Just watched a great skiing movie in glorious HD.. Was great

2 hours later…
03:53
hmm
@WilliamHilsum: are the modern day intel heatsinks really THIS big? legitreviews.com/article/1655/2 (or anyone one else who has built a core i system recently ;p)
@Journeyman 0.0 that's just... Huge.
I can't imagine using such a thing

2 hours later…
05:54
@SimonSheehan: files.backblaze.com/blog_pics/pod20-photo-motherboard.jpg this is what a 'regular' heatsink looks like, i thought ;p

Q: Our security auditor is an idiot, how do I give him the information he wants?

A. ThrowawayA security auditor for our servers has demanded the following within two weeks: A list of current usernames and plain-text passwords for all user accounts on all servers A list of all password changes for the past six months, again in plain-text A list of "every file added to the server from re...

lol
i read that. I'm wonder what he's smoking

2 hours later…
08:40
spot the difference!
Judging from the Gravatar, how can you even register twice with the same e-mail address?
08:53
they aren't registered, @slhck
@Sathya ah, okay :P
But still, why two separate users with the same Gravatar?
probably lost the cookie
merged the 2
09:07
Hey everyone
How're we this fine day?
lazy @Mokubai
Lazy? Sounds like time to play a game! :D
a game of thermonuclear war?
the only way to win is not to play at all....
had a headdesk moment I had my external sound card set up incorrectly
09:19
How do you set up a sound card incorrectly?
and the thing with those is.. it sounds off, but its VERY hard to pinpoint it, especially since i mucked up my right ear grinding out a screw ;p
@Mokubai: it was set up to 16 bit. it supports 24 bit
You ground out a screw in you ear? ewwwww
and since it dosen't downsample, it sounds worse
naw, i ground out a screw without hearing protection
(or something like that. set up properly it beats the crap out of onboard sound, to me.)
My onboard is good enough, though I would like a dedicated card as they tend to sound a bit crisper
most onboards i've heard arn't great - if i built a box for myself, prolly would get an asus xonar on it
and i got this when i had a particularly craptastic sound card on my laptop
09:24
Looks neat
its also useful if i need RCA out for some reason out a laptop (though the much bulkier recording gear does that too)
The realtek audio I have is passable...
@Mokubai: for lossy, yeah
the new ones might be better.
but when you start playing with lossless, and things like ASIO, not really, IMO ;p
For professional audio I'd suspect it may not be the best, but for general gaming and stuff it works fine with a decent pair of headphones...
anyone got a link to setting up a dns server?
09:29
hmm
@Mokubai well, yeah about to launch dirt 3 ;P
recursive or authoritiative?
any any specific one?
@Sathya Arch Linux usually has good guides... wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/DNS_with_bind
howtoforge is what i tend to use howtoforge.com/howtos/dns?from=20
thank ye, @JourneymanGeek & @Mokubai
back later. have fun.
09:31
@Sathya Was going to ask, you a regular racing gamer?
@Mokubai yep..
@Mokubai raptr.com/sathyabhat & xfire.com/profile/sathyabhat .. though both have not been very accurate.
I saw Grid2 on offer the other day and was wondering if the Dirt/Grid series was any good
Grid 2?
there is not Grid 2.... yet
Ah, might have been that one then, bad memory
@Mokubai either Grid or Dirt 2.
09:37
Yeah, Grid looks like the one
both the series have a good mix of arcadish-sim dynamics. It might trip few folks.
Been getting in to Test Drive Unlimited 2 lately, it's not a bad racer tbh
Anyway, I'll let you go play :)
09:52
... and I thought I was editing a lot :P
10:17
...I don't suppose there is an alt.tech-support.recovery.asshole-users?
I swear I'm not going back to ##linux for a looong time...
heh what's been going on?
lol
on freenode?
Its a horrible place for tech support in general
Which is why I never ask for support in there. :D
;p
#ubuntu was useless. that's one of the reasons i ended up here
even if i don't run it at the moment ;p
(I often help others on ##linux though)
anyway, just remembering a recent "discussion" on how kernel/Documentation/filesystems/ext2.txt is not a reliable enough source on the endianness of ext4 superblocks. :\
10:23
i hang around foobar&grill sometimes ;p
thanks for the edit to clean up my formatting slhck
Not a thing @Brandon – I always hope people don't mind! :)
I just sent Spotify some fun feedback about how non-intuitive, non-standard, and annoying I find the process of exiting their client to be. :)
I've seen that in many Windows applications though
10:30
electronics.stackexchange.com/questions/17302/… this belongs on SU. I've only seen something like this once.. cat peed on the LCD screen of someone i know...
hopefully they'll fix it
eh, least you can use that ;)
can't use last fm for free or spotify, or google music or amazon or....
@JourneymanGeek Same here.. sucks
speaking of which.. utorrent's classic web client is borked with the new version. they also have a newfangled cloud one ... which also dosen't work
yeah, it actually makes sense in most the other applications that behave that way though... It's kinda hard to receive IMs or calls if Google Talk or Skype aren't open in the background
10:34
@Brandon: It still annoys me. Its non standard behaviour ;p
