought this utility might work on nirsoft but I was mistaken.

Currently the Windows 8 setting is to show taskbar on only one monitor or to show taskbar on all displays.

I don't want to "look up"! Making me work is bad UX!
Why is there a link on the "moved to", but not on the "moved from"?
800 x 600 alert, framesets, marquees, tables in all its glory, what's missing? Oh, I know! Image maps!
And Java applets!
@ThatBrazilianGuy and Flash!
@allquixotic No, there's Flash.
does it autoplay? (I have click to activate)
No <blink>, what a shame.
@allquixotic Autoplay? It's a menu we're talking about! Of course it does!

@CanadianLuke I'm watching it on Netflix now! :) I've sen the first two seasons.
It's a great show! I wish they didn't cancel it.
Me too! But they killed it in the last season, I don't see how they could possibly reboot it
@CanadianLuke Have you seen IT Crowd? :) It was a short one, only 4 seasons, 6 episodes each. But it was quite good. I LOL'd my pants down watching that.
18:18
Usually, just porn takes my pants off, but yes, I have seen the IT crowd... I work with 10 other guys who love that show too
Am I the only one in IT who thinks the IT Crowd isn't all that special?
Although I don't drink coffee, so maybe I'm not in the average opinion anyway
I agree, @ThatBrazilianGuy. It wasn't spectacular

@allquixotic Please don't ask to ask; if you simply ask your actual question, we will help you if we know the answer or can help you find it. This is much faster and simpler than asking if it's OK to ask. As a rule, it is always OK to ask in this channel. Please go ahead.

in cases of a router connected to a dsl modem, are most "dsl modems" NAT devices with NAT turned off?
22:27
@barlop Voting to close as question is too broad.
@MichaelFrank Go on, try to find the option
@barlop Best I can do is flag to moderator. :P
@MichaelFrank stop talking about it and do it already
@barlop nah, I'm sure they have larger fish to fry.
But in answer to your question, most dsl modems I've had have used NAT.
I asked a dubious question today that's probably more appropriate for chat.
22:40
@Matt You write " a medium-sized company well-established on one of the thriving US coasts" <-- ever think of writing a novel ?
like a 2000 page tomb?
@barlop lol
you might need to be a dictator or set yourself up as a god to get anybody to read it though
@barlop The first unpublished version of the question was in four volumes.
@Matt I'm glad you posted the concise version then. :)
@barlop @MichaelFrank So a short version of "How do I tactfully recommend hosting when a client's IT department is causing problems?" would suffice, sans-background? I'm struggling because it's open-ended no matter how I put it.
22:43
@Matt i'm not sure because i'm not that familiar with the aspects of the question.. (shared hosting, managed hosting, and the rest) that's not a fault with your question but with my knowledge. It may be possible to ask a much better question or two or even to answer it as it is, but I am not sure how due to my lack of knowledge.
@barlop Mr. @MichaelHampton nailed it, I think: I'm asking how to improve plumbing on the Titanic, while really there's a bigger problem to solve first.
@Matt I think you would probably need to build a case, with a list of things that are happening, and how they can be solved by moving to a hosted system.
well, you might not be able to solve the problem with the IT Department
damn, got so close to starring that!
hence you mention working around it
if your question boils down to what is a good managed hosting solution, they might consider it a shopping question (if they're anything like superuser) but that may be the question to ask..
22:48
@MichaelFrank Perhaps an audit with the client and the IT folks and the rest of the team, which will expose either a competency problem or my lack of awareness for other IT priorities.
does it cost the client substantially more to use a managed hosting solution?
I suppose they'd do it through you, and you'd hire the managed hosting..
@barlop I don't know yet without comparing options. I only know of one option right now, so some education is required.
Well. You can give them the client two options A)IT dept deal with it or B)You deal with it. (And You contact a managed hosting solution)..
But i'm just looking at this with logic not experience.
@barlop Not a bad idea for me to manage it but farm it out to a competent party. Still helpful, I appreciate it!
well, comparing managed hosting solutions is often not good for Stackexchange questions... How about you ask on serverfault chat
or here or both. Certainly serverfault chat is worth a shot.
22:51
anyone know anything about sql normalization
@barlop Thanks—I'll give it a shot! And thanks for applying some sensible logic and helping me out.
@Hellovart about 15 years ago I did some database normalization on paper. And I know a little bit of SQL but not combining the two!
@Matt no prob
@barlop actually im doing database normalization on paper
well, I did first normal form, and second normal form.. But third normal form i'm not sure I was sure about, the book wasn't good on that
@barlop do you know anything about multi-valued dependency
@barlop that's before 1nf
22:53
@Hellovart I don't know the term but I get the jist I think.
like if you have two entites, and it's a 1-many relationship, you get one entity to point to the other, and you have to get it the correct way round
otherwise you'd end up with multiple values in a "cell"(or whatever they call a box in a table)
@barlop wow that's confusing, can i give you an example of a table
yeah
if i just get the UNF(unnormalized form) i can solve for everything else
but i cant determine multi vlaue dependency becuase my professor is an inept and incoherent fool
heh..
well I don't know the terms like UNF..
I wonder if that is already in UNF?
or maybe UNF is just lots of duplication
hold on ill write what i think unf is, and i think it is
22:57
