makes sense seeing that it is the #1 online game at the momet
GTA 5 has a bigger problem with cheating

IMO PUBG is one of a handful of landmark games, and is right up there with the likes of Dark Souls, GoldenEye 007, Grand Theft Auto III, and classic DOOM.

hmm...

@Bob What game?

maybe, too early to tell
@FMLCat PUBG

@Burgi WTF is PUBG?
Also no wonder my framerate was so low... I'd been running on battery for the past hour

12:04 AM
Player Unknown's Battle Grounds

!!/wiki PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds

PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds (PUBG) is a multiplayer online battle royale game developed and published by PUBG Corporation, a subsidiary of Korean publisher Bluehole. The game is based on previous mods that were developed by Brendan "PlayerUnknown" Greene for other games using the 2000 film Battle Royale for inspiration, and expanded into a standalone game under Greene's creative direction. In the game, up to one hundred players parachute onto an island and scavenge for weapons and equipment to kill others while avoiding getting killed themselves. The available safe area of the game's map decreases...

@Burgi Oh

Bob
@bwDraco ^ *completely ignores CS, WoW, DotA, LoL*
yea that list ain't biased at all

i get the feeling it isn't your sort of game

12:05 AM
lol

yeah i would rate CS:S over PUBG

Bob
@Burgi 1.6, man :P

I'm talking more about historical significance.

@Bob 1.0 ftw

Bob
though if anything CS:GO is the FPS with the most esports/prize interest

12:06 AM
@Bob i thought i might tailor to the audience, i was clearly mistaken :)

LoL is the world's #1 eSport FWIW.

you sure it isn't DOTA2?

Bob
@bwDraco which is why I qualified it with FPS

Yup.

Bob
if you want a real "historical" classic, the Mario series
Halo, too, as far as console shooters
Pokemon?
If we're going by how well-known and widely-played they are, anyway
hm, I appear to have lost my DNS

12:10 AM
@Bob Check down the sofa cushions
That's where I find my DNS

Bob

Hi guys. Do you guys use any add-ons to group your tabs in Chrome? I see a few that are available but was wondering if you guys have any recommendations. Thanks.

1:16 AM
WTF. I'm trying to map my home folder on my netbook as a network drive on the desktop and the permissions are not being inherited by the subfolders!
In other words, I can access data in Z:\ but not Z:\Desktop!
Ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh
The file I'm trying to transfer has wrong permissions.

This Qualcomm Atheros QCA9377 NIC on Bifrons is so freakin' unreliable. Either Bluetooth or Wi-Fi intermittently stop working every few days or so. I am just so tempted to replace it with an Intel 8260.
Dec 31 '17 at 0:57, by bwDraco
QCA Bluetooth is absolute crap.

Bob
1:35 AM
@bwDraco LOL
@bwDraco speaking of, I've replaced mine with an 8265 (cheaper & better)
no crashes since

I don't know if Lenovo laptops like this, though.

Bob
@bwDraco yea you'd need to check if they use a whitelist
what I did with my HP laptop (ralink) was look up the manual which listed 5-6 different adapters as supported configs, then bought an HP-specific intel card
my asus board on the desktop has no whitelist, thankfully

A more technical question...
My power supply makes an audible click whenever the system switches on or off. It's the first time I've heard something like this from a PSU, and it sounds like a relay.
Why would there be a relay inside a PSU?

Bob
@bwDraco saves power

(granted, this Seasonic supply has always made this clicking sound; I have not heard it from any other desktop I've used)

Bob
1:44 AM
> The way this relay is utilized is pretty clever. A thermistor is used in series with the AC input. This thermistor is used to measure and protect against inrush current. Once the PSU is already up and running, the relay is energized and the path to the thermistor is cut off. This increases efficiency by not including the thermistor in the primary circuit.
that's one possibility
fwiw, my AX860i makes similar noises

Ah! That's one trick they pull to get that Titanium rating.
> All of this is pure garbage.

