is there anything other than wsus offline to download updates? i am on a patch but the next cumaltive update isn't even in the catalog anymore :$

Bob
12:48 AM
@Ramhound lol. I think I updated a 1507 VM last month
@Ramhound do you intend to upgrade to a newer version?

Yes
But it's any feature upgrade fails due to a SafeOS failure

Bob
@Ramhound even from MCT?
I went 1511 => 1809 with the upgrade assistant from the MS website

I think i tried that awhile ago. Upgrade Assistant failed. Mounting the ISO failed
WSUS offline does not support 1507...

Bob
auto updates only installed the latest 1511 (which was actually current 2019-04, but still)
@Ramhound do you have any more info?
a crash dump? the error logs from the update (in Windows.~BT/panther directory)

\Sources\SafeOSError = 0x800706BA-0x5000F
Which was PathForNewOSFIle, index 9
Result = 0x800706BA
I used a setuperror tool to pull all that out of the error log :$

Bob
12:55 AM
0x000006BA

RPC_S_SERVER_UNAVAILABLE

operation 0F, SP_EXECUTION_OP_ADD_UNATTEND
... o.O
@Ramhound can you hunt down the log files and see what it did last? docs.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/deployment/upgrade/log-files

I just got done clearing everything. So i have a clean slate.

Bob
it's not SafeOS btw, that would've been 0x2xxxx
@Ramhound if it's a VM, you should probably snapshot first

When I mount the ISO with VMWare, that's the reason it rolls back, a SafeOS error :$

Bob
hm
0x5xxxx should've been after OOBE
maybe that's not the right error code
@Ramhound See if you can find the setupact.log and setuperr.log, possible locations at docs.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/deployment/upgrade/log-files

AMD's keynote at COMPUTEX is in less than hour.

1:09 AM
@Bob I used a tool the parses those log files. However it might be that the tool is designed for 1607+ since the documation is also

Bob
@Ramhound I'd rather read the logs manually than use a tool

You will have to give me a minute then

You know Excel is struggling when you see it start using GPU in Task Manager.

Bob
IME those simplified tools don't always report the right thing (compare: BlueScreenView vs Windbg on a crash dump) or give the full picture
@Ramhound Sure, no rush. I'd suggest snapshotting before upgrade and again after (rollback?) so at least you won't need to spend time doing it again.
VM snapshots are fairly cheap if you have the disk space (for an upgrade, ~10 GB would be enough)

1:25 AM
When I attempt to do the upgrade with a mounted iSO that is what I am provided
Standby for the files
That's the rollback setupact.log
pather/setupact.log is 26 MB :$

Q: Cables for building a computer

FakenI'm looking at building a computer and I have already done a whole bunch of research the topic and I think I know what I'm doing. My question is where do all the cables required for connecting everything come from? I'm pretty sure that the cables required come from their respective components (p...

I must have man handled the brain to text :_)
trying to an upgrade to 1511. Even Insider Preview seems to dislike me as it only offers RS2 and RS3 channels, lol

Bob
@Ramhound yea, will probably need that
hold on

1:44 AM
@JourneymanGeek Simpler times, huh?

Bob
@Ramhound can you chuck it here? files.floofyfox.com/s/rqOnVXWzyKSlzGM

uploading now
should be done

Bob
@Ramhound got it, thanks. mind if I link it here?

..... youtu.be/jlaxgiszfEo basically you can get the same or better performance on a single cheap board and a commondity screen but they really don't make things like they used to....

1:50 AM
nope

(the T220 was the first avaialble "uhd" monitor before UHD was a thing.)

Bob
@Ramhound oops, missed that mega link
sorry

Brings back the John Carmack photo of him working on that massive CRT.

Bob
1:52 AM
ah yup, that's also a RPC error, which matched the other code you provided earlier

this is a 18,000 dollar 22 inch 4k monitor ;p
fed by up to 4 DVI links

Ahh, mine is only $9995 lol

Bob
@Ramhound do you need a 1511 iso?

