The thrower started hitting the bats too much, so the king of the game told him to leave and brought out another thrower from thrower jail.

@Clearquestionwithexamples I'd have worded that 'duplicate of (link)

5:42 AM
Does community bump the same posts over and over???
It was already a duplicate superuser.com/questions/708753/… @JourneymanGeek

Yup. Community does.
Ahh. So its closed
So.... There's no need to do anything.

It still interferes with searching

On the contrary. We keep dupes for easier searching.

Has anyone used anything like NewRelic but FOSS?
Munin seems to be nice

If the title serves as alternative phrasing

5:50 AM
So... Yeah. If its closed, don't bother flagging.
@HackToHell alerts?
Old job used sensu.

@JourneymanGeek Yeah, general monitoring with alerts

Not too bad. Did a lot of stuff.

We used Kinbana and Logstash but it's not very good

I'm using uptimerobot but I doubt its foss

@JourneymanGeek Looks nice
@Clearquestionwithexamples None of the servers have HTTp servers on them

5:53 AM
You don't need http
What about deleting the answer on the dup and downvoting the question
webmasters.stackexchange.com/a/24309 @HackToHell you saw that?

@Clearquestionwithexamples Something like that on the server site on se

@HackToHell we also used logstah and kibana but that was for metrics
And, avengers swag acquired.

I flagged that when I first saw it because it looked like spam

ha the mod edited their comment. before it said "hairy solution" and didn't make sense

Iirc Anna's a dev. Used to be a cm.

@JourneymanGeek Yeah, I tried to add server stats into that
Didn't work very well

6:41 AM
@HackToHell yeah, and it broke lots.

2 hours later…
Bob
8:38 AM
@JourneymanGeek Can you use OneDrive on Win10 with a local account?

@Bob: no idea. Let me fire up artemis

Bob
@JourneymanGeek thanks
I know you can in 8, can't in 8.1
rumors that you can in 10
but no one really comes out and says it

(I'm still amused I can throw windows 10 onto a 2007 era laptop)
oh. k

Bob
?

task manager is reporting 0.0/0mb of memory
(in the performance tab)

8:45 AM
infinite memory!

(yeah, photo, screenshot tool was borked too)

Bob
o.O
Also,
> Then an idea came to me: why not use a CF-card as the boot drive, and use a small USB thumb drive as the primary storage medium? They are both solid-state, and theoretically should be faster than the HDD
!!no

Bob
I really hate the "solid state is faster!" myth
SSD manufacturers have really sold it well

@Bob: Did I say gratuitous?
Yes I did

8:49 AM
-1% memory
wat.

I doubt a CF card would be faster than... well a sata drive
@Bob: It works
It'll ask you to link an account
and you can unlink if need be

Bob
@JourneymanGeek awesome
...*still delaying win10 upgrade*

@Bob: This is probably the worst system I have functional
The fact that it runs at all is impressive
and its considerbly snappier than I remember 7 to be, or even a fresh XP install
Actually, I'm wondering how fast the SD card slot is compared to the hard drive

Bob
@JourneymanGeek unless it's UHS-I you're probably looking at some 15MB/s write, max

@Bob: Its probably an older reader too
I believe this is the first generation of thinkpad to come with a SD card slot
hm

Bob
9:01 AM
1MB/s? :P

Considering its a 160gb hdd
70-80 dollars locally would get me a sandisk ssd...
Not that I'm seriously considering that

Bob
Next thing you know you'll have OS/2 on it

>_>
I miiihgt have a better machine for that...
@Bob: ~ 13MB/sec on the SD card
its some random one
HDD is between 40 and 2
That's the HDD

9:18 AM
how old is that HDD?
I mean how long has it been in use
because that's a looot of jitter for a hdd

@Leathe: hm. Original disk for an R61
Its probably well over 5 years?

not too old, then
or well, if by well over 5 you mean from 5-10, then it is :P

Its a 2007 model
so around that age

kay

The model was vista era, but I opted for XP. Upgraded to 7, then 10.

