Anyway, I sorted it. So until next time...

@JourneymanGeek Don't confuse with 802.11ad. 802.11ax is the next evolution in "normal" Wi-Fi. It increases throughput and adds features like OFDMA (used by LTE) to enable higher performance in networks with lots of users.
Large home networks with lots of IoT devices stand to gain considerably with 802.11ax.
Corporate networks, even more so.

Bob
@bwDraco most of 'IoT' doesn't have the processing power (nor use for) high-throughput tbh

@JourneymanGeek actually it's the next evolution to 802.11ac unlike ad, and af

Precisely.
Just checked my parents' phones - they don't support 802.11ac :(
They're on 5 GHz 802.11n.
My father's latest tablet doesn't even support 5 GHz and is on 2.4 GHz 802.11n.
However, since these devices don't use much bandwidth, it's unlikely that they would have a meaningful impact on network performance.
I have three MU-MIMO devices: my OnePlus 3T (1x1), Nexus 9 tablet (2x2), and the Bifrons netbook (1x1). At least I know they can all communicate at the same time without stepping on each others' toes because they can all share the same time slices on my 4x4 router.
Dec 28 '16 at 8:28, by bwDraco
It requires client support, although legacy devices will still communicate like they used to (technically known as time-division multiple access, or TDMA) without breaking MU-MIMO for capable clients. Essentially, MU-MIMO devices can still share time slices while legacy devices continue to get individial time slices.

is this question and this one on topic

Q: Java runtime bean for any property name

allquixotic I want to have a JavaBean instance where using reflection to get/set any bean property (via methods setX() and getX() always succeeds, even if the underlying object did not define that property at compile-time. The type of the properties should always be a String, and should be stored in an int...

Bob
@allquixotic ow.

(MU-MIMO lets multiple devices communicate at the same time, using as many spatial streams as are available on each device and on the router concurrently, rather than just cycling through each device and wasting unused streams - this is particularly significant with quad-stream and higher routers in a world where client devices that support more than 2x2 are rare)

@Bob it's because my web framework doesn't support indexed properties in the form bean, so I'd have to write private foo_1; private foo_2; ... private foo_129340929; etc. and generate getters/setters for each one if I wanted to support an unbounded number of occurrences
the only HTML names I can generate for the fields are of the form fieldname_index

1:56 AM
@Ramhound ah
that's more interesting then

Bob
@allquixotic yup, ow :P

2:15 AM
yo all!

Hi!

Hey @BenN
how goes it?

Just composed this answer:
0
A: How do MU-MIMO routers handle non-MU-MIMO devices?

bwDracoDevices without MU-MIMO (called single-user MIMO, or SU-MIMO) will continue to communicate with the router in a round-robin fashion, just as before. Any MU-MIMO devices can communicate simultaneously on fewer time slices. To illustrate this, let's take a home network with five 802.11ac client dev...

Pretty good

Got to close a GitHub issue today that had been ongoing for a couple weeks :)

well that's progress, right @BenN!
hey @bwDraco - I'm old now :P
I'm sitting avoiding dealing with a full cloud storage of 4ish years of cell photos, a full SSD, and Creator's wanting to install
All on a Yoga laptop with 4GB hardwired memory :/

Ow :\

yeah. and my fav browser is Firefox, but it is slow half the time
Hoping to clean up things with a fresh install of 1703
Tempted to re-build my desktop, but it's so hard to justify when I have no need to sit at a desk.

I hear recent (and/or upcoming) updates are making Firefox a lot faster
I'm a Chrome user myself and am satisfied with its speed

I use firefox without javascript and chrome with javascript. Firefox is sadly slow but want to support it.

2:34 AM
Got a slow, cheap Lenovo laptop with 2 GB (!) of RAM, 64 GB of eMMC, and an Atom-type Celeron CPU. I've had to make lots of tweaks to limit paging and offload writes to external media (so as to optimize onboard storage endurance).
Jul 20 at 1:39, by bwDraco
Low-cost planar TLC NAND + DRAMless controller + low capacity + high write amplification (because the drive is often close to full) + low RAM + software not designed to minimize writes = bad SSD endurance.
I still have my main laptop, which has far more powerful hardware, but I managed to damage the CPU heatsink so I'm looking to replace it with a proper desktop (named Astaroth after the demon) soon.
(that machine is more than 3.5 years old and is struggling with the latest games)

I'd like a thin and light laptop with a Ryzen based CPU with significant on-chip GPU competitive with a decent dGPU, please, and I'd like it yesterday and for $2K or less

@allquixotic Where's Raven Ridge when you need it :(

although sheer practicality may dictate a proper dGPU die with physical separation from the CPU die
I think it's probably easier for current cooling systems (air or liquid + heatsink) to dissipate heat from two lower heat dies than one extremely high heat die
makes for more surface area to blow air over
so you'd get more perf out of a separate dGPU die

Also, separate TDPs.

but the machine would also probably be larger

(so CPU and GPU don't compete for power)

3:08 AM
@bwDraco out office standard is a n3050 with 4gb of RAM and spinning rust.