Basically IBM went "Hold my Beer" and built the most overengineered monitor they could

No, I have one

1:55 AM
Ahhh, Sheets("Sheet 1").Select Of course!
I obviously refer to all single Sheets as plural!

I know they significantly improved the upgrade process between 1603 and 1607 i think it was

I have seen this issue previously and it may have to do with old unused or rarely accessed accounts and the migration of their store applications this link https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/9e12ac9e-8d06-4f06-98c3-ba90c6da3b9a/trying-to-upg...

Talks about resetting the APPX cache - I ended up deleting the old users but this is most likely a better approach to simply remove the cache

Yeah.....I found that too

Bob
The erroring migration component looks like that one

@JourneymanGeek That terminal window...

ugh
@Ramhound RPC_E_SERVERFAULT => more specific error code is ... elsewhere
did event logs happen to record anything? (I doubt it but maybe worth a peek)

CalToday at 9:51 PM
Confirmed 12c 24t for half the price of 9900k, beating it by 28% or so
CoorbinToday at 9:58 PM
28% faster multicore?
CalToday at 9:58 PM
I believe so, yes. Averaging 15% better IPC
CoorbinToday at 9:58 PM
wow
CalToday at 9:59 PM
They ran a practice stream or somesuch, realized it was broadcast, but not before slides we're saved and posted to Reddit
AMD... hmm

@allquixotic OOI
YOU CANNOT DROP A BOMB LIKE THAT AND NOT SAY WHAT PROCESSOR

I believe that's the 3900x
Ryzen third gen

2:04 AM
@allquixotic Yeah, they quickly took that down.

@allquixotic ahh ok
maybe next box in a few years ;)

@JourneymanGeek Astaroth is likely to be upgraded within the next few months.
I'm eager to see the actual specs and demos.

@bwDraco I run a 9900K ;p

CalToday at 10:02 PM
Looks like they're comparing a 3800x @ $500 to it's Intel competitor at $1200. Scouring to try to find core counts for each model specifically, they're getting taken down and watched now
"According to the stream (if i heard correctly), the 3900X beats the 9920X by 16% in Blender while using less power. This is a $499 chip going against the $1199 9920X."
I'm down to scouring comments in megathreads now, they're taking down posts faster than I can research
I'll just post a few comments of folks who saw the slipup

Not sure if @Ramhound managed to fix the problem he had...

2:07 AM
3700X $329 6c12t 65w

3800X $399 8c16t

3900X $499 12c24t 105w, 3.8 base, 4.6 GHz boost

EDIT: Launch 7/7

EDIT2: Seems 3700X could be 8c/16t based on a comment further down. 65w either way. Hopefully I am wrong in this case :)

All I got before it went down.

@allquixotic ooh, might be fun for a home server ._.
considering apparently I can host at home now

7/7 is late; gives Intel ample time to cut prices to compete... since Intel sells their CPUs at a huuuuuuuuuuge markup, they can simply cut prices to compete
they don't even have to innovate

@allquixotic to a point

Intel is still grappling with a supply shortage. It's supposed to be almost over, but I highly doubt they have a huge amount of room to cut prices.

but I guess that means in July we can expect to see much cheaper top end Intel CPUs... good either way

2:10 AM
If Intel makes deep price cuts, they're going to hit into supply limits again. The market will naturally set a floor for the price.
Also, Intel's 10nm desktop parts are not happening into 2020. AMD is a full node ahead of Intel in the desktop space for as long as 10nm desktop processors and systems containing such processors aren't available at retail.

@bwDraco - the VM issue i might have
@bwDraco - The new pc build, nope, still nota
Since I didn't have anything to short the PSU i ordered something
(and a PSU tester)

You could have just used a paper clip.

@Ramhound I've done it with a paperclip or jumper wire

23 hours ago, by bwDraco
Then, with the retaining clip on the ATX12V connector facing up, short the pin fourth from the left in the top row of the connector (that's the power-on pin) to an adjacent pin (third or fifth pin) in the top row.

its just a sense pin

2:14 AM
It's simply a signal for the PSU to turn on.

I realize that. I just don't have paper clips...

