@McDonald's might want to avoid approving edits that fix a spammers own spam link...: superuser.com/review/suggested-edits/684427 just saying
@Run5k ^^ see that edit.

Bob
12:32 AM
@Burgi you probably have the wrong type of alarm
where is it relative to the kitchen, anyway?
kitchens should have a photoelectric alarm
ionisation ones are too sensitive to normal cooking, so they need to be further away

12:54 AM
@ThatREDACTEDGuy Label the ends [device 1]--[WAN]---------------------[LAN]--[device 2]

1:11 AM
Is that clear?

@Ramhound Please clarify what you are saying was done incorrectly for those that approved that again? Unless I'm interpreting the review history wrong, it was approved for a valid link vs a bad invalid link. Are you saying if a link to a URL points to www.imaginetricks.com it is spam? The link body title even states it's about what the question refers to.
I'm all for learning but I think you need to break this down for me sir and explain in a manner that can teach me something rather than just saying I did something wrong like I should simple know something is so obvious that two people approved it.

@ThatREDACTEDGuy Yea, it's clear enough.

@JourneymanGeek ^^ when you get time, would you mind seeing what I did wrong here that I should have known with that edit approval?
The one Ramhound is calling me out on in particular as I don't see what's so obvious with this but again I'm no spam detection expert on SE posts so things slipping thru the cracks would not surprise me.

Sorry but this is pretty obvious to me: someone other than the author inserted a really questionable link
That is, if it's this what @Ramhound means: superuser.com/posts/649997/revisions
But I don't see you approving edits on that question.

1:27 AM
@McDonald's The edit was made by someone other than the original question asker. It added a link (spam, as far as Ramhound is concerned) that was attempting to advertise a product.
@ThatREDACTEDGuy Approval is here: superuser.com/review/suggested-edits/684427

It added a link on the question, to make matters worse.

Yes, exactly.

So the red flag is if someone other than the OP suggests an edit with an added URL then that deserves for attention than just confirming the link it value and looking it over in detail?

Well, we shouldn't blame @McDonald's because (s)he actually just accepted an edition wich corrected a link.

No, the spammer came back, 6 months later and corrected the link.

1:30 AM
The approval of the spam insertion was here: superuser.com/review/suggested-edits/571359

That's a bit off for me as well.

I'll pay extra special attention I suppose moving forward but I'm glad I'm learning stuff still and you guys are here to help me!!

@McDonald's I think at the end of the day, if someone has made an edit to another users Question or Answer, it's worth looking more closely into what they want to achieve, and if it's relevant or necessary.

Gotcha but it appears multiple people were gotten by this particular attempted spam link per the superuser.com/review/suggested-edits/571359 from then and then me and the other guy today (or whenever that was)
@MichaelFrank I'll use your advice moving forward for sure!!

Can anyone tell me whether mods are able to see deleted comments?
And is there a limit to how long for?

1:44 AM
@McDonald's you approved the edit where the spammer fixed the link without verifying what the link actually was. Never said you approved the original revision that added the original link.
Yes, any answer that links to that domain is spam.
See my image, the fake article was submitted by the same user who suggested the edit, that alone is reason to reject it.

@Hashim Yes, They can and I just deleted my old obsolete comments
Your welcome to discuss my comments here just take it out of the comment section

@Hashim yes we can see em. No, there's no limit

noisy comments about my deleted commentary will be flagged....
I deleted and flagged the existing comments for a reason...

I understand that, @Ramhound. I'm asking purely because if this is going to become a regular thing - you hastily posting comments in fields out of your expertise, being proven wrong, and then deleting them and the context with them - I want to make sure the moderators are able to see all instances so I have a case to make in Meta.

1:53 AM
However yeah, chat works better if it's back an forth. There's talk of rejigging the language around comments to emphasize it is for clarifying things not... Well... Comments

Thanks @thesecretmaster, @JourneymanGeek.

@McDonald's I wasn't calling you out exactly, just was trying to let you know, you approved a bad edit so you could learn.

@Hashim nothing wrong with being wrong

@Ramhound Ya, I know sir!!

So you plan to call me out on meta or something?

1:55 AM
@Hashim You can always take a screen shot of the comments!!
@Ramhound No, you're not really HarryMC are you?

No, I am DJT, SE is my other sin after twitter
........ :-)

LOL!!!
DJT huh!

While I was wrong "you hastily posting comments in fields out of your expertise" the topic was NOT out of my field of expertise. Again, stop saying that.

