12:38 AM
@NickAlexeev no
@CanadianLuke I did it on SU
I tell folks to donate to local dog shelters

Husky rescues are hot topics at the moment.

@MichaelFrank I have always really wanted a husky
Like, I realllllllllllllllllllllllly want a husky
But keeping one here in this climate would mean killing it slowly and painfully

They're not good pets.
For 90% of people that want one.

@MichaelFrank I've done a lot of research. They're perfect for me.
Except... this climate.

1:04 AM
Yup
they're adorable. look like wolves...
and are strong, mouthy and kinda hard to train apparently

I'm defo getting one if I ever end up living in the hills or in a cold place

with fences over 2metres high.

yess

They're basically canine cats.
But I agree, I would definitely get a Husky if I had the space and time/energy.

@MichaelFrank feline dogs

1:11 AM
Yes.
That's what I mean.

lol
Ow. Hit my toe on a brick. Ow. Ow. Ow.

the most catlike dogs I've seen are shibas
my 'dream' dog's a colllie though
not counting my current roomie

oh god
verge has these "actors" doing reviews on its Instagram account
And honestly I don't even know why but I find the whole thing... kinda repulsive?
They're like overacting and speaking with crappy slang and not even good at what they do

You're gatekeeping XD

omg is this my first time! I'm so excited! hahahahaha lmaoooooo who knew
</fake-verge-actor-imitation>
@JourneymanGeek seriously tho explain how I am
Hmm. I'm just saying they have non-technical people pretending to do tech stuff
And they're doing it all wrong, trying to be "hip" and use slang and idk

1:25 AM
Like holding the tip of the soldering iron?

@rahuldottech gatekeeping ._.

@MichaelFrank lol. You've seen that amazing The Verge PC building video?

MAYBE THEY ARE INTERESTED AND DIDN'T HAVE THE SAME BAD INFLUENCES WE DID

@JourneymanGeek Yeah, but they literally influence millions of users on just Instagram with poor quality content

@rahuldottech I'm saying tech stuff shouldn't be restricted to very geeky folks
@rahuldottech and a few thousand are going to end up going deeper
and like us

1:28 AM
Oh god. Have I caught the Big Geekā„¢?

Its ok
we all do it

@JourneymanGeek Of course, I completely agree. But I don't have a problem with them not going deep. I have a problem with poor content - especially since it's not targeted at geeks, so it's very likely that they'll trust what they're learning

@rahuldottech and anyone interested enough will realise its crap
and go deeper

@JourneymanGeek nah man. They just put out a video on OnePlus 7 vs. Pixel 3A. It was low quality in many ways, but I know so many people who are the type to trust it, and not do further research.
And then it'll come up in conversations and they'll influence those even less technically literate with that false info

@rahuldottech I haven't

1:33 AM
@MichaelFrank Boy do I have a treat for you

@rahuldottech shrug its a phone

Its pretty much the most critical piece of semi disposable personal computing people own, and its getting to the point where it dosen't really matter what you own
@rahuldottech and that video started a conversation on where he went wrong

@JourneymanGeek (hint: everywhere)
But I completely get what you're saying.

So I'm in one of those funny moods. I tried to do something, I failed hard. I had someone basically school me on how I went wrong, and its been educational

1:35 AM
wait... tweezers?

@MichaelFrank dude wait for it

wait wait
anti static?

HAHAHHAHAHAHHAHAHA
I love it when people react to this video for the first time

Ok, lets see
a pudding spoon, cable ties, a swiss army knife (._.) and .... that's not an anti static bracelet

@JourneymanGeek Hah, you guys do that to me like... basically all the time?

1:37 AM
but he called them tweezers

dude get to the actual building

@rahuldottech true
so - I basically got everything wrong

hammer it in?

and then I got something that bit me in the ass the last time wrong as well

@JourneymanGeek It's fun, y'know. When I learn stuff here. I mean, I say stupid stuff and get corrected, but at least now my knowledge has been expanded. I like learning. And you guys share stuff and correct me :)

1:39 AM
"screwing with confidence, but not screwing in to hard...."
TWSS

@JourneymanGeek lol exactly what I was thinking

Reminds me of that Tenacious D song...

@JourneymanGeek ...otherwise you might crack it

Oh dear
or split it, but you'd need to read grunts to get the full horror of the statement.
oh god
he is really using the SAK?

That graphics card has a perspex cover, that's kinda cool

1:41 AM
@JourneymanGeek what's that?

swiss army knife

wait? What was the pun?

@JourneymanGeek ah lol
Yeh, he uses it

@rahuldottech Its not that bad. so far
he called the PSU a brick

@JourneymanGeek He also just called it a CPU cooler hose
I don't think that's the right terminology?

