12:33 AM
hm. Threw together a super basic ticketing system off of google forms

@JourneymanGeek Makes sense. Don't reinvent the wheel, use the wagon someone else built. :D

I have a worse idea
create a private twitter account
connect ifttt to it
connect ticket's client system to it with ifttt's maker channel
our ticket system just dumps everything to a discord channel

Bob
12:51 AM
Ok. Contributing to Mozilla/Firefox is a relatively happy experience.
Even attempting to contribute to Google/Chromium is absolutely useless.

@GypsySpellweaver costs next to nothing, we already have a corporate google docs account. I'll prototype responses for a week then go to my boss

Bob
Looks like my reasons-to-hate-Chrome pile has grown...
If you don't happen to be sitting in a Google office? pffft, who cares about you?!

lol
@Avery I'd like to make my life easier, without spending any money ;p

Bob
@JourneymanGeek trac, gitlab (issues), ...

needs a server

Bob
12:57 AM
@JourneymanGeek eh, trac's very light... chuck it on that old desktop in the corner :P

HR came in and asked me what my timing is...
0_0
and I was like... no one told me
I was told to come in at 8, and apparently I should be working no more than 44 hours a week
.... that math makes no sense.
anyway, need to talk to the temp boss about that

@JourneymanGeek ifttt, twitter and discord are all free

Bob
@JourneymanGeek 44/w's fairly long hours for this kind of thing, no?

@Bob I'm working.... significantly longer at the moment

Bob
o.O
40h/w is 'standard' for most office jobs
at least here

1:03 AM
No one has any clue what my hours are. I was told to come in at 8. Most people start leaving 6.30
so that's when I leave
of course, a lot of people come in 10.30-11 soooooo
Was told to talk to my boss. Cause apparently HR's primary job is to get people to sign mission statements
also apparently round neck T shirts arn't appropriate for casual fridays...
....
I donno man, don't you people have a contract to process?

@JourneymanGeek If you can find out who really is the boss, that is. Some real paperwork really would be nice, wouldn't it?

Oh, he's the guy who interviewed me
yup
my current acting boss is his son

1:20 AM

@bwDraco heh, presumably!
The first step is really to get people used to the idea

@JourneymanGeek time to resign?

@Burgi and .... what job?
I have asked them about notice periods tho, and that the time delay is EXTREMLY frustrating

fair point

jokes about wanting to join the community management team aside, job hunting is frustrating and a string of short jobs and unemployment does not help
so unless I get another, firm offer, or I don't get my pay at the end of the month, I'll stick to this
They'll probably end up losing their edutrust cert if they're messing with me anyway

Bob
1:30 AM
O_O
30 emails... yay

(I mean, if anything remote I can do, or non remote in a team where I know people crops up, I'm applying ;p)
but ugh.

Bob
1:43 AM
ow. another 20 emails.
my watch is vibrating nonstop
emails faster than I can mark read
:S

Bob
@JourneymanGeek somewhat relevant reddit.com/r/singapore/comments/2vi5ht/…

2:03 AM
OMG. Sounds like where I work ;)

Bob
lol
almost thought that was you till I looked at the date

Bob
2:33 AM
WHY is your command prompt font Comic Sans MS?!?!?! — MD XF 2 days ago

2:44 AM
Mornin'!

Bob
google. pls.

1 hour later…
Bob
3:57 AM
:(

@Bob Would you expect MS to let you "in" without javascript and cookies? They have to watch you :D

@Bob ^^ Warning: highly addictive video series

Bob
@allquixotic I'll only get addicted if I remember to watch it :P
at work right now

@Bob Has google gone crazy?
wait...

Bob
4:12 AM
o.O

hm. This place has... 13 SSIDs 0_0

@JourneymanGeek That ought to keep the smart phones busy. Laptops too.

