6:02 PM
@Sciborg I mean, yeah, it's not completely broken, but it eliminates your chance of critical fail to a really low percent
Like 2.5%?

many DMs dislike the ability and/or nerf it
i think it's fine, though. The only practical effect is to halve the critical fail chance.

not halve
crit fail becomes crit fail * crit fail

1/20*1/20
@Sciborg I don't think it's that OP. I'm just complaining about them :P
1/400

ah, oops, 1/400 yeah. you caught me working and sleepy.

0.25% chance to roll a 1

6:07 PM
In my DMing experience, it almost never comes up as a problem and makes for really funny RPing, so i don't mind it.

I don't think it should be nerfed. I would love to watch Mith just flip off every time she rolls a critical fail

"At the absolute last goddamn millisecond you catch yourself from falling into the trap."

F* you death

Lae stares in awe - how could such a tiny being do that?

Lae looks jealously over his fellow ranger
Oh, @Sciborg can you explain how duel-wielding works?

6:09 PM
Okay, Crash Course about actions would be required - did you guys read up on how actions work in combat?

yikes not reaaly

I have vague memories from the one combat I've been in

I just want to know if it would be worth it

Okay, so in combat, you have three types of actions: Action, Bonus Action, and Free Action.
You get one of each per turn.
Oh, and Move Action, sorry. so four.

Basically: Longsword vs duel-wield

6:11 PM
Attacks and spells usually cost "1 Action" in their description, so you would do that on your Action.
Bonus Actions are where you can dual attack, do smaller actions, etc.

why don't they name Action something else so it doesn't seem like the other kinds of Actions are subtypes?

When you dual-wield, you can attack with your second weapon on your Bonus Action, but you do not get to add your Ability modifier to the damage.
And dual-wielding can only be done with Light weapons.

Ah, so the duel-wield fighting style at level 2 allows me to add my ability modifiers
That's kind of OP

Everything in 5th edition has been carefully balanced and playtested, so nothing's really OP except for a couple things that they quickly nerfed.

I mean not super broken, but just extra damage, which is what I'm all about

6:14 PM
@bobble I don't know why they are named that way, they just are :p

So why does the Ranger stuff recommend duel wield rangers focus on strength?

Well, if you dual-wielded with two Light weapons, let's say Shortswords, those are Finesse and can use either Strength or Dexterity.
So either Strength or Dexterity is fine

Ah
And does longsword use strength?

Longswords aren't Light, so you can't dual-wield with those. They use Strength.

Drat
Hm I could probably do more damage by wielding two shortswords than one longsword

6:17 PM
Plausibly, yeah

Well let's see

Depends on your Dex score

If I'm at level two
My dex is 17, strength 14, strength has no modifiers, dex has +2

*+3

Oh, does it increase with level?

6:19 PM
17 (+3) and 14 (+2)?
ability score modifiers?

Urm... 14+0 and 15+2
Ohhh

i'm confused

did I miswrite my ability scores?

.....yes

@Sciborg 14 (+0) strength, 15(+2) dex

6:20 PM
Strength should be 14 (+2), not 14 (+0)

Wait, what?

Dexterity should be 17 (+3), not 17 (+2)
Intelligence should be 8 (-1), not 8 (0)
Wisdom should be 16 (+3), not 16 (+1)

I'm confused

Charisma should be 8 (-1), not 8 (0)

Can you explain what's going on?

6:21 PM
how did you calculate ability modifiers??
wait, did you just put the racial down? ahhh

the oval is for the total ability score modifier...

second-to-last column

look at "Ability Modifier" column, yeah
those are your final Ability Modifiers

Uh-oh, need to redo this

6:22 PM
i... feel bad that i did not catch this until now

God I gotta redo my entire stats and weapons

fully my bad for not clarifying to use that column
gah
sorry, North

everyone else's ability modifiers look fine, i think
i should have checked earlier ahh

Yikes -1 intelligence, -1 charisma
That's

6:25 PM
i was wondering why your attack modifiers seemed so low
now it makes sense
sorry :(
i should have caught that

Damn, I am truly min/maxed
Hm, should I raise my strength or wisdom?
Wisdom

Wisdom would help if people tried to mind-spell you
I think that's the stat for the saving roll, yes?

