@bertieb done

2:16 AM
Thanks all.
So... I'm getting the feeling Astaroth has insufficient exhaust airflow, because I'm finding the lion's share of the heat under heavy CPU+GPU load is being pushed through the radiator. The rear exhaust fan does only 1000 rpm and only seems to be blowing a limited amount of hot air. Do I try adjusting the fan curves again, or resort to getting something like a Noctua NF-A14 industrialPPC-2000 PWM to fix the problem?
Bear in mind that we're talking about 200W to 300W of heat from the graphics card here.

is it overheating?

It's not, but I don't like seeing the CPU liquid cooler handling the majority of the heat.

it is kinda what its designed to do

It's not quite something like allq's (@HornOKPlease's) desktop, which in fact does experience overheating under full GPU load.

he does have 2 video cards, and a hardware wassname...
raid card

2:26 AM
My problem is that the system gets very loud when the room is hot, because turning down the fan curves results in far too much load being placed on the radiator fans.
I kinda feel the job of the radiator fans should primarily be to exhaust heat from the processor, not the graphics card.
(there's a 3000 rpm version but the Noctua 3000 rpm industrial fans are notorious for being very loud and are not appropriate for this application.)
...whatever. Order placed.
It'll be here in two days.
Yeah. The rear case fan isn't moving much air.

2 hours later…
4:25 AM
Also... for whatever reason, the stock Corsair exhaust fan runs very hot at higher speeds, with the fan's motor hub exceeding 60 °C at full speed. Setting the fan to run at 100% does help, but this is a temporary measure and I'll have new fan curves set up once that Noctua 2,000 rpm fan comes.

4:50 AM
This is amazing. Linux on an 8-bit AVR.

5:29 AM
@forest ... on an emulator
I remember that from years ago. Was on HAD

5:49 AM
Well of course it's on an emulator. Doesn't make it not cool!

on the contrary
makes it cooler and more insane

I want to see that done with an Intel 4004.
Running an emulated Ubuntu, itself running QEMU emulating Windows 7, running DeSmuME emulating Nintendo DS, running ZXDS emulating ZX Spectrum, running a ZX BASIC emulator of CHIP-8, itself emulating Intel 4004. :D
Just to see how many years it takes to start up.

6:04 AM
it says I have a normal heart rhythm :)

hah
@HornOKPlease does it detect if you're a cactus?

!!does it detect if you're a cactus?

@HornOKPlease Impossible

there's your answer

whats the word people?

6:32 AM
I dreamt about motherboards and expansion cards all night
TIL I'm a cyborg

@rahuldottech no you aren't
you would have dreamt of electric sheep if you were

So AI cars are having the same problem IPv6 is

Hey, does anyone here have experience with developing browser extensions?

12:05 PM
Hi there
Any ideas why my home pc which logged into google yesterday without 2auth confirmation needed, today suddenly asked me for 2auth?
All the days prior it was not needed but today I suddenly had to confirm it again
Did the session cookie expire? And how can I check if that was the case or see when the current one will expire?

Bob
it happened because google decided it needed to happen
(I'm not kidding, they're intentionally secretive about this kind of thing)
@FMLCat vodafone's been pretty screwy the last couple days here i.imgur.com/wFbS2Qr.jpg

12:22 PM
Do you want to play a game
Try and identify tthis cpu plz

That is insenly annoying. Because it showed me not windows 10 but windows nt 10.0 so I thought it is some old windows nt pc that got hacked and is trying to log in into my account. That's why I changed the password and later figured out that it was my pc and that windows 10 is called windows nt 10 in the verification app. But one can not have old passwords so now I have a stupid new password for no reason what's or ever. Just because google decided it......
Any idea who's fault it is that windows 10 is called windows nt 10.0? Is it windows providing these names or google themselves?