Updated CSS for mobile users! rahul.tech/gossipmonger/index.php
OMAHGOSH I ACTUALLY MANAGED CSS FOR ONCE

4:29 AM
Yes, and no. Needs a little more work.
Now all I need to do is figure out how to get it from the phone to here :/
On Samsung Galaxy J1

@GypsySpellweaver and things will interfere if you don't know what you're doing
With APs, less is more

@GypsySpellweaver huh

@JourneymanGeek Isn't it standard to have all the APs on one SSID?

hmm. Standard happens to other people

@Rahul2001 See how the boxes overflow their container boxes? In portrait mode it's only a little bit of the entry box. In landscape mode it's the scrolling area and the whole entry box

4:36 AM
@GypsySpellweaver Okay, that phone is small

user226528
Hello, superdudes!

user226528
Question: Would a post about installing Android for PC off-topic on Super User?

IMO no

@Rahul2001 On an iPad in landscape mod, still some overflow.
Portrait mode is ok, however

@GypsySpellweaver Looks like Google dev tools aren't very accurate

4:46 AM
Wow, just checked the size on that last one 2K+ wide! sure don't look that big to me.

hm

iPod 4th gen.

user226528
Pretty.

Weird, the ancient iPod has better resolution than the newer Galaxy J1.

Bob
this is one of the crazier things I've done
chrome in australia => nginx in france => guacamole (rdp client) => xrdp server hosted in lxd container => ssh to netherlands w/ X forwarding => ssh to another lxd container with X forwarding => firefox
I think video latency is somewhere between 10s and 100s :P

5:01 AM
@Bob lol
@Rahul2001 Well, now you have 3 mobile sizes to play with. Ping if you need testing again later.

@Bob got my contract. Slightly fishy ...
was waiting on the big boss allegedly.... he isn't here today

Bob
@JourneymanGeek ...fishy? o.O

@JourneymanGeek Does it meet MOM guidelines, at least?
BTW, I think MOM ought to be Ministry of Minions ;P

Bob
Ministry of Magic? :P

5:17 AM
@Bob Only if you're an house elf

Allegedly it was waiting on the CEO's signature...
He's not in
so it might have been signed before and no one checked ;p
@GypsySpellweaver ministry of manpower
this place isn't organised enough for me to be anyone's minion

@JourneymanGeek Just at the whim of other minions finding lost forms.

5:30 AM
that assumes there's an evil mastermind somewhere

5:57 AM
hmm
can win10 burn iso's natively?

user226528
@djsmiley2k Yes.

user226528
Starting with Windows 7, this feature has been present.

woo

user226528
Starting with Windows 8, it can mount them.

@Nick "don't let someone intrude into your space" maybe it's just me but that sounds weird. (though it is correct.)

user226528
6:00 AM
@satibel It is an awkward thing to say, but its awkwardness is outweighed by necessity when someone does the even-more-awkward act of doing it.

woo my chrome history is corrupt

user226528
Shame. Histories are useful things. And now you have to clear it.

@djsmiley2k dammit cthulu, I said don't touch the chrome history, bad cthulu!

user226528
Been there.

6:07 AM
@satibel hehe
@FleetCommand nah it's still there
chrome updated, and upon restarting it say the file was file corrupt
cept my history still there, shrug

I had my android phone say my memory is corrupt and I need to reset the phone.
I then charged the phone out of the low energy mode and it worked.

weird!

user226528
@djsmiley2k Oh, great! :) Now, you don't have to pretend you are permanently stuck in Porn Mode Private Browsing Mode.

:D
concidering I'm at work, this is a good thing ;D

I actually use it for a lot of stuff, and I miss opera's private tabs.

user226528
6:14 AM
Those private tabs were death traps negligence traps.

user226528
Always a private window

user226528
Strong? I don't think it can withstand a jackhammer.

user226528
But it is a good laptop. Six generation Core-i7...

6:26 AM
So anyone hit by the latest in malware/

No

user226528
I am. A couple of AV alerts.