the only reason i can see for spotify to not close is if they're trying to keep caching music and/or ads
Yeah, but if you accidentially close a music player instead of minimizing, you notice that, so not an excuse
@Brandon True that, but I always had the impression that's what the Minimize button was for in Windows... the app might then minimize to tray
@grawity: x closes foobar2k ;p
and if you click X, you might get a dialog ("Do you really want to close?" – [ ] don't show this again)
10:35
@slhck agreed... I pointed all of this out in my feedback to them =)
as it should work
@JourneymanGeek: true (in default configuration, anyways) -- and so it does in about every music player I've used.
ugh... those dialogs annoy me if they don't have the "don't show this again" option... like OpenPandora's
lol
@Brandon: ANY non standard UI, unless necessary, annoys the hell out of me
agreed @JourneymanGeek :P
10:37
granted, i spent about an hour in total, getting pidgin and xchat to fit in with my black theme....
Amen to that @journey
unfortunately, I wouldn't be surprised if the answer to the question I posted is "no, there's no way to override that behavior"... at least short of any crazy hacks.
Well, I'm off to bed. Nite everyone.
hf @Brandon!
@Sathya which mode of connection is faster .. bridging or PPoE ?
it doesn't matter.
At least one device will have to use PPPoE anyway
yes ... and what does cell rate mean ?
hm, I think I won a "worst upload speed" badge in that site.
11:06
I do not get it why my ping is less with US over India
@HackToHell not sure I follow you.
@Sathya undersea cables have greater speed over messy connections in India ?
Or maybe just the machine in India you're pinging has a poor connection
undersea cables & messy connections.. still not a clue.
India got the slowest connection speeds :( the global average is 10 Mbps
11:15
I was stuck with 512 kbps in the middle of Europe until last month... (they upgraded some stuff, increased to 4 Mbps.)
Meanwhile, the guys in the cities can get 40 Mbps for the same price. I'm jealous.
@grawity unlimited usage ?
Yeah. I suppose that's the up side of it
@grawity how much do you pay ?
I too have unlimited usage plan
37 LTL, which would be...
...where the hell is Google Currency Converter when I need it?!
$15 USD acc to Google
11:18
"37 LTL in USD" didn't work for me :/
I just typed in 37 LTL...
About 680 INR
pretty nice deal.
although the rates are not directly comparable
nah, "Nice deal" is 300 Mbps for $33 >_>
@Sathya seriously I pay well over that 750 for just around 0.80 Mbps
@grawity those speeds are unknown to us >_>
I have never experienced speeds > 24 Mbps(At HCL )
11:22
workplaces cap connections, else some moron will saturate the entire network
@Sathya lol
too much torrenting
Slow connections are still tolerable... upgrades and other miracles happen occassionally, anyway.
Filtering, or the crazy usage limits they have in USA, are harder :/
@grawity yep no unlimited plans in USA .. and no filtering here @ india atleast my ISP does Airtel do that @Sathya ?
11:41
eh, 4 mbps for me, tho there's a pretty neat 50 mbps plan we may switch to at some point
we do have a transparent proxy setup to block about 100 sites that messes with ip address detection tho
in singapore, natch ;p
11:57
...*sigh*. Adding a sleep.d hook to reset the WLAN card was not enough; apparently it has to be done after a delay of 1½ seconds. So much for fast resume... On the bright side, at least it worked out of the box.
Hhmn, I disagree about Freenode. I get the majority of my problems sorted out there.
although usually with the same sets of people
And it's immediate.
12:39
wow, not bad, 8 MBit/s when you're promised 25! >_>
12:59
@slhck Is that cable?
@paradroid Yes it is, now I got 9-10 something
As 25mbit seems low for VDSL and it seems too high for ADSL2
Juts got it connected or something?
Already got it since 2008 or so
originally it was 10 MBit/s, then they upgraded it for free, which was nice
If it has gone down recently, they must have increased the contention ratio
BT Infinity VDSL here :) 40/10 uncapped
heh that is sick
13:04
upload rate goes down during the day, to as low as 6mbit, which sucks
but it's a bit hard to get a good connection when you're in the middle of the city.. the outskirts have up to 100 (w/ fibre)
download stays pretty consistant at around 37mbit
that's not too bad, is it?
(I mean, in comparison!)
100mbit? that must be FTTP.
very few places have there here
MegaBytes, Megabits, millibits.
13:07
I suppose it's FTTP.. too bad though you can't get anything similar here. There's even only one provider, you don't have a choice...
13:27
What is going on with this advert? It has an Apple sign on it, suggesting you can run MacOS apps on Windows Azure, but I cannot find any information on this, and how could it be running on non-Apple hardware anyway?
Oh, iPhone
13:41
It seems that Apple's iCloud actually uses Windows Azure and Amazon Web Services for hosting
@paradroid afaik it's using them as a load balancer, I might be wrong
@Sathya Not according to Wikipedia chir.ag/wiki/icloud
Morning everyone
hmm indeed. shrug knowing Apple, they'll change it sooner or later
13:47
This guy flagged my answer as correct... Then seems to have put a sort of contradictory comment? Odd
1
A: Which UNIX or Linux distribution works on a Dell M5010 without having to compile any drivers?

