@BenN So if I disabled my WU, MSE doesnt even update its definitions?!

Not automatically; it will occasionally pop up a little notification that your definitions are out of date
You can click that to have it update

oh man... why do you do this microsoft?
MSE is not part of the OS, you must make it a choice whether it auto updates itself

I too was very -_- when I learned about that arrangement

Well oh well, I'm going to go invoke functions from arbitrary dlls using rundll64 now, bye everyone.

Nooooo

Triggered ♥ :)

Heh, I was about to link you to that, but you apparently know about it ;)

Well idk about you but I like corrupting my stack.

@CausingUnderflowsEverywhere corruping? stack?

Q: Under what circumstances can I use rundll32 to invoke a function in a DLL?

Ben NI'd like to invoke the functionality found in various Windows DLLs from the command line. It looks like the rundll32 utility will do what I need - it takes a DLL name and a function name, and runs that function with parameters. I certainly hope there won't be any problems with that. What functio...

You miss one question, you die.

yeah yesterday I was looking at Ben's profile and noticed hmmm 10 million answers and 8 questions, cool let's see what questions he asked, they are probably pretty interesting! Oh yeah I certainly hope there won't be any problems. There certainly will be problems.

@oldmud0 Game Over!

Really great format @BenN loved it and informative too. I like how much I learned and even more about how windows has to fix corrupted stacks when people compile code with errors by type casting hehe

@CausingUnderflowsEverywhere I triggered Game Over by purpose.
by killing Mario with a goomba

@Edity you need to download zsnes and play smw

damn goomba and mario dont mix
@CausingUnderflowsEverywhere I played kirby with zsnes

10:50 PM
Yes I read Raymond's blog! thanks Ben :)
@edit you need to play kirby with pj64

it works with nsnes
i played super star

@oldmud0 Are all the questions multiple-choice (or otherwise pass/fail), or do they have multiple parts?

They're multiple guess. At least there's no rule against having the notes in front of me

Ah, that helps some
What's this test for?

It's TestOut which is basically an online textbook that prepares you for several IT exams. My summer program paid for this to prepare me for the CompTIA Security+ exam

Ben you look very friendly from your picture is that true?

Exciting! Fortunately, you don't have to get every question right on the real Sec+ exam to pass

10:56 PM
The summer program's instructor assigns sections, looks at the grade at the first attempt for each of the sections' questions, and records it in the gradebook

@CausingUnderflowsEverywhere I like to think I'm a friendly person ;)

Q: Windows 10 Shows Orange Screen with White Vertical Lines on boot

SimplyInkOrange Screen (See picture below) appears on boot after Dell loading screen. Dell Inspiron 580 w dual monitors Dell Bios is latest version (A07) Nvidia GeForce 310 (Driver version 341.95 - latest) BitLocker enabled with no TPM Hyper-V enabled Surprisingly, I can key in my BitLocker password a...

Hmm, I confess I know very little about hardware; it's definitely a driver issue (as shown by the error), though I don't know any more

hmmmmmmm let me test your hardware skills
what's the difference between a .NET application of 352KB running on a 6600U vs a 6700HQ

The 6700HQ has a smidge more single-core performance, but also double the cores. I would say that a .NET program would gain more noticeable speedups from that hardware upgrade than native apps
(considering that it has a GC thread and whatnot)

11:10 PM
okay you lost me at gamecube thread

Heh, "garbage collector" - it's the routine that deallocates unused objects
Relevant (and long) MS article: msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ee787088.aspx

the real difference how ever is, that the application will be saving the world running on a 6600U while on the 6700HQ it will be speeding up the melting of the polar ice caps as the 6700HQ draws more electricity which is produced by burning coal.
I think you need to take a hardware course to refine your hardware knowledge

I see
Also, write your representative and tell them to support nuclear energy
:P

in school I learned it's bad because north america pays Africa to store its waste, but apparantly they've been using safer ways now Im not sure.

Anyway, the problem that person is having is probably that the display driver is on the partition that's BitLocker-encrypted
If I was to bounty-hunt that question, I would ask for a screenshot of Disk Management

11:14 PM
you think it can't decrypt the driver? (sorry idk what bitlocker does really I always considered it as bloatware)

BitLocker is actually really awesome in that your entire OS volume is encrypted

so does programming in .NET save time because you dont have to worry about free ing your own memory and stuffs?

