@bwDraco that said, things like that should fail safe not fail live.

Bob
@bwDraco then use the brakes.

Hi,I received Creator Update for Windows 10 more than a month ago,but I don't receive nothing for the second pc.Can,please,someone explain to me why?Thank you

@ubu16 It's a staged rollout. Microsoft seems to have taken much longer than expected, though.
Also, what processor?
(systems with certain Atom processors won't get the update due to a compatibility problem which Intel will not address because they've terminated support)

@bwDraco,The processor is Intel i7

@ubu16 Okay, I'd suppose it's Microsoft not sending out the upgrade to that system.

12:11 AM
@bwDraco,have I just to wait?

Major updates by vendors like Microsoft and Google tend to be done in a staged fashion, gradually delivering the update to select devices and users over time until all eligible devices are updated. The idea is so that 1) server load is kept in check and 2) the rollout can be stopped if a serious problem is discovered that didn't appear in earlier testing.
@ubu16 Technically, you can use the media creation tool to download an ISO image of the installation disk for the latest version of Windows, but it's not exactly recommended for the Creators Update.

@bwDraco,I prefer to wait.Thank you

The point is, Microsoft is trying to make this process as problem-free as possible. If you go ahead and do this, you're on your own. I tried it on one of my computers and it worked, but there's no guarantee it'll succeed.
Does that machine have anything in the way of unusual hardware?

@bwDraco,no it doesn't
@fixer1234,is this the right way to get in touch with you?

Bob
@ubu16 laptop or desktop?

12:24 AM
@Bob,is a laptop or notebook

What model?

@ubu16, that should work, but nothing has shown up in my inbox yet. Sometimes there's a long delay in the system processing the notifications.

Bob
@fixer1234 notifications are only instant if you select that option

@Bob, didn't know that. Where do you set that?

@bwDraco,Asus AK73

Bob
12:27 AM
@fixer1234 in your chat profile
prefs tab
hm, perhaps not quite instant

@Bob, thanks. I'll have to check that out.

@ubu16 Are you sure this is a laptop?
The only thing I can find from a Google search are references to an extremely old motherboard.
Is this a typo?

Bob
@bwDraco lol, I know what you mean but that's a pretty funny way of phrasing it
"I know you're sitting in front of it and all, but are you sure it's a laptop?"
:D

Are you referring to the ASUS ROG G73Jh?
(older gaming laptop - older hardware of this sort are more likely to hit compatibility issues with newer versions of Windows)

@Bob,yes it is a notebook
@bwDraco,it's not new.It has 4/5 years

12:38 AM
Oh, okay.
Mainstream laptop, Sandy Bridge-era.

@fixer1234,the clean up is required?

GPU's Fermi (GT 540M, 96 CUDA cores in 2 SMs on GF108 @ 700 MHz). However, I don't quite see a reason for there to be compatibility issues - it's still supported.

@ubu16, not "required", but trivial to do to be good citizens. :-)

(though given the age of the GPU, chances are good NVIDIA will drop support for Fermi soon, though this suggests otherwise)

@bwDraco,thank you,as I said,I'll wait.Because I don't like to force the update
@fixer1234,I'm a little bit scared because I have the transcription and are 35 pages.I'll take a look in the next days

12:53 AM
@ubu16, I wasn't referring to the chat room, just what's on the answer. :-)

@fixer1234,OK.Now,sorry,but for me it's too late.Have a good night

1:07 AM
Nighty-night.

Bob
2:26 AM
did someone accidentally the whole network?

@Bob yeş

2:46 AM
@Bob easy! Solve the problem by GOING FASTER

Bob
...pawprints on the concrete

Or if you don't like just going faster... as you said yourself, neutral, brakes, turn off the ignition, or if you're macho grab a knife, stab a hole into the bottom of the fuel tank, and wait for all the petrol to leak out
If my motorcycle accelerator got stuck at full the brakes would still stop it, albeit possibly with some loss of control in the wet, but motorcycles also tend to have big red emergency engine cut off switches
Still can't decide what to get as a replacement phone.Xperia XZ Premium has most of the features I want but is expensive as hell, and note 8 isn't out yet
If I had a note 8 I'd prefer some sort of Qualcomm dual-SIM edition though which may or may not exist

Bob
@CircusCat IIRC it's generally a design requirement that brakes on any vehicle can overpower the motor.