@Hakaishin I think that would be Microsoft.

fing stupid... to have an external and internal name. I mean ok give it an id, but give it a super similar but not same name :failfish:

!!tell 47955224 lang

@Burgi Command !!language does not exist. (note that /tell works on commands, it's not an echo.)
@Burgi Command !!lang does not exist. Did you mean: lang (note that /tell works on commands, it's not an echo.)
Sep 25 at 9:52, by Journeyman Geek
language!

12:32 PM
got there in the end :)
@djsmiley2k thats easy it has the name printed on it

@djsmiley2k ISPs don't think it's worth adopting AI cars because "NAT works well enough" ?

@Hakaishin actually I think it'd the actual version number

what?
wait is there a language filter on se?

@Hakaishin there's rules against profanity
However we prefer gentle reminders first
Language! Is a bit of a running joke in this room
(yes we actually got a room culture. $deity knows how that happened)

Oh hello
cc6xDXkq.c in /tmp
That's... not suspicious at all
I think this VPS may need nuked from orbit
Unless
It's part of the netdata compile process?

12:49 PM
s/gentle reminders/insta-kicks/

I guess that's is an issue with curl scriptname | bash type installs
They can be a bit opaque

heh
@bertieb Well, what's in the source code?

378 lines' worth
Some of which grabs other scripts

In the .c file?

Ohh

12:52 PM
Seems fishy to me

It's empty
There's an .ld and an .le file
the latter of which complains about not finding -lsensors
which is why I wondered about netdata

why would if want lmsensors tho

netdata is an all-in-one monitoring dealie

my guess would be so it can report on temps etc
Oh, of course
Panic over
I think

12:58 PM
You should never do curl | sh though anyway.
That's like, the worst thing you could do.

I used the package in my distro :p
@forest that's uncommon actually

Well first time I ever said the f word here it happened to me :p
Then someone like 5 minutes later said "shit" and... nothing
but whatever

2 hours later…
3:04 PM
@bertieb Heh, this is going to be for a company (my own actually), so not going there. Should be all legally clean.

3:49 PM
@djsmiley2k 65nm Brisbane. 2C @ 2.7 GHz, 65W TDP.
How long have you had this?

4:05 PM
@slhck macs are ew anyway

4:19 PM
@bwDraco god knows
just found it in a mb in a box of random equipment
I need to do a @Burgi and list it all
I wonder if it's better than my server tho
shame it's not 4C, then it deffo would be

> AMD Athlon(tm) 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 4600+ AuthenticAMD GNU/Linux

@JourneymanGeek doggo!

WOOF.
@bwDraco that's my server cpu, which is better? D:
Tho even if the cpu's worse, this motherboard might be better
An original crosshair?!
vs M2N68-AM Plus= (in my server, which is better?)
the oen in my server only supports 2Gb mem :/
Also I have memory....
and old half dismantled gfx cards
Like no clue if any of this is even usable
I think that's a BFG 6600 GT
The other one maybe a 6800 GT
@bertieb almost
IPv6 would work well everywhere, if there wasn't IPv4 around anymore
AI Cars work well, with AI cars
screw humans.

4:36 PM
The new chip would actually be better.

'new' as in the one on my desk?

@djsmiley2k The chip you found would be faster.
Yup.

#:O
What about the motherboard?
I wouldn't be supprised to find the monstrosity in there is terrible, but an original crosshair sounds really old....
> 4 x DIMM, Max. 8 GB, DDR 800/667/533 ECC,Non-ECC,Un-buffered Memory

Ow. There's been seven generations of the Crosshair boards so far, with an eigth on the horizon. Astaroth uses the Crosshair VI Extreme.

hmmm just found 2 sticks of DDR 3
wondering if they'll go in my desktop :D
> Crosshair IV Formula
is in my desktop
got 2x4Gb and 2x2Gb in there atm
interesting, coudl go from 6 to 8Gb at least.

4:46 PM
Hmm... That's a DDR3 board.

yaah
why's this ram in a box :/
maybe i was gonna install it and forgot :D
wait. it's 4Gb strips
So I'll have 4+4+4+4? Sweeeeeet

5:06 PM
eeeeee

2 hours later…
Fun with eSIMs!
@rahuldottech that's incredible
kexec() ?