I'd disagree, @Journeyman. See the deleted comments on this answer: superuser.com/a/1242971/323079. Consistently being wrong while insisting you're right and harassing people who are right, not to mention providing dangerous advice, IS bad.
No, not this time, I think we understand each other well enough. I said if this is was going to become a regular thing.

Dangerous advice?

1:59 AM
I already mentioned in those comments what that was.

Like stick your wet finger in that light socket type of dangerous?

Never suggested dangerous advice
If you did then it was deleted before I saw it

You posted a flippant comment a week or so ago saying that my 2TB of data was gone because I'd run a format for a few seconds on my drive. I don't know whether that's an area of your expertise or not, but what I do know is that you shouldn't be commenting on i. If I had been a less experienced user with no concept of data recovery, you'd have been the catalyst for their losing 2TB of data.
Same with your lack of knowledge on the intricacies of the Registry.
value=data
[Key\key]
"value"="data"
...is basic syntax for Registry files
If you don't know that, you really shouldn't be reviewing answers on the Registry
Regardless of what you think you know on the subject

@Hashim You can always take a screen shot of anything you feel is disallowed comment wise and then you'd have that to share with others to help clarify. Don't forget about: superuser.com/help/be-nice

I miss read the code due to poor formatting which is the reason I wanted context
Instead i was dragged into the third circle of hell perhaps fourth circle
all because I thought the answer could benefit from more information

2:06 AM
No, that would be a strawman
All because you accused the answerer of being wrong when he wasn't.
Regardless, this is done

Being wrong is not disallowed or else I'd have been booted a few times already. I've been locked from review at least twice for making stupid mistakes with test questions so I know I make mistakes.

@Hashim ehh. You're taking it somewhat personally

Honestly this isn't the first time this happened, but I don't think that we should go that hard on the user.
We all make mistakes.

And sometimes by accidentally clicking leave open when I meant the other option. I hate it when I make those mistakes in review.
When I get angry, I go over to Politic SE and cause trouble there... lol

Being nice is a hard line to draw when people comment out of turn and cause more problems for everyone. I've always stayed well away from contributing ina definitive tone to questions/answers that I'm not 100% sure on, so it's a personal annoyance for me when I don't see that behaviour from other people. It's carelessness/hubris

2:11 AM
I made a comment, you thought was "dangerous" but I deleted it without much thought after i say an answer that was correct/helpful

I'm taking it personally because it's the second time in less than two weeks
I'm done with it anyway

And yet it continues...

Sorry if I offended you @Ramhound
Tc of yourself everyone, bedtime for me

@McDonald's its a pretty typical thing spammers do

@Hashim Keep your head up, sir!!

2:12 AM
just be a little bit more skeptical of edit reviews

@McDonald's I'd rather not, I need to sleep

LOL!!
True
@JourneymanGeek Yes sir, I will be paying extra close attention!!

(also at work. popping over randomly cause for once I am sitting at my desk)

I think I also left a comment for 50 rep to comment that was another clear spam @bwDraco tagged me on before it was removed. I'd like to learn from that one too but it disappeared content wise as spam but I see my review 50 rep comment.

@hashim ....data recovery is one of my weaker knowledge areas doesn't mean I have been correct before. Only indicated the data was wrong because of the vast amount of tools you used that indicated that very thing. For you to hold a deleted comment, one I deleted over my head, is ludicrous. I don't plan a party when I decide to delete a comment because I realize I was wrong I just do it

2:16 AM
The paper clip guy popped up on that comment

@McDonald's In that case, the post simply provides a brief description of a solution to the problem with a software recommendation, linking to an obscure software blog website. The full details are not provided in the answer; this is to encourage users to click through. The blog post will often describe one or more alternative solutions, which tend to be technically complicated, then promote a simpler solution using a commercial program.
Let me investigate this case further...

The one I found? The article isn't even about running Windows on Android devices :-$

On the other post, the blog post describes a solution that uses a trial of Adobe Acrobat to encrypt PDF. There's no direct promotion of a product on that blog post, but the company running the site provides its own commercial solution. Sneaky, huh?
In the case you mention, it's a direct promotional blog post.
Sometimes, the goal is not to directly get people to buy a product, but to enhance their Google ranking.

Didn't see the other post :-)

In other cases, an answer may contain no links at all, but mention a product. The spammer may not even mention any specific product, but use cherry-picked words that are intended to be searched by the reader. Together with the aforementioned "spamdexing", a wily spammer can indirectly promote products without raising suspicion from all but the most keenest-eyed reviewers.

