7:00 PM
sounds like the smoke alarm is positioned wrong tbh

@djsmiley2k thats what i thought

it sounds to me like you've got an lack of oxygen sensing alarm, rather than a smoke detector
lots of steam == less dense? (more dense? I forget) air == less oxygen, goes off
smokers near by but not directly under it? no problem.
this is why lots of hotels now ask you not to leave the bathroom door open while having a shower.

so extractors are only to absorb fatty smells and don't disperse steam and other cooking related out-gassings?

unless it's one of the bonkers ones in a resturant, no, I don't think so.
you know the ones that actually are like a jet engine
if you opened it up, took out the fat absorbing stuff, so it was just a giant pipe
then maybe it'd work
aka a chimney ;D

i thought all smoke detectors contained alpha generators and any particulate build up large enough would set them off

7:05 PM
not any more

Eclipse!!

is it safe to go outside yet, did the eclipse finish ?

Too scared to look to check, may go blind .

its just gray and miserable here

outside looks kinda dark

7:09 PM
@djsmiley2k i think thats just because its night time

#:O
sure it's not the nuclear holocaust?

Looked cool earlier through a welding mask though.
nuclear vaporize

i didn't think welding masks met the high enough filter rating to be safe

Oh, yikes!! I didn't stare though and also had sunglasses on.
Du'oh!!
I'm not blind yet but if I feel the sunburn on my eyeballs later, I will know why though.

heh
i just remember the '99 eclipse and patrick moore shouting at everyone on tv saying welding masks weren't safe enough
@djsmiley2k apparently the two main options are ionizing (alpha source) and optical. both are susceptible to false alarms due to steam etc

7:17 PM
I just looked it up, seems to be a shading filter level rating and it's recommended to use 12 or higher only for eclipses. I'll have to check my neighbor's welding mask now to see if I can spec it out.

or you can use a pinhole projection to observe it
big sheet of cardboard, put a hole in it, the sun will be projected on to the floor in the shaded area
a refracting telescope can also be used to project a focused image on to card

7:34 PM
most wielding masks aren't dark enough

7:46 PM
^
Depends on your mask
Mine is shade 10
You could barely see it at all
I looked straight at it without the mask

@varfirstName Oh dear ...

My eyes are fine
I looked at it through thin clouds :P

A: Why aren't 100% UV blocked sunglasses safe to view an eclipse with?

WetSavannaAnimal aka Rod VanceYou are correct that almost always it is the UV content of sunlight and not its power that is the main hazard in staring at the Sun. The lighting during a total eclipse is one of those situations outside the "almost always". Eclipses did not weigh heavily on our evolution, so we are ill kitted ...

8:37 PM
This is getting crazier and crazier every time I revise it. I'm going to overrun the budget :\

I have a feeling that FF15 will end up being the performance behemoth Crysis was almost six years ago...
Plus this (expected to come later as funds become available): bestbuy.com/site/asus-27-ips-led-hd-gsync-monitor-black/…

@bwDraco Surely that should be FFLV?
XV == 15

I know.
:p

@bwDraco wait 6 months until its closer to release, the hardware will have come down massively

Not sure if I could do that - Volta is expected in early 2018 and I need something to handle Assassin's Creed Origins in the interim.
No exacts on when system building will begin, but I hope it's no later than September.

Hello Super Users! I've got a question about a possible question: What would I need to add to "My computer is being slow when according to my hardware it shouldn't be" to make it on topic?

almost everything
have you checked AV? are you running huge loads to disk? how is it running slow? have you updated the drivers?

@thesecretmaster Complete hardware spec. What software you are running. Why you think it is slow. Output from taskmgr as appropriate showing the problem.

OK. Is "It's slow. Here's my specs, here's my top output, here's what I mean by 'slow'" a good question?

@thesecretmaster It's a start.

certainly better, still feel it might be a bit broad

9:45 PM
OK. What else can I add that might narrow it?

Ah. FF. Have you tried disabling all add-ons? Using a new profile?

I'd add OS of course. And in top you'd see what's eating my CPU (firefox).

how many tabs have you got open?
also tabs

I can repro it with 1 tab. I already tried disabling all extensions.

@thesecretmaster What version? What URL?
Put all the above in the question.

9:49 PM
OK. Anything else?

Not that I can think of at the moment.

OK. Thanks for your help! I'll post a question when I can repro it again :)

run your AV before posting ;)

I run linux. Also, already ran it.

I've had problems with Firefox 55.0.2 64 bit chewing up CPU (on Windows). It seems to have started when I got rid of the last extension that was stopping multiprocess. I haven't yet narrowed down the cause - but I'm guessing a script (I have a lot of userscripts).

9:56 PM
Oh, literally updating to 55.0.2 from 55.0.1 as we speak :)

@thesecretmaster I can't remember when it started though. It could have been 55.0.1

I think it's happened less since I updated to 55.0.1. I may just swap browsers.

Are you running with multiprocess?

I think so. Let me check.
It certainly spawns multiple processes

Up to 6 (default) on windows, but that is configurable.

10:01 PM
More = faster? My processor can probably handle a couple more, but I'm no expert.

I think so. I haven't played with the numbers.

Yeah, I've got multiprocess enabled. What's the setting in about:config to allow it to use more processes?

dom.ipc.processCount

Haha, I just found it here. I was about to tell you :)
I'm trying it with 8. I'll let you know how it goes, if you'd like.

I'm on the default (4), which somehow means I get 6 FF processes ...

10:12 PM
Go into about config and look up dom.ipc.processCount. There are other processCount settings for other things.

@thesecretmaster I know :)

rolls eyes Super User mod knows all.

lol. let us know how you get on with 8 ;)

Alright, restarting FF. Hope I didn't break anything (or worse -- void my warranty)! See you all later.

10:23 PM
Feels faster already, but that could be my bias.

Appears a spam edit got approved accidentally
Revision 3, then it was "fixed" the link never appeared in the revision 2
Rolled it back after I determined the program was fake/shovelware/adware
superuser.com/users/637570/abhishek-kumar Is the user responsible for the edit, which editors approved, revision 2? I saw revision 3 in the queue but I believe I declined it based on the fact I couldn't verify the new link was correct

10:45 PM
In case anyone doubts me :-)

Should I feel bad that I feel nothing with regards to my childhood home being sold in order to allow my parents to move near me? They have lived there almost 40 years

Its just a building ;)

Hm...How do I represent, in a network diagram, if a device is conected into the WAN or LAN port of another device?

11:54 PM
roar
@ThatREDACTEDGuy WTF? The PB287Q is $400 here.
The 1080 Ti starts at $700.
By Ysmir, why are prices so outrageously inflated in Brazil?

Cool, huh? We even got a Wikipedia article for it!
Brazil cost (Portuguese: Custo Brasil [ˈkustu bɾɐˈziw]) refers to the increased operational costs associated with doing business in Brazil, making Brazilian goods and services more expensive compared to other countries. There are several factors that contribute to the extra cost, including: High levels of public deficits; The economy divided into cartels; Inefficiency of public services; Maintenance of high real interest rates; Exaggerated net interest spread of financial institutions (among the highest in the world); Excessive bureaucracy for importing and exporting, creating difficulties for...

Yeah.