:O
from my view (which is of a number of clients, but not very deep) it hasn't hit anywhere yet

user226528
I am proud of my security, you know. Home security, not workplaces.

ah yus
well, I have backups
yus yus

user226528
6:31 AM
You remind me of a guy who kept using the word Gurul. Took me a while to figure out he means "girl".

user226528
I have backups, antivirus (just for the record; nothing to brag about), personal firewall and sandbox. I run a tight ship.

i backup my wifes laptop to my linux server
which then pushes to the cloud

user226528
I don't trust cloud.

Actually planning to reinstall win10 on her laptop at some point, but I need to find out how to get the key to do so :/
@FleetCommand hense why it goes via my server
And I don't really have any otehr way of doing off site backups

@FleetCommand most private tabs I used were of the type "translate potato" or "java how to do stuff".
no problem here AFAIK
though security is really weak.
meanwhile me:
test root # export PS1="👻 >"
👻 >

6:40 AM
hmmmmm
my external hdd not showing up at work
i've not used it in like a year
hope it's not deded

I now have a ghost in the shell.

I have a severe lack of disk management on this machine xD
hmmm
i think it's formatted as ext4 or something
s and so not showing up under my computer, as I can see the properties for it
sigh, can't even run diagnostics to format it lol

6:57 AM
@FleetCommand Would you prefer Macbook Pro over it?

Bob
> The two were content for a time, but her brother became restless and went on a rampage, destroying Amaterasu's rice fields, hurling a flayed pony at her loom, and killing one of her attendants in a fit of rage. Amaterasu, who was in fury and grief, hid inside the Ama-no-Iwato ("heavenly rock cave"), thus effectively hiding the sun for a long period of time.
wat.

Religion?

Bob
@djsmiley2k Japanese mythology

Bob
But that's some rampage... "hurling a flayed pony at her loom"
O_O

7:01 AM
:D
this is the SUN we are talking about
'The sun - capable of hurling flayed ponys'

Bob
@djsmiley2k ...other way around. other guy hurled flayed ponies at the sun

7:25 AM
:O
ok that's impressive

7:39 AM
if you need a tough laptop either take one from 1990 or a (semi) rugged notebook e.g. dell latitude rugged, panasonic toughbook/toughpad.
for the lenovo, the T460 isn't listed as rugged, but the T450 and E460 are.
@Bob that's Susanoo, right?

and dear lord it begins...

morning
so... why is this new ransomware any different to previous versions?
or is it more a case that the news readers are bored with talking about elections?

It's not
exactly
s/talking/reading
:D

Bob
@satibel the brother? yea
@Burgi it has a secondary spread via SMB bug

lets see if my installing updates on a whim 2 weeks ago has actually patched us...

7:48 AM
it was patched march 2017
so maybe/hopefully then @Burgi

@Rahul2001 blame me for what?

@Burgi from what I heard, not much except the scale.

the scale isn't perticularly large either
200k pc's, 20k GBP made in bitcoin
almost like someone was trying to make a point

kinda like shoplifters vs national/world bank robbing.

so many obvious mistakes and stuff

7:54 AM
@djsmiley2k "hey guys, junk XP and make backups"? :p

yeah kinda
stop having publically accessible shares

@djsmiley2k have you checked?
@JourneymanGeek thats the back up plan if the WD40 on the rails at the back doesn't work

@Burgi I don't wanna be self employed
so no :D
dear lord
few clients have 'locked down IT systems'
now everything is broken, meaning previously, only the security was broken ;D

here in france, if you are freelance you almost need to be self employed.

8:17 AM
Western society is turning into consumption-based society that very Chinese hate: theonion.com/article/…
@satibel The problem with being self-employed freelancer is a competition on a worldwide scale.

@Boris_yo you realise that the onion is a satire site, right?

@djsmiley2k I didn't know that. Does it mean that stories are manufactured?

yus
they are 'joke' stories

o.0
There is some true to that satire story though.

ffs the directors are asking for proof that our servers are patched

8:32 AM
@Burgi show them the windows updates installed.

@Boris_yo That's what makes it satire

@Rahul2001 rahul.tech and rahul.tech/admin just change the font XD
though anything else than admin gives the hompage font.

