I think I got this picture from either [SU] or [SF], not sure.
But I just looked at it and it made me think of management.
The managers are obviously the guys (or galls) in the cockpits
@Bob: most converters seem pen specific
Bob
Bob
fark
I might just stick to the vpen
Bob
Bob
@JourneymanGeek there are some 'international standard' ones

@JourneymanGeek just had to prime it again
@JourneymanGeek it dried up @.@

Q: Automatically Formatting Text from Upper Case

DominicMy boss is old school, he's not the office type but he runs the business well. He's been in business since before computers became a big part of it, and as such he never quite practiced some fundamentals. Basically, he gets up to 100 emails a day that he must reply to, and he does. But recently...

I'm still not 100% with the platinum
Bob
Bob
I feel this particular comment applies in his case:
One suggestion would be to just program the kids directly. However, some people prefer the indirect route through the computer, which does provide a convenient pre-existing portal. — Carl Feb 1 at 23:35
Its a software req tho ;p
Bob

11:49
@JourneymanGeek In what way?
Oh, wait, the question text.
@JourneymanGeek Oh heya, sorry I'm mostly in lurk mode these days....

Anyway, I believe someone once called this looking for "a software solution to a people problem"
I've just finally managed to get a Raspberry Pi to be able to compile and program an embedded ARM chip

Ah, here:
> Your problem is not technical, but a people problem.
And, another quote:
> This is a people problem, not a technology problem.
@Mokubai: cool
@Bob like PEBKAC?
> I would not mind hot chick to teabag me.
It's a rather daft use of a Pi, but it amuses me...
eh what.. hot chick and teabagging someone. O_O
Bob
Bob
lol
There, left a comment.

@jokerdino: its boris ;p
Bob
Bob
As someone once succinctly put it, this is a people problem, not a technology problem. This is something the user should learn, should be trained to do. He knows correct capitalisation when hand-writing, right? Then it's not a great stretch to learn the same for typing. — Bob 2 mins ago
I do hope that wasn't too harsh :P
@JourneymanGeek yeah. it confirms my theory he doesn't know what he is sending :P
i mean if a chick is gonna teabag you, bloody make sure she is actually a chick.
@Bob Fix the wetware, not the software.
Bob
Bob
@Mokubai Never heard that term before. Mind if I steal it for future use?
Think I stole it from various cyberpunk novels so feel free :)
(the "wetware" term at least)
I also favour "meatware" for the times when you want to imply that people are just dumb hunks of meat sitting behind desks bashing at keyboards...
Wetware is a term drawn from the computer-related idea of hardware or software, but applied to biological life forms. Here the prefix "wet" is a reference to the water found in living creatures. Wetware is used to describe the elements equivalent to hardware and software found in a person, namely the central nervous system (CNS) and the human mind. The term wetware finds use both in works of fiction and in scholarly publications. The "hardware" component of wetware concerns the bioelectric and biochemical properties of the CNS, specifically the brain. If the sequence of impulses travell...
Hehe, "Meatware" redirects to wetware on Wiki so I'm not the first to have thought of that term either....

Nothing much.
Bob

Wait. What was it actually called?
Ubuntu for Android?
Ubuntu Touch.
Bob
Bob
12:12
...
@Bob that's a different technology.
Bob
Bob
I don't know anymore.
Ubuntu for Android loads Ubuntu when docked with a monitor and keyboard, etc. Supposedly comes preloaded with Android mobile.
Ubuntu Touch is an alternative for Android OS on mobiles and tablets.
Bob
Bob
@jokerdino What defines Android, anyway?
At what point does it become its own OS, rather than just another UI running on top of Android (see: TouchWiz, etc.)
I... what?
Bob
Bob
12:16
@MichaelFrank ?
Ubuntu Touch is not a UI. It's a full blown OS.
Android is literally the OS.
Bob
Bob
@jokerdino The Wikipedia article mentions it runs on the same kernel as Android. At what point is that distinctly Linux-but-not-Android?
@MichaelFrank There's a lot of definitions of "OS".
@Bob Link please?
Isn't Android based on the Linux kernel anyway?
Bob
Bob
12:18
What we call "Linux" could be more technically regarded as the "Linux kernel" with the "GNU userland".
It's... different levels of... specificness?