Usually, yup
i feel super bad for making you redo everything :(

It's okay, it's my fault

no, you are my student and I am the one who has failed you :p

6:29 PM
What's my AC?
I have leather armor on

Leather is 11 + Dexterity modifier

Not half bad

Thankful my cons hasn't changed so
Still 10

'borg, did you see that I switched to chain mail?

6:30 PM
So then your hitpoints are still 10
@bobble I did not, nice

I found out that I'm proficient with it, and I wanted to be less squishy

Where did you get the heavy armor proficiency? i don't know if cleric gets that

Dwarf

Ahhhhh

might be a Hill Dwarf specific thing

6:31 PM
Nice!

Ah, that's much better. I look much more min/maxed now :D

I forgot that was a Dwarf thing

14 hours ago, by Graylocke
Yeah - I think everyone benefits from the cleric not taking damage ;p

So my avr d20 roll should hit everyone in this team

Min/max for the win :p

6:32 PM
I LOVE my stats

I didn't min-max fully, seeing as I have a Dex weapon and a -1 mod in that

Though not sure I really want to get up close to anything

Characters look much better when you use the actual modifiers :P

I did not min/max, I spread things about a bit

Your stats are still pretty solid
+3 dex is nothing to scoff at
Passive wisdom is what again?

6:33 PM
10 + Perception modifier.

Ah, 15 passive wisdom

whistles

I was like I min-maxed, why do i look so weak?

i was wondering why you were asking how somebody got +3 dex
modifiers are confusing, no worries :p

I was like, huh, I guess halflings get +3

6:37 PM
"makes sense" :p

And I was confused how bobble ended up with negative stats
I was like
"I guess dwarves get bad dexterity, sucks for them"

"sucks to be a dwarf i guess"

Okay, maybe I shouldn't be -1 on investigation....

Dwarves who pushed Wis (for casting) and Con (to not die)

'borg can you double check everyone?

6:38 PM
Yup, did you send me your updated sheet?

Got it, I have some code to do quick but then I will go over everyone's character sheet with a fine tooth comb

Okay
Okay, I think I'll trade animal handling for investigation
What's the difference in effectiveness between -1 Investigation and +1 Investigation?

Investigation rolls are for picking up details and piecing things together in the environment. usually DC 15-20 to notice small details

Hm
I probably need that more than animal handling, I have a +3 on that anyways

6:43 PM
if you send me a fourth updated character sheet, i swear to god :P

what do you swear?

(kidding, kidding)

@Sciborg I'm sorry, but I probably will end up doing that
I'll send a screenshot instead here

dangit North :P

Yeah, investigation rather than animal handling
What's insight?

6:46 PM
Insight is realizing things, reading people's motivations and intentions, and putting stuff together in your head.
My group calls it "rolling to see what Mick wants us to do next"

@Sciborg I tend to anyway, alas

msh! :D
We were tentatively thinking a time of 10:00 UTC on Thursday/Fridays unless Mith is not comfortable staying up that late which is fine. We wanted to see what your scheduling was like though

@PrinceNorthLæraðr I believe Grey said Brisbane. Unless I'm confuing them with someone else, which is entirely possible.
@bobble I didn't know Canada had had a civil war.

CA = captain america
me lazy

So GMT+10 in Brisbane
@Sciborg Hm, insight vs athletics... wait I think I get athletics from my background

6:51 PM
@PrinceNorthLæraðr that's 8AM

@Sciborg what's "OP"?

"OP" means "Overpowered."
It's when something is so good that it breaks the game a bit.

Aka, me
(just joking)

or "unfairly good"

^

6:54 PM
^^
Yup, looks good

Our debate earlier was whether the Halfling's racial trait "Lucky" is OP, and if we should limit its uses.