2:30 AM
The last guy to spam SU got about 30 calls from me (technical router help scam website)
After various things he said which I cannot say here the line stopped working :-)
was dlink/netgear help.

Helloooo

hii

Ughhhhh
Turns out the source of my FiOS TV problems has been that we don't have a MoCA 2.0 compatible splitter
It has to be "passive" and allow active return channel so the devices can talk
Weirdest hackjob on old tech... I swear
Bring on the USB-C IPTVs!

Bob
3:01 AM
o.O

@bwDraco Wow... I didn't know all this and the spamdexing of search engine indexes manipulating top URL listed when searched increasing ranks, etc. with some of the tactics. Interesting, very very interesting.

Turns out I have been forwarding my voice mails to Google Voice for 3+ years
lol
Oooops]

Is it better to have an erroneous false positive "flag" or something questionable rather than "Leave Open", "Looks Good", etc.? I can sway more one way than the other if that's better as sometimes I'm on the fence about some and decide I should say it's good in case I'm wrong. Wonder if I should actually be skipping those that I feel really on the fence about?

if you're not sure, use the skip button

3:17 AM
A question being placed on hold isn't a bad thing, its a signal that something should be fixed, if you are on the fence about something listen to your gut.

3:30 AM
@McDonald's If unsure, post it here or use a mod attention flag. Avoid oneboxing suspected spam; add some text so it doesn't do that.

3:57 AM
@bwDraco Brain freeze over here on the oneboxing term... So when I added the 50 rep comment that was the right thing to do with the text rather than skip or looks ok? Is that what you're saying.
And I understand to post here for sure tho

@McDonald's In chat, bare links to certain resources generate a special box, like this:

Q: Which links and sites are handled specially in chat?

Juha SyrjäläThere is a special linking to some sites in chat, also known as "onebox". What is the full list of supported and integrated sites? Return to FAQ index

Amazing, I have to be told things twice sometimes—I know I say that in a chat before and wasn't sure what it meant, read up the thread some and figured it out.... Du'oh
Or maybe I just asked someone before and they told me then and I forgot again... lol

Inserting any text in addition to the link prevents it from oneboxing.

ah... I did that in chat before and you probably told me about it, I think. I did that exact thing on a post with profanity I think... one I reported as spam, etc.
Yes, I know exactly what you are saying.
@bwDraco Thanks for all the detail sir!

Another goal that blocking C&P can accomplish is to make legitimate users think your site is broken. This in turn can help minimize your bandwidth and hosting expenses. — Tim Grant Aug 13 at 16:03

actually u guys might know
a graphics lecturer once told me you should never film flame
as it does bad things to a camera sensor
was he high?

@djsmiley2k how bright is the flame?

@Burgi a candle, close up??
it was years ago

1:31 PM
could do

and I've learn that a lot of what he said was utter bs.
So now I just remembered that.

@djsmiley2k heh, my "thing you gotta see if you get a 4k screen" is... all... flames...

depends on the brightness and exposure length

@djsmiley2k phone is working as good as it was working before, no sensor issues.

wow ok
I knew the risks involved, but figured that a quick few shots at the sun would be ok in live view with a 400 mm lens at f32. After 4 shots the screen turned gray and camera rebooted. Seems fine now though. — user10069 Jun 5 '12 at 22:26

Bob
@djsmiley2k depends on the flame, and the lens

i had a filter on mine

Bob
your typical phone camera lens isn't exactly powerful

1:48 PM
Oh wow
I was right about the mysteriously powerful motherboard.

Bob
@djsmiley2k hm?

usb device backfeeding power was keeping the leds on, and stopping the cmos reset.
That doesn't at all sound like a trap

2:34 PM
@JourneymanGeek We're talking about a 400mm f/2.8 lens and a 6-second exposure. This is not a normal situation.
The lens itself runs more than $10k.
I felt this was rather contrived.
Hopefully, when the next US eclipse rolls around in 2024, I'll be there with the right gear.

that moment when you just happen to be filming a perfectly scripted video and 'accidently' melt your camera.

@bwDraco just get a scope and the right filters, should only be about $300

Jason Punyon on August 22, 2017

In a previous post, we used the Stack Overflow Trends tool to look at how technology usage in mobile development has changed over time. But we’ve often found that popular languages, platforms and technologies differ across cities and countries as well.

In this post we’ll explore where mobile development happens, and what these countries might have in common. We’ll look at Android and iOS, and pour one out for Windows Phone.

We geocode all of our traffic and know every question’s tags, so we can plot the percentage of traffic from each country that goes to questions with the Android tag. …
