It goes to /home/canadianluke/backups for me, working correctly

windows backups does?

Remove the printable = no option, that's default

the 'system image' backup?

Yea, Windows Backup. From my Windows 7 laptop
I haven't tried with my new one, one moment

7:06 PM
imma win10
thign is, it worked for the other win10 laptop :@/

It's backing up right now for me!
Are you using the new "PC Settings' app, or the "Backup and Restore (Windows 7)" control panel applet?

old one
the new one doesn't make a restorable image, does it?
tho thinking about all this, i don't think it actually matters xD

I'm not sure. The "new one" only lets me go to external hard drives

yeah exactly :/
and it only backs up copies of user files from what I understand
tho..... none of this mtters

Hopefully not. If you have Samba, setup an Active Directory, use Group Policy for your "settings", then backup your files

7:10 PM
i can just reinstall

No, my backup is creating the System Image

lol how do you do a AD without windows, can you ujust do it on samba?
I've never actually tried...

Yea man!

user226528
So, you guys are using Windows Backup? Any backup app that Microsoft develops, I mark as "toxic" in my book.

I'm the AD expert at my workplace, and on Thursday, just did a training lesson on it

7:12 PM
nice

@FleetCommand Agreed; but if you are restoring to the same hardware, it's perfect!

user226528
Been there

@CanadianLuke oh yeah, you're the schools guy, right>?

If you want to restore to another system or other hardware, I'd recommend third party that offers bare-metal restore
@djsmiley2k I am, yea

nod nod

I used to love Fiddler. Now, I just hate it.

But seriously, I taught the other admins to use Group Policy last week in order to offer a consistent environment - including a crap-ton of settings we usually set for the user before imaging - and then instruct the users to save to the network drives

So once it's deployed everywhere, the staff can move from computer to computer, taking their files with them (via network), and get that site's settings
If you're doing it personally (i.e. at a home), create a group policy object with YOUR preferences and choices, then it works on any Windows system you join to the domain

nice

If you want to go a step further, and your network is setup nicely, you can even redirect the user profile folders to point to the Samba server - Documents, Downloads, Music, AppData, etc
Then any computer the log in on will have all of that as well! Appearing local

7:16 PM
nod, some of our clients have that
at work we just have file syncing

Great for certain scenarios....
I'd prefer keeping the files on the network for stationary computers

nod

Laptops? They got network drives to connect to, and they can save to their profiles on the device itself
It's up to them to move it to the network server when they're in the building

see that's when i like file syncing in windows
laptops!
because i don't trust users ;D

Problem is, we got thousands of users. If they log off, then the syncing would take a very long time
We put the responsibility on the users

7:20 PM
if they 'log off' ??

Start-> Log off
Using "Offline Files", it starts syncing at that point. So, because of complaints on speed, we turned that off

huh mine syncs while i'm using it...

Nice... To your file server? Or to a cloud of some sort?

file servr
using windows offline files...

Well, it's been disabled since before I started here, so it's possible MS improved it then

Some notes on the costs of developing games for 4K (hint: it's not just the assets that are expensive to make): usgamer.net/articles/xbox-one-ps4-pro-developers-ready-for-4K

yey
win10 knows i have a touchpad again \o/

1 hour later…
8:40 PM
@bwDraco I see not much to suggest that it's a cost raising issue
once again, advertising is the issue

8:56 PM
So... was thinking about replacing my USB 3.0 drive enclosure (with Samsung SSD inside) with this:
Short cable is a disappointment, though. Something like this with a longer cable?
Preferably around 3 ft long, no need for an extra-long cable.

@bwDraco for what usecase?

General data transfers, portable storage.

because.... drive hanging off the end of a cable is asking to get accidently disconnected, bent.. .etc

It's not being used for permanent connectivity.

9:08 PM
The SATA connector is pretty durable FWIW.

Well... regarding durability, the original spec is very poor (just 50 mating cycles!) but modern connectors are good for several hundred cycles.
At least we're talking about one-piece data+power connectors, not separate power and data; the single connectors are typically designed for repeated insertion and removal and are nowhere near as flimsy as the separate cables used for internal connectivity.
(these connectors are meant for use in applications like hot-swap bays and stuff where frequent insertion and removal can be expected)
For reference, the usual USB Type-A connector has a design lifespan of 1,500 mating cycles.
Ouch.

9:24 PM
that takes some doing

Again, one-piece, combined power and data connectors should not fail anywhere near as easily.

@bwDraco Guy at work managed that once... we were surprised.
"I can't plug this SATA cable into my new drive..."

lol

so we looked at the connector, then the old drive
"oh"

!!/oh

lol

Bob
10:16 PM
huh
we have amazon here now
that was a really soft launch

10:36 PM
@Bob Is this new?
:-o

Bob
@FMLCat as of last night/this morning
well, it's been expected for months
and everyone thought last week
but now it's actually active and really quiet

@Bob What are the delivery options like?

welp
got home and immediately fell asleep

@djsmiley2k startec's stuff is typically strange and pricy

Bob
11:21 PM
@FMLCat Free standard >$49, $6 expedited (2-day?), $10 priority (next-day)
But there's not many Amazon-fulfilled things yet
> Starting in Windows Insiders Build 17046, WSL supports background tasks (including daemons).
:O

11:38 PM
@JourneymanGeek I've only ever got star Tec stuff when no one else produced it

@Bob How about Prime? Is there flat rate free next-day like they have here?

Bob
11:56 PM
@FMLCat No, apparently Prime delivery is expected ~ mid next year and they're planning 2-hour after that
Though they do have Saturday delivery, which is nice