> oh, and my girlfriend, I suppose.
Nice one ;D

so a windows 10 machine
thinks it's on the domain but lost it's trust

nvm, just between rahul.tech/asdf and rahul.tech/asdf/

8:41 AM
so the user can't login, is there anyway I can get the IP address from the login screen? :/
It doesn't seem to respond to ping either (thanks windows firewall!)

"If you're looking at this, you're either a bot or a geek.
In either case, you're probably better than regular human beings.
Why don't you hit me up on email, and we'll be friends?

Tip: start the subject line with "FRND:" to be prioritised.

Alternatively, drop by on gossipmonger with parameters
'supergeekz' & 'rainbowcookie'."
hum

lol

9:05 AM
also @Rahul2001 good job on sanitizing your inputs, but you truncate the username at 20 chars while the server only supports 19 and room name at 30 while only 29 is supported.

9:18 AM
@satibel oh really? I'll fix it once I get home...
@satibel wha... That's weird.

@Rahul2001 see the next message, I was fooled by autocomplete, it's the main page font for rahul.tech/asdf but another one for rahul.tech/asdf/ .

9:36 AM
@Rahul2001 Too bad the chat doesn't have a function to ding when a new message is posted. Kept it open, and missed another entry by ¾ of an hour.

@Rahul2001 GAH! you need to have your styles in a separate file
you are also missing<ul> tags
i am confused as to why you are using <pre> tags too

@GypsySpellweaver it would ding a lot

True, if used much. Not the one I have open now though. Or maybe a function to turn it on when window/tab looses focus.

@satibel its in foreign

9:48 AM
@Burgi PRE IS COOL OK?

not the way you are using it, it isn't

@satibel ah,

@Burgi Lol, I was in a hurry when I made it, I'll make the code valid later.

but <div> is semantic and uses the same number of characters

@Burgi translation : love is in the <pre> (meadow)

9:51 AM
o.O

the original title is "farmer wants wife".

"and all the sheep said no"

@GypsySpellweaver I could possibly cook up a desktop notification script if you want...

Not that I'm gonna use it much, except for your testing phase. I use 6 desktops across two monitors, and multiple projects active. Sometimes what is mostly inactive suddenly gets active and I don't notice it.
In here, I can set it to ping for @ mentions or anytime. When it goes dead, I set it to anytime and then ignore it. When it get busy, but don't involve me, I set it to @ mention, and skim from time to time.

Cool.

9:59 AM
@Rahul2001 While you're doing code clean-up and moving CSS to its own file, catch that inline style on your name too. For the "home" page.

@GypsySpellweaver ah, yeah...

Here's a general question: In HTML 5 it's legal to not close <li> if it's immediately followed by another <li> of the closing </ul> or </ol>. Legal yes, good form? (Y/N)?

terrible form

@GypsySpellweaver it's never good form
specially if @Burgi is trying to parse it with a regex :P

I know I don't like it. Then again I still have the habit of typing <br />, so I not up to speed on lots of the new stuff
he comes

10:11 AM
<br> is fine
tbh a lot of IDEs auto close the matching tags for you

I know it is, now, just a hold over from when I was doing XHTML.

<br> never had a close tag.

@GypsySpellweaver I used to type <be /> till yesterday, when I replaced all of it in my code with <be>
@djsmiley2k does in strict XHTML iirc

All the unpaired tags where supposed to be closed in XHTML with the space/>. br, hr, img, link, meta, etc...

Yep.

10:15 AM
<br /> <hr /> <img src='...' />

I still do it.

@Rahul2001 :O

I gather, not knowing for sure, that it's actually wrong in HTML 5?

src?!
yeah I feel tht W3C issued something saying stop doing it
STAAAP

Bob
10:19 AM
@GypsySpellweaver depends. if it's actually supposed to be a void element, it's useless. If it's supposed to have a proper closing tag, then it's wrong.
<img /> is pointless but acceptable
<div /> is wrong
(because they effectively become <img> and <div>... and the latter needs an actual closing tag)
@GypsySpellweaver XHTML is deprecated

@Bob Yes, HTML 5, with a much simpler doctype, is now the standard.