WRT AMD's process advantage... this is also giving them a massive power advantage. They are wiping the floor with Intel in performance per watt.

@Bob - 1511 installed without a problem. So confused

Do you have several pins/needles?
You could just sorta... lay them on each other to create the circuit.

Bob
@Ramhound hmm... then 1903 (or 1809) from there?

2:17 AM
I honestly need the mental break, waiting a day, will be good for me

Bob
since it was the migration failing maybe it was just the 1507 path...

It was such an old build it didnt indicate which build of 1507 it was, lol
pre-2016 based on the windows history

So... TIL that when you select a large (500,000 x 5) table in Excel and Right Click > Delete Table Rows while recording a macro, it breaks everything.

2:32 AM
Five years ago, AMD was two years, even three years behind Intel. Now they're a whole year ahead.
A year and a half or so ago, we saw a precursor of what would be a revolutionary new technology: chiplets powered by Infinity Fabric.
Navi: Moving away from GCN with the new RDNA architecture.
PCIe 4.0.
Availability in July.

3:12 AM
The Zen 2 core: Double the floating-pointing performance. Doubled L3 cache. 15% more IPC.
My God, we have not seen an advance this large in years.
Ryzen 7 3700X: 8C/16T Zen 2 @ 3.6-4.4 GHz. 65W TDP.
65W. Wow.
Ryzen 7 3800X: 8C/16T Zen 2 @ 3.9-4.5 GHz. 32 MB L3$, 4 MB L2$. 105W TDP.
And you're getting PCIe 4.0.
Ryzen 9 3900X: 12C/24T Zen 2 @ 3.8-4.6 GHz. 64 MB L3$, 6 MB L2$. 105W TDP.
They said 70 MB total cache.
64 MB L3 cache is insane.
12 cores for $500? You can't possibly be serious.
Available July 7.
Blowing past the Intel Core i9-9920X at half the cost and 35% less power.
32 MB of L3$ per 8-core chiplet is simply nuts.
Based on the L3$ amounts, the Ryzen 7 parts use one core chiplet. The Ryzen 9 part uses two.
> Direct chip to chip comparisons put AMD’s single thread performance against Intel at +1%. Though it should be noted here that something like the Ryzen 7 3800X, which boosts to 4.5 GHz, is being compared to an Intel CPU that boosts to 5.0 GHz. That would put IPC on this test firmly in the hands of AMD.

3:50 AM
Now the question remains: Get the 12-core part, or wait a bit more for a possible 16-core processor?
It is now clear why Intel announced the Core i9-9900KS. They are clearly getting desperate.
And even if they do gain a multithreaded performance advantage over the Ryzen 7 3800X, they are going to be burning vastly more power than the AMD part. There is no substitute for smaller transistors.
And I see little reason to prefer it over the Ryzen 9 3900X.
Intel has never faced a process disadvantage before.

4:54 AM
Here's the thing: AMD's doing insane amounts of L3$ here. I've seen a number of rumors pointing to doubled cache, but I find it hard to believe that this has materialized.
64 MB of L3$ on a 12-core processor, seriously?
I suspect it's necessary when you're looking at feeding that many cores with dual-channel memory, though we do know that two channels of DDR4 memory is sufficient for 8 cores.
12 cores, we don't know yet.
Regardless, we do not routinely get tech product announcements that are as big as this one. The performance uplift AMD has achieved is nothing short of astonishing.
Intel needs to have its 10nm process ready now. This process disadvantage is killing them.
It doesn't look like AMD made dramatic improvements in clock frequency, but the IPC improvement is one of the largest we've seen in recent memory, and performance per watt is just leaps and bounds beyond what Intel can muster.

5:59 AM
So mosaic became Netscape, which became FF?

@rahuldottech kinda.
funny thing is NCSA mosaic was the foundation for "classic" IE
@allquixotic its just binned 9900ks
@bwDraco do you need 16 cores?