Simon SheehanYou last tried it 6 months ago, and things have changed since then. Your best bet would be to get an Ubuntu or Fedora LiveCD, and then booting into that. If you are able to use your wireless on the LiveCD, then you should be fine to do a full system installation.

He seems generally confused
Indeed yes
> I do not plan on paying for drivers
say what.
> Also I will not do this and this is not a solution if it does not include drivers.
that's arrogance.
Yet he flagged my answer as right, which boggles my mind
yeah.
I was looking for flags, but I found none, confused me when @SimonSheehan mentioned "... flagged...
13:58
Marked my answer*
Haha. @Sathya your moderator instincts are kicking in ;)
hi @Jacob
@SimonSheehan hehe :)
@Sathya Hello I'm currently defaulting over here from serverfault :)
welcome to Root Access. :)
@Sathya There, a flag! (For real!)
Welcome to the club @Jacob ;)
@SimonSheehan Thanks

1 hour later…
15:08
So what's everyone up to on this fine day?
Ugh, programming C++ :/
and you, are you surviving the heat wave?
@slhck well temperatures down to 39 here, which feels cold compared to 49 ;) so it's all good with a pool and some AC
Going to go read outside, be back in a bit! Some shade finally
@SimonSheehan Well that's okay then – go you and have some real life! :D
15:23
@slhck and damn it's hot out. Back to reading on the couch a bit ;)
The shade improves by the afternoon so I'll Probably be out again then
lol sounds like what I would've done :P
Haha. I do like the outdoors but this is a bit much :P
Saw the final Harry potter and decided to reread the book now
I've never seen any of the movies, only read the first book many many years ago when it first came out
@SimonSheehan Harry Potter? You reminded me of this:
epic laugh
@SimonSheehan messing with bind :-s
15:33
@slhck been reading them since I was 6 ;) huge fan of the series
@Sathya and how's that working out so far?
screwy.
No offense guys: your internets are teh badz :)
@Sathya why are you messing around with bind though? :p
@SimonSheehan remember my vps setup
15:39
@Sathya oh yeah - why did you switch to it from shared?
@SimonSheehan costs is one, consolidation is another
@Jacob tell me about it :/
@Sathya are you having issues with Bind?
@Jacob yep, I am..
@Sathya OK :) check the speedwave
@Sathya Like?
@Jacob oh I did, I'll all J
15:41
@Sathya What were you paying for shared compared to VPS?
@Jacob first point I don't know what the heck I'm doing :P I've setup the zones & named.conf - trying to ping the ns I just setup seems to fail ( on the server itself)
@SimonSheehan $60 for the shared, $20 for the VPS
@Sathya whats your domain?
@Jacob sathyabh.at
@Sathya $60 for shared? That's outrageous. I pay $10 a month for unlimited everything on a shared hostgator plan
Huh? Shared hosting costing more than a VPS?
15:43
@SimonSheehan $60/yr ;)
Ooh. Wow, $20 a year for a VPS? What's the specs on that puppy?
is it that really cheap one in california?
@Sathya whats the VPS IP? I get an A record back
@paradroid BuyVM.net
15:44
@Jacob sorry right now it's still pointing to the old ns setup.
@Sathya what do your Confs look like?
@Jacob the zone conf?
@Sathya yes

15:46
Damn, $20 for that is dirt cheap. You found a good deal @Sathya.
I just use Rackspace, partly because they have UK based servers
@SimonSheehan they currently have a deal ar $14/yr
Heh, wow. I'll still keep using Hostgator though. My parents like it, and they have great service
@Sathya drop your Cnames, use A records
he's not using CNAMEs
15:50
@Jacob well, dropped, didn't help :(