@HornOKPlease no idea, I'm not a linux dude myself
but it's crazy that you can do that, yes

kexec is for loading a new kernel replacing the current kernel basically

@HornOKPlease Ah

@rahuldottech For my servers that don't have IPMI (KVM-over-IP) access, in the past, I've installed a custom OS (with a custom root filesystem, like ZFS, for example) by using the provider's PXE boot into a rescue environment

6:49 PM
I seriously need to be working on projects.

@HornOKPlease cool! I use linux too! I once set up an ftp server!

The usual process is:
1. Reboot into their rescue environment, which is usually Debian Stable, but it doesn't have ZFS precompiled
2. Compile ZFS (takes a bit)
3. Follow a github guide to install the system manually with a ZFS root
4. Reboot and pray
5. Repeat steps 1 and 2 then do some debugging if it fucks up
@rahuldottech I sense some sarcasm :P

@bwDraco mhm. I have one you can/should get in on

I've lost interested in working on my servers, and have simply been logging into it once or twice a week to update it.

@bwDraco do you know js and/or php?

6:51 PM
Only a tiny bit.

@bwDraco more of which?

Not enough to write much code without having to look up lots of stuff.
Can be either, if I had to do something.

@HornOKPlease yeah well, it's honestly the most complicated thing I've done on linux. No lie. :P
@bwDraco great, that'll do. Riot.

Also, I kinda want to work on learning Docker and eventually reimplementing my website and other services on that server in containers.

1 hour later…
7:56 PM
...welp. I just plugged in my ROCCAT Ryos MK FX on Stolas. Haven't used it in a while, but at least the RGB lighting scheme saved on Bifrons (the cheap Lenovo netbook running Linux) has been retained in hardware.
I hate putting a usable mechanical keyboard to waste.
(via a USB Type-C to Type-A adapter; just ordered two more because my current generic one is very flaky at USB 3.0 speeds)
...anyone fancy a 17" thin-and-light laptop with a 16:10 display? anandtech.com/show/13681/…

8:16 PM
on my first call into Verizon, I got a "Shibboleet" style guy
eSIM problem is on its way to being resolved :D

yay my cat just knocked a dr pepper onto a computer :(

@Keltari What computer, or just a keyboard?

just an old pc I was working on. it didnt get inside... just all over the case.
and the floor
its really my fault. I have a cat. I should have know better than putting the can on top. :(

oh god
it's full of cat pee

8:27 PM

gross
there its dr pepper free

also once i exploded a bottle of cherry coke
over about 20 pc's when i was running a lan gaming centre
i started exploding in my hand and I had to run thru the enntire shop

it would have been somewhat appropriate if was running Peppermint OS, but its running Mint
No wait... the Mint hard drive is out. Its running MX. Im a liar.

lol

I really like this thing i bought. Trayless drive bay. I can switch hard drives/OS
I can back up to stacks of 500GB hard drives ive accumulated
now I just need a method of easily storing and retrieving hard drives

8:43 PM

Q: How to check 'mdadm' RAIDs while running?

djsmiley2kI'm starting to get a collection of computers at home and to support them I have my "server" linux box running a RAID array. Its currently mdadm RAID-1, going to RAID-5 once I have more drives (and then RAID-6 I'm hoping for). However I've heard various stories about data getting corrupted on on...

Holy cow
I got 25 favoriates

@Keltari lol
@djsmiley2k :o I was 10 when you asked that

10:20 PM
Well this is weird. I put that ram in. It's identical to some I already have..... Won't boot
Flashing dram light on crosshair IV formula
Ideas? :/
K, boots with one stick
And.....we might be booting
Hey flashing cursor
Woohoo it was trying to boot r wrong drive, maybe
Or a cable is loose :)
Gerrrrrrp why is grub busted

11:10 PM
Grrrrr can't be bothered with this tonight >_<
