Nope. That's a RPM package.
i deleted like 50 MB from my USB stick
Bob
Bob
Congrats?
First I moved the files from USB stick to my laptop
So the only place where it was .... was on the HDD of the laptop
Now I want to recover the data
From where should I try to recover it?
HDD of laptop or USB stick?
Which one has a higher probability of recovering?
The USB memory stick is FAT32
HDD is NTFS.... old one... not SSD
Bob
Bob
@EinsteinsGrandson So, why isn't it there anymore?
I deleted it from the HDD also
;o)
Bob
Bob
17:06
...
bangs head into wall
First I moved it from USB to HDD
Then I deleted it from the HDD
Bob
Bob
...
So I can recover it either from USB stick or HDD
Bob
Bob
If you have written any data to the media since deletion, consider it permanently gone.
Which software should I use?
I didn't
At least on USB stick .....
Bob
Bob
17:08
If you have booted, hell, even continued to use the system on the HDD, consider it permanently gone.
OK
From HDD it's gone
But USB stick can save me
right?
Bob
Bob
As with all data recovery: step 1: take an image of the disk
then work on the image, or preferably a copy of the image
never ever ever ever write to the media you are trying to recover from
ok
and which software should I use?
;o)
which one is the best?
;o)))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))
Bob
Bob
dd can take a backup image, though there are other methods
no
I mean for recovering
I will just try to recover from USB straight away
Bob
Bob
17:10
...
why do I even try
;o)
So what's wrong?
I don't need to do the backup ot the USB stick ... do I ?
backup image
Bob
Bob
@JourneymanGeek there's got to be some explanation why no one ever takes the backup image advice
well, very few
You are right
For example my HDD is like 8 years old
Should I do the backup?
When it stops working one day, I will commit suicide
Bob
Bob
what the hell has the age of the HDD got to do with it?
;o))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))
Bob
Bob
17:13
..
That in 8 years you have a lot of photos on it
Photos you made in 8 years
Bob
Bob
if you want me to name a program, I have briefly attempted to use GetDataBack in the past
and other documents...
Bob
Bob
no guarantee of what will happen
I'm going to sleep
Bob
Bob

lrn2backup
ok, thank you
Bob
Bob
I'd also highly recommend mounting the flash drive under Linux in read-only mode, making an image, then mounting the image and working on that.
Because you never know what programs will decide to write/modify data on any given drive
Bob
Bob
and any written data has the chance to permanently overwrite 'deleted' data
@njallam Welcome to Root Access chat for Super Users! Please don't ask if you can ask or if anyone's around; just ask your question, and if anyone's free and interested they'll help.
17:19
BTW, what if I want to backup my data on some Cloud storage?
How much do I pay for 100 GB per year?
@JohnCavil -_-
Can I no longer make a sneaky entrance?
Bob
Bob
@njallam the bot should remember after the first time
@Bob Kay :P

If you'd prefer to roll your own and just pay for storage: aws.amazon.com/glacier/pricing
@EinsteinsGrandson You seem like doing unnecessary work for writing this emoticon. Just write like this and save yourself some typing. :) or ;) without "o" which resembles nose.

