9:03 AM
morning

@Ave i'm also sceptical that billions of devices run linux

Bob
@Burgi depends if you're counting networking devices (read: every home router) and virtual machines

Ave
@Burgi i mean
If we count android devices then it's definitely over a billion

@Bob good point

Bob
9:10 AM
oh yea, those too

Ave
If we count inactive devices too, there's billions already

Bob
it's become de facto standard for IoT
which is a pity... it's pretty wasteful there

Ave
@Bob what became standard? Linux?

android

Bob
@Ave linux, yea
I supposesomething easily upgradeable makes up for the extra resources, though. especially if it needs wireless networking

9:40 AM
@Bob also easier to code for than bare metal embedded things
hm. stuff that annoys me
an open source project I run on its own subdomain rebranded...
renaming the subdomain and changing stuff is annoying. So is leaving non matching names
ok, vaguely creepy
I got spam using 1) my real name 2) appropriate to the country I'm from... for cleaning services

10:03 AM
@Bob Tivos?
Smart TV's
Nest Devices, CCTV networks, Bus Stops, advertising boards, etc

2 hours later…
11:37 AM
hmmmmmmmm vlan traffic isn't leaving the switch, i don't think
/me is confuse
i need an expert to help me learn

Bob
@djsmiley2k hi! I used a switch, once!
(what's your config?)

:D
pair of nexus 5k's doing vtp to give the vlans to the edge switches
that's coming down over a chanel group, successfully works etc

Bob
i has no idea

bring client online in the vlan and no traffic is going anywhere it seems
:D

Bob
I understand like half the words lol

11:48 AM
yeah, i feel like I'm only understanding half
the thing is having never setup something like this before, I'm not sure where we start to debug it

i think we had a power spike earlier
all the machines turned off and 2 screens are now not turning on

12:40 PM
joys
Soooooooooooo the specter patch broke shadowing for rdp server users o_O

Q: Remove weekday from Gnome title bar

That Brazilian GuyI'm using GNOME Shell 3.26.2 on Fedora 26. The date and time area on the title bar shows the week day: I want to get rid of the weekday. How do I proceed? Settings > Details > Date & time lets me change the date but not change how the date is displayed (save for picking the "AM/PM" vs "24h...

!!hv

Hey it's me your friendly ghost vampire
But this tiny ridiculous thing is annoying me and I don't know how to turn it off

??
Oh, ew
No idea :<
Gnome, blarugh

Still a better love story shell than Unity.

Ave
1:20 PM
NO
Unity was good
gnome 3... egh
no

1:31 PM
@ThatBrazilianGuy you need to rename yourself to @ThatBrazilianVampire
i have zero opinion on linux shells

Ave
zsh is the only real shell

Gnome isn't a shell tho

Ave
^
gnome is a DE

even gnome-terminal isn't a shell

Ave
it's a terminal emulator

1:34 PM
Shell, WM, DE, it's confusing
@djsmiley2k Then why is the command gnome-shell?

because derp

@Burgi Nah, I'm not fond of politics, all the monsters are in Congress

Ave
Shell: sh/bash/zsh/fish/whatever
Terminal Emulator: urxvt/xterm/gnome-terminal/terminator/guake/whatever
DE: kde/lxde/xfce/unity/cinnamon/whatever
WM: kwin/openbox/dwm/i3/awesome/whatever
you learn what is what in time

Ave
there's a lot of customization options in linux and I really love that tbh
I use zsh-terminator-kde(plasma)-kwin, but someone using the same stuff can get a COMPLETELY different looking and feeling system than mine

1:43 PM
Hey @Ave I saw this on Facebook and thought of you:

o_O
2

@Ave heh. I use bash-gnome-terminal-cinnamon-cinnamon

Ave
@ThatBrazilianGuy can agree with "gay space rocks"

bash-xfce-terminal-xfce4-xfce4

Ave
@allquixotic I am not the biggest fan of mint, but whatever you can have a comfortable workflow in is good I guess

1:45 PM
@Ave Heh

I don't actually use Mint; I install Cinnamon on Ubuntu

Ave
oh

/me wibbles

I've tried Cinnamon on Fedora too but I don't think they ship packages... my main thing is I don't really care for the UI of Unity or Gnome-shell (and besides, Unity is being killed by Canonical)

Ave
try out cinnamon on arch?
arch is beautiful

1:51 PM
I used to use KDE a lot, but stopped around a fairly late release of 4.x, maybe 4.8 or so, after they'd at least stabilized it from the travesty that KDE 4.0 was

@ThatBrazilianGuy try watching "Devilman Crybaby"

it just seems to have really weird UX paradigms that aren't anywhere else, and still pretty crashy
though I will admit, they were a pioneer and did things that MSFT ended up copying later

Ave
I don't have a lot of issues with kde
just some issues with kwin crashing when I open games sometimes, with kde using a ton of memory and a couple other things (like when I run kwin again, there's a tiny square on top left of second screen, and that blocks the close button)

@tereško I've been hearing a lot about it these last few days. Is it good? What's the plot / premise?

have seen the first 4 episodes
it's good so far
premise .. emmm ... demons are secretly taking over human society

2:12 PM
I love crazy cartoons such as Adventure Time, Gumball and the like

Ave
same

@Ave NSFW?

