Bob
6:00 AM
(if anyone needs it later: mounts, including zfs mounts for lxd containers, within a snap namespace do not appear in the "default" namespace. They can be accessed through the LXD PID at /proc/<pid>/root/ or by opening a shell within the namespace with snap run --shell lxd)
@bwDraco new packaging thing... the idea is instead of packaging for every distro, you just need snapd and you can snap install <package>
which then lives within its own little namespaced world (like docker) with a containerised consistent distro (usually ubuntu)
I'm using it cause new lxd is distributed via snap
comparison vs docker => askubuntu.com/questions/808524/…
this is how 95% of my projects go
"I need LXD" "On debian."

Still got photos to work on.

Bob
"I'll build it!"

lol

Bob
*build fails*
"I'll build it from PPA!"
*everything's fine for 6 months*
*PPA is deprecated and soon deleted*
"...guess I'll migrate to the snap"
(I'd tried the snap first but it was pretty unstable back then)

I like how you use (escaped) asterisks.

Bob
6:04 AM
and now: "hmmmmm I can't seem to see the rootfs mounts even though everything's working so they must be mounted. I want to peek into it to look at the backup.yaml to answer someone else's forum question."
*google around*
*learns stuff about snap*
sooo... here I am
but yea, a lot of this is just trying to figure stuff out as they come up
(and I get sidetracked easily)
but hey, I now know 300% more about snap than I did yesterday morning
(granted, 3x almost-nothing is still almost-nothing)

Bob
ehhhh
FreeBSD
I'm using ZoL

Are the ZFS commands the same?

Bob
@bwDraco The basic ones, mostly.

I know OpenZFS and ZoL are incompatible in some key ways, but I kinda think that's mostly on-disk format differences.

Bob
6:15 AM
Also, that website is pretty bad
@bwDraco nope, on-disk is compatible (assuming compatible feature flags, which they mostly are)

What are the main differences?

Bob
@bwDraco ok that website is horrible

(yes, I have worked with FreeBSD in the past)

Bob
takes forever to load, no support for opening in tabs, and the worst part: the actual command text is missing

Loads fine here.

Bob
6:17 AM
looks like they tried to embed a gist ... which didn't work
> A call to document.write() from an asynchronously-loaded external script was ignored.

The Gists load properly here in Firefox 57.

Bob
x10
@bwDraco not on the weirdly expanding category page, they don't
@bwDraco installation, iirc a couple commands aren't supported...

@Bob what he's trying to do feels even stranger
per user keypairs?

Bob
@JourneymanGeek well, I mean... it kinda makes sense for client certificate auth
but... that's pretty finicky to set up and use, and generally only used where high security is really required
and... what this guy is doing ... calling it high security is like a bad joke
there's just so much wrong here
where to begin
the cargo culting of where to generate the key?
the lack of HTTPS?
running shell scripts in what looks like a very injectible way?
using PHP? :P

Bob
6:24 AM
likely not having any idea what they actually want?

probably

Bob
@bwDraco linux, start here: pthree.org/2012/04/17/install-zfs-on-debian-gnulinux (it's a bit dated, but I think the core concepts are still good. mostly install that's changed)
@bwDraco more generic info, start here: open-zfs.org/wiki/System_Administration
but it's also very broad and largely unneeded info
I haven't read most of that
@bwDraco practical (my favourite!), start here: github.com/zfsonlinux/zfs/wiki/Getting-Started
I like practical
better than spending a week reading theory and getting bored
(that said, I usually end up spending a week reading up on best practices anyway)
@JourneymanGeek you were heading home tomorrow, right?
phone repair time? :P

tonight

So much to learn, so little time...

assuming the replacement screen reaches us

6:29 AM
ZFS, JavaScript, PowerShell, oh my!

otherwise will be using the xiomi 1s until I get it fixed
kinda tempted to throw lineage on it

(and even more stuff on the horizon: JQuery, Angular, Python, container-based virtualization... the list goes on)
It's not hard to get overwhelmed.

so don't!
pick a project, learn around it

And I still have photos to work on, a job search, and growing family obligations.

which you will have anyway.