@Jacob done, still the same
(haven't added backup MX, will do once this is done)
15:58
@Sathya works for me
@Sathya are you trying to lookup on the server?
@Sathya WAIT I know why
@Sathya Instead of ping use dig @127.0.0.1 (domain here)
that way it'll query BIND and not another server

but now, pizza's here, time for dinner
16:09
Mmm pizza. Enjoy it @Sathya!
thanks!
and Top Gear to watch!
later!
@Sathya US or UK?
UK, the US one sucks
@Sathya :(
Top gear, fun. You've got quite the night going on then ;)
16:19
yep, thanks @SimonSheehan!
16:31
Gonna see about making sone grilled cheese now..
17:16
Does anyone know the difference between LED and LCD? which is better?
Hi all
@slhck Are you using OS X Lion right now?
@DanielBeck Nope, I can't switch yet — still have some software in use that's not going to work
@SimonSheehan On TVs?
@slhck OK thanks anyway
And here we go again, yet another Finder crash...
hm, doesn't sound good
It turns out I am not capable of learning that upgrading software early is a stupid idea :)
17:23
@slhck yep - were replacing an old CRT TV :p
@DanielBeck Do you have a backup? :P
@Daniel I'm hearing a lot of finder issues and lag on it
@SimonSheehan LEDs are better afaik, I have one and I love it.
@slhck Sure
@SimonSheehan LCD(Liquid Crystal Display) (Light emitting Diode)
LEDs are sharper
Less prone to "memory" or "ghosting"
but are more expensive
17:25
They don't seem ridiculously more expensive though.
@SimonSheehan My machine even froze this afternoon for no good reason… x.0 software... sigh
@Daniel Call apple support and demand patches! :p
@DanielBeck Exactly why I'm waiting
Anyone else using OS X Lion who could verify a bug in Safari for me?
@DanielBeck second problem Chrome +FF>Safari :)
17:27
@slhck Yeah that's what some else said too, I'll check out prices. I'd love to use my PS3 in HD more than anything xD. Analog cable though, all the way
@Jacob If you can tell me how to download any file in Chrome, sure.
@Jacob At least I don't use my Mac that much anymore, for home use my iPad has almost replaced it actually...
@DanielBeck what do you mean?
@Jacob You encounter a web server that doesn't properly serve the .rar file type. You want to download the file using Firefox or Chrome, but both of them just load the tens-of-megabytes file for displaying binary crap. What do you do?
@JourneymanGeek Sorry for the very late response - I have never seen one that big... if you look back a while ago, I was wondering how they can work as they are now so small!
I have even seen a few engineering samples, but, never that big!
@SimonSheehan Check for latency though, my Samsung LED has a dedicated game mode and it still feels a bit sluggish
17:31
@DanielBeck Use Curl (terminal)
@Jacob I rest my case.
@slhck I've had good success with Sony, so I'm checking them out
@SimonSheehan The video quality is excellent though – heck, I work in this field and I'm very sensitive to that :P
@Jacob I don't particularly want to use Safari, but I find all the other options lacking in many areas, and not just UI design.
@DanielBeck One thing I haven't looked at yet: does the installer create a permanent partition on the drive?
17:35
@slhck Good point. Hey, anythings a step up from this monsters CRT ;)
@slhck Yes, 650MB recovery partition
@SimonSheehan Well I wish I still had my CRT for the SNES
@slhck
$ diskutil list
/dev/disk0
#: TYPE NAME SIZE IDENTIFIER
0: GUID_partition_scheme *500.1 GB disk0
1: EFI 209.7 MB disk0s1
2: Apple_HFS Servus10 HD 499.2 GB disk0s2
3: Apple_Boot Recovery HD 650.0 MB disk0s3
@DanielBeck Oh, okay, that's not as big as I thought
@slhck Can't you still use it? :s
17:37
@SimonSheehan I theoretically could, but it looks like cr*p :/
@slhck Ouch then :/ You can actually pickup little 17' CRTs here for like $50. Me and my dad found one at the grocery store :p
@SimonSheehan lol yeah I guess I can pick some up for free at the local waste dump :P
@slhck Yep. But with a PS3 I'm a little dissapointed by the CRT display. I've got a PS3, Wii, and Ps2 on it. I'd like the PS3 On HDMI, Wii on component, and ps2 can just use A/V
@SimonSheehan Sounds like a plan! I've played a PS3 on a 20yr old CRT once, wasn't that great :D
@slhck indeed, not nearly as fun. When my parents aren't around I like to move the PS3 onto the HDTV and it's absolutely stunning :D
But yeah, CRTs are a bit power hungry, so LED would be good
17:45
Oh damn I almost forgot to watch Breaking Bad's S04E01!
Be back in a couple of minutes too
hf @SimonSheehan, I'll be back later
@slhck Is there an "Event Log" in 10.6's AppleScript Editor?