9:22 AM
@Bob I'm delaying windows 10 upgrade as well, not that I really have a reason to :P

Oh, on this one? I just had the time, and its a spare box
I've gotten my stream, desktop and x220 upgraded already
Old desktop's next but the monitor on that is dead

I should probably upgrade and format
got a lot of stuff on my C: that I don't need

@Leathe: You can do a clean install out of a current install
I did that with 2 of my systems

yeah
is W10 smaller in size than W7 I wonder
I bought a too small SSD as a system drive
80GB isn't really enough anymore
or was it a 60GB...
can't even remember
Just really annoying to have only 1-2GB free space on that drive
should've moved my Appdata right away when I installed
but oh well. Time for lunch now

@Leathe: I can check, my installs are tiny
@Leathe: ~16gb used including the hibernation file and pagefile on a system with 2gb of ram
32gb storage

9:51 AM
windows 10 and windows 8.1 both can be made into smaller installs then Windows 7 ever could. Of course you have to remove some major features if you want that to happen but its an option. What I can't recall without research is if those installs can be made by the end user or if they were only offered by OEMs on 32GB based devices.

@Ramhound: Even stock, windows 10 is smaller than windows 8

Aye

the OEM adjustments on the smaller devices was doable by a poweruser, but was wierd.

But I specifically recall this being a new feature though that was introduced

You basically ended up up storing part of the OS in the recovery partition to save space.
Windows 10 dosen't need that at all.

9:56 AM
Indeed. I just saw the question.

Upgrading to windows 10 was pretty trivial. Went for a clean install, and that even redid the partiions for me.

Oh god those puns.

@JourneymanGeek Alright, thanks. I'll look up on that w10 installation when I get home
tbh that notification that keeps popping up all the time starts to get annoying

@Leathe: That typically never works right for me
I use the media creation tool for that

black mark? o.O

@JourneymanGeek: How do I demonstrate that I've learned to moderate calmly and fairly? I would hate to set a bad example for the community.

So here's the thing. I'm mad at you. I'm not going to consider suspending you till I'm not mad at you.
I guess one thing I need to do is to not make decisions in haste or in emotionally charged situations. This is what's been causing all these issues lately. I've been way too rash.

@DragonLord: In situations like this? Don't jump in. Flag it
its easier for us to deal with two people mad at each other than three.

Sigh. People are downvoting spam instead of flagging it.
@JourneymanGeek Currently -10 but not community deleted. How many spam flags does it need? I'm sure it't not 10 ...

@DavidPostill: There is no spam, only zuuuuul

It's already gone.

10:26 AM
@DavidPostill: was gone when I saw it
nuked the user too

6 flags is what's needed to delete a spam post.

@DragonLord And every flag also is a downvote. So 4 people downvoted instead of flagging ...

@DavidPostill: There's no way to track down who downvoted and to smack them on the nose with a rolled up newspaper.
(so @Ramhound @DragonLord if it happens, custom flag, and I'll deal with it)

As a result of my failure to do so, I have made several erroneous decisions while reviewing and moderating content on this site and set a poor example for the community to follow. I hereby apologize for doing so, and will take steps to ensure that I moderate calmly and patiently at all times.
To reaffirm this commitment:
8 hours ago, by DragonLord
Effective immediately, I'm going to be making major changes aimed at addressing self-control issues that have repeatedly cropped in this chat room. My focus will be on being a calm and stoic person at all times, never losing control of myself, so that I can always act in a constructive and controlled manner even under the difficult conditions. I will not let anything like this happen again.
I think a public apology is in order for this conduct. I should not be setting a bad example for the community to follow.
I'm a high-rep user and should never be doing this.

Hello folks
I see some people are concerned about my er... "grievance" with Ramhound

Heya @qasdfdsaq
@qasdfdsaq: quite.
I figured I'd keep an eye on it first, but... welll...
So, I've noticed you've commented a lot on ramhound's posts. It seems a wee bit agressive.
passive agressive? Maybe. Anyway, ramhound's a tiny bit uncomfortable about it.