I'll send you my updated updated sheet, for the last time
It wasn't really a debate
I was complaining about it, but it's not that broken

oh, i thought you were implying i should nerf it :P

Nah
I think it's hilarious

it's a very funny ability, i love when it comes up
"oh, i rolled a 1? how about no"

6:57 PM
*bobble adds Kith flipping off failure to the drawing*

Bobble can you save that transcript somehow as "msh's character sheet" so i can look back at it later?
i do not know how to do that

... though I'm thinking I should have longstrider instead of one of my level-one spells
so wait, don't save it yet :-)

post all the sheets together and then bookmark them

ahh, good idea

7:00 PM
probably get the backgrounds in there as well

alternatively msh you're welcome to email a final sheet to me, as i have been making a folder of everyone's sheets :)

you are a blessed crown <3

no wait, I changed page 3

7:01 PM
deleted the conversation, since pinning the message will be easier

yeah thanks

so the imgur ones are the final versions? i will download those :)

yeah - the first two are the same as above; the last just substitutes longstrider for healing word

I hijacked the "ADDITIONAL FEATURES & TRAITS" area to dump extra character information, hope that's okay

Saved :)
You can hijack other spots to put character stuff, no worries! :P

7:04 PM
@Sciborg please let me know what's still missing from my sheet. I assume there's something. Please also let me know if you, as omniscient outsider, want/need to know what went wrong that made me stop racing, even though I don't tell anyone else.

Damn msh is balanced as heck

slightly unbalanced though

Have you seen my stats?
Oh mine got updated, I'll send you my updated stats

it was a joke -- "imbalanced" means with one <whatever> more than another. "unbalanced" means crazy

7:05 PM
@msh210 You've got everything, the only thing missing is your Spell Save DC but that's easy to calculate. 8 + proficiency + ability modifier you use to cast spells.

I'm unbalanced too, don't worry

@PrinceNorthLæraðr it's okay

picture of just my stats/skills, because why not

where do I put spell save dc? and what does it mean?

7:07 PM
3rd page, top row, the box labeled "Spell Save DC"

thanks. so it's 8 + my proficiency bonus (2) + my charisma modifier (2) I guess....

And your spell attack bonus is just the ability modifier you use to cast spells + proficiency.

darn, I don't have my Spell Save DC either

@bobble Pfft, you're only skilled in 4 skills?

7:07 PM
or that

The Spell Save DC is the number that enemies have to beat to not be affected by certain of your spells.

what are spell save DC & spell attack bonus, though?
@Sciborg ah ok

time to recopy Astrid again ;-;

you don't have to recopy!! ;-; can just calculate on the fly if you need it

y'all are making me want to double-check all my stats and skills

7:10 PM
No, I'm just dumb

after i finish up work i am going to go over everyone's character sheets with a more detailed check, no worries.

I'm very non-sneaky: -1 for Stealth and Chain Mail
who can sneak well in our party?

I am very sneaky
Very sneaky
+5 stealth, +3 dex, 17 total dex + mask of the wild trait

2 stealth
How do you get a minus anything?

That's if you're like me and min/maxed

7:12 PM
I have 8 dexterity

oh because your abilities modifiers (did I get that name right?) are negative?

got it

So I'm really good at what I'm good at, and I'm bad at what I'm really bad at

Precisely :p

7:14 PM
Once I get Fog Cloud at level 2, I get +10000000 bonus to my stealth :D (joking. But I do get a massive stealth boost)
I was like how does msh have such high stats and I was like oh that's right humans get like +1 in everything
Right>

I can usually do 22:00 UTC but can't guarantee I can do so every night. And Friday nights are completely out.

ok
So sounds like Thursdays

no guarantee I can do so every Thursday, either

Thursdays may be a finicky, but it's not a bad day

I have familial obligations etc

7:17 PM
Schoolwork, test-studying, or Bible Study

Schoolwork, tutoring, and occasionally I make dinner

chewing gum, walking across the room, drying my hair

gum is disgusting

I have Bible study at 3:00 am UTC

(I was kidding. I don't actually have an obligation to chew gum some Thursdays. In case that wasn't clear. :-) )
@PrinceNorthLæraðr that's a weird time to have it if you live in Greenwich

7:19 PM
:P

what do you do at a bible study?
my only references here are To Kill a Mockingbird and Young Sheldon

We read the Bible and talk about the passage we read
Or we watch a video about a passage and reflect
It's really fun because my leader is awesome
@Sciborg What's our total stat used for?
Or total mod or whatever, the big box number

Do you mean like the ability score big number?