6:36 AM
I think I need to learn to stay focused first.

well, you can learn that by focusing on a thing, no?
and I'm not sure you have trouble staying focused...

@Bob complexity of snap? quantity of snaps?
I only have one snap on one box, and none on my server O.o

Bob
6:56 AM
@allquixotic complexity
all the namespacing and plugs and .... bleh
@JourneymanGeek :D
@allquixotic they're self-contained, but they... hard to debug

@Bob wait for SmartOS to support snaps on LX zones (via namespaces; containerized VFS mounts are already fully supported in zones) and use dtrace? :D
(only half kidding. seriously, dtrace is great)

Bob
@allquixotic lol, I just meant it's hard to dig into the filesystem
but now I know snap run --shell exists it's not so bad
I wonder if that was always there

I resurrected my Haswell NUC (i3-4010U); I wanna use it as a streaming box (Spotify -> PulseAudio -> icecast streaming source --(Internet)--> my dedi -> icecast2

Bob
@allquixotic stgraber is like some kind of wizard, too :P

user226528
Well, if there was a prize for the least meaningful starred messages board, today's board would win it: 4 starred messages that start with "How" and make no sense. And someone might have been pissed by Symantec.

Bob
7:10 AM
I'm learning so much just by reading his various github comments and forum posts :D

github.com/allquixotic/tribblify is going to be getting some love: updated to a much more recent Vala, and adding support for detecting the artist and track name from the WM_NAME property of the Spotify window (identified by WM_CLASS = "Spotify")
@Bob yeah he's really smart, he's the mastermind behind lxd

user226528
SYMANTEC!!! All hands to battle stations!!!

user226528
Nope, can't do it.

o/ BBL

Bob
o.O
@FleetCommand it's been annoying me (more than usual) for weeks now ... today was just when every annoying thing about it happened at once. You can click through to read the transcript immediately before if you want the gruesome details.
@allquixotic I think @bwDraco is actually older than me
idk

user226528
7:14 AM
@Bob Already on it. Looks like Symantec Endpoint Protection is going haywire by the Spectre patches. And you are not oblivious to their past mistakes either, which are exactly what made me dump that certain company years ago.

Bob
@FleetCommand That was only one (minor) part, actually. The overzealous firewall and false positive deletions are independent.

user226528
And I never liked the fact that they sell two different antivirus products.

user226528
Well, technically three.

@Bob he’s 25

Bob
@allquixotic now I'm curious if you know my age (which I've been keeping somewhat hidden from this room) :P
Skype or Google probably told you at some point

7:19 AM
Oh and if you’re looking for more learning and talks and stuff, I’d recommend Alon Zakai (kripken, the emscripten guy), Jurg Billeter, the Vala guy, and Bryan Cantrill, the SmartOS guy
@Bob for some reason I thought you were closer to my age, not a youngin
Unless over the past N years we’ve known each other, I’ve aged and everyone else has stayed the same age

A lot is expected to change over the next few days as I dedicate more resources to meaningful learning.

hah
@allquixotic everyone else is clearly getting younger

@JourneymanGeek no kidding. You’re older than me, right?

probably!

I’m 32

7:24 AM
The human was born in 83.... ;p

A horrifying concept to even read

Man. We’re old. And Bob is an accomplished researcher and coder probably in his 20s and bw is worried he can’t find a job when he’s really young and has a MS and will get some nice entry level job in no time... we’re like, idk

Well, I'm still young as far as dragons go :)

and I need to find a job, and live with my parents ;p
lol
I got stories when I get back

Bob
7:27 AM
@allquixotic "accomplished" implies I'm actually competent :P

nothing as dramatic as my dad's trip

user226528
@bwDraco Isn't "learning" by definition "meaningful"?

actually gitter works ;p

@Bob from all accounts you’re the most accomplished/competent software guy in the room :P

;p
@Bob does magic!

7:28 AM
Dunno if I have the energy to Gitter NOW but I’ll read up later

@allquixotic naw, it'll wait for tommorrow

For now I need to watch cat videos or something

Bob
I met a crazy good 12 year old a few years ago

I actually have no clue what's going on ;p

Bob
@allquixotic pretty sure you are :P
far more breadth and depth of experience, and, y'know, you actually finish projects

user226528
7:30 AM
This is odd. I am having a lot of SMB2 network traffic today. The amount is normal but it is usually SMB3.

