@JourneymanGeek use windows 8?
yup
lol
@sabgenton: ahh, I have my eyes on a extremely cheap netbook that runs a via core
have you played with file history?
vs the windows 7 one
k
been meaning to, but it dosen't really seem like something I would use
01:47
I think file backups should replace image backups
well
or just back a decent thing like tar but for windows
that preserves ACLs
From what I hear you have to turn file history of to use the older Windows 7 VHD backup system then then turn it back on
(if you want to uses both)
But as much as the internet say you have to do that I see now in disk management you can just click and make a one of VHD
so maybe that and file history is the way to go
I'm about to trial the old window 7 way see if its managing tools are necessary VS a one off VHD and file history

@LewsTherin Welcome to Root Access chat for Super Users! Please don't ask if you can ask or if anyone's around; just ask your question, and if anyone's free and interested they'll help.
Ok the internet was right I was wrong you have to switch back and forth.
You can create (blank) and mount VHD's in device manager, neat trick but you can't clone to them without the back up restore tool.

Q: Migration request superuser → AskDifferent

daniel AzuelosI think that it would be a nice feature to have a choice to suggest a migration from: superuser to: AskDifferent For example this question: How to change screen resolution on OS X might receive more answer on the AskDifferent discussion group.

@Bob how are the fingers there ?
I remember the first human flesh fry from soldering at the kitchen table. The hot pencil soldering gun was about to drop on My Moms Linolium, OMG! I caught the soldering gun mid air and had it back up on the table in a few miliseconds. Good thing the precious floor, did not get damaged.

ha ha, how is that going to work? Tell the user to go to the Chat for conversations superuser.com/questions/633011/… Like this mess i made. and the user cannot Go to chat.
` the question is indeed "local" to the users computer, although there is a possibility to make something Like that, a searchable question. Otherwise and probably anyways the user would be better off somewhere else.
"" how to tell if your PSU will "" 1 paragraph on how to check, and 2 paragraphs on how the Different PSUs output power?

@Bob wow, so now can i ignore the layers of bitcoin Info that said it was more secure than my bank? Or does this mean that android is going to start getting 100 security updates a year?
Bob
Bob
Uh, no.
uh no which one?
Bob
Bob
Both.
The way Android is structured, it's a pain to update (which is a bad thing (TM), really).
@Bob oh, I did not know. they cant just patch a mobile device? gotta flash it?
Bob
Bob
13:03
A flaw in Android's RNG would also impact, say, (traditional) banking that relies on SSL. It's not a problem with Bitcoin, which makes the (quite reasonable) assumption that the private key is secure, but rather a problem with Android and/or the implementation of certain apps.
@Psycogeek I've never heard of partial Android patches. It might be possible?
The problem is, every patch is (apparently) vendor-specific. Imagine having to wait for HP or Dell to release security patches to you.
@Bob Myself i will not use a computer for banking, and i would avoid further one that does so wirelessly. Which is rather odd, because the bank now is probably floating my same info aound in 100 vulnerable ways and wirelessly too :-)
Bob
Bob
The last time I did an update from Samsung, well, I have no point of comparison but it looked a bit like a firmware flash (boot into loading bar).
@Psycogeek Well, the only possible risk in-transit assuming secure SSL would be a government. Which is precisely what Bitcoin's proponents consider a problem with banks - they're government-controlled.
But i do use paypal, that feeds off a bank account, made for that purpose (like empty :-)
@Bob Banks controlled by corporations , crooks and all , just as bad as goverment. I have done some work for people who had the banks "floating paper" around in miserable disorganised and utterly wrong .
The reliance on computers for the organisation (which all read different things) the malibility of the paper in the computer, which was Re-made with errors to a new Database entry. etc etc. It was a far worse mess than the paper work on a slobs desk :-)
hey

O.O
but after I moved the server and booted it up it refuses to mount the network drives on the NAS ><

ooh, not cool
@flote ohoh, so did they put in a patch for the security now? :-)
13:19
CIFS VFS: Send error in QFSUnixInfo = -95
CIFS VFS: cifs_read_super: get root inode failed
thats.. probably not good
well we're moving stuff around in case they scouted the place for a comeback
any way to check if the NAS is ok?
I mean, outside the server?
yeah it mounts if I click the network tab in nautilus
or thunar
any differences in ip addresses?
13:21
no, static
I didn't really change anything. just shut down, moved it, plugged in and booted
static ips, same router as before

Q: Wi - Fi hacking for windows 7

enxohow can I hack Wi-Fi easily how to get a WEP key .. I have tried to hack but always unsuccessful please mail me Block quote*strong text*