Is Intel really planning on making this shit architectural? Has anybody talked to them and told them they are f*cking insane?

Please, any Intel engineers here - talk to your managers.
> making this shit architectural
!!/ultraheaddesk

By Ysmir, why does Intel insist that this Meltdown/Spectre behavior is a designed-in part of the architecture?

Bob
2:04 AM
@PaŭloEbermann: Yes, they should. An implementation which does not respect these rules is morally wrong, and should be sent to its room until it learns to play nicely with others. — Eric Lippert 5 hours ago
@bwDraco That thread refers to Spectre only. Meltdown is explicitly called out (by Linus) as "to be fixed properly".
And Spectre is a much (much) harder problem.

Yeah.
Addressing Spectre is going to require completely rethinking how branch prediction works.

Bob
@bwDraco You should probably read this: lkml.iu.edu/hypermail/linux/kernel/1801.2/05282.html

This is going to take at least two or three processor generations to fully address.

Bob
> But since the peanut gallery is
paying lots of attention it's probably worth explaining it a little
more for their benefit.
Because it's all too common for people to dive into the dev mailing lists and come out misunderstanding what they're actually talking about.

Hmm...
This is a very complicated issue.
We'd probably have to wait for the 7nm generation, perhaps 5nm (well past 2020), before we see any substantial hardware-level fixes for this problem.
AMD will have an easier job here because they are less severely affected by Spectre variant 2 in the first place and are not affected by Meltdown at all.

Bob
2:13 AM
@bwDraco Meltdown is a much easier fix anyway - I'd not be surprised if it's not an issue in the coming gen.
Meltdown seems to have been a rather large oversight on Intel's part. (read: no one considered privileges properly in their predictor)
Spectre is a more general bug that's ... difficult.

@bwDraco because it was - there's a fine line between useful feature and exploit

Bob
@bwDraco ehhhhh... not really, no. partially because "7nm" and "5nm" is yet more fluff :P

Not available right now. I have an emergency to deal with.

2:32 AM
Alright. It's been addressed.
The 10nm generation (GlobalFoundries calls it 7nm) is due to begin later this year or early 2019, but true 7nm devices are probably not going to arrive until 2020 when EUV is deployed in production.
Official memory support has been extended to DDR4-2933, and higher overclocks should be possible.
This is important because the processor graphics are going to need huge amounts of memory bandwidth.
Nominal TDP is 65W, with cTDP down to 45W.
(desktop Ryzen Processors with Radeon Vega Graphics, codenamed Raven Ridge)
Hmm... 704 SPs at 1250 MHz. That's 1.76 TFLOPS.
At these clock frequencies, there should be plenty of headroom for overclocking the processor graphics, but the VRM is likely to be a limiting factor. Enthusiast-grade motherboards dedicate as many as four phases for the SoC portion of the chip, which includes the processor graphics, but many cheaper boards will have fewer phases which could prove to be a problem. Vega is quite efficient at lower clocks but draws insane amounts of power at high frequencies, much like Skylake-SP.

3:02 AM
@Bob YOU'RE fluff.
@Bob AX? :-o
When did you get that?

Bob
@FMLCat FLOOF
@FMLCat get what?

@Bob AX860i
@Bob Yes, of course, I meant floof.

Bob
@FMLCat Jan 2017, along with the i7-7700k, Z270 board, case, RAM, ... :P

@Bob Damn, shows how long I've been homeless...