@JourneymanGeek lol, I know there isn't any, but it would be so cool if FF still shared a couple lines of code with the original mosaic

@JourneymanGeek It's more a matter of "wait and see".
I likely will not benefit from 16 cores, though I have workloads (including gaming, believe it or not) that will saturate 8 cores.
(read: Assassin's Creed Odyssey)
@JourneymanGeek Yup. The Core i9-9900K already does 4.7 GHz on all cores, assuming it's on a motherboard that allows it enough power to do so.
The i9-9900KS is going to have crazy power consumption numbers.

not to mention you're unlikely to run all your cores at full speed all the time

Intel already has issues with power consumption and heat on the i9-9900K, and I highly doubt they can do much better without a new process.
There's just no substitute for smaller transistors.
IMO it's a very worrying sign for Intel.

6:38 AM
Well, that MSI X570 Godlike board is an EATX board alright. Only the second one I've seen since the AM4 platform launched. (The only other one I know of is the one Astaroth uses, the ASUS ROG Crosshair VI Extreme.)
I suspect there will be more EATX AM4 boards...

Can YouTube channel owner delete my comment?

@Boris_yo Yes, the uploader can remove comments from other users.

Crap, I wanted to expose BS but my since my comment will be deleted it's not worth my time.
The age of deception we live in...
Seriously how can you apply for a job as a program tester by completing Udemy course?
Or earn $10 per hour if you are freelancing.

7:34 AM
is SE websites going nuts? I'm getting an error from time to time about "Something happened, "it's not you, it's us"

there's been sporadic reports of that

8:33 AM
@Boris_yo you can very well apply for a job as a program tester after completing an online course
Of course, on its own that course doesn't have much value
But if you've put your knowledge to test, worked on it and expended what you know, then it is inconsequential that you got started from an online course
Online courses don't teach everything, of course. But they do a great job as a starting point, making stuff accessible in an easy to learn and affordable manner.

@MichaelFrank I always thought that John Carmack and Bob Weir in his younger pre-beard days could have been related

@bertieb sorry for bothering you but is this image inline? superuser.com/review/suggested-edits/873323 or it's just my pc being dumb XD the OP approved nonetheless

@CaldeiraG Image is inline yes

before the edit

It was not
I thought moving a part of the specific error from the title may hinder people searching for the error
I was happy with the rest of the edit though as it was useful

oh I understand now
thanks lol :D have a good day

"AMD Ryzen 3000 Announced: Five CPUs, 12 Cores for $499, Up to 4.6 GHz, PCIe 4.0, Coming 7/7"

I wonder if it's AMD to buy if I want to assemble gaming PC ...

10:51 AM
@CaldeiraG You too!

I would say yes at this point

Is it 5 CPUs with 12 Cores on 1 board or what?

noo, they released 5 CPU's i guess XD being the top-tier one the 12-core

@Boris_yo at the moment, AMD does look pretty tempting yes

11:07 AM
@bertieb So tory voters and UKIP voters have gone to brexit party instead
which will be even more helarious if brexit doesn't happen

@djsmiley2k I'd point out...
brexit party are in as MEPs
the very organisation they want to leave...

11:19 AM
@djsmiley2k Pretty much, mostly the latter

11:33 AM
@JourneymanGeek yes, this is the funny
now, if brexit doesn't happen, they have to either step down, or are stuck there, for X years

   <--

11:49 AM
@JourneymanGeek Price-wise?

In general

Even for gaming? Been a... while since I put together a gaming PC with AMD as the CPU

if it stays there it's really a promising line of CPU's
@bertieb I would say yes, I could argue all day about it but I can't now XD

12:08 PM
@CaldeiraG Interesting, I'm planning an upgrade at $some_point... will keep it in mind!

12:23 PM
@bertieb i'm on the same spot as you, I still have a i3 2100 XD not saying it's bad because I already put in a SSD running but it's getting older

Q: Are these (dis)assembly screw symbols standardised?

PF4PublicSometimes there are these two half-arrow symbols on PCBs and on enclosures. See the images, for examples. Those symbols are often placed near the screws, that are to be unscrewed upon disassembly. Are these symbols standardised? If yes, which standard they are from?

4:43 PM
@Biswapriyo probably not. Many features aren't cross-platform.
@NickAlexeev What about it?

