12:00 PM
just put them all in a folder?
zip em

12:25 PM
@djsmiley2k or .tar.gz if you're *nix

of course

s/nix/l33t/

> On Windows,
lol

He only said the classic way on Windows was behind the times not that he only wanted Windows solutions

user226528
Never mind. I just created one. It starts a local web server, launches the default web browser at the index page and puts everything into a 7z file.

user226528
12:32 PM
There are a number of nasty problems though, but I think I got the hang of it.

you're shippin some html..... with a webserver?

@JourneymanGeek I didn't know Steam had an app option at all... my Steam 2fa uses my Gmail

you don't need a web server for plain html

@JourneymanGeek my thoughts exactly
but alas, discribing the whole question is not @FleetCommand's forte.

user226528
12:37 PM
Amazing that you guys think it is plain HTML.

@FleetCommand probably cause what you're saying makes no sense? ;p
you stalked about plain HTML...
then launched into a conviluted thing heath robinson would be proud of

> Does anyone know a way to package a number of HTML files and their resources into a self-contained file? Preferably SFX?
yup, you definately said 'html'
even javascript will work

user226528
I am now looking into ways of making the Flash contents running inside the web server think it is from a specific domain.

as well embedded videos

user226528
I've done that before using IIS.

12:39 PM
(for those of you outside the british commonwealth en.wikipedia.org/wiki/W._Heath_Robinson - that's british for "Rube Goldburg machine)

user226528
Back then, I wanted to play Sonny but the one I ripped from ArmorGames didn't work on the local machine.

@DavidPostill I'm halfway assuming its not static content

@DavidPostill sourceforge tho

user226528
@DavidPostill Node.js does not even need that. A web server comes baked right in it.

12:41 PM
In case you hadn't figured it out already

Any news on if a tsunami hit alaska yet?

@FMLCat oh, I'm getting my phone fixed over the weekend

user226528
The Tsunami news has probably stopped the normal life dead in its tracks.

found somewhere to do it, and they do one pluses and I got my replacement screen

looks non-wet atm

12:42 PM
I don't have Steam Guard mobile authenticator but when I use the reset page it allows me to reset the authenticator by SMS or by email
So it seems easy enough

@FMLCat I think this would be easier if it was actually dead ;p

@FleetCommand concidering it came at 0030, I'd suspect yes.

I don't actually want to deactivate/reactivate it

Probably
I guess you don't actually need it to authenticate/log in to anything at the moment then
But it's good to know the system seems set up to allow easy resetting if a mobile authenticator was lost... similar to my gmail tbh

yup
tbh, gmail would hurt more cause I got so much stuff tied into it

user226528
12:44 PM
@djsmiley2k Be that as it may, as long as the new is valid when the people wake in the morning, and still broadcast via the morning news programs... Everyone's normal life would stop being normal.

Gmail just has a button when you log in "Problems with code?" - Yes! My phone's been factory reset four times since I last installed Google authenticator
Just click the button on the login page and it lets you send a code via SMS instead, which is so easy I've not even bothered setting up Authenticator again for months... I probably should
I really should figure out some form of 2fa for my RDP but eurgh. Laazzyyy. And lack of non-proprietary Microsoft support

lol
funny thing is I have TFA on my steam account for one reason...
selling off steam cards ;p
(mostly during sales so I can collect a full set or two )

I have Steam Guard setup because it's mandatory now

ya
also I'm more less doing everything off my jelly
if not for typing Its not that bad a secondary phone ;p

Although it's not terribly effective 2fa when my email uses the same password as severything else

12:47 PM
ya, that's a thing

@FleetCommand If the people affected haven't woken due to the sirens, they maybe getting a very rude wake up shortly.

user226528
lol

Mind you the whole 2fa means if you have my Steam password and my Gmail password you still wouldn't get in as it'd require a code on my phone
The only reason my phone password isn't the same is because a PIN is easier to enter on a phone

user226528
@JourneymanGeek Well, W. Heath Robinson probably never had to choose between WebBrowserControl and Node.js.

If it had a password, it'd probably be the same password. Which is bad.

12:50 PM
y u use same password!

@djsmiley2k What's wrong with sourceforge?

@DavidPostill ._.
they went full evil for a bit
2

SourceForge is a Web-based service that offers software developers a centralized online location to control and manage free and open-source software projects. It provides a source code repository, bug tracking, mirroring of downloads for load balancing, a wiki for documentation, developer and user mailing lists, user-support forums, user-written reviews and ratings, a news bulletin, micro-blog for publishing project updates, and other features. SourceForge was one of the first to offer this service free of charge to open source projects. Since 2012 the website runs on Apache Allura software...