Bob
Hm. Not officially deprecated, but basically ignored these days.
I remember its original use-case was for very simple devices (phones) where a proper XML parser was easier (more efficient)

@GypsySpellweaver ah yes I know about that one

Bob
But these days you can chuck an actual HTML parser onto just about any device, including low-end

I mean an actual closing tag,

Bob
10:22 AM
@GypsySpellweaver I don't think I've ever typed an HTML4 or XHTML doctype.
It's always been a case of copy-paste :P

I used to keep all the doctypes in boilerplate because they were so horrendous.

Bob
Ya, templates if you have 'em. Google if you don't.

HTML5 made me sooo Happy :D ^\o/^

Bob
lol

Time for me to knock off for a bit. Enjoy.

10:27 AM
@DavidPostill first' new latop with this image wooo

@Bob github.com/zigwart/PIP-Arduino-Web-Browser well, it runs on arduino so yeah...

Bob
> Occationally when the browser crashes during a render, the HOME.HTM can get corrupted. Just copy the file in the enclosing folder back onto the SD card.
> Currently, URLs over 90 characters in size are truncated. This will undoubtably break them, or results in 404 errors. Which aren't handled well yet.

Oo
@Bob what.... Is this?

Bob
3 mins ago, by satibel
@Bob https://github.com/zigwart/PIP-Arduino-Web-Browser well, it runs on arduino so yeah...

eh, a web browser that takes about 10kb, what did you expect?
well, these guys made a 3d game that takes only about 10 times the size. youtube.com/watch?v=2NBG-sKFaB0

10:40 AM
Ah

Now if only you could procedurally generate a browser

kkrieger is procedurally generated

this guy made a boot floppy that can send arp requests in less than 512 bytes. forum.osdev.org/viewtopic.php?p=170192#p170192

11:04 AM
@Rahul2001 what on earth is a <be> tag?

@Burgi br
goddamn autocorrect

ah! you made me google it ;)

@satibel Font issue fixed!
@satibel Ah, I had strlen($var) < 30 in code, my bad

11:25 AM
anyone interested in a junior linux sysadmin job?

@Burgi me h

@Burgi Is it at my work place?
:D

its 30k and in manchester

we looking for Junior errr Network Analyst.
30k is nice for junior position
I don't know if I should think about networking again, or stick to sysadmin
I'm just not sure there's enough interesting stuff in networking :/

http://chat.stackexchange.com/transcript/message/37401536#37401536
I could do it :p
though manchester is a bit far.

11:32 AM
you could move here...
shrug

I could, though I still have a month or 2 of work, and I plan on taking my time to find a new job/make my own business.

11:48 AM
in france you have an 1 day worked : 1 day payed Unemployment allowance, so I'd have about 10 months of sponsored lazyness :p hum "job searching"

infact 30k is really nice
how expensive is manchester?

stackoverflow.com/company/work-here/692943/… this dosen't look too bad if you're the support-ish sort and didn't want to be a groundpounder...

@djsmiley2k reasonable
roughly £3.50 for an average pint

I love how people talk about cost of living in terms of pints.

lol

12:38 PM
@GypsySpellweaver "has left the chat session" notification added back :)

Bob
.

This is very exciting news. 10 GbE and 5 GbE NICs that consumers can actually afford \o/

I'd rather know the price of a baguette :p
though jokes aside, I use kebab for reference.
so what's the price of a kebab in manchester?

12:56 PM
fyi if you have a windows phone (lol), MS are killing them off

Bob
@bwDraco eh... it's a decent start but it'll still be at least half a decade before any of the necessary equipment (switches, maybe routers) get even near the affordable range

@Bob Can you not be so negative?
You're always so negative on new product launches...

Bob
Probably because a lot of new product launches disappear quietly into the night a few months later.