@Bob Oh it is? Cool.

@Bob I think you a word there.

Bob
2:57 AM
That's assuming you just jam the brakes on. Repeatedly applying them will probably make them overheat.

@Bob is it? Hmm. I always thought it was common on high powered vehicles that brakes can't overpower the engine

Bob
(pump them instead of jamming them on if you don't have ABS)

@ThatREDACTEDGuy nah he totally all the words

Bob
@CircusCat well, at least for all your typical cars, and probably trucks too

My rear brakes can't overpower the engine at full throttle but might if I applied the parking brake and hand brake at the same time.but it's rare for a bike to have a parking brake

2:59 AM
Funnily enough, If I am cycling at high speeds and jam on the breaks without slowing down the pedaling the breaks don't completely stop the bike, although they significantly reduce the speed

Bob
and even if it doesn't work completely, it'll at least slow you down
then, idk, scrape the side against a barrier or something

@CircusCat Well, I was worried for a while, but then I remembered how @Bob is one of the greatest I know.

Bob
@CircusCat mhm, bikes might be an exception

@Bob I like how nonchalantly you say that :P

Bob
@rahuldottech well, if your choices are a head-on collision or ...
hey, if you have enough time to call emergency services then you have enough time to stop the car semi-safely
(also, protip, scraping against a barrier gently is safer than running off the road if it's not perfectly flat and clear. ditches make cars roll.)

3:02 AM
@Bob I'm thinking 1000bhp+ supercars

@Bob Maybe you don't have the ability, even if you have the time...
@Bob Also, gently is probably not possible at high speeds?

Bob
@CircusCat I would still expect the brakes to win, tbh, but it's hard to find evidence

Granted my rear brakes are shit but if my 30bhp scooter engine can overpower the brakes I'm assuming a 1000bhp car doesn't have 40x stronger brakes

Bob
@CircusCat it has 2x the wheels, and a lot more braking assist power! :P

Also it depends a lot on whether it's FWD RWD or AWD
@Bob but only one set of brakes per wheel whereas I have two
My front wheel has two brake disks/rotors which would be enough to stop the engine if it weren't for the fact the engine is connected to the rear wheel
The rear wheel has one rotor but two brakes attached to it which isn't enough to stop the engine, even though with strong enough applicator the wheels will skid to the point that ABS kicks in but I've never managed to get it to skid from a standstill with the engine.
Aka I can't do burnouts or donuts on it but I can drift!

Bob
3:07 AM
> We included the powerful Roush Mustang to test—in the extreme—the theory that “brakes are stronger than the engine.” From 70 mph, the Roush’s brakes were still resolutely king even though a pinned throttle added 80 feet to its stopping distance. However, from 100 mph, it wasn’t clear from behind the wheel that the Mustang was going to stop. But after 903 feet—almost three times longer than normal—the 540-hp supercharged Roush finally did succumb, chugging to a stop in a puff of brake smoke.

Interesting

Bob
though they do mention that it's possible that the brakes don't work at all ... which is a giant O_O

Dell updated the Synaptics touchpad driver on the Alienware 13 R3 recently...

Bob
hm. is it even legal for brakes to not be mechanically linked on cars?

@Bob at 70mph you're probably in a pretty high gear ...

3:07 AM
it's not as good as the Macbook Pro still, but it's MUCH better at accurate palm rejection and scrolling

@allquixotic hmm I should see what dell has updated for my alien ware 15.

Bob
@CircusCat apparently on some pickups the rear drum brakes are too weak too
@CircusCat yea, but that's kinda the point - if you're in a low enough gear that it won't work... well, you're not going so quick

I suspect if they repeated the test with the mustang starting from a standstill in 1st gear the results will be different

@CircusCat If it's an R3 I'd imagine it's the same driver
R2 or older, who knows

@allquixotic it's an R4 I believe. But I can't remember. The 15 and 17 are the same motherboard but ones an r3 and ones an r4
Yup mines an R3

3:10 AM
so the generations don't match up? the 13" might even be a newer model and the R3 could be the "R4" from the others

Bob
@CircusCat maybe

the Alienware 13 R3 is Kaby Lake.