There's a long road ahead of me, but it's just the beginning of something greater :)

\o/
(finance spammers are toast)

Ave

8 photos left.

user226528

user226528
7:43 AM
Is it just me or do you guys also see something odd in this screenshot?

user226528
Hint: It is on the top right tile.

Ave
@FleetCommand this or this?

user226528
@Ave What would be wrong about "social engineering"?

Ave
idk

8:00 AM
@Ave "6characters"

user226528
So, it was just me.

Ave
@JourneymanGeek and "has to be"
not "has to be over 6"
"has to be 6"
it's super dumb and super insecure

......
those monsters.

@JourneymanGeek that's only 5!

ftfy
****** maybe

8:03 AM
:P

✅🐎🔋🖇️🔪🐱
(✅🐎🔋🖇️ is 4 characters)

Ave
just throw in some zwjs

8:19 AM
I highly doubt a password system with a limitation of this sort would be able to accept Unicode characters.

@bwDraco its a joke.

Bleh. This is not helping.
I'm sorry. It's not the first time my lack of a sense of humor has caused disruption.
(because ruining the joke derails the discussion)

since when did unicode come coloured in?>!

@bwDraco there's no discussion, only technically correct and utterly useless passwords
@djsmiley2k that's platform specific

nod, just completely supprised to see it

Ave
oh dear

lol
had that happen in an old workplace
dosen't take much

the picture of the bath xD

@bwDraco those look like generic carnage
where's the pile of burning video cards? ;p

8:54 AM
that looks like it has gone well
morning btw

morning @Burgi

how do i find out if my gfx card can run 3 screens?#

9:10 AM
@Burgi what card?
how many outputs?

its a nvidia quadro k600
i'm daisy chainning DP screens
just wanted to try 3 UHD screens :(
i can't seem to set the 3rd screen to DP1.2 mode
kepler?
the astronomer?

Hmm... You may not have enough framebuffer.

@Burgi Nope. GK107 supports only two displays. Furthermore, you only have 1 GB of framebuffer, which will not be enough to handle three 4K displays. And with just one SMX (192 CUDA cores), performance will be poor.

daisy chaining may be an issue too
can you even do more than 2 4k? even 2 would be 4k30

9:22 AM
probably not

@bwDraco I'm assuming its not for gaming

I believe Pascal can drive up to four 4K panels, but I don't have four 4K panels to hook up to my GTX 1080 Ti.
@JourneymanGeek Even desktop performance is going to be low with such limited resources.

hm
my laptop charger seems borked

sorry these screens are actualkly only QuadHD
2560x1440 each

@Burgi 1440p is more reasonable, but your card only supports two monitors.

9:26 AM
thats what i figured

Triple QHD monitors is probably doable with 1 GB of framebuffer, but the GPU itself does not support this configuration.

pretty sure the company won't buy me a new gfx card
i should probably do some work now i've spent 45 mins faffing about trying to look cool with 3 screens :(

A new Quadro P2000 isn't too expensive.

cheers guys :)

$450 isn't asking too much if you're using it for your job.

9:30 AM
yes it is

Seriously?
Blah.

lol
i can't even ask for a laptop
@bwDraco a lot of places scoff at the idea of spending money on employees

Just how financially constrained is your company?

lol not at all
doesn't mean they agree to buying equipment which would be helpful
you've got a lot to learn about working environments it seems
here I can't even get a usb flash drive for example

Managers don't understand that by being more willing to purchase better equipment, they're investing in higher productivity.

9:33 AM
or they do, but they get growled at for using budgets

@djsmiley2k WTF.

when i was on the service desk I ended up bringing in my own external drive for imaging a load of laptops, because otherwise it was taking 3 days to get each one setup
i could do one in two hours using that thing

> Do you use the best tools money can buy?
> Writing code in a compiled language is one of the last things that still can’t be done instantly on a garden variety home computer. If your compilation process takes more than a few seconds, getting the latest and greatest computer is going to save you time. If compiling takes even 15 seconds, programmers will get bored while the compiler runs and switch over to reading The Onion, which will suck them in and kill hours of productivity.