@djsmiley2k Because I've been too lazy to think of a new one and remember it for about fifteen years

never go full on evil.

12:51 PM
@djsmiley2k Like Google

well that link didn't work
@FMLCat Google aren't screwin with mah downloads.

@djsmiley2k Link worked, onebox didn't

they can have my datas, i give it freely

@djsmiley2k Google doesn't do full on evil

12:53 PM
yeah and Nazi's stopped invading in 1949.

It's only the mafia who hold grudges for that long ...

Doesn't mean i forget.

@DavidPostill I tend to hold grudges like that till they die of old age. Then have them stuffed.

Your loss.

Ooh, grudges! I still haven't forgiven Sony for the whole rootkit thing

12:55 PM
^_^

I haven't forgiven Enron.

I have one of their cameras ;p
however it actually has a standard SD card and takes good photos

user226528
@DavidPostill I am pretty sure Yakuza hold grudges for longer.

Also, God holds a grudge longer

12:55 PM
@JourneymanGeek Sony using a widely-adopted standard? Since when!?~ :P

@bertieb IKR?
It allegedly also does Memory stuck pro duo but I don't actually know where the slot is
and micro USB
semi non standard, but easy to obtain batteries

Batteries I can forgive; everyone seems to roll their own

but I chucked a 128gb card in mine

I have three Canon DSLR cameras, with batteries common to two of them

and I pretty much am just limited by battery life
if it would just charge and run at the same time, I'd just chuck a power bank on it ;p

12:58 PM
Ah, nice
My uncle had one of Sony's mirrorless camera dealies and it's a decent camera

Mine's a A5100

> Hindu Dharma implores us to let go of grudges, resentment and especially self-contempt

A friend of mine had one of their crop sensor things, I think

user226528
All religions do.

@DavidPostill I'm entirely aware I'm not a saint ;p

Thinking of companies as persona's is crazy.

(of course, my mom's favourite saint has... a holy poker)

lol
@djsmiley2k Companies are made up of people ...

@DavidPostill at times I'm doubtful ;p

I don't hate the poor sods who have to work.

1:02 PM
There's probably a distinction to be made between the emotional response, and the rational "take one's business elsewhere" response to a company's poor behaviour
I don't spend my days and nights cursing Sony and their firstborn, but I'd rather not reward misbehaviour by purchasing their products where possible

@bertieb Yeah, one is "cutting off your nose to spite your face" and the other one is ... hmm

@DavidPostill @bertieb I reserve the right to mock soundly
And I'd never do business with say, godaddy, but that's actually cause I'm very happy with my current domain name and hosting providers

@JourneymanGeek Haha, That's exactly what I'm doing to you ;)

oh lord, go daddy
and network solutions -_-;;;

Ah, the elephant-shooting domain registration and hosting company you say
3

1:05 PM
(I do namecheap and online.net)

NC got my business too after, er, 1and1
I might have had stuff with godaddy too, now that I think of it
Oh yeah!

NC also runs my dad's email account + domain

As an aside, every ISP, Bank and Energy Provider in the UK has extremely poor customer service and rips off their customers. I would love to boycott all of them but ...

There was a mass move away from GD back in the day (2011), and so GoDaddy did the adult, sensible thing and blocked other registrars whois queries

No internet, no money and no energy is not very appealing ...

1:08 PM
@DavidPostill heh... funny thing is... ISPs in UK were so bad at one point that the VFX industry started their own

@DavidPostill I have no problems with virgin media
but hey ho.

@DavidPostill I've had very good (albeit limited) customer service with Zen :)
Heard good things about AAISP too, but they ain't cheap
(I hunted about for IPv6 providers back in the day)
Virgin emailed me to say that they had cabled up my flat (the one building on the whole busy road that wasn't cabled, going by the results of their online checker dealie) after I asked, so they got that going for them
OTOH, this was two weeks after I moved out...
I had the worst luck when it came to fibre broadband, I think I have possibly groused about it in here before

When I get my own place I will see what happens ... ;)

(Lived in a series of flats that were stuck on ADSL, including one on a street that was in the early rounds of Openreach's FTTC rollout)
@DavidPostill 🤞
(no idea if that will display for anyone else - u1f91e, fingers crossed)

it works here :D

1:14 PM
@DavidPostill Are you hunting at the mo'?
Ah, cool- unprintable box here!

@bertieb Will be after I've worked for 6 months and passed probation ...