@allquixotic yeah The same gen 17 with same moBo is an R4 for some reason.

7700HQ base

Basically last year's refresh with new chassis came out as 13r3 15r3 and 17r4.
Both 6700 and 7700 came out in the same generation (13/15r3) as it was a drop in replacement. No revision change with the new CPU
13r3 is available with skylake too. As is the 15R3 and 17R4

Bob
3:13 AM
@CircusCat yea, looks like that might be the case subaruoutback.org/forums/61-general-discussions/…

Mines a skylake, part of why it was £400 cheaper than new
> 5) driver figures he has it under control
6) brakes heat sufficiently they lose effectiveness
7) car accelerates
8) driver regrets not having made out their will
Heh. If there's one benefit to my phone blowing up its that now I can finally have SE chat back on my home/frequently accessed screen in chrome.

Bob
@CircusCat ...blowing up?
@CircusCat yea, seems to be consensus is to shift into neutral
(and if you really are left with hammering on the brakes ... pray, and maybe give the whole external friction thing a try)
I wish mythbusters were still running :P
they did give that whole stopping-a-car-by-shifting-to-reverse a shot

3:29 AM
@Bob that'd just destroy your gearbox

I think my feet are corroding

Bob
@CircusCat O_O

I stepped on a wet patch in the kitchen that had corrosive oven cleaner dripping onto it and now my foot has a big red sore area where it got wet.

Bob
@CircusCat how on earth

3:41 AM
@Bob What, are we not all used to exploding Samsung phones by now?

Bob
@CircusCat ...washed?

@Bob just washed it now. Thought it was just water earlier but obviously wrong.

Bob
ah

My body's pretty tough. Like outdoor animal kind of tough. Which is why it took six hours for any noticeable effect from the "Warning: in case of contact with skin wash immediately for at least 5 minutes" shite

I have no idea what a "blood cauldron" is or how it is related to an eclipse.

5:51 AM
I looked at my SSH logs for the first time and I just feel dirty.

user226528
Logs tend to give this impression.

Bob
6:10 AM
lol
@ATaco I was going over my old servers and found 2-3 GB auth logs on some of them
one of which had a 5 GB disk...

7:04 AM
@ATaco as long as they all failures...

Thankfully.

Q: Ckdisk windows 7 consistently

Ann Zumbluskaswhen I go on my laptop, chkdisk consistently keeps coming up and i allow them to do a do a check and delete and charges like an amount of $130, delete file number what does that mean, are they charging me for that and are taking my files out of my computer, I am afraid to go back on laptop.

it almost sounds like they have been caught by one of those phone scams

Oo
@FleetCommand it's a cauldron. Filled with blood.

@FleetCommand do you not have the ritual human sacrifice during eclipses in your country?
@JourneymanGeek are you having to rescue americans from the sea today?

user226528
@Burgi No. Our tradition consists of rejecting free c****s offer. (Yes, that was sarcasm.)

8:05 AM
@Burgi no I'm a terrier not a seadog.

user226528
@JourneymanGeek Yesterday, I saw a cute stray cat. I said "meow" mockingly, suddenly five different cats started running at me, meowing loudly and consistently.

@FleetCommand hmm... can i have an A please, @Bob?

> it is the first total solar eclipse to make landfall exclusively in the US since independence in 1776.
Be afraid. Be very afraid ;)

:D
that's what made it rare, and the next one is 2190 or something?
@FleetCommand catman!

@DavidPostill you think trump will secede from the union today? ;)

Bob
8:09 AM
@Burgi huh?

its from a TV gameshow with words
bob was the host

Bob
@DavidPostill doesn't chkdsk show some FS metadata locations with the $ symbol?

@djsmiley2k 2024
@Bob Maybe, I can't remember - I was trying to find some example output but I gave up :/

@DavidPostill exclusively in the US?

@djsmiley2k Yes.

8:16 AM
:O
#soon

I am struggling to believe this is a real question superuser.com/questions/1242876/…

@Dave might be pulling power via USB from any number of things
raspi's have this problem sometimes, a powered HDD can backflow power to the device.

Bob
@djsmiley2k that's why I asked what was connected, bt it'd be incredibly dodgy on a desktop mobo

Is Su the right place for a question about sim car and cope pin puk in general ?