1:43 AM
that's not inaccurate
its a radiator, hose tubing and waterblock

@JourneymanGeek I've never heard it being called a hose before. Only piping.

we'd call it tubing I guess?

Huh, TIL
Or tubing, yeah

The amount of time that CPU socket has been exposed is making me nervous.

but its a tube that transfers water
hah
COnfession

1:44 AM
wait... no more paste

I'm scared to do that and got the shop to install the processor for me

STHAP
STAHP

there's paste on the waterblock

@JourneymanGeek Yeah, but water comes out of a hose. Not recommended inside PCs?
"It's kinda daunting at first so you're always gonna have to find the one that will fit"
...oh dear

they've not used slots in processors since probably before @rahuldottech was born
@rahuldottech said the actress to the bishop

1:45 AM
@JourneymanGeek as compared to a socket?

wait.
he's adding MORE paste?
wait

@JourneymanGeek This reference is lost to me

@rahuldottech ooooh yeah
@rahuldottech means the same as TWSS
but britisher.

@JourneymanGeek ah ok lol

"top glass, back glass, side glass" whut?

1:46 AM
@JourneymanGeek CPUs used to... slot in?

@rahuldottech for about 2 generations

HE CALLED IT A SLOT
(sorry I'm watching behind you guys here)

Slot 1 refers to the physical and electrical specification for the connector used by some of Intel's microprocessors, including the Pentium Pro, Celeron, Pentium II and the Pentium III. Both single and dual processor configurations were implemented. Intel switched back to the traditional socket interface with Socket 370 in 1999. == General == With the introduction of the Pentium II CPU, the need for greater access for testing had made the transition from socket to slot necessary. Previously with the Pentium Pro, Intel had combined processor and cache dies in the same Socket 8 package. These...

wow TIL

the reason for that is cool
so they basically wanted to add more cache - but that lowered yields
so they literally had external cache soldered onto a daughterboard with the processor

1:49 AM
oh wow
"installed a buuuuuunch of drivers"
Dude, this is 2019. That's not really a thing anymore.

I mean I have literally never built a PC in my life
And even I could do a better job

hah
I've built PCs from before you were born
and I still occationally go "huh?"

"I can get around 300 FPS"
uh

Don't get cocky ;)

1:50 AM
um
that's... a thing?
@JourneymanGeek lol ofc not

my dad asked me for a USB to care 12v adaptor to plug in a car camera...
I asked him "whyyyyyy? just plug it into a PC"
mind blown

*wears rubber band on wrist*
HEY GUYS CHECK OUT THIS STYLISH ANTI-STATIC WRISTBAND YO!
Honestly I wonder if the writer was really pissed with management and wrote this piece before resigning as like one mega troll?

I think they were just trying to make it a bit hip and exciting.

33 mins ago, by rahuldottech
And they're doing it all wrong, trying to be "hip" and use slang and idk
Looks like they haven't learnt

Oh ha

2:04 AM
@JourneymanGeek lol he talks about using the CPU "applicator" but then just drops it in lmao
> Ironically, The Verge's Producer and Lead Video Director, Phil Esposito, once tweeted that Tech YouTubers (many of whom do a better, if not superb, job with such videos) ā€œare not journalists.ā€
lolololol
what does that have to do

so
I ordered one of these aliexpress.com/item/…

at least get the "tech" bit of "tech youtuber" right

I intend to build the shittiest, cheapest DIY router possible

@JourneymanGeek Uh, Orange Pis are not known for their quality

@rahuldottech yup

2:08 AM
They often have hardware/specs on paper but they're impossible to get working

@rahuldottech I literally just need the OS and the two physical ports to work

That said, the last review I watched of one was more than two years ago, so...
@JourneymanGeek which ports?

both of them

ah Ethernet?
Sorry, didn't look at the image before

(more or less I want to play with writing a scripted, semi automated way of getting my base router setup up)
or maybe doing it with ansible

2:10 AM
hah, that antenna has shrink tube on it

and stuff
@rahuldottech kindly read the second thing I said about this ;p

No USB? interesting.
lol okay
> the shittiest, cheapest
y tho

Reasons. obviously!

Hm, today's gonna be a very interesting day
Gotta meet a friend who I'm not likely to meet every again, get some government documentation ID stuff sorted, study, drink lots of coffee, meet another friend.
So I'm back to living alone now. Have been for a couple weeks now. It's fun.

@rahuldottech correct question

2:22 AM
@JourneymanGeek hm?