Debugging GUI code with a single monitor system is painful if not impossible. If you’re writing GUI code, two monitors will make things much easier.
Companies need to learn that buying better equipment is an investment in productivity.

9:59 AM
(May 2015)
I lament not having as much physical table area these days.

10:12 AM
> How many bits in the modulus [512]: 2048
% Generating 2048 bit RSA keys, keys will be non-exportable...
[OK] (elapsed time was 2 seconds)

--hostname--(config)#ip ssh version 2
Please create RSA keys to enable SSH (and of atleast 768 bits for SSH v2).
wtf :/

10:23 AM
the insurance company are refusing to payout for the robbery so the company is having to to foot the bill for new machines, repairs to all the doors and doorframes and improving the security

o_O
Do you know why they refusing?

the thieves damaged the alarm at some point during the day, so the contacts were out of alignment. this meant the people leaving couldn't set the alarm.
the building/company owner was in the local pub entertaining a new client and said "don't worry about it, we'll take a look in the morning"
the insurers said we should have called the alarm people immediately

10:48 AM
lol
so technically you should be able to claim against the owners insurance.

@Burgi ow

@djsmiley2k the owner of the building is the owner of our company

ah derp
then yes, i agree with the insurers :/
'ah our alarm is derp, oh well' :/

11:15 AM
@Burgi Wait, so the alarm was broken for less than a day when the roberry occurred?
And the office was empty for a single night?
It smells strongly of an inside job.
Didn't the cameras catch anything?
Oh, let me guess. They stole the cameras too. And there was no off-site camera backup!

we didn't have cameras
"too expensive"

\o/
@bwDraco looks like someone is (was) learning JS.

@ThatBrazilianGuy never attribute the malice that which can be explained by idiocy.
If it was an inside job, surely they'd want to claim on the insurance too

also they wouldn't have left all the £400 QuadHD screens

11:41 AM
connected clients, ping through the vpn
my setup is openvpn on site with the ip 3.222, and the server uses 4.1 with dhcp, that part works, the clients get the 4.x ip
the problem is 1) for example, my ip is 4.6, I can ping both 3.222 and 4.1, but not 3.221 (which I can ping from the server), and from the server I can't ping 4.6 but can ping 4.1
server is debian on a vm with a windows 2003 server (I know, I know)
client is windows 10 (doesn't work either with other windows machines)
and hello people ^^

@satibel ask question on the main site
and make it clearer, right now that isn't clear at all.
and '3.222' isn't an ip

well, 192.168.3.222

12:02 PM
ffs
laravel let me create column names with hyphens but won't let me assign data to them or rename them

@djsmiley2k but in the hours of the single night the alarm was off the thieves successfully robbed the office? It's like they go there each night and try every lock in the building, "damn didn't work but maybe tomorrow", every night of the year until they find a broken alarm
Doesn't make sense

@ThatBrazilianGuy no, they sabotage the alarm

@ThatBrazilianGuy they sabotaged the alarm

come back later, check it's still busted.
if it is, go ahead and rob the place
they rely on people being idiots and not reporting and getting the broken alarm fixed

Oh. Well. That makes a lot of sense now. Yeah.

12:09 PM
why is this guy using a reprocipucating saw on a carboardbox

!! Caaaaat

12:22 PM
i think this PC needs flattening and rebuilding

12:34 PM
 $person->telephone=\request('i-phone'); // TODO: pay apple royalties
well it amused me for 5 minutes :)

Bob
@bwDraco ehhhhhhhh. depends on your environment and what you're debugging
I still use a single monitor most of the time
web dev is one of the few exceptions where double often (not always) helps

Bob
12:55 PM
@satibel those butchered addresses hurt my brain :P

hmmm @Bob @allquixotic you ever come accross a small (like really small) poe powered AP ?
so litterally a ap you plug into a poe ethernet port, to provide wifi