Honestly, I go down the list of most recently active questions, and a few times he's posted comments on all of them. I don't follow him around to do it. But then again, he's previously commented on a lot of my posts (and deleted his comments shortly thereafter)

Yeah, that happens
and he comments more than he should!
(I tell him post to post answers)
Anyway, as long as you're aware that people think is the case, its cool.
I don't see the need to jump down anyone's throat about this, personally

In the case you're referring to though, I find it's black and white: he says there's no migration, I know there is. I try to keep things non personal and non-emotional, but I don't always have time to post a full answer at the time.
Yeah I probably should keep my mouth shut more often.
Unfortunately I'm basically the archetype of this person: powersthatbeat.files.wordpress.com/2012/07/photo.jpg

Oh, I've cleaned up another thread
but well...
I'm hitting 30/40 flags a day some days so sorry but I can't remember where that was

10:55 AM
Well, sorry for causing the trouble. I'll try to reign it in a bit.

@JourneymanGeek: I've issued a public apology for my tendency to lose my temper and to make decisions on emotion instead of keeping a cool head and making decisions calmly, patiently, and fairly as a good moderator would. I've learned my lesson. This will never happen again.

@qasdfdsaq: actually, I consider it a completely minor issue
I'd probably would have ended up sending you both a mod message (without a suspension) if I felt a bucket of cold water was needed.

Someone else already has >_>

Oh?
I mean a proper mod message
Oh see?

I got a mod message from Mokubai 5 days ago, for "rudeness". It's an issue for me as I'm on the autistic spectrum and need to re-learn what "rude" is once in a while. It might be minor for most people but I have to work harder at it if you know what I mean

10:58 AM
System works as designed!
>_>
No worries

@qasdfdsaq I have a similar issue myself which has been causing issues of a much greater magnitude. As a high-rep user, this is a bad example to set. I'm sorry I threatened you with a suspension in a few earlier comments.

You threatened me with suspension? :( I actually didn't notice

@qasdfdsaq The comments were removed by a moderator.

Ah. See, system works as designed! :-P

@qasdfdsaq yeah, and I yelled at him for it.
(A mod will NEVER threaten to suspend you. We'll explain why we did ;p)

11:02 AM
For context, see the transcript starting here; this led to a lot of drama and ultimately an official warning.
I wound up issuing a public apology for this. A good moderator will never act on emotion. I won't let myself do the same again.

@DragonLord I had a look at your profile earlier and the fact you had ""I take the accuracy and correctness of my contributions very seriously." in your profile already put you above most people in my books.

@DragonLord As I say, I never saw it originally to be honest, so no need to apologise to me.

Purchasing on Steam and paying via PayPal no longer requires any confirmation. This is kind of confusing. At first I thought I was getting free games :P

11:15 AM
@DragonLord There's really not need for this kind of public display. If you want to adjust your behavior, just do it.

Yeah, that, but I've said this a few times
Actions speak louder than words

Alright, let's get started.
Due to the nature of the changes in question, I may not be able to demonstrate them in an obvious or visible fashion immediately. I'm always open to feedback; please let me know if I'm doing things wrong.
Back to the review queues.

@OliverSalzburg Do you mean like basic paypal confirmation or confirmation through steam to make sure whose paypal you're using?

@Leathe: steam used to kick you into a paypal page and back.

ah

11:33 AM
Exactly. It no longer does that
I click "Purchase", then the button changes to "Working" and then I get sent to the "Thanks for your purchase" page and I have a payment receipt from PayPal in my inbox
It just doesn't seem right :P

Eh. Quite a few Paypal sites have implemented "single-sign-on" integration like that.
Amazon I find funnier, you don't need to type your password to purchase items but you do need to in order to cancel or return items.

@qasdfdsaq: Amazon dosen't support cic numbers
which means I can't buy stuff from them with my debit card

@JourneymanGeek What's a CIC number again?

@qasdfdsaq: the 3 digit number at the back of your card for visa cards
mastercard does the same I think
unless I completely misremembered the name...

@JourneymanGeek Ah. We seem to call them CVC codes here.

11:38 AM
@qasdfdsaq: I misremembered the name.