It runs ubuntu server so hopefully I can get a good enough approximation of my current network setup
which means I can test things first, see how the bits fall together, before I do it on the router that runs my network segment without taking down the whole network

ah, makes sense
hah, I just make all changes to my production system. I like living on the edge.

the alternative is about 150 usd minimum - and overkill
@rahuldottech oh, I was doing that too

(Actually I don't even have an audience I get maybe 60 unique views a day and I'm sure most are bots so no one really cares if I break stuff rip)
Wow, the right-wing parties were big winners this EU election
That's probably not a good thing

@rahuldottech My current router build was mildly inspired by github.com/nokia/intel-nuc-router and arstechnica.com/gadgets/2016/04/… (and later iterations)
My build is a modern, streamlined version of the latter. I'd also like a way to do what the former does and have a more automated way to get a router up - partially cause it helps you work out the mistakes you made in the process

2:30 AM
Was thinking about AMD's claimed 13-15% IPC gains... this is likely to be amplified in gaming workloads.
Previous generations of AMD Ryzen processors were only a few percent behind Intel in benchmarks like Cinebench, but performed significantly worse clock-for-clock in games. Cinebench isn't particularly sensitive to memory latency, but games often do care about it.
(COMPUTEX keynote slide deck, via AnandTech)

@JourneymanGeek Might look into that Ars guide tonight..

@MichaelFrank mine's slightly more up to date, though I kinda run an odd setup
I also do ipv6

Although we should note that there's a small increase in clock frequency between the two processors, the gains shown here are, in a number of cases, well in excess of 15% clock-for-clock.

argh why did twitter onebox break?

2:35 AM
@rahuldottech That link returns an HTTP 404.

Does it work now?

Ok, that went through, but it didn't onebox.

@bwDraco twitter hasn't oneboxed here for a couple weeks
32
Q: Twitter Oneboxing in chat appears broken

NzallTwitter Oneboxing in chatrooms appears to be broken at the time of posting. Pasting a Twitter link in chat does not change the chat message to a onebox of the tweet in question.

Thoughts? It's a bit like shouting at a kid cause they tripped over.

2:38 AM
@MichaelFrank journeymangeek.com/?p=196 - my base setup . I also did ipv6 tunneling journeymangeek.com/?p=228

On the other hand, your tweet about Inconsolata was interesing.

Lisa Su did state that they focused a lot on gaming performance, especially single-threaded games and lower resolution. Clearly, there's been work on improving the performance of the processor's memory subsystem because a lot of games didn't like the latency the Infinity Fabric introduced. Among other things, AMD doubled the size of the L2$ and L3$, with the latter being a colossal 64 MB on the Ryzen 9 3900X.

@rahuldottech when faced with <redacted> one needs to act with grace, dignity, and a wit that will cut that <redacted>

@MichaelFrank hah talked about it here
@JourneymanGeek yes, one should. My bad.
I think I was slightly drunk when I tweeted that. Or half asleep. That's no excuse tho.

2:42 AM
I'm not a font designer, but the response really annoyed me lol:
May 17 at 11:27, by rahuldottech
"it gives the font character" at the cost of readability? Lmao ok.
> the h in ghost is actually a little ghost waving to you

1 hour later…
3:51 AM
Okay just something I want to throw out there
Some people say second impressions matter, some say they don't
Idk really
But there's this one journalist in the tech space. Does a lot of high-profile interviews
The first time I consumed any of their content was when I listened to a podcast they put out.
They came off as biased and judgemental, saying stuff that they clearly were very ill-informed about
This was a few months ago. Since then I've seen a lot of articles written by them. But honestly I've never been able to take any of them very seriously due to that initial impression of them being a poor journalist
Now maybe that was a one-off thing. Maybe they're actually good at their job. But idk.
Am I in the wrong here?

4:25 AM
Maybe they just had a bad interview?
You could always give them another shot.
Recently we went to the church my father-in-law plays at on Sundays, they have a new minister there that I haven't seen before. As soon as he started his message for the day, I had to walk out. It just felt and sounded fake and theatrical.
We actually ended up catching up with him after the service and ended up chatting with him for over an hour and that's just how he is as a person. It completely changed my point of view about him.
So yes, second impressions definitely matter.

and third and forth...
I've had my opinion of someone swing about half a dozen times in a year ;p

Will there be any big difference between sh abc.sh or bash abc.sh? The file is without execute permission.

This is true.
@Biswapriyo sh is probably an alias to bash

4:40 AM
@MichaelFrank Hmm.. It's true. But if a system has both binary...