Ave
@Burgi sfw

hmmm...

Safe for kids, even

Bob
2:24 PM
> I have installed the patch KB4057142 on a test RDS 2016 with success.

We can now shadow sessions again.
@allquixotic only problem is no one uses webasm yet :P
@allquixotic KDE 5.x is actually pretty nice
though I haven't really used desktop Linux in a while and the last few times were LXDE or Fluxbox
:42354506 try "I want to see clippy"
hm, I wonder if that's actually right...
I want to see clippy
:(

how do i make clippy appear
nope

Bob
hmm... it matches...

eh, they both work

Bob
2:35 PM
I'm trying to summon clippy

I want to find an easter egg in chat.
bleh

I think you have to make it a longer statement

Hello
How do I make clippy materialize?
^ works

How do I a b?
2
^ doesn't work

Bob
How do I a
How do I aa
How do I aaa

How do I aa b

Bob
2:36 PM
How do I aaaa
How do I aaaaa aaaaa aaaaa

How do I aa bb

How do I make clippy materialize?

Bob
there we go
How do I aaaaa aaaaa?

lol

Bob
2:37 PM
How do I aaaaa?
How do I a a?
the last two didn't work
How do I aaaaa aa?
How do I aaaaa aaaa?

How do I how do I how do I?
2

Bob
How do I aaaaaaaaaa?
How do I aaaaaaaaaaa?

Bob
ahhhhh
It needs at least 11 chars

the time for starring is now.

2:38 PM
rofl... that's so random...

Bob
doesn't care about spaces

I'm trying to 1234567890

Bob
I wonder if the q mark is important, but I'm heavily chat throttled now sooo

I'm trying to 12345678901

Bob
How do I aaaaaaaaaaaa
yea it needs the question mark for the "how" construct

2:39 PM
yeah, I don't get "you need 11 chars in the thing you're trying to do" from that regex at all

Bob
@allquixotic well, aaaaaaaaaa but aaaaaaaaaaa worked

Ave
how do I '); DROP TABLE Users
4

Bob
you try :P

How do I summon Clippy?
that's the one I always remember

Bob
I'm trying to murder clippy

2:40 PM
How do I murder clippy and not get caught?

Bob
A classic

omg, I could mess with Cavil
!!say I'm trying to murder Clippy

I'm trying to murder Clippy

Bob
@allquixotic ?

I wonder if that'll mess up the JS

Bob
2:41 PM
lol I can only post two messages every 11 seconds now
thanks balpha

Cavil's FF now has a clippy prompt :P
can you have multiple?
I'm trying to have multiple clippy prompts and I'm insecure about having a long enough message
How do I get multiple clippy prompts on the screen at the same time?
omg, it works
over a period of ... probably days, you could create so many nested clippy prompts on Cavil that you could OOM my server
definitely need to resource limit the Cavil container
of course, if you did OOM my server, the only negative effects I'd likely experience are (1) Cavil's Firefox would get killed by the oomkiller and (2) leading up to that, if I weren't attentive, page cache (um, L1 ARC) getting eroded would kill performance of other stuff

Bob
@allquixotic I'd say good luck, at 2 messages per 10s :P
and it has to be in this room specifically

oh, it wouldn't work in Bot Overflow?

Bob
@allquixotic pretty sure it's a room-specific egg
we should add an owner-level bot restart command
the hard part is it needs to be synced to the driver
orrrrrrrrrrrrrrr
I could embed the script in a userscript
which would load on every chat load, and not have to be externally injected

I'd say unless we can make the driver (and FF itself) restart from a chat command it's probably not worth the effort? :/
you could create a small HTTP server that listens on localhost and do an XHR -- same origin policy, blah
actually, onebox might do it: write a custom !! command that contains a URL to http://localhost:whatever/something.jpg

2:50 PM
How do I say hello?

Cavil would load it, thus sending the request to the local HTTP server :D
@satibel "say hello" is only 8 non-space characters so it won't trigger Clippy; you need 11 characters excluding whitespace after the "How do I" or "I'm trying to" bit

Bob
@allquixotic no need to xhr, it's pretty easy to hook up webdriverio to content script commands
@allquixotic or write a systemd service with memory limit and auto restart

anyway, hello beautiful people of root access

@satibel Hey, what about me?

got a god damn openvpn server acting up I setup at my old workplace, the host was shut down with the vm running.

2:56 PM
@satibel Hello

@ThatBrazilianGuy hello people with low self esteem too :p

@Bob being able to restart from chat would be pretty nice, in principle... tempted...

remember how I couldn't get someone to install a smart meter at the weekend?
Now they offering a £50 amazon voucher if they can do it by the end of feb xD

then make them install a playing-dumb meter :p

Bob
3:00 PM
@allquixotic I might try tomorrow

@DavidPostill idk why but that abbreviation seems so disruptive and out-of-place :']

anyone knows what could cause an openvpn server to be pingable after a reboot by the clients but be unable to ping the clients?
iptables is on allow all.