8:22 AM
Hmm, interesting

@Bob Asus... ;D

@DavidPostill the path clearly passes over mexico and canada...

@DragandDrop if they are games, arquade may be an option

Bob
@DragandDrop generally? no.
@JourneymanGeek I think they meant "sim card", and PUK is a code you use if you mistype a SIM PIN too many times on a phone

Bob
8:30 AM
A personal unblocking code (PUC), also known as a Personal Unlocking Key (PUK), is used in 3GPP mobile phones to reset a personal identification number (PIN) that has been lost or forgotten. Most mobile telephones offer the feature of PIN protection. After switching on the phone, if the PINi security function is active, the user is requested to enter a 4-8 digit PIN enabling the phone's non-emergency calling functions. If the wrong PIN is typed in more than three times, either the SIM card, the device, or both become locked. They can be returned to their original unlocked state by entering a PUC...

Eitherway, I think the answer is 'Talk to the provider' ?
Another terrible wikipedia page \o/

Bob
lol

@Burgi shrug

8:51 AM
when people raise a ticket for access they already have
I'm tempted to remove it, and tlel them it'll be actioned shortly -_-;

9:29 AM
Its not about how to recover Pin or Puc. But on How it is stored. Because if every thing is simply stored on sim card. It's like having a sticker in your phone with the information needed to unlock it. I thought how does it work? Where it is stored? Uncrypted or hash? Was pretty valuable question in my time.. I don't know when we start giving more importance into solving than understandiong..
I guess it will be focused on security and post on Se security. Sorry for the disturbance in the force.

@DragandDrop It may be a valuable question but it is off-topic for Super User

@DragandDrop it's likely a generated key, from various factors
or it simply verifies it with the network.
In which case, it could just be random.

Thats 2 different thing..

indeed.

Bob
While everyone is so excited about eclipse, please remember there are other fine IDEs and text editors.

9:36 AM
But Sim is Something that didn't really Evolved in the last decade. Every one want a perfect phone double factor unlock but still they have a sim with everything in ''clear" ..

@DragandDrop SIM cards are very complex little computers
There's a lot of scary material out there to drive you paranoid if you feel like it

Bob
It's not that easy.

9:55 AM
@OliverSalzburg, thnks for the ressources!

Hello :)

ooh @Avery there was a game i noticed you owned and i was going to ask your opinion on it

ask away

yes yes, very good
well I'm biased

1:30 PM
@Burgi SHOOT IT!.

user226528
Weird graphics though. I like a game that looks like anime.

user226528
...although I have never played one.

o.O

@FleetCommand buy nekopara
bridge has a bunch of KoL players, so release of WoL got huge hype and many of us bought it

oh wait
nvm
i misread

1:32 PM
and yeah, most of us enjoyed it
including me

user226528
@Avery Doesn't look like a video game. It says "visual novel". I am guessing a 1000-page book full of images?

no
wait
nekopara is a VN
which is uh

user226528
VN=Visual Novel?

my GF really likes walking sims and the new point and click adventure games from telltale

Oh, look, I found a very old Sailor Moon ROM for Sega Genesis.

*mega drive

steam version is censored though

doesn't scale well for TVs
and there is too much reading for a casual game

Actually, I already have "Homeworld: Deserts of Kharak" and "Nier: Automata" on the play queue.

going to try and get my money back

user226528
1:49 PM
@Avery You certainly have a knack for forgetting important details, don't you? I looked this Nekopara in games and didn't find anything. Guess in what category I found it? Japanese *****graphy.

user226528
I don't know why most people think anime=***. I watched Robotek when I was a kid.

14
Q: Why do people tend to think anime is weird porno?

Dimitri mxMs. Steel's comment on my answer made me curious. Why do people not directly exposed to anime tend to think of it as weird porn? It would not be the first time I tell somebody who is not really into anime that I watch it and get questioned as to why I watch animated pornography. Until the point...

@FleetCommand nekopara (at least vol1) has 2 versions: censored and uncensored. One is "cutesy stuff with catgirls", other is "I want to rip my eyes out". Censored is available on steam: store.steampowered.com/app/333600/NEKOPARA_Vol_1

Is that a banned word? :O
@Avery because 50% of it is....
;D
Anyway...