Who upvotes crap like this?
Is this kind of hacking real?
@Boris_yo Okay… in the first second of the video you see a guy talking in front of a The Illuminati – Facts and Fiction poster. Cedibility—gone!
@slhck: no idea
Seriously though, anything can be hacked. If the baby monitor doesn't transmit encrypted video, it's super easy to hack that.
And in that case, hacking == sniffing packets, done.
lol
the IP baby monitor hacks are form people using the default password ;p
14:42
@slhck lol
No the article said that hacker could actually scream at baby through device.
@slhck: fact - they don't exist. Fiction, they rule the world.
;p
@Boris_yo: yes. they left the default settings on
@JourneymanGeek And how hacker was able to find IP of device?
And how the device was connected to the internet if it's in private network?
@slhck Opinion, superuser.com/questions/633011/… want me to try and turn this highly localised pile of crap i made into a mini "how to find out if your PSU supports a particular video card" or just toss it out ?
@Boris_yo: I think it was through the device website
@JourneymanGeek You mean all devices have their feed centralized on website that hacker hacks into and gets access to controls? Can't be because devices are in personal area network. Why would consumers agree to control device through website rather than through local machine?
14:56
superuser.com/users/70827/dodi-jones this person's webpage is 1. a masterpiece of bad design. 2. conspiracy central
@Boris_yo: ease I guess
I'd look for the article but my rss feed reader is on the other box

Is there any better way to manage bookmarks for Firefox? Mine is a big mess.
honestly, I just don't use em
I make VERY heavy use of RSS feeds
@JourneymanGeek that's pretty much what I do.
@slhck there's the other kvm too
i star something and never go back.

Q: LINUX command to out from super user

user246313How to get out from super user, what is the command to over come, i made my account as super user please give me some suggestion. it is in "LINUX"

@Hennes yes like who writes this shit anyways superuser.com/questions/633067/… :-)

@Hennes How the...
I guess he might have added his account to the root group?
IT IS A LINUX!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Not sure. The post (in its current form) is just bad.
Bob
Bob
16:40
AFAIK you can't just 'make an account' root...
As is my answer.
yeah, WTF is LINUXXX
Why not? Just give it id 0
Bob
Bob
Hm. Unless you rename the uid 0 account.
Nope
Bob
Bob
16:41
@Hennes Because there normally already is one.
JUst creat a regular account, and use id 0
Bob
Bob
o.O
YOu can have multiple account with the same uid
Bob
Bob
Oh, that's just great
Which is even a default on FreeBSD
Mess up your login script -> move to fall back toor/root account
Bob
Bob
16:42
brb while I go hunt down the Unix developers
Output after dong a su - toor on FreeBSD 7.4
[root@dragon /usr/ports/converters/libiconv]# id
uid=0(root) gid=0(wheel) groups=0(wheel)
And I recall creating an rhennes account on slackware 2.4
Normal user hennes. Secondary root account rhennes with a bash as login. While root got a plain static /bin/sh (not a bash or a symlink to bash)
That broke a lot of software which erronuously assumed bash.
Bob
Bob
@Hennes I don't think I even have a plain sh on Ubuntu systems :\
You often need to manually compile it. And make sure it is a static binary.
The real fun is when things break and you have a dynamically linked shell and no /usr/ ;-)
Bob
Bob
Well, that's a new one:
root@bandwagon-1:~# readlink /bin/sh
dash
Yup. Since some time
Bob
Bob
16:47
IIRC dash is statically linked?
I should hope so.
These days memory is not an option, but I remember the time when I got yelled at for using several bash shells at the same time, using 30% of a servers memory for a trio of shells
Bob
Bob
Hrm.
root@bandwagon-1:~# ldd /bin/dash
        linux-gate.so.1 =>  (0xb7738000)
        libc.so.6 => /lib/i386-linux-gnu/libc.so.6 (0xb757e000)
        /lib/ld-linux.so.2 (0xb7739000)
Which is why I still have the habit that 1) Root needs an always working shell 2) It should not be a bloated, used by many users, dynamical shell
Bob, try to move /lib/ for fun and see what happens :-)
Or rather, 1) make sure you have a backup or alternative booting options
Bob
Bob
Uhm. This is on an actively used VPS.
Not the best place to test :)
Bob
Bob
16:50
I'll boot up the VM :P
Huh.
root:x:0:0:root:/root:/bin/bash
All other 'built-in' accounts with a shell use /bin/sh :P
Ok, on the VM:
bob@ubuntu:~$ ldd /bin/dash
        linux-vdso.so.1 =>  (0x00007fff947fe000)
        libc.so.6 => /lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libc.so.6 (0x00007fc379ae3000)
        /lib64/ld-linux-x86-64.so.2 (0x00007fc379ec2000)
My toor account uses /bin/sh, but the first thing I usually do is an exec bash. ;-)
But I am not chsh'ing the account
Bob
Bob
Nawp:
root@ubuntu:/home/bob# /broken_lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/ld-linux-x86-64.so.2 /bin/dash
/bin/dash: error while loading shared libraries: libc.so.6: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory
Which was pretty much expected, anyway.
There seems to be a dash-static package, though.