4:53 AM
Could be a sym or hardlink
LIFEBOOK-E734  ~ file -h /bin/sh
/bin/sh: symbolic link to dash
LIFEBOOK-E734  ~ find -L /bin -samefile /bin/sh
/bin/dash
/bin/sh
/bin/sh.distrib
Some good answers here:

Q: Difference between sh and bash

Weiwei YangWhen writing shell programs, we often use /bin/sh and /bin/bash. I usually use bash, but I don't know what's the difference between them. What's main difference between bash and sh? What do we need to be aware of when programming in bash and sh?

2 hours later…
6:55 AM
@bertieb Actual nest? Bee keepers will happily take bees (normally for free)
but some bees are solitary and just dig a tunnel in the ground.

@avazula might know about bees

7:27 AM
Hi guys
I have a doubt about VS Code
I am trying to run Git Bash in integrated mode from VS Code
I tried everything stated here
184
Q: How do I use Bash on Windows from the Visual Studio Code integrated terminal?

Walid OmonosVisual Studio Code on Windows uses PowerShell by default as the integrated terminal. If you want to use Bash from Visual Studio Code, what steps should be followed?

However its still not working, git bash is opening as a standalone window

@RaphX I don't know if you'd get an answer here. Try asking a question on the main site or on stackoverflow chat

morning

@JourneymanGeek Mmh?
It may be bumblebees as well
@djsmiley2k Indeed. If they are actual bees, they may take the nest for free. And if you're able and willing to, they may even put the hive in your garden and teach you how to take care of them

7:50 AM
@djsmiley2k @avazula These looked more like bumble bees.
Large, fuzzy, mostly black with a thin yellow stripe or two.
nesting on the ground.

That's what I think too

@rahuldottech Your twitter display name breaks screen readers horribly, FYI
@djsmiley2k See vid, it's a pretty small thing in the ground

@bertieb If I were a beekeeper, I'd probably be pretty annoyed if I came expecting a hive and found 10 bumblebees...

ugh.... why does FF insist on injecting new icons into the toolbar when they are already nicely hidden in the menu?

@bertieb oh damn, never occurred to me. I'm usually careful about that stuff. I'll fix it ASAP

7:57 AM
@avazula wow that's cool.
@MichaelFrank o_O Can they?!

@djsmiley2k The females, yes. Males usually don't sting. Females do when they're threatened (or their children)

Ah ok, saw vid now, yup that looks like a 'normal' nest, not solitaries that i was talki nabout
Like this.
@avazula TIL!!!

:)

8:12 AM
@rahuldottech When I found out how screen readers render that kind of text that was my reaction too!
Would never have thought
I try to add the extended description to media I upload too, for screen readers; can't remember if that lives in a setting you have to enable on your account tho
@MichaelFrank Heh; not that we have it here, but would make for a an interesting Craigslist ad
"Bumblebees for sale. 10p each or all ~ten for free (or best offer). Buyer to arrange collection."

6 hours ago, by rahuldottech
Gotta meet a friend who I'm not likely to meet every again, get some government documentation ID stuff sorted, study, drink lots of coffee, meet another friend.
@bertieb the friend I met today? He's completely blind
Incidentally we were discussing screen readers today, and I promised to make him some stuff to help him
I'll send you a link to it when I'm done later tonight

JAWS is the standard for screen readers
the issues most blind people have is with non-semantic websites

@Burgi he uses both NVDA and JAWS
And also some really cool Android thing that allows him to control everything through gestures on a completely black screen
(since screen is never on, battery also lasts much, much longer)
Apparently WhatsApp is super accessible for him to use. Which is good to hear

@rahuldottech slightly surprised about that

my GF is a support teacher for a blind girl
i went to the manchester wordcamp last year and there were some great talks on website accessibility
the first one was an amazing talk

8:25 AM
@rahuldottech Oh cool!
Must be tough being blind

when we were in NYC there was braille EVERYWHERE
compared to the UK, NYC was hugely more accessible
one thing they did lack was visually impaired enabled street crossings
in the UK they have the knobbly pavements and beeps

@Burgi And the rotating dealie under the crossing button control!

i've looked for those and still haven't seen one

In the UK?

8:40 AM
yeah
maybe i'm not fondling the crossing button box enough

No comment
;-P

ā
;p

9:02 AM
@Burgi it's normally a hole, because some nobber has nicked the twirly bit

I have 150 GB of Twitch.tv VoDs on my computer, AND on my iPad Mini 2019 in the VLC app. I'm planning on reinstalling Windows 10 later this week, but I'm wondering: is it possible to transfer these files back from the iPad VLC app to my PC so I don't need to redownload them if needed?