Yeah
The 17 in the 17 (+3)

There are some effects that can deal ability score damage and drop your ability scores, and if one drops to zero, you can die.

7:26 PM
Oh crap
Maybe I shouldn't have min/maxed so hard :/

It's extremely uncommon, no worries :p
i have never had anyone die from ability damage

So the big number doesn't do much, it's the modifiers that do the most of the effects?

Yup

@PrinceNorthLæraðr *doesn't?

7:28 PM
Yes
Do our numbers increase in level?

Some levels give you Ability Score Increases, which you can use to increase a) one Ability Score by +2 or b) two Ability Scores by +1.
This can obviously raise your modifiers and affect other stuff
Instead of taking the Ability Score Increase, however, you can pick a Feat instead, which are special powers and fun stuff.

7:41 PM
Ooh okay
I can't dual-wield with rapier, right? Because it's not light?

yup, it's Finesse but not Light

Hm, rapier is much better than longsword for me
Or slightly better bc my dex is +3 but strength is +2

Not sure where to note this - from my picture, Astrid is left-handed. Does it matter?

I think I'm going to go into dual-wield specialty level two. Going super aggro

@bobble Doesn't affect anything mechanically, so it can be noted under Features and Traits maybe.

7:46 PM
Also @Sciborg a friend of mine that plays a lot of DnD says there are initiative bonuses at level one? I'm not sure

Only with specific types of Rangers i think?

and you'd have to be Level 4 IIRC

@PrinceNorthLæraðr cool, and I'll focus on ranged

@Mithical Perfect
His advice for me was like "You can just focus on close damage and run away if your health starts dropping because you're already pretty fast"

7:48 PM
Yup, you have really high speed since Wood Elf so you can book it out of combat pretty easily.

@Sciborg He might've mixed on different editions, he plays a lot of different editions
@Sciborg Or Fog Cloud and hide

I think the only possible initiative bonus for Ranger comes at Level 4
and you'd have to be something weird like Gloomstalker

Hm looking through the PHB

once i get home i can check for certain

Astrid would prefer to not be front-line fighting - she likes hanging back and protecting things/friends. She'll warhammer anyone who gets too close.

7:50 PM
Doesn't seem like there's an initiative bonus
How intiative work? You roll a d20 but also dexterity? Bit confused

It's a flat Dexterity roll. d20 + Dex mod.

Ah, I think that's what he was talking about
The dex mod

;-; I have -1 dex mod

It's okay, you can heal us or finish off enemies
It makes sense the two more aggressive builds would move earlier

I'm very non-combat-focused
None of my spells can really be used in a combat situation...

7:53 PM
(I hope you're not judging me too hard for being on Discord and Stack Exchange at work, entry-level busywork programming gets really boring)

Nah, we don't judge
What are gray's stats?

He gave me his character sheet - 8 STR, 16 DEX, 10 CON, 10 INT, 14 WIS, and 16 CHA.

So 16(+3) for dex. Cool

Ack! calculated hitpoints wrong
I have 12, not 10
>< I think the sheet will need to be recopied again

7:57 PM
no!!!

I never closed my sheet, so I can just edit it

cleric hitpoints is 8 + Con right?

This time 'round I can correct hitpoints and add in Spell stuff
Con is 16, so mod of +3

And, of course, I always save it after editing it

Dwarven Toughness gives me one more
8 + 3 + 1 = 12

7:57 PM
ahhh, so 12. yup.

I'm not quite so squishy!
AC of 16 and 12 HP seems good for level 1

it is! :D
