@JourneymanGeek - What is most interesting about these prediction exploits is that both Intel and AMD both use the x86 architecture yet it appears that AMD successfully designed prediction without the exploits that Intel design suffers from.
I only use the word "appears" because I still believe AMD might be vulnerable and a proof of concept has not been found. For years researches thought it was possible, yet it took a good chunk of time, to actually prove that was the case.

@Ramhound yup
And tbh people probably look closer at Intel cause it's bigger

I personally think it's just a matter of time before AMD has the same issues.

@Ramhound I would not surprised if vulnerabilities were found in AMD processors.

These prediction exploits to various degrees were pretty universal (the 2018 exploits specifically) less MDS.

The fact that AMD's current installed base is so small makes it less useful to target AMD processors specifically when hunting for vulnerabilities.
Though clearly, AMD is doing something right that Intel isn't.

12:27 AM
Somebody tell me that is incredibly difficult to install a CPU in the incorrect orientation. My new build has been sitting here for 2 weeks. I am literally afraid to turn it on.

lol
@Ramhound It is. The processor will not fit in the socket the wrong way.

I suppose it's because there was more resistance on the leaver then I was expecting (or remember from my Haswell build)

Just press the power button :p

I am afraid of what will happen. It's not logical but I spent way too much money on the build
You know the build you create where you select literally every upgrade you want on the websites for those premium system builders? Yeah....I did that but built it myself

We spent $4,000 on Astaroth. I managed to bend pins on the processor the first time I put it in. After taking a precision screwdriver to it and trying again, the system powered on without incident.
The processor itself is $500, and was AMD's then-flagship Ryzen 7 1800X.

12:36 AM
@Ramhound it is

I guess what scares me is I initially placed the process in the incorrect orientation, didn't do anything but lift it up, and correct that mistake. crys a ltitle

1:10 AM
wonderful
It won't even turn on :$
there is no indication the motherboard evne has power..

Check power supply and power connections at the motherboard.
Make sure the power supply is on. If the supply is modular, make sure that the connectors are connected properly (there are supplies with connectors that aren't keyed properly and allow improper connections; this can result in damage to hardware)

cables were labeled and keyed so:$

Any indication that the power supply is operational? There's a couple of pins you can short on the main ATX12V cable harness to cause it to power on (PS_ON to any ground pin); don't have the pinout on hand, but if your PSU has colored wires on the ATX12V end (many newer ones don't), short the green wire to any black wire.
Doing this basically tells the PSU to turn on.

1:53 AM
power button on motherboard lights up.
i press it, nothing.
wonderful..
I am seriously stumped

any other lights on the motherboard?
there's usually LEDs replacing ye olde bios buzzer

no i dont see any other leds.
power led on the case would be optional with a power button on the motherboard one wouild think
(disconnected it to troubleshoot)

0_0
what motherboard? got a manual?

so the cmos and bios flashback lights are on. (if you press them)
z390 meg godlike

there's usually a ram/cpu etc

2:03 AM
the problem is the heatsink was a SOB to install. I am afraid to start over :$
dreading is more the applicabile description

page 57 of TFM
the english one
also since everyone does this....
did you plug in the CPU power?

yes

Apr 11 at 1:29, by bwDraco
(funnily enough, the charger I'm using is rated for 1.6A at 9V but is pumping 1.9A; it's running a bit hot but not dangerously so.)
It gets hot enough that the output drops about 0.10V to 0.15V under sustained load. Cooling it with a fan restores some of this voltage drop.

2:20 AM
power supply does even attempt to turn on...(it has fans) what in the world is going on. it giving the motherboard power but it won't even attempt to turn on :$

Check power button connection, and try using the power button on the motherboard itself.

it lights up but literally nothing happens
i would expect at least a fan to turn on :$

Remove all power from the system, wait a minute, and try again.
Also, have you tested the power supply itself?
(see "paper clip test")
Motherboard lighting up is just +5VSB (standby power), which is always on. The power supply hasn't actually started supplying the main power rails.

I guess what I will do is unplug all the modual cords, remove the pSU out of the case, so I can check all connections that way.
doesn't have to be "installed" for it to work.
got a rubberized mat ...:$

What power supply?
Do you have a part list on PCPartPicker?

One moment...
Wait a sec. This is a serious high-end PSU with digital (DSP) regulation. Once again, have you tested the PSU itself?

I have not. Do i need to unplug all the connectors from the motherboard in order to do that?

Yes, you do.

I was afraid you were going to say that

Connect only the 24-pin ATX12V cable harness to the power supply; leave nothing connected to the PC itself.
Then, with the retaining clip on the ATX12V connector facing up, short the pin fourth from the left in the top row of the connector (that's the power-on pin) to an adjacent pin (third or fifth pin) in the top row.
When you do, the power supply should turn on. If it doesn't, replace the power supply.