Bob
@FMLCat :(

3:05 AM
I have a HX860i I think

Bob
@FMLCat Probably HX850i, if it's got Link
I was waffling between HX and AX

@Bob It does, never got it to work though

Bob
IIRC HX had the better fan bearing, while AX was fancier

Along with close to £10,000 of other computer equipment in a storage unit, doing nothing, just sitting there, depreciating

Bob
@FMLCat Works alright for me, though tbh it's been like half a year since I last looked at it
:(

3:07 AM
@Bob At the time the AX(i) was older and considerably more expensive and overkill for me

Bob
@bwDraco at this point all the nm branding is lies :P

850 was also overkill for me but I was considering the possibility of future dual-socket server boards (I tend to cascade old desktop PSUs into servers when I upgrade them)

Bob
@FMLCat I went overkill specifically for silent fans

And 850 was the lowest that supported dual-CPU mainboards (2x 8-pin CPU headers)
@Bob I wasn't too fussed about silent fans, as even my 10 year old 550w was pretty quiet while the machine was at full load (about 300-400w). It was probably the noisiest component in the system because everything else was even quieter, but still not what I'd call noisy.

Bob
@FMLCat I meant at <30% load the fan is completely off :P

3:09 AM
Yeah, my 850 does that too, pretty much fan off all the time even at full load

@Bob Went with Seasonic Prime Titanium simply because it was the best supply out there in terms of performance and efficiency. 850W is slightly overkill even for my build but with the 1080 Ti potentially using lots of power, I wanted the headroom. 1000W was an option but the added cost could not be justified.

But since there's other fans in the system and a liquid cooling pump it was never going to be silent anyway. Just very quiet, which it already was.

(about 500W peak load with full overclocks, both CPU and GPU; idle power about 60-70W)

In comparison my old laptop's fan, at minimum, was noisier than my old PSU fan at maximum

@Bob For me, it takes a sustained 35-50% load (depending on ambient temperature) to trigger the fan.

Bob
3:12 AM
@bwDraco Slightly? Man, if you're talking about even peak power draw, a 1080Ti would be fine on a 500-600W PSU

The price delta between 750W and 850W was essentially nil.
Dropping to 650W would leave me with insufficient power connectors.

Bob
o.O
how many power connectors do you need?

(my board requires 8-pin EPS at minimum, plus optional extra 4-pin EPS and a Molex connector for extra PCIe slot power)
Graphics card requires two connectors (it's a 280W card with the ability to operate at up to 360W).

Bob
erm

Bob
3:15 AM
most PSUs even at 600W should provide at least two

On the 650W model, there would be enough connectors for EPS and PCIe but that leaves no room for expansion. (The Molex connector is plugged into a different section of the PSU output.)
Currently: 4 of 8 PCIe/EPS connectors and 2 of 6 peripheral connectors in use.
(from linked AnandTech article)
Saving $50 on a component as critical as the power supply when it needs to drive more than $3,000 of hardware is just not worth it.
At the same time, the next step up (1000W) was an extra $70 to $80 with no meaningful benefit. Having some headroom matters, but not when it means that the supply will never operate beyond 50% capacity.
In short: 650W provides too little headroom, while the cost difference between 750W and 850W is minimal.
Oddly, they still ship Berg (floppy drive power) connectors with modern PSUs despite the fact that there are virtually no modern devices which still use it.

Even now it’s more of a traditional agreement between Queen and parliament. They agree to not get her involved in politics, and she agrees to not assume control of everything that starts ‘Her Majesties’. @JourneymanGeek I just found the phrasing amusing :P

@Bob most of that article is amusing

Any of you know about amps? (Not Biotic Amps; I'm talking about stereo amps). My dad is looking for one to drive some pretty old but pretty powerful speakers. Apparently they use a "banana plug" -- ooold analog wiring tech? And he apparently wants "100 watts" on the amp, and "Bluetooth"
I know for the BT I'm going to get aptX and give him my Avantree Priva III so it'll sound good at least digitally and have a Class 1 transmitter. So. What can I buy that meets these criteria?

Bob
@allquixotic Biotic amps :D
@allquixotic I guess @JourneymanGeek might
@allquixotic ...photo of the plugs?

@Bob the middle black ones

user226528

o/

@allquixotic its basically bare wires with a thing that fits over
TYPICALLY connectors will do both
does it look like an oldschool toothpaste cap?