Oh that timing
just du'd my own un-uploaded Twitch recordings
(I have no helpful advice on the matter of iPads)

Note: they're not my own channel VoDs, they're livestreams I downloaded from a streamer I like to watch but couldn't completely watch live. Some of them are no longer available since he forgot to turn them into highlights
Though I have already watched those so it wouldn't be too much of a loss if they are lost

did you see that a load of educational video producers have launched their own streaming service?

Yeah. I really don't like this trend of everyone with a moderately significant viewbase launching their own service, especially if it's a paid service
This is pretty much the same problem me and the other Arqade regulars have with game launchers: everyone wants to have their own game launcher so they can get a larger share of the profit and the gamer ends up having to install a dozen different launchers

9:13 AM
yeah
at the moment, I have checks
steam, uplay and epic, and I do have but don't use an EA origin account

@Nzall well GOG is launching a new version of galaxy that is meant to bridge all the services
@Nzall their main rationale is that they are too reliant on YT for their revenue stream
YT keeps changing the algorythm which can be the death knell for smallish channels

I'm not kidding either. if I look at what game launchers I have (including game-based games): Battle.net, Steam, Origin, Uplay, Epic Games Store, GOG Galaxy, Beamdog Launcher, Rockstar Social Club, GW2 launcher, plus around 4 separate addon managers for WoW because of a similar reason
@Burgi Yeah, and this seems like it might be something interesting since it allows users to define their own launchers

Discord sorta consolidates them as well, doesn't it?
Err no... looks like it's just Steam

@Burgi I still grumble that YT seems to recommend 'popular' videos now
Time was, used to be if you were watching a video with a handful of views you got related videos also with a handful of views
Now you just get whatever popular anodyne crap with an attention-grabbing thumbnail that happens to be 'hot' that particular day/week/month
"Hey, looks like you watched this 25 part series on a niche game. I guess you want to watch 8 SECRETS OF THE AVIATION INDUSTRY next, huh?"
(thumbnail with title, a stock photo of a plane and someone looking 'shocked')
grumble, grumble
Old Man BertieB doesn't want your youtubes!
Somewhat hypocritically - some might say extremely hypocritically - I'm investigating scripted uploads to YT at the moment to clear the huge backlog of footage I have

9:30 AM
@bertieb I pretty much ignore anything on Youtube that's not my subscription inbox
And weirdly enough, I haven't yet encountered that "content creator video doesn't appear in your inbox" bug yet

I guess that's the way to go
Reckon I produce more than I consume though
Which brings to mind a line from one of the great cult comedies of last decade:
> I'm one of the few people you'll meet who's written more books than they've read.
oh my, Darkplace was 15 years ago
feelsoldman.jpg

9:52 AM
veritasium did a great video about the issues with youtube

10:06 AM
@Nzall that whole thing is utter bollox I'm sure
I don't think it ever happened, people are just dumb, and thought that the homepage of 'reccomended videos' would always be subscription videos, then were shocked when they were missing some.
I find it amusing how it's all like 'Give us money on patreon, and then sign up to our seperate service here, and buy our stuff here, and we need more of your money'

there does need to be a rival to youtube

Reddit tho.

Yeah
Glass houses amirite?

dat ui.
Anyone claiming stuff about youtube's UI, other than YouTube, and university researchers who've actually done research on it, are talking utter and entire BS.
'Bad' is subjective.
If you really believe youtube just roll out changes, without doing proper UI and UX testing first....

@djsmiley2k What people are saying isn't that they release poorly UI/UX tested changes, but rather that the changes they are making are negatively affecting the users of the platform, both creators and consumers
Like, a chef can definitely take a recipe for chocolate mousse and change it so that instead of chocolate it works with coffee, including the texture and consistency, but if people want chocolate mousse you're not going to make them happy with coffee mousse

11:18 AM
@Nzall subjective.
No one who's happy with the change (or not bothered by it) is shouting about it.
And I've seen very very very little backlash to this, compared to the backlash for some things they've done

11:39 AM
@JourneymanGeek I have a very major hardware mod planned for my laptop

gonna stick a raspi inside it?

12:20 PM
@djsmiley2k nah something very cool. Will share details later
Perhaps on riot
Going to take a nap now, goodnight

1 hour later…
1:41 PM
@rahuldottech cool :)

2 hours later…
3:29 PM
The war is on.

Quick! Someone tell Iran

Different markets, though. AMD is aiming at the desktop, while Intel's aiming at mobile.
And AMD is still very seriously lacking in mobile power management.

3:53 PM
Also, we're missing lots of information. I get the feeling that the IPC claim is apples and oranges and we need to wait for more information.
No clear winner. Products are for different market segments.