Bob
3:31 PM
@satibel connected clients?
ping through the public internet or the VPN? what's your routing (table)? what OS are the clients running?

The clients have firewalls blocking pings?

Bob
holy
this website
one autoplaying video isn't enough
one page has three autoplaying videos that activate as you scroll down
you can't even escape them!

immediately stop using the site.
Germany's suspended all long distance trains due to a storm?!

how did searching for "Detroit" on Youtube put that video near the top of the result list

@djsmiley2k they decommissioned all their nuclear power stations and moved to solar

3:43 PM
;D

obviously they forgot that in the winter solar power is useless and therefore don't have the grid capacity to run their trains
the UK should have been building new nuclear 10 years ago

weren't we trying to get the french to build one for us?

its a clean, safe form of power generation
yeah
the french company went bust

and then the chinese
Should of just Asked North Korea ;D

the chinese pulled out because the french company went bust
why?

3:46 PM
Ah ok i don't remember
they appently good at this sort of thing ;D

we want it to fracking work!

Right, do I build out router for a store, or work on a project I have no clue how to progress

the first one

hmmm
I can't add a mac filter, for the same device twice, on this wireless controller, even when it's for different networks :/

Bob
Those darned aliens firing missles

4:27 PM
@Bob are they cyclops missiles?

3 hours later…
7:09 PM
....:<7

8:02 PM
i'm amazed how dead it is in here this evening...

i just got home

@Burgi D:

Ave
@djsmiley2k some of my discord servers are super silent too

omg did america get nuked?
:/

Ave
well

8:11 PM
we can only hope

Ave
the members in americas seem to be online
people from alaska and pernambuco and colorado and stuff
no one from outside americas but me

just not... chatting
weird

Ave
did europe get nuked is the real question

oh
I mean there's some HUGE storms atm

Ave
I guess

8:12 PM
most of turkey is in asia!

Ave

Stackoverflow normally.

Q: Which computer science / programming Stack Exchange do I post in?

Taylor HustonThere seems to be more than a few computer science/programming Stack Exchange networks (is that the correct term?). Stack Overflow, being the first, has by far the most users, questions, and answers. What is the reasoning for creating the others, and are there clear guidelines for which kinds o...

Thank you all :)

@intel Intel engineer: After microcode update, the server/desktop OS crashes. System won't boot. Will issue another update. Intel PR: Let us say, "higher system reboots" instead of crash. Intel engineer: Why? Intel Lawyer: We need to save Intel stock value & avoid lawsuits.

Ave
8:51 PM
@bwDraco "We need to save Intel stock value & avoid lawsuits." is basically how intel had been in last couple weeks

It's all been panic, panic, panic.

@allquixotic Isn't "Spectre" not patchable ?

Bob
9:37 PM
so what's going on over in the Netherlands
also, morn

10:04 PM
@Bob Big storm. All intercity trains cancelled.

Bob
oof

Check out the vids on that page ...

@DavidPostill I like how in the second there's a guy just casually riding his bike along the road while everyone else is trying to stand up.

is it wrong of me to laugh at the people being blown along the floor like crisp packets?

Bob
10:56 PM
hm

@Taz8du29 It's absolutely patchable; with (1) a CPU microcode update and (2) kernel patches (such as recompiling with -retpoline), Spectre can be addressed. To do so with no or minimal performance impact requires new CPU hardware.

11:23 PM
@allquixotic Do you think they'll do microcode updates for anything prior to haswell ?

Bob
@allquixotic IIRC it actually requires patches to every binary.
I mean, kernel patches can protect against access to kernel memory
But every userspace program that needs a security boundary needs its own patch too.

@Bob That is meltdown you're talking about, no ?

Bob
@Taz8du29 No.
Spectre can be used to access kernel memory too.
It's just not quite as straightforward as Meltdown.
But that actually makes Spectre harder to patch, too.

@Bob Oh, okay. I though it was only about uncleared or preloaded cache in the CPU

Bob
Anyway, on the plus side, most userspace programs don't have security boundaries. Mostly things like password managers, encryption programs, etc..
@Taz8du29 It turns out kernel memory can also be in the cache, sooooo.
IIRC the patches are mostly adding lfences around any security boundaries.
Though I could be misremembering, I stopped actively following this a bit ago.

11:32 PM
@Bob Ah, yeah, ok ... kind of an issue here :V

11:47 PM
well still no snow here
> Lifeless Planet is an atmospheric Puzzle/Platform/Exploration game. The puzzles are never difficult, the platforming is never frustrating
YES YES IT IS FRACKING FRUSTRATING!!!!!!

Bob
hmmm, interesting
@allquixotic OVH seems to be offering some weird form of managed webhosting: labs.ovh.com/cloud-web
Sounds like a shared hosting control panel with a dedicated (per-user/site) VPS
I wonder what its pricing will be like. Likely not much more than the raw VPS.

...never mind.
I don't want to get the chatbot suspended.
