4:00 PM
Some of the rudest people I've met outside of Britain. Actually, my English guests have been quite ok.

where is your airbnb?
in NYC?

@Burgi Bombay, India.

lol

But people from NYC do occasionally turn up here.

thats a bit far from time square :)

4:01 PM
It is, indeed.

me and my GF are planning a trip to NYC

@Burgi I hope you have fun.
Good place to go dancing, probably.

@bwDraco in fact i'm going to bug you every weekday to ask you how many jobs you've applied for
btw, there were 349 jobs posted in the last 3 days
you have a busy weekend coming up ;)

The problem is, my father has always looked at full-time employment as a far-fetched possibility, not something I should be able to do with little difficulty.

4:06 PM
if it is less than 5 a day i'm going to get @JourneymanGeek to phone your mother and tell her you have missed 200 job opportunities that day

@bwDraco great chance to learn humility and build up people's skills

then prove the guy wrong

@Burgi Your strategy is to apply for everything in sight, continuously?

@FaheemMitha yes

yup

4:07 PM
Easy, @Burgi. I am just starting to transition out of a oppressive position.

cause most of it will not get a response
so you shotgun resumes + target a few

@Burgi Sounds exhausting.
Plus, what happens if you get a job you don't like?

@FaheemMitha its why you only do it 3 days a week
you suck it up

@Burgi Oh. And spend the other 4 days recovering?
@Burgi A phrase I kind of hate.

we've all done jobs we hate

4:09 PM
yup

but it is easier to find a better job while you are working

yup
(I mean, look at me now? ;p)

@Burgi Wouldn't you be busy doing the job? Or is it a psychological thing?

Quality over quantity.

@Burgi Most people, certainly.
Possibly not Ivanka Trump, for example.

4:16 PM
@FaheemMitha possibly

@FaheemMitha that's irrelevant to this conversation

@rahuldottech I wasn't aware this conversation has irrelevancies.

nepotism aside, she has to deal with being the daughter of the world's most despised man. that is a fulltime job in itself... ;)

@Burgi Yes, poor woman. My heart bleeds for her.
She looks really downtrodden, too.

@bwDraco IMO it boils down to this. You're an adult. I know your dad has expectations and whatever, and that's okay. But you really need to think about and for yourself. And instead of talking about what you're going to do, you should do it first, and then tell us what you accomplished. That way, we'll all he proud of you :)

4:20 PM
afk
sorry before i go....
@bwDraco you need to act fast, the colleges and universities will be kicking out the next lot of graduates in the next few months. you want to get hired before then because they will be cheaper and not have a 2 year employment gap to explain.

It's not a pure employment gap because I am still employed part-time for my college.
Albeit in a different field.

4:38 PM
i feel my point remains

1 hour later…
5:44 PM
So... over the last few days, I've been looking for an appropriate power supply to drive a high-power Delta fan at a reasonable speed while not being too noisy. 5V isn't enough, and current draw dramatically ramps up from about 5.5V up. I was running it off 7.2V camera batteries but I grew tired of constantly recharging them and eventually wearing them down.
I wound up using this:
I talked about a 9V linear supply yesterday but it was overloading the supply. Using the supply's load limit to govern the total power output isn't exactly safe, and it did make the adapter run extremely hot (in excess of 180 °F).
Looks like this 6V supply is exactly what I need.
And it's a switching supply, so it's far more efficient.
The end goal? To actively ventilate the room when it's cool outside.
Apr 30 at 15:54, by bwDraco
Well... I used to do free cooling. I ran a window fan overnight, controlled by a timer so that it would stop before the temperatures went back up.
Except that in this house, I can't really install a window fan, so I have to resort to a ghetto solution using a Delta fan and various power sources to drive it.

Noise is far more tolerable, at 47 dBA from where I normally sit, and I don't have to worry about recharging batteries any more.
But it is pushing the supply to its limits; it's rated to 6V 1A and given a higher-current 6V source, it would be running at closer to 1.2-1.3A. (It's outputting 5.8V with a load of just over 1A.)
It's not tripping the overload protection, but I'll need to watch the thermals.

@bwDraco So, you spent the last few days worrying about speccing a power supply. That's a few days you should have spent applying for jobs. Applying for for jobs is a job. Unemployed folks in the UK are expected to spend 37.5 hours a week applying for jobs.

It's not just a power supply.
I was very busy with housework lately FWIW.
Like I said, I am restarting my job search and will probably begin sending new applications next week.

I was lazy and only applied for around 10 jobs a day. Even so, that was enough and I got a job despite having been unemployed for around 3.5 years. Now I'm looking again as it is easier to find a job when you already have one and I want something better.

5:57 PM
So... is this a mod-hat action?

@bwDraco Why are you waiting for next week?. Start Now

it's Friday

@bwDraco No, just friendly advice. You seem to spend hours looking at hardware and building your perfect PC. Spend that time finding a job and you will be able to afford a better PC as a result.
@jokerdino Job applications can be made any time of day. They might not get read until next week, but it will be at the front of the recruiters queue.

:)

@jokerdino It's 2pm in NY. That's at least 3 hours when you can call employments agencies and get fresh leads.

6:03 PM
YOU KNOW WHAT WOULD BE A GOOD IDEA?