Ah! Hope that goes smoothly and passes without incident :)

user226528
@DavidPostill O.o

1:25 PM
@Burgi That seems like an accurate reflection of your $company ;)

i thought so too :)

i'm now untangling a huge box of network cables because we have none usable D:
I need a minion
2

these cables are so long I'd turn into hulk while winding around my hand lol

I've a 30m CAT6 cable I'd be happy to sell you, collection only :P

1:35 PM
I need a few hundred

Well, gotta start somewhere... :P

@djsmiley2k actually I used a similar method with forearms for longer cables, then wrapping it around itself

(I bought three which it turned out I didn't need, have sold one, using another for something or other, trying to get rid of the third still)

user226528
Funny, but it seems the U.S.-side Wikipedia servers are not responding.

user226528
Well, at least from California, it seems Wikipedia is unreachable.

1:41 PM
@FleetCommand washed away

user226528
@djsmiley2k Well, you've officially frightened me. I am unable to establish any contact with our assets in Fremont, California.

user226528
Scratch that.

user226528
I am able to VPN into the unloading dock's computer there.

@FleetCommand doesn't mean they are alive

1:47 PM
isn't cali like 8 hours from the eqarthquake?

user226528
Well, that computer's web browser cannot contact Wikipedia either.

I was just reading the shed one
Have holidayed near Newton Abott in the past
It's a nice area
(cool story bro)

> It said that tsunami waves of less than one foot were expected in the town of Homer.
one foot doesn't seem so bad

user226528
1:55 PM
I contacted our people there and those cheeky bastards say there are in need of urgent help because (I quote) Zombies are breaking in from all directions.

> "Chimes going off in Sitka, Alaska, as booming emergency voice sounds the all clear: 'Repeat. The tsunami warning has been canceled. It is safe to return to coastal areas.'

@FleetCommand "Unable to replicate fault, closing ticket"

@Burgi D'oh

user226528
@DavidPostill Yeah, a while ago, someone I know told me his car's nav system gave him a similar alert.

2:18 PM
Am I right in thinking there's no way to get the status code of a page from within a userscript running in the context of that page?
This SO answer seems to say so, but that's in-page JS as opposed to a userscript
Other searches deal with status codes returned for AJAX requests, but that's not really what I'm looking for
This is not terribly critical as I can do what I want to do in other ways, but I'm curious

user226528
I am disgusted. I am disgusted. I am disgusted. Why don't people ever learn that whatever they see in the movies must stay in there?

user226528
@bertieb The accepted answer is correct. Without access to a web browser's frame/chrome, it is impossible.

Okay cool, cheers!

@bertieb Userscript running in context of the page acts exactly the same as in-page JS

2:34 PM
Ah fair enough, I wondered if it perhaps had access to slightly more as it was initiated via extension; but I guess security reasons are why it works like that?
Regardless, cheers for the info- TIL!

Not really - for all intents and purposes the extension just appends it to the bottom of the page

Bob
welp
so the train strike monday is probably going ahead

well that's beautiful, well played blizzard, well played.

@Bob nice. I force-killed Agent.exe

Bob
@allquixotic I feel like as a mitigation browsers should probably prevent XHRs to localhost (interface/subnet) from any non-local origin regardless of domain name.
Or at least make it a permission prompt.
Not for this specific case, even, but just as a general good idea.

@Bob that sounds like a good idea, but would probably break a lot of legitimate stuff
being able to XHR to localhost is super useful for, like, web apps for drivers (hello, Adaptec)
I guess it depends on the design but I'm sure there's other stuff out there that does it

fucking brilliant.... my FE has not built any of the product or case study pages
and because of his idiocy there is no CMS to populate these pages
so i'm going to have to make 100 fracking static pages

3:58 PM
@Burgi Can you template around that? Compile something using m4 or such?

@Burgi FE?

@DavidPostill Fracking Eejit Front End
@bertieb the point is he said he was done

My brain is only supplying 'Fallen Empire' for FE, which is a sign I've been playing too much Stellaris recently...
Ah yeah, people not doing their jobs is great fun :-\

he also told the project manager that we didn't need a CMS and it would be quicker to build everything statically

(side note: when did Android start translating :-/ to a happy smiley? I keep forgetting to use a backslash)

Bob
4:12 PM
@bertieb uhhh... never?
:-/ not seeing it in Firefox Android

Maybe it's the :-| one?

Bob
@allquixotic That's what the permission prompt would be for.
@allquixotic But even then you shouldn't need to do that from a remote origin..?
It could just as well be a locally hosted webapp and therefore a local origin making the local request.

@Burgi drop him in it

@Bob you'd be surprised; Adaptec's web server is localhost, but some are starting to do remote server / local hardware, like Netgear Arlo.

@djsmiley2k i have

4:17 PM
to manage my local Netgear Arlo equipment, I login to arlo.netgear.com

Bob
@allquixotic Yea, no. !!no. Nawp.
That's horrid.