@Bob At this point of development, it's not fully matured. But it's intended to be a replacement to Android much like FIrefox OS.
13:06
Hi
I'm back with yet another stupid question
I have a PC with a 450W power supply and a XFX DD Radeon HD 7870 graphics card and no onboard graphics
When I start the system with that graphics card, I can hear the drives working (mean in the system is working) but no display output is generated.
If I use another much less powerful card (GTX550Ti) it works fine
Is the power supply insufficient or is there a fault with the card?
I have only been able to connect one of the auxiliary power connectors to the card if that helps.
13:30
I'm not looking for a software that has this functionality as a feature,
I'm looking for a lightweight app
I guess apps are not software
14:03
@njallam: does the card have a need for 2?
Hmm... Trying to install Windows Vista on Windows 7 and getting "Not enough space!"
But I have space - a lot of GBs free. Something tells me even if that wasn't space problem, installer would say still that it cannot install older version of Windows on newer...
@Boris_yo: the installer should wipe out the other partition if you can get into it.
I found install files but need to burn them with Windows PE with command: oscdimg -bC:\Vista\boot\etfsboot.com -h -lVISTA_EN_DVD -m -u2
C:\Vista\ C:\windows_vista_with_service_pack_1_dvd.iso
Bob
Bob
@JourneymanGeek seems to work fine now
perhaps I shouldn't store the pen facing up
'facing up'?
ohhh
yeah, I usually leave mine on the side
Bob
Bob
14:12
@njallam Generally: if it has two connectors, giving it two may be a good idea
But, being face side up should be a supported storage position
Bob
Bob
@JourneymanGeek "supported"
:P
funnily enough: my video card has both aux connectors on the same line from the PSU
@Bob: if no ink comes out that way, its a feature, not a bug ;p
Bob
Bob
it's not a very well-designed PSU
Why do I need Windows AIK?
Bob
Bob
14:14
because you're doing it wrong
and/or someone did it wrong and destroyed the recovery partition some time ago
@Bob Instructions say I need to download Windows AIK to proceed with burning Vista install ISO.
Bob
Bob
Again, if you were doing this the 'correct' way, hacks like this should not be necessary.
Just boot off the recovery partition directly.
Or burn a standard OEM installation ISO.
Not burn the recovery partition onto optical media.
@Bob I am not burning recovery partition, I burn Vista install I downloaded from Digital River.
Bob
Bob
Annnd?
Why the hell would you need to fudge around with boot sectors?
@JourneymanGeek Still wondering if I should get a Preppy :P
@Bob Boot sectors on DVD?
Bob
Bob
14:21
?
@Bob: I'll let you know how mine was.
@Bob What sectors are you talking about? I try to burn Vista install so I can boot from USB flash drive and install OS. I have authentic CD-KEY.
Bob
Bob
wtf.
I'm talking about your command above.
Go figure out what it actually does, then go take a good long think about what you actually want to do.
@Bob This is the command I must use to burn on DVD.
Bob
Bob
> so I can boot from USB flash drive
> burn on DVD
make up your mind
14:24
I erred. This command is for making ISO.

"You can then trigger the iso creation by opening Windows PE Tools, which will give you a command prompt. There you enter the following line:"
Bob

...what exactly did you download?

@JourneymanGeek the main reason for a Preppy was to have a properly refillable pen
@Hennes Yes sir.

@Boris_yo The correct answer is: Sir! Yes sir! Sir!

@Bob: local noodler's dealer is kinda posh ;p

Popular Holdings (Chinese: 大众书局), commonly called Popular, is a Singapore-based company that publishes, distributes, and retails books for the local education market. It has subsidiaries in countries such as Canada, the People's Republic of China, Hong Kong, Malaysia, and Taiwan. In the financial year 2011, it had a turnover of S$522.4 million. The first Popular Bookstore was set up in 1936 by Chou Sing Chu in North Bridge Road, focusing on retailing Chinese books and stationery. In March 2006, Popular Holdings was the main organiser of BookFest@Singapore, the first Chinese-language book...

@ruda.almeida It's the Kango framework default.
@OliverSalzburg I was just kidding... >_<

17:44
Does a background process take up any less resident memory than a foreground process?
@JohnMerlino Usually, depending how it's programmed. In a perfect world, it would just take up swap space, basically living on the hard drive, until it gets activated
@CanadianLuke does apache2 spawn its child processes as background proceses?
I can see the benefits of a background process when you are in the shell. It returns flow to the user after the user invokes the background process. But what benefit does background processes have for programs like apache2. I mean can't it spawn all its children as foreground processes rather than background processes and make no difference whatsoever
18:16
I guess like you said, it's better to have them sit on swap space until used. Can a foreground process sit in swap space until it's used, or only background processes can do that??

3 hours later…

I can really imagine this conversation.
(Source: http://notalwaysright.com/get-a-second-life/4925 )

Customer: “Are you serious? What about my Farmville?”

Me: “Sorry, but that’s how long it takes.”

Customer: “But my crops will wither and die!”
22:03
Nvm
22:13
Definition of background process: "A background process is a program that is running without user input. A number of background processes can be running on a multitasking operating system, such as Linux, while the user is interacting with the foreground process Some background processes, such as daemons, for example, never require user input. Others are merely in the background temporarily while the user is busy with the program presently running in the foreground. "
Given that definition, wouldn't that make a process like apache2 a background process since it never interacts with user inpu
22:28
uhm
It interacts with user input alright. Just usually not froma terminal
Usually, because sometimes you test with telnet webserver port (newline) GET index.html HTTP/1.1
@Hennes so then you consider a foreground process also to include a process that can take user input via telnet. So if that's true, then why wouldn't a socket server listening for udp packets from another client server be considered a foreground process? After all, that takes input as well.
Yet you often consider socket servers to be "background jobs"
I think there are two definitions here. One is about user input (whether a process can accept user input). The other is whether a process is sleeping and sitting on swap space or not. Here you can refer to both of these as background processes, which makes the term confusing
23:14
ok ignore everything I said above, I think I got it cleared up