@rahuldottech, nice job on the Wikipedia article, and well written. A minor suggestion if you wanted to enhance it. It could be useful to include a few words on the architecture and predominant features; maybe even an image or two if available. How does it feel to be a published author? :-)

@fixer1234 Thanks! Feels good!
I wasn't sure if the specs of the PCs would be too much information, and I wasn't sure how to fit them into the introduction. I also couldn't find information on all models (found what I did by browsing archived hp.com and old articles), so I figured that if anyone really wanted to know the specs they could look at the cited pages.
Also, I need to look up the image policy of wikipedia. Not sure how it works

@rahuldottech, yeah, I wasn't thinking full specs, just the basic class of architecture, and maybe any hardware characteristics that differentiated them or were the main selling points. But that would be enhancement. It's a great job as-is.

@fixer1234 Thanks! I'll add to it later, I'm sorta doing something else atm.
Also, poor internet connection rn.

9:46 PM
@bertieb, just saw your wasp nest problem from the other day. Is that still an issue? I've used one of those wasp/hornet sprays that squirts a stream from a safe distance. You squirt around the opening and saturate the nest. It soaks into the wasp paper and kills the ones inside, and they die from the exposure getting out of the hole. It can also be fun to stick a firecracker into the opening (but wear heavy clothing and thick gloves for that one).

AND WHY DOES IT SUCKS SO MUCH?
WHO MADE THE MTP PROTOCOL?
I have never made anything even remotely related to a protocol like that, and I bet even I could do a better job in one night while drunk on a bottle of vodka.

10:03 PM
Are "Unclear" flags appropriate for questions that are posted in languages other than English?

@MichaelFrank, that's what I use. Seems appropriate.

@fixer1234 I haven't gone back in since then so yes, probably :P
On a related note, I discovered a bees' nest in the ground under some leaves at my mum's
Not sure what to do about that, because killing bees just don't sit right with me
Good suggestion about the spray thing though, I might be able to skoosh and shut the door quickly... it's a tiny hut is the only thing!

10:22 PM
@bertieb If they're definitely bees, call a local apiary. They'll probably try and extract the swarm for relocation.

I heff picture!
I get from fone

My brother in law is a bee keeper. I'm kinda interested in them ha

Welp picture is potato quality
And not one of the better potatoes
Slightly clearer in video

They look like bumblebees
@bertieb I'd probably leave it. I don't think they nest permanently, so it'd be gone within a season.
You could put a pot with a hole in the top over it and prop up a small plate over the hole to keep the rain out if you want to make sure they're not accidentally smushed.

@MichaelFrank I'm all for it... unfortunately the nest is below a raised wooden wendyhouse type thing (cc @djsmiley2k), although that's selling it short as it's probably bigger than the garden shed my wasps have made a home in which is sitting maybe 5 or 6 feet off the ground
We've been clearing the garden -- 2 skips' worth and counting! -- and the wendyhouse isn't terribly structurally safe
so it needs the stuff cleared from under neath it before we either repair it, lower it to the ground or demolish it
unfortunately the bees' home is not a priority for the other folks involved
I'll raise the possibility of leaving for 3 months with me mum
But not my decision to make
We were kinda thinking since they got disturbed to that extent they might relocate
is that a thing?

10:38 PM
>|+|<

Or will they just keep doing their bee thing?
Haven't been back to look since yesterday

Not super sure about bumblebees, I know regular bees need to be well removed or they'll just fly back.
It's possible quite small though since the activity looks like it's mostly on the surface.

Hokay doke
Aye, there was a lot of stuff there till we moved it so it was well-protected

You might be able to get a shovel under the whole thing and lift it out safely to move it somewhere else.

I'll check tomorrow and report back

10:44 PM
Please do!

@MichaelFrank My butt just clenched at the thought of giving that a try
So probably not that
Seems like it would have a chance of backfiring catastrophically :P
Cheers for the advice :)

YOLO right?

If I mess up badly enough, we'll soon find out!

Just remember, bumblebees can sting more than once. ;P

Once is one time too many!