'How do I start a sentence with a date?' As i understand it, some people call this the definition of marriage. :-P — mcalex 17 hours ago

user226528
6:41 AM
What?

user226528
Do you mean how to start conversation with your dating partner?

user226528
Or do you mean how to construct a sentence whose first element a is date (as in time)?

user226528
The second is easy: "11 September was a fateful day."

Bob
You could click through to the question I'm quoting a comment of.
The comment being a joke.
(Alternatively: thatsthejoke.jpg)

no no the other end
ahh yeah
@Bob those do bare wires and banana clips

user226528
6:44 AM
Oh, I didn't know clicking "17 hours ago" takes me to the question.

user226528
So, thanks, I guess.

@allquixotic I've heard nice things about class D amps
and they're small, cheap and fairly simple

user226528
@Bob One thing I learned throughout my life is that unless you are very famous, people won't go the extra mile of decoding the meaning behind your vague sentence. Even worse, they use that vague sentence in a court to make you look bad.

@JourneymanGeek have any examples?

@allquixotic they're pretty generic ;p

Bob
6:48 AM
@FleetCommand ...what vague sentence?
I'm reasonably sure I haven't said anything vague in the last hour or so.
@allquixotic maybe pick something off massdrop... amps turn up fairly often there and presumably people like them :P
or something highly rated off amazon

ebay.com.sg/itm/… is by the same company that made my headphone amp, for example
@rahuldottech again? maaan.

Bob
@Aibobot lol. SMSL?

@Bob yup

Bob
@Aibobot "and nobody in RA was surprised"

still on that little thing, since I can't afford my dream setup yet ;p

Bob
6:51 AM
@allquixotic You should pick up the BeoLab 90 :D

;p

@Bob yeah, I'll just do that

user226528
@Aibobot It is called a crush, isn't it?

@FleetCommand puppy love
he'll move on to another in 3 weeks

user226528
lol

user226528
7:01 AM
Yeah. He will.

user226528
Although "puppy love" is a bit rude for a 17, isn't it?

user226528
Most men are practically adults by the time they reach 15. We usually give it 3 more years just to be sure.

@FleetCommand I mean, maturity-wise it's probably puppy love... behavior-wise, could involve "adult" behavior
meaning the relationship probably won't have staying power due to it being based entirely on physical idolatry

user226528
True. True.

user226528
Also, Burgi and DavidPostill's birthday on the same day?

7:29 AM
Hey @allquixotic, just continuing from yesterday, the laptop is a Lenovo Thinkpad W540, can't see a displayport on it but it does have a thunderbolt port

@Psycrow oh man, that's a pretty damn nice laptop, a generation newer than my T530 and the workstation class :)

@allquixotic yeah its nice, tend to have a couple VMs running for work so the extra kick is nice to keep it running smooth

that thing supports 3 DisplayPort displays at a maximum combined resolution of 4K, so you could in theory use two "2k" monitors or 3 1080ps

id probably just go for 1080ps, not looking to shell out for 2k monitors

Bob
@allquixotic 1080 is more or less "2k"
1440p is closer to "2.5k"

7:34 AM
@Psycrow can you look in Device Manager and tell me the model number of your graphics card(s)?
@Bob ah... would 2x1440p exceed 3840x2160 max framebuffer for the IGP?
I guess it would
actually nope
3840x2160 is 8.2M pixels; 2x1440p is only 7.3M pixels

Bob
@allquixotic yea, 2160p is a crazy high resolution (number of pixels)
even though it's not that much bigger in one dimension

I believe when they do framebuffer limits like that, they care about pixel count (because that's how you determine if it'll fit in VRAM) and not so much dimensions
even though 1440*2 > 2160

Bob
yup

@Bob is it a safe bet that the likely i7-4800MQ or similar in a ThinkPad W540, plus any Quadro that it's likely paired with (eh... the Quadro is where it gets iffy, as it wouldn't even be Maxwell probably) would do DP 1.2 MST?