3:02 AM
or try a known good PSU ;p
Its worth remembering some PSUs won't start up without a load as well

3:23 AM
@Aibobot This is a digitally-regulated power supply, so that most definitely isn't the case.

still can't wake up, pretty sure i'm ill./

2:21 PM
@djsmiley2k get lots of rest

this was unusual, I just lost 40 rep points 'cos a user was removed!
must have been a fan of some sort!
did anybody else lose quite a few rep points from a user being removed today or yesterday?
I wonder if it was one guy that upvoted tons of stuff

@barlop old news

how many did you lose?

here? about 150
some folks lost a few K

wow

2:30 PM
@JourneymanGeek I lost a bunch across the network too. Who was removed?

@rahuldottech I don't know for certain

@JourneymanGeek ah ok

There's a lot of speculation

@rahuldottech with two kids? hahaha

I don't think its particularly healthy

2:35 PM
I only lost one or two upvotes/.
But, I feel like unless someone was removed because they were doing something bad (i.e. malnipulating votes somehow), upon removal their rep shouldn't just poof
If that worked in politics for example, Brexit would of gone poof the moment Cameron stepped down

not a great analogy 'cos iirc cameron was against brexit

I don't doubt person X was against having all their votes deleted.

ah ok

but yes terrible anology
however I'm ill :d

A: Massive user removal in one night?

animusonThere's no such thing as a database cleanup that would affect reputation, because we don't automatically delete profiles that have voted. One or more users deleted their profiles, and there's really not anything further we can discuss about the topic for privacy reasons.

@barlop ^^^^^^

3:10 PM
I mean, I lost 1 vote, on one site
I have 3 answers there
how long do you think it'll take to figure out which answer it is?
now, times that by the 20-30, 100,1000? people who want to know
it wouldn't take long to figure out who deleted their account

no one knows who voted for what

except when said users leave a comment such as (upvote for the lols it gave me) and such

they could be lying

they could. yes.
but when you've got a 'large rep' user who's mysteriously not on the site anymore
and a load of reps also disappeared
I mean, I can see all the users on all the sites, right?

unless they voted lots

3:13 PM
and all their rep, right?

and didn't post much

It really wouldn't be hard to build a scraper that.... just existed for these situations
Also, is this the fabled 'openess and honestness with the community' that we were promised? hahaha

heh
Quite honestly?
By all accounts - there's a huge mess behind this

3:42 PM
Well Amazon does not deliver on Memorial day which sucks
I really hope this problem is my PSU not my motherboard or CPU
lol

4:22 PM
starting to wonder if the standoffs could be the issue. I seriously doubt that because they all lined up exactly where the holes were

Is what legal?
downloading a video off Facebook?

5:11 PM
(8C/16T Coffee Lake-R @ 4.0-5.0 GHz, Turbo Boost to 5.0 GHz on all cores)
But how much power will this draw?
I think they're gearing up for a fight. Tomorrow night, we're going to be seeing a keynote at COMPUTEX from AMD.

> Technically the CPU has a base frequency of 4.0 GHz, however it will only ever go down to that amount based on a default Intel BIOS (no consumer board uses the base BIOS specifications).

@Biswapriyo Yes. Unless DRM protected, downloading websites and any embedded content therein is legal.

Eh, that depends. If it's personal use only or for archival purposes, it's freely available (not behind a paywall), and it's not an unreasonably large amount of content, it's probably legal as fair use. But this is a complex subject, and nontrivial cases would need to be decided in court.
(the "freely available" part comes into play in the fourth part of the four-part test for fair use, economic impact on the copyright holder)
If it's not freely available, than personal use is likely not an excuse because you're basically pirating the content.
With the exception of small pieces of content (e.g. a movie clip of up to 30 seconds, or a few paragraphs quoted from a book), and even that depends on the nature of the work, the quoted content, and what you're using it for.
It's a complicated subject and I'm not an attorney. I simply happened to have studied the subject for a term paper several years back. Talk to a qualified attorney if you need specific legal advice.

but... why o_O
@Ramhound are you sure the socket it's plugged into works?
I know it sounds possibly like a stupid question, but the amount of customers I've dealt with where we found the socket on the wall was dead...

5:26 PM
@djsmiley2k Yeah, pointless edit.

k good, not just me :D

Q: How to remove the first n lines from multiple files to a single output file using windows based program

loveman2019I am using the python script below to remove the first n lines of all text files in a folder but I want the deleted lines to be "outputted" into a single file. Here is my code: import glob myfiles = glob.glob("*.txt") for file in myfiles: lines = open(file).readlines() open(file, 'w').wr...

I want to help them
but me just giving them the code doesn't really help

@bwDraco also very much depends on what country you're in, don't forget that
Assuming US laws apply to everyone isn't smart

Yeah. This is for the United States. It's similar for most Western countries, but can be very different elsewhere.

5:50 PM
@rahuldottech i predict by tomorrow we'll know who was removed, and all this 'secrecy' is pointless.
@bwDraco it's on facebook.
Also, no one gives a crap if it's 'legal' to download something from facebook
Please try pratiacing being to the point, and concise.
No one thinks you're a lawyer, and no one is asking for legal advice on su ~(unless their very stupid, in which case they get whatever they deserve.)