@Bob I hope they don't use tape media as storage?
Bob
Bob
@Boris_yo I believe they do, why?
Huh. Apparently not:
> however all publicly available information (including communications with Amazon itself) appears to support the claim that Glacier is backed by inexpensive commodity hard drives and not tape.
$0.01 per GB / month from Amazon.... that's like 1 USD per month for 100 GB
Bob
Bob
> This confusion is exacerbated by the fact that Glacier experiences archive retrieval delays similar access delays to that of tape-based systems (3-5 hours before archives are available).
That's very very cheap!!!!!!!!!
Bob
Bob
@EinsteinsGrandson But keep in mine the retrieval intricacies. And you'd have to set it up yourself, as opposed to something like crashplan (automatic, difference only backups)
Glacier retrieval is.. weird.
You can retrieve a certain % of your storage for free each month, after that it gets somewhat expensive /GB
Good for long term storage
Not so good if you're anticipating pulling data down often
Bob
Bob
Amazon Glacier is an online file storage web service that provides reliable storage for data archiving and backup. Glacier is part of the Amazon Web Services suite of cloud computing services, and is designed for long-term storage of data that is infrequently accessed and for which retrieval latency times of 3 to 5 hours are acceptable. Storage costs are a consistent $0.01 per gigabyte per month, which is substantially cheaper than their own Simple Storage Service (S3) service. Amazon hopes this new service will move businesses from on-premises tape backup drives to cloud-based backup ...
> In one example, a user stored 15GB of data in Glacier, retrieved 693MB for testing, and ended up being charged for 126GB due to retrieval rate calculation.
o.O
@Bob Expensive due to compounding effect of data retrieval?
Bob
Bob
@Boris_yo The most you retrieve in a single hour is multiplied by the hours in a month for the cost...
At least according to the Wikipedia article.
@Bob I am not getting this one. How can one retrieve more than he does at cloud? Was he charged for bandwidth too?
Bob
Bob
@Boris_yo Take the retrieval rate
Say, 693MB/hour
multiply by hours/month
17:35
I can slow my internet connection so that I don't download more than 100 MB per hour
i heart from a friend that I can find very cheap cloud storage in China
Bob
Bob
It doesn't look at amount per month - it looks at the highest amount per hour reached at any time in that month, and assumes that that highest rate was being used for every hour in them month
@EinsteinsGrandson And, what? Take a thousand hours to retrieve all of it?
like 10 USD a year for unlimited storage and unlimited retrieving every day
Bob
Bob
Sure. Go for that if you want.
I'd not trust that at all
1000 hours ? not... maybe like 100 hours to rerieve 100 GB
@Bob Because 0.01c sounds too cheap and should raise suspicion of savvy users.
Bob
Bob
17:37
@EinsteinsGrandson 100 GB is 100,000 MB. At 100MB/hour, that's 1000 hours.
What do they do with my data in Cloud Storage company like Amazon?
Bob
Bob
@Boris_yo That's just the charge for holding the data there.
@EinsteinsGrandson Store it.
Simple.
but normally with high redundancy
what if I have business ideas in my data?
I mean I believe they scan it for sure
Say if I want to change my primary Microsoft account alias, and I have it linked to a Windows Phone and two Windows 8 installs. What do I need to take into consideration?
Bob
Bob
@EinsteinsGrandson Eh. If you have osmething you really need to keep 'secret', encrypt it. or leave it at home.
Scan it?
Sure.
Keyword search for "SECRET BUSINESS IDEAS!!!!!1111ONE"
17:39
after the PRISM project was revealed I don't trust anybody on the internet anymore
Bob
Bob
Then leave it at home.
Personally, I don't like the concept of a 'cloud', marketing buzzword that it is.
But you did ask.
What if I have pictures of dead bodies of people I killed in my data on Cloud?
Bob
Bob
@njallam What do you mean, change?
Will they find out ?
Bob
Bob
@EinsteinsGrandson Do you?
17:40
Maybe I do
@Bob Change the primary alias on my account to another one linked to my account
Bob
Bob
@njallam No clue :S
@Bob Okay, that's fine
I'm just gonna change it anyway and hope nothing breaks too badly
Bob
Bob
anyway, ima sleep now
cya all
@njallam good luck
I mean I can have thousand of mp3 from torrents, software like Adobe Acrobat, Photoshop...
17:41
@Bob Thanks, I'll probably need it :P
Then they can send it to police and I go to jail
Pictures of naked children - my nephew and niece.... They will say I am an pedophile
I saw a naked little girl in a mall yesterday
Which is probably a crime in the US
Not in Europe
What I wanted to say is .... Once I put my data on Cloud..... The company that is offering the service for me.... can use this data against me!
17:56
I recovered the data
It was easy
I used the good old Easy Recovery 6.03 from the year 2003
It never lets me down!!!!!!!
Recovers deleted data easily and pretty quickly
@EinsteinsGrandson so you want to store your ill gotten goods on their server? Will the password be Open Sesame
18:27
HTC One for $70! Shut up and take my money! focalprice.com/MH0729S/…
what is it with china and cheap clones cnn.com/2013/08/16/world/asia/china-zoo-dog-lion/… :-)
@Psycogeek So they not only fake clones but zoo animals. Neat!
@Boris_yo sort of funny we both posted Clones at the same time.
@Boris_yo It quite clearly only says "One" rather than "HTC One"... I sure there's no way anyone could confuse the two :)
@Mokubai This is a trap for non-savvy people.
@Mokubai They don't want to get into trademark violation.
18:39
@Boris_yo is that stuff there used also? how do they have a Windows CE device still?
@Psycogeek What device has Windows CE? That fake "One" phone?
@Boris_yo the gps devices, mabey i just did not know that CE lived forever.
@Psycogeek Our destinies intertwined?
oooooh quad core, wonder how many android apps are multithreaded?
19:14
"We should understand that the Scriptures, both of the Old Testament and the New, were written by men; they are the word of God but written by men. Giving absolute belief to each of its words, perceiving each one to be absolutely divine, is an exercise in naiveté, as is confusing the metaphorical nature of countless words and passages in the Bible and interpreting them in an exclusively literal way. That is a nearsightedness that limits us."
@Psycogeek Do you think this would work? lifehacker.com/5583151/…