@JourneymanGeek Desktop thin client?

Laptop :p

Heh.

It's terribad. Also not really my problem any more

N3350 here. More modern, but still very slow. RAM is also a major bottleneck.

Bob
3:12 AM
@allquixotic "competitive with a decent dGPU" of which generation?
Competitive with lower-end GTX 9xxM is probably possible
Competitive with GTX 10xx is ... harder
idk if newer mobile Radeons have come out yet, but the last few generations were ... not great

@allquixotic Laptops almost always use heat pipes anyway, no? Well. Good/powerful laptops.

@bwDraco @JourneymanGeek You guys really should look at Core-M :P

@Bob I did not want to spend more than $300.

IME for web browsing and light gaming (i.e. not GPU-intensive) a m3-6Y30 is about as responsive as any full-(mobile) laptop I've used
not really tried anything GPU-heavy yet
well, I did try an Unreal 4 unoptimised sample... got 4 FPS out of it :P
(ok, not quite 4, more like 5-15, but ...)
@bwDraco welllll... dell refurb?
idk if you have them in the US
but I've seen Core-M down to under 400 AUD

@Bob 2 GB.

@bwDraco ah. yea, I rarely use my Atom/2GB ones anymore :P
though tbh they were still decent

@William You should check the description of the Android tag.
You took that suggestion as a suggestion to use it? Might want to read it before doing that.

ooops sorry do you mean android.se

@Ramhound It's a question about chrome OS, not about Android

He had 101 awhile ago
but it's about running Android applications on Chrome-OS

I asked on meta.android.se and they said it probably better on superuser unless it was platform agnostic. ... android.meta.stackexchange.com/questions/2336/…

Bob
@Ramhound So?
That does not make it off-topic.
Just to make it clearer:
For those voting to close, this question is not about the Android operating system, nor an Android device, and is NOT off-topic on Super User. It is a question about Chrome OS. — Bob 31 secs ago

thanks night time for me bye

@Bob retracted my vote to migrate

Bob
@Ramhound Thanks.
The no-Android restriction has been relaxed a bit anyway (iirc, tablet questions are now allowed-ish) because the lines between them and "computers" are so much more blurred than they were 7 years ago.
But it's always been "if it interacts with a computer, it's fine"
so e.g. Android emulators, at least as far as they interact with computers, are fine
and per that meta Q above, chromeos are more or less counted as "computers", soooo.
@Ramhound @bwDraco Oh, didn't see that bounty.
Which also means they can't reply now. Hm.

@Burgi fortnightly vs monthly?
sgd vs gbp?
underpaid vs overpaid? :P
every time I see a mathoverflow thread I get a brainoverflow

if its monthly he is on less than me (i forgot about UK tax...)
its a reasonable wage for entry level tech support in the UK
the wages SE use in their calculator are utter nonsense
they think a web dev in the UK should be on £62k

SGP
I think a local grad ought to make 3.5k

10:53 AM
LOL
@Burgi how much for a Cisco Network Engineer with CCNA1+2?
because I can tell you right now it's not what I'm on.
Just like how with a degree I 'should be on 30k+' lol
I paid £9 off my student loan last year
I'll be paying it for the next 1700+ years

@JourneymanGeek 3.5k would be roughly equal for a graduate here too
@djsmiley2k £67.3k source

11:29 AM
@Bob the actual page down key.
Technically it is alt down in android

@Burgi rofl
@William ah hmmmmmmm

Had to delete and recreate the recovery partition on my main laptop.
Reason: System refused to use the existing recovery partition because it was too small, so the system created a new one!
Had to do this in DiskPart.
Start with reagentc /disable, then in DiskPart, select the system disk, then select the recovery partition. Then run delete partition override.
Then create a new recovery partition at the desired location:
create partition primary offset=<offset> size=<size in MiB> id=de94bba4-06d1-4d40-a16a-bfd50179d6ac
Offset is in KiB from the start of the disk.
Then select the new volume and type format.
Exit DiskPart, and run reagentc /enable to enable WinRE on the new recovery partition.
Of note is that the recovery partition should be about 1 GB in size.
(450 MB is the bare minimum, but making it larger allows for expansion)
Basically, I wound up with two recovery partitions. I had to delete both of them, then create a new one at the end of the drive.