@DavidPostill Did this ever change?
@DavidPostill They just added a setting for this in the latest update :)

@djsmiley2k Was my behavior disruptive or annoying?
If it sounded arrogant... feel free to flag. I'm sorry.

6:07 PM
I'm not gonna flag it for any reason
flags are stupid, pointless things.
tools of those who can't use their voice properly.

The "please try" part makes it sound like I did something seriously wrong, that I actually caused disruption.

I personally found it pointless
others may like what you said and the level of detail you went into
/me shrugs
i'm feeling rather ill today, so maybe i'm on edge.

@rahuldottech Really? You know what is is? I will update my answer ;)

@DavidPostill about:addons > click on extension > "Run in Private Windows"
I'm on FF 67.0 (64-bit)

@rahuldottech So am I.

By default, all that were previously installed before updating to the latest version will be allowed to run in private. Any new ones you install won't

@rahuldottech Ah. Thanks.

@DavidPostill You don't see the setting?
Cool, no probs

7:24 PM
@rahuldottech Yes. Hadn't looked there recently.

7:39 PM
@rahuldottech Answer has been updated and you have been credited :)
> As pointed out in chat by rahuldottech, Firefox 67.0 has made some changes to extensions and private browsing:

@DavidPostill cool!

TIL that Scientology conducts workshops in Delhi?
Or should I say "brainwashing and manipulation camps"?

8:16 PM
@djsmiley2k Please don't answer off-topic questions ...

@DavidPostill if there's a question and the top answer is currently invalit/outdated, the appropriate thing to do is to write a new answer and leave a comment on the top answer?

@rahuldottech Yes. Exactly that.

@DavidPostill thanks

8:58 PM
@rahuldottech Thanks.

@MichaelFrank lol, for what?

The hilarious video.

ah lol

9:13 PM
@rahuldottech Oh wow, the buttons... smh

@MichaelFrank buttons?

@rahuldottech Did you even watch the video?!

@MichaelFrank ...yeah
there were buttons in it?

Yea, the guy with the buttons on his shirt done up all wrong.

oh lmao
he was actually pretty good on the calls

9:42 PM
@DavidPostill Not quite pointless. Input order for keyboard shortcuts matters.
If I hit Alt-Tab it's going to do the action Alt-Tab does.
If I hit Alt-Tab-Shift it's going to do Alt-Tab and ignore Shift
C-Ctrl is not going to do anything.

@djsmiley2k - It’s the same outlet my current machine is plugged into. I suppose it’s possible it’s a power issue but I nothing is happening

10:21 PM
Eh UK eu election results starting to be announced. 🤦‍♂️
@MichaelFrank hmmm no
It does alt tab in reverse order
Oh wait hmm now I see.
Did they change the order??!

10:40 PM
You should hold the modifiers before hit tab, that's what I mean.

10:53 PM
Yeah

From an accessibility point of view, you might need to enter keyboard shortcuts using sticky keys. If you tried enter it in as Alt then Tab then Shift... It would not do what you expected.

@djsmiley2k Not looking entirely favourable for Remain (yet?)
Still pretty split

Phones not showing me. Oh rly? Wow ok. 48/52? ;)

11:12 PM
Shameless plug of a script I just wrote: github.com/lukebarone/email_list

@djsmiley2k Heavier gains for Brexit party than LD + Change + Green waffles
I'm taking nonsese as I looked at the wrong column of numbers
More seats, vote share is close-ish
And it's probably easier if I just paste the BBC infographic

@CanadianLuke Have a star! Looks useful.

Thanks :)
I'm the sole person who edits the website for an organization, and they've been known to suck at communication... I thought this would be a good way to improve it

Sometimes I wish I had a job where I was most of IT.... but then I realise that it's kinda nice having an entire IT organisation above me as well.

11:28 PM
I hate some of the work I have to do, but I'm also the kind of person where I know if I want it done right, I just gotta do it myself
But I do spend about 33% of my time teaching the 4 techs below me
I enjoy that a lot :)
We'll see how I feel about imaging after this summer... We may have found a way to image without touching every system, and I'm really looking forward to testing that

That's part of what I would love to be able to do. Having a more hands on influence to the total IT environment from start to finish.

Talk about frustrating
I have this old 1507 VM
Updates will not install, Feature updates are rolled back due to a migration issue, WSUS offline only supports LTSB (but that doesn't apply to my install).

I've been deploying LTSB to all my NT4-domain schools, and 1803 at my one AD school. This summer, I'll update those 1803 systems to 19xx, and setup one more school for AD

11:44 PM
I can't update to 1903 (or whatever) because I have more than one internal HDD. :|

... Is there a bug or something relating to having multiple HDDs?

I think it's related to the issue where you can't update if you have a USB drive connected.
I think they're worried they'll accidentally attach to the wrong drive after rebooting and mangle your data.

Sucky
For the updates, I'm going to turn on all the computers, remotely, then I'll walk around, logging in and starting the upgrade
At my other 4 schools, it'll just be a fresh image
