From the beautiful landscapes, to the immersive sound-design that makes you almost smell the fumes as you use your ®Stihl chainsaw to effectively harvest lumber.

Although the first-person aspects of the games are great and feature the most fluid controls i've ever witnessed, the game truly shines in management mode. The game accurately represents the daily dealings of a small lumberyard, as a 17 year veteran of that business i know what im talking about.

jeff was pretty generous then wow

@allquixotic he's given a lot of his stuff away for free
@allquixotic he just gave it, I'd recommended him a new router
so he tells me "I no longer need this, you wants?"
@Sathya too bad he didn't leave his wifi password in there; if he used the same one in the new router you might've been able to get inside his wireless network by going to his house, then use firesheep to get his SE token, then use that to login as him and do bad things ;p not that you would do bad things... but it would be a nice way to prove a point about the lack of https on the site :P

reading that paper on acoustic extraction of RSA keys's FAQ...
> Send your server to a colocation facility, with a good microphone inside the box. Then acoustically extract keys from all nearby servers.

@Bob are you sure they can't be filtered out?
I would appreciate any ideas.
Bob
Bob
@winterswift not certain, no, but they're very loud
and you have a lot of them
not to mention the many different machines
@Bob obviously, I just mean if it's making the acoustic patterns there might be some scary sound-engineering way to remove it
I wouldn't really know
being a non-acoustic-engineer
Bob
Bob
with a single machine you can analyse, maybe
with a warehouse full? ehhhh
17:12
yeah, sort of what I thought
seems a tad far-fetched
@winterswift basically, as long as the fans don't emit large amounts of sound in the same frequency band as the key data leaked from the CPU, you can safely ignore the fans sound with a highpass / lowpass filter
so the defense against this attack is to add a little chip to your server that deliberately emits false signatures on the same band with the same pattern
@allquixotic that was the other thing I was wondering about, but I haven't actually read it fully
Bob
Bob
> Q12: Won't the attack be foiled by loud fan noise, or by multitasking, or by several computers in the same room?
Usually not. The interesting acoustic signals are mostly above 10KHz, whereas typical computer fan noise and normal room noise are concentrated at lower frequencies and can thus be filtered out. In task-switching systems, different tasks can be distinguished by their different acoustic spectral signatures. Using multiple cores turns out to help the attack (by shifting down the signal frequencies). When several computers are present, they can be told apart by spatial localizati
again, not sure how accurate that would be
ah, hm.
sound is just another type of EM
with a very sensitive antenna (microphone) and the right processing algorithms (and time to let them run) even a very faint signal can be isolated from an enormous amount of background noise
Bob
Bob
17:21
@allquixotic EM? no
sound is physical waves
@Bob ah yes, i always forget about that... but it behaves like EM, regardless
Bob
Bob
well, in that you have waves, yes
though I thought EM was transverse and sound was longitudinal? not that that will necessarily affect these attacks
the methods of analysis that these guys are using are not all that different from what we'd use to find a faint wifi signal in a cluttered 2.4 GHz spectrum, for instance
it's the same math
just gotta know what you're looking for
what they've effectively done is identified a predictable "signal" amidst what we'd normally consider to be just noise
whereas most normal things we consider to be signal are well-recognized protocols like wifi and BT and natural language (speech)
I think the similarity here is more in signal processing than the nature of the wave though
for sure

Q: Quick file search for text

UltraI was forced to use Visual Studio and wave off my favourite Notepad++. > The drag-and-drop feature of OLE is primarily a shortcut for copying and pasting data. When you use the Clipboard to copy or paste data, a number of steps are required.