Bob
rule of thumb is something like 1x 2160p60, 2x 1440p60 or 4x 1080p60
though often there's a hard limit at 3x
@allquixotic ehhhhhhhh. hard to say

7:40 AM
Psycrow has at home 3 x (I believe) 1080p monitors that do only DVI and VGA and he's looking at cost-effective ways to conveniently switch two of the monitors (or, better, all three) to his laptop while minimizing cabling, desk space consumption, and of course, price... yesterday I had half a mind of recommending him to get DP 1.2 MST compatible monitors and sell the DVIs

Bob
I didn't really keep up with Haswell

I know the 4800MQ supports MST because my HP laptop has it with the same IGP and same CPU
but the Quadro is likely Kepler

Bob
@allquixotic StarTech also sells a decent (if pricey) splitter

likely K1100M

7:41 AM
The display adapters are Intel HD Graphics 460c and NVIDIA Quadro K1100M

> I Confirm that the issue is fixed with the latest Windows update for Win 10 (X64)

@Psycrow lol. that's just what bob and I were saying. 460c seems like an odd model number though. is that the PCI ID?
you sure it's not 4600?

Yeah, its a 4600, the column cuts off halfway through the second 0, whoops!

Bob
7:44 AM
or get separate simple DP => DVI
or monitor upgrade if you prefer
the hub is probably the cheaper option though

@Bob what's his cheapest option when his existing monitors are only DVI and VGA?
without a dock, he has 1 x DP / ThunderBolt 2.0 connector and 1 x VGA on the W540.
hmm
@Psycrow if you want to go dockless (or even with the dock for your USB and power this should still work fine), buy this cable to be able to plug the DVI from one of your monitors into your laptop or dock
then just go straight in with the VGA (put the VGA into your dock if you're doing it that way)
total cost: cost of dock (60 GBP maybe?) plus about 10-15 GBP for the cable
can use existing monitors
since monitors have DVI and VGA, you can use the monitors' input select to swap from DVI to VGA and plug the opposite connector into your PC
also, if your work laptop is running Windows 10, I think you might need either v1703 or v1709 to use DP 1.2 MST, so maybe DVI is better if you're on an old build

that looks like a more costeffective solution, was planning on getting a dock anyway so my partner can use her laptop when working from home too (would rather not have to go through plugging everything in manually each time), so if im getting that anyway then I just need the cable...

Bob
@allquixotic I was researching all the MST stuff for some guy's question a few days ago, almost the same situation. Except that question is now deleted and my comments are gone :(
maybe @JourneymanGeek can find it? :P

@Psycrow if you're both using the same desk and a compatible laptop dock (like if you both have W540 laptops) then yeah

Bob
7:53 AM
@allquixotic $130 with startech hub and adapters

As its not overly pricey for a dock, but not displayport on it, will go back to looking

Bob
@Psycrow those aren't much good
they use DisplayLink, which streams video over USB
it works in a pinch but often has issues

I agree with @Bob; you should definitely buy a Lenovo dock for the W540 using the native dock connector

good to know

the worst thing about DisplayLink is the latency; it's pretty bad
it's like using your monitor over remote desktop

7:55 AM
unfortunately that causes issues with my partner being able to use her laptop, not sure the make or model but its definitely not a Lenovo

actually modern RDP is probably better latency-wise than DisplayLink on a LAN

ah well, ill work something out

Bob
@allquixotic we never had latency issues but some chips would disconnect/reconnect after a while
@Psycrow get the startech hub.

@Psycrow too bad, too sad... if her laptop also supports Mini-DP and VGA, you could still keep your existing monitors but get a "KM" USB hub with a switch

Bob
@allquixotic no. you only need MST monitors if you want to chain directly. the hub does the chaining internally

7:58 AM
@Bob okay, nice, I didn't know that
yeah, in that case I recommend that :P