@rahuldottech Yes. For you to stop shouting :)

IF WINDOWS ACTUALLY TOLD ME THAT IT HAD A MAJOR UPDATE PLANNED WHEN IT HIJACKED MY RESTART AND SHUTDOWN OPTIONS
@DavidPostill that too, probably
@DavidPostill how're you doing, btw?

@rahuldottech OK enough. Time for a change :)

@rahuldottech Easy, disconnect from the Internet, and your LAN. No more updates

@bwDraco Regarding learning stuff this might be an interesting read:

Q: How to teach a person to enjoy programming?

DP_I've been teaching programming to my 13-year old son for over a year now. I'm not satisfied with his progress. I think that one of the reasons is his attitude: He wants to learn programming (he said several times that he wants to do something related to programming, technology, and/or game develo...

It's about motivating someone else but it also applies to self motivation. If you don't enjoy learning something most peeps will go and do something more interesting first, like boning up on hardware ...

6:10 PM
> Meet him where he lives. Take something he's already interested in and use programming to accomplish some goal within that interest. The act of coding is not the end goal, the final "product" is the end goal. Make it about that.
that's what I've been telling bw for years
that's how I got into programming
I don't program for programming's sake; I do it because I want to get something done

@allquixotic +1 me too. I taught myself to program (in multiple languages) because I had a product I want to create. Early days an assembler, followed by an editor for a Z80 chip ... later I wanted to write a cross platform windowing library that ran on DOS and Windows. Then adding rudimentary classes to C using macros. Later I learnt C++ and Java just becuase.
@bwDraco Please go and apply for 10 jobs then come back to chat :)
:44694308 No. You are an adult? and expected to apply some self restraint.

6:30 PM
Emailed my job counselor. I already had plans in mind but will be changing them.
I'm not planning to take a shotgun approach to job applications; up to five applications a week for carefully-selected jobs is expected.

Well that is up to you. 5 a week means that you could still be looking next year. If the US is anything like the UK there will be several 100 people applying for every job. You need to play the numbers game and also make sure your CV stands out from the crowd as well as pestering the recruitment agencies.

They only remember the person who called them last. Ring them at least once a week. They are often the first people to get a job requirement often before it gets posted on a public recruitment site.

Hmm. Will bring that up.

This is the last time I will post my personal experience of job hunting and personal development for you. You have ignored everything (apparently) I've posted previously to try and help/advise you and this attempt looks like going the same way. Good luck!

Sorry :(

The time is now 14:40 in NY. That's 40 minutes later. How namy jobs can you apply for in 40 minutes?

6:42 PM
Will be ramping up over the next few weeks days; I will probably be taking a shotgun approach as suggested.

@bwDraco So start NOW. Don't wait until tomorrow. Take a break from chat and SEND SOME JOB APPLICATIONS!
Procrastination (from Latin's "procrastinare", that translates in to: the prefix pro-, 'forward', and the suffix -crastinus, 'till next day' from cras, 'tomorrow') is the avoidance of doing a task that needs to be accomplished. Sometimes, procrastination takes place until the "last minute" before a deadline. Procrastination can take hold on any aspect of life—putting off cleaning the stove, repairing a leaky roof, seeing a doctor or dentist, submitting a job report or academic assignment or breaching a stressful issue with a partner. Procrastination can lead to feelings of guilt, inadequacy...

...and suspension time.
Or at least a mod message.

@bwDraco You don't need a goddamn mod message. Just go and do it! Log out from chat!

hmm

Applied for an IT support job at a CUNY school.

7:31 PM
...and two more IT jobs in the CUNY system as well.

7:54 PM
@bwDraco What country are you from (if you're OK revealing it)?

United States.

Alrighty, I can't help with a job unfortunately. We are trying to expand, but you'd need to be willing to move to Canada

Yo America, it's currently week 20 of 2018, why have there been 22 school shootings already? :|

@bwDraco G'donya
Keep it up :)
(in a non-pressurising way)
Longstanding habits and ways of thinking are very tough to break, but taking small steps get you towards your goal :)

@CanadianLuke Can you provide more info about the job opening?
@allquixotic Who / what is "bw"? Oh I see.
@allquixotic I got into computers in general because "Hey this is interesting I wonder how this works what if I do this or that" AKA inquisitive thinking.
@CanadianLuke "Population: 7 billion" Haha
Wow, this chatroom is surely overwhelming with emotions

1 hour later…
10:11 PM
@ThatBrazilianGuy Our boss is looking to get more funding for at least one more tech. Need to be a jack-of-all-trades though. Training is on the job

@CanadianLuke Hm. What activities would be included? Tech support for end users? Managing servers? Deploying websites using poupular CMS's and tools? Developing in-house solutions? Managing networks?
Is there a way we can talk about this without disrupting the chat? Do you use Telegram?

@ThatBrazilianGuy I don't, but I use Signal (same idea). It's mostly helping end users, but involves setting up / maintaining Linux (Debian) servers, hacking Windows to work with legacy products, and dealing with people

10:38 PM
@CanadianLuke I have experience in those, except in "hacking windows", I'm not sure if I understand what it means.
I don't own neither a passport or a travel or work visa, I don't speak french, I'm married and don't want to live apart from my wife
@CanadianLuke Are you allowed to discuss the approximate salary range of the position?