@Bob mentally add 192.168. before ^^

looks like the unifi stuff is what they need

Bob
1:16 PM
@djsmiley2k how big? where do you want to use it? ubiquiti has quite a few
there's also some tp-link and xiaomi ones iirc, but the UI isn't as good (and I don't know if they do poe)

hmmm
ideally like pack of cards size

Stars for c please

:O
You testing something?
or just begging for stars? :D

no; "c" is my standard greeting, like hi, and it's supposed to be starred like BenN's "Hi!"
3

1:21 PM
:O

@djsmiley2k you can setup an orange pi zero for that, if you have the time
it can be powered by poe, and has wifi.
and is fairly small

yeah, that's not going to happen lol

why not? do you need a reliable thing?

!!s/c/Hi!/

@FMLCat That didn't make much sense. Use the !!/help command to learn more.
@FMLCat it Hi!an be powered by poe, and has wifi. (source)

1:27 PM
Nope.

I ain't see notin'

1:39 PM
@Bob it'll be in a shop
but it needs to be hidden out the way
(they appently can't run a cable! so instead are just giving access to a single device via wifi)

Bob
2:02 PM
@djsmiley2k range? how many APs? what physical dimensions max? how many clients max? do you need guest networks?
@djsmiley2k oh missed that message
pack of cards, hmm
@djsmiley2k UAP-AC-IW is about 2x a pack of cards
downside is to manage it properly you really should have a controller (software) installed somewhere on the network
though iirc you can use a mobile app if you need to
@djsmiley2k there's also the TL-WR802N, which meets the size requirements, but it's microusb, not poe

so... I fixed my problem, enabled a firewall, then disabled it.

Bob
2:17 PM
I've never used them though

welp, it's going to take AMD about 5 years to catch up with Volta... cya later, RTG, you suck (sorry as I am to say, it's true)

@Bob nod thanks, same one I found.

Bob
2:33 PM
@allquixotic soooooooooooo it's gonna be sold out for about three years cause mining

1 hour later…
4:00 PM
I think those who earn the most with mining are the video board makers
No matter if the crypto coins are up, down or crashing, video hardware is always selling (and expensive)
In fact, it wouldn't surprise me if later we find there's some shady business between the two, ahem, "industries".
(sorry for calling the crypto coin scene an industry)

why do i seem to take the blame for everything?
the primary CTA on a campaign landing page that my ex-minion built has never ever been clicked
in over a year
and apparently that is my fault

lol
stop accepting things

could it not be just a poorly executed marketing campagin that literally nobody is interested in?

Have you actually tried clicking it to make sure it des work?
Now everywhere I read 'high precision timer' hacking intenifies

4:22 PM
@djsmiley2k yes and the download works

@Burgi lul
man the office got so warm i was falling asleep

4:40 PM
>be honest and tell them that.
>get fired.
>never find another job.
>die of pneumonia in the streets.
seems like a flawless plan, burgi?

or more likely
>be honest
>2 hours rant on how the page was bad you can't get out of
I like steam games...
you can't update, you need another 4Gb free on the HDD
*free up 6gb*
you can't update, you need another 2Gb free on the HDD

4:56 PM
oh, for whatever reason, when I emptied the trash can, it kept the files on disk ...

o_O

I proceed to delete a 30GB $RECYCLE.BIN

\o/#

yaaay
I should get another HDD
> Based on high customer request, we now support viewing and changing VM settings while a VM is running, similar to how you can in Hyper-V Manager. On Generation 2 VMs, you can change general settings, memory setting, checkpoint setting and add disks and network adapters.
You can also enable nested virtualization when creating a VM, or from the processor settings of an existing (stopped) VM.
being able to add ram to a running vm seems nice

Bob
5:17 PM
@satibel what's that for?

It's amazing how much more efficient the hypervisor is with dynamic memory allocation :)

@Bob windows server tech preview

Bob
ah

5:42 PM
@CanadianLuke CONTAINERS
the best hypervisor is one that doesn't exist

I don't have experience with containers yet... I know the theory behind them is that they virtualize the application only, is that right?

Bob
@CanadianLuke they virtualise nothing
they just stop things inside one container from seeing things in other containers
(all actual application code runs native. containers require kernel support.)