Bob
and the DP to DVI adapters are cheap and keep it all digital too

you can get that for your USB, so then, with Bob's displayport solution, swapping out a laptop would involve:
(1) Power cable. Can't avoid that unless you have thunderbolt 3. (2) plug in Mini DisplayPort cable (no annoying turn screws). (3) plug in one USB cable
snap, snap, snap, work... takes 5 seconds
no dock needed
if you're worried about cable tidiness, buy wireties from a hardware store

and plug in ethernet, but yeah it shouldnt take too long
might have trouble finding a dollar store in the UK but I take your meaning ;)

that's why I edited it

gosh darnit

8:02 AM
also. for swapping to the PC without moving cables, there is no way you are going to avoid fiddling with the input settings on your monitors without buying new monitors
the advantage of native DisplayPort 1.2 MST (daisy chained) monitors is that you only have to swap the input on the one monitor that plugs directly into your laptop/PC

Right, I'm going to go and get some work done, thanks again for all your help @allquixotic @Bob

half the work
but meh, good luck!
I guess you could do a 2 output MST dock but not sure how much more expensive that'd be

Bob
8:18 AM
@allquixotic why would you need to fiddle with input settings?

Upgrading one of our largest customers firewall firmwares, this isn't at all terrifying.

8:39 AM
@djsmiley2k You have a tech on site with a spare firewall?

nah
i'm 'onsite' as it's based here
it's cisco firmware, realtively easily to roll back
but still D:

9:17 AM
morning

@Bob because he also has a desktop PC

Bob
ah
@allquixotic but could just plug the minidp hub input into the desktop

he'd rather not swap cables every time he wants to switch

Bob

@DavidPostill What's the right order?

user226528
@DavidPostill Also, someone mentioned you are now working for Kolbenschmidt. :) Is that true? How is the job?

@FleetCommand Spring, Summer, Autumn, Hell?

Your version is correct for place that gets very cold at Winter.

@FleetCommand Someone is telling porky pies.

user226528

Porky pies? I don't eat pork but that has to be something of acquired taste.

user226528
Anyway, I must be wrong... let's see, where did I hear it?

user226528
@DavidPostill Yeah, sorry. I remember now; I confused you with another contact of mine whose name starts with Dave. Anyway, good luck wherever you are working now.

Do we need to send them thoughts and prayers again?

@FleetCommand Porky Pies is Cockney rhyming slang for Lies ;)

how quickly does a tsunami travel? :/
i.e. how quickly will we see a wave?
errr 500mph :O

> We recommend that OEMs, cloud service providers, system manufacturers, software vendors and end users stop deployment of current versions, as they may introduce higher than expected reboots and other unpredictable system behaviour. For the full list of platforms, see the Intel.com Security Centre site.
Oh yay

lol again?

@allquixotic It's "bad" but not that bad. I'd say it adds maybe 50ms of latency, whereas RDP is in the hundreds of milliseconds
@djsmiley2k Well the Intel press release is dated yesterday, I didn't realise it happened before
DisplayLink is worst when you have constantly changing full-screen imagery (i.e. a movie) but otherwise it's only a few frames behind an average monitor

@FMLCat well, microsoft pulled amd's ones, and I thougth intel had already released and then pulled some too
maybe they hadn't

> Some people aren’t very appreciative of Intel’s efforts. For example Linux guru Linus Torvalds has slated the efforts of Intel thus far. “The patches are COMPLETE AND UTTER GARBAGE,” commented Torvalds in a public email chain between himself and David Woodhouse (an engineer at Amazon in the UK), regarding Intel’s solution for the Linux kernel.

lul
that I did know about
grrr this chair is hurting my back

Bob
@FMLCat you really need to read Woodhouse's followup email... everywhere I've seen is misinterpreting the Torvalds email
(to start with, this is about the Spectre patches, not Meltdown)

@Bob Yay for news outlets contorting stories again

> But wait, why did I say "mostly"? Well, not everyone has a retpoline
compiler yet... but OK, screw them; they need to update.

Does anyone know a way to package a number of HTML files and their resources into a self-contained file? Preferably SFX?

user226528
On Windows, CHM and MHTML are the classic way but they have stayed behind the time.