> Ok this is going to sounds crazy but the dishwasher smells like jack daniels
my wife ^^

Bob
Basically means in 5 years when Netgear abandons it your local equipment stops working.
Also a glaring security hole.
If anything, browser vendors making this kind of behaviour harder would be a good thing.
If your local management interface decides it needs a remote connection, ok. We've burned that bridge already.
If it really needs an external connection in, host a proper secured service and be explicit about it.
None of this BS through the browser and local XHRs.

@djsmiley2k did your wife spill jack daniels into the washing machine?

Bob
@bwDraco Still waiting for the price drop :P

4:22 PM
@Burgi she claims not to have

Bob
@allquixotic Sadly, I'm more disappointed than actually surprised.

4:34 PM
@djsmiley2k is she upright?

@Bob interesting concept, but I'm not sure that's how that's gonna go... it's a really popular product and is on its second generation, and has had multiple product launches: pro, non-pro, Arlo Q, Arlo 2, Arlo 2 Pro, etc.
would be nice to get a commitment out of them, though, I suppose
or at least have them release a firmware update and a localhost server to manage and view the cameras when they shut down

but then you won't buy the new version!

Bob
4:56 PM
@allquixotic these things just don't have a good track record

@Bob I seriously need to learn JS.
(and HTML5, and CSS, and jQuery, ...)

don't learn CSS, learn SASS or LESS

Bob
5:18 PM
@Burgi SASS and LESS without CSS knowledge is... bad

why do you think that?

Bob
it's like people familiar with jquery but no idea what to do when faced with raw js (or any other framework, mind)

@Burgi Don't you still need an understanding of CSS? SAAS and LESS are just preprocessor's no?

true

Bob
@DavidPostill you'd also have a hell of a time debugging anything

5:20 PM
It's like trying to write c code using only the preprocessor and not understanding c :)
@Bob Very true

Bob
more or less
SASS is basically a pile of macros

ha. I saw what you did there. Nice pun.

Bob
(totally intended. *cough*)

you make fair points, i have no counter-argument

SATA SSD with 64-layer 3D MLC NAND. Perhaps this will be the last drive of its kind?
The 860 PRO is a halo product targeting a small niche and will only be made in limited quantities. The 860 EVO will take the place of the 850 EVO, which has been the gold standard for SATA SSDs for the last three years.

7:14 PM
still expensive as all hell. where's the $300 for 4 TB plz

Yeah. $1400 for the 4 TB 860 EVO.
But it's nice to see that Samsung is still making mSATA SSDs, which some systems still need.
And that they're still committed to making MLC NAND, even as the market completes its transition to TLC and is starting to move to QLC.

hmmm
PSN is partially broken, and it seems to be effecting rocket leagues match making too :(
3 matches so far failed to get going :(

Mar 11 '17 at 17:53, by bwDraco
@Mokubai Many legacy corporate Web applications are designed with the assumption that IE is the only browser used to access them (to reduce development and support costs).
Oct 4 '16 at 22:19, by bwDraco
Because it's proven to work with the specific applications in question. Any change risks something failing, even if the new browser is more secure/faster/more stable/etc.
Oct 4 '16 at 22:20, by bwDraco
Moving to a new browser could, in some cases, require a total rewrite of entire web applications, with all the costs that doing so entails.
Updating legacy web applications... is an extremely hard problem.
Not only do you need to spend time and money replacing a solution which already works, you need to spend time and money to retrain employees to use the new solution. Furthermore, because the new solution may not have been as thoroughly tested, it's more likely to fail than the existing solution. It also dramatically increases the burden on IT support, which is often already a massive money sink in larger businesses. Updating legacy enterprise web applications is not a trivial task.

9:40 PM
@bwDraco It's an easy task if it's a "Hello World!" app :-P

11:04 PM
hi
@bwDraco Those are all excuses commonly used to put off upgrades ... which just makes upgrading harder. In the meantime, your poor helpdesk needs to deal with maintaining the legacy system, which is often worse (and more costly) than the upgrade.
'course, that differs case-by-case, but if you're running legacy systems with no proper maintenance or support it's time to look at switching before everything falls apart around you.

11:15 PM
It's a dilemma. You realize a massive systems upgrade is needed but it's absurdly expensive and time-consuming to do and the existing system works just fine right now.

Bob
@bwDraco It seems to work just fine when your vision extends as far as the monthly bill.

11:31 PM
There's no real dilemma ;p
It's seen as a cost by folks who don't get it

I mean, you could have a separate team work on a next-generation platform while the existing team maintains the existing solution.
It need not be one big rollout.

oh damnit. My room's giving me dust allergy
I think someone tried to sweep it