And my guess is that the display driver's files aren't accessible from the BitLocker boot partition
Personally, I use .NET because of that memory convenience, and because of its nice standard library

hmm does bitlocker help protect against malware? or does a file request get decrypted before it's thrown to an application?

BitLocker does nothing once your system is booted; it just stops people who've stolen your hard disk from reading your data or tampering with your OS

11:17 PM
(I'm imagining that malware would be unable to infect an encrypted file, and if anything just corrupt it)
oh but what if the police gets your data does that help

Yes it does

Theoretically

haha blast
what if that 4096 bit RSA has a vulnerability that causes it to be cracked in 2.38 processor seconds

If you find that vulnerability, you get to talk at big conferences!

11:20 PM
taskhost.exe CPU time 140ms since boot up

@BenN Ha, that's all you care about?

what do I need to find it? calculus?

Fortunately, many very smart people have shown that RSA is solid, provided that it's used correctly
@oldmud0 Heh, no ;) It was something of a joke on how people sometimes say "if you find that, you get a Nobel prize"

@CausingUnderflowsEverywhere no, you will need a degree in microbiology to examine the living documents of cryptography

Oh, so it's like the Constitution now?
(Sorry, political jokes!)

11:22 PM
@BenN Yes but instead of being interpreted by a human judge, it's recompiled with a JIT.

@CausingUnderflowsEverywhere I'm afraid I haven't studied crypto enough to even describe what you need to study to poke at it

We need to make a low-level Constitution assembly language

YES MICROSOFT POST MORTEM JUST IN TIME SYMBOLIC DEBUGGER
ahh windows xp
Im kidding the just in time debugger is seperate from the MS PMSD

So that I can finally see in my senator's bills at the top: #include <constitution>

<thousands of reams of legalese blow by the screen>

11:26 PM
I am a very fair judge. I will examine this case very carefull---ACCESS VIOLATION AT 0xff087002 (hb_3261.lgl)

Ben what do I use to debug C sharp programs? are there symbolic debuggers

Visual Studio has a pretty good debugger built in

it's a server side program so it can have as many symbols present in the debug version as it likes

If you have a PDB file (which is autogenerated for things you write), you can debug any .NET program

okie dokie thanks
in an explorer.exe dump file I found uhhhhhh something explorer.PDB as a string

11:30 PM
Well, explorer.exe is a native process, so debugging it will be challenging, though you might be able to get symbols for it if you use MS's symbol server: msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/windows/desktop/…
VS has an assembly debugger though, if you're into that

I have a question related to GC.
"Free. The block of memory has no references to it and is available for allocation."
Can't I have a program that doesn't have any evident references to a resource, then at some point end up accessing the resource again

No. If an accessible object could conceivably access a resource (even if you don't have direct access), that resource isn't free

well what is a reference, what does it look like in assembly. is it just a call to a point in memory?
I'm into assembly but havent had a chance to study it yet :D

Well, .NET compiles down to MSIL/CIL

Bob
s/MSIL/CIL/

Some viruses are written in .NET, so sometimes "MSIL" will be mentioned alongside them

hmm I suppose GC languages, java, .NET, AS3 just dont have a possible way of deep down stuff then

C# has unsafe code, and you can P/Invoke into any native function

couldnt you say that assembly is unsafe code

But in general, you won't have to worry about pointers and stuff when writing in .NET
Which assembly?

11:37 PM
do assemblers check for possible problems like a high level language compiler would :o

Not really

yeah thats what I mean

You can do a few things with CIL that you can't with C# or VB.NET, but those things aren't usually useful

I've always been interested in pointers :D

morning

11:38 PM
morning journeyman

unsafe code allows you to use pointers, though you should almost never need it
Hi!

my new role model is @BenN ! :)
@BenN, @JourneymanGeek will explain your responsibilities to you.

@cat Really? I don't think anything has changed there for the last few months.

@Bob It's been not working for a few months
Or maybe weeks

Is it trying to do it in Bot Overflow?

Bob
Interesting.

cat
Anyway it stopped working a while ago
Can't remember when exactly
But definitely more than a month

Bob
11:47 PM
Gah.
Remind me to look into it some other time.
Anyway, re: unsafe code.

cat
First time I noticed was shortly after Google commands broke, but it could ahve happened before then

Bob
Generally should only need to use it when something external requires it.
Which pretty much boils down to annoying P/Invoke structs.
@cat He's slowly forgetting things! :P

cat
Aren't we all.