And by CVC code I mean RAS Syndrome.

A card security code (CSC), (also called card verification data, card verification number, card verification value, card verification value code, card verification code, verification code (V-code or V code), card code verification, or signature panel code (SPC) are different terms for a security feature for "card not present" payment card transactions instituted to reduce the incidence of credit card fraud. The CSC is in addition to the bank card number which is embossed or printed on the card. The CSC is used as a security feature, in situations where a PIN cannot be used. The PIN is not printed...
redundant acronym syndrome syndrome? ;p

Yeah. My cards all have CVCs but still work on Amazon without them...
I guess some card vendors are more strict?

My bank won't authorise payments on debit cards without em
and I didn't make enough for a credit card on my last job

Credit card laws are awfully lax here. They used to basically drown students with no income with credit cards.

11:41 AM
@qasdfdsaq I'm not really sure where the sign-on happened though :P

@OliverSalzburg Presumably, when you linked your Steam account to your Paypal account

And I also don't recall ever giving Steam any kind of PayPal permission/access to just be able to automatically make transactions

Much like Ebay doesn't require you to sign in to Paypal to complete a purchase once you've "saved" your acount.

I wonder where I can administer that. It seems like I would find a reference to Steam somewhere in my PayPal account
I see a reference to eBay, but not to Steam

So I just tried it out, adding a Paypal payment to my steam account. On the add payment method page, there's a pre-ticked box: "Save my payment information so checkout is easy next time".
On the Paypal payment page, after I log in to Paypal: "By clicking the 'Agree and Continue' button, you agree and consent to use PayPal for future payments to WWW.Steampowered.com and that these payments will be made in accordance with the terms of the User Agreement applicable to "pre-approved payments". Payments will be made with your default payment source unless you select a preferred payment source."

Yeah, but it has been like that for ages. Not having to confirm the purchase is new

Well, it seems you gave them permission "for ages", they just didn't use it :-P

@grawity A-ha!
@qasdfdsaq Possibly

It's under "Profile → My money → My preapproved payments", at least on this ancient layout I'm still stuck with

@grawity I'm constantly switching between the old and the new layout, depending on which links I click :D

11:50 AM
So...
its just like windows 10?

Lol

Also, that "preapproved payments" list is fucking scary :P

I only have Godaddy and Ebay on mine. Not sure why Godaddy is there, I paid by credit card directly.

Linden Research Inc. is in there...

I'm guessing you use Paypal on more sites than me. I prefer not to where possible.

11:52 AM
@qasdfdsaq: I shouldn't judge, but you need a less evil domain registar.

Godaddy are evil? Explain?

@qasdfdsaq: amongst other things, they supported SOPA

Oh. Hmm...
My defence to that is I don't remember why I chose them but it was before SOPA existed

No worries ;p
As long as you're aware.

My other domains are registered elsewhere though, so it's not as if I have anything like brand loyalty. Maybe worth a change.

11:55 AM
I currently use namecheap

is-scotland-an-independent-country-yet.uk probably gets more hits these days than qasdfdsaq.com
Yeah, heard of them but the name just sounds... cheap!
Hurrdurr.

am thinking of using them for my mail stuff as well
since I'm kinda not really in the mood to beat postfix into working, and at least one of my leads seems to think my resume would be better with one in some circles
@qasdfdsaq: scottish?

10 hours ago, by Journeyman Geek
however choosing not to act at the heat of the moment is good
Please pin this.

@qasdfdsaq I prefer to use PayPal over giving sites my CC info. And usually all other payment options aren't instant. But I'll definitely be more attentive in the future ;P

I need a reminder not to do this again. I can't risk getting myself suspended.

11:57 AM
@JourneymanGeek Sorta. British, live in Scotland.

@DragonLord Then write it on a sticky note and attach it to your screen

@DragonLord: eyelid tattos are good,
@qasdfdsaq: ahh. I was temporarily bristolian. Had a friend who lived in scotland tho.

@OliverSalzburg I prefer the other way round. Here, legally, there's joint liability and better protection if you purchase on a credit card.
Paypal has historically wrangled their way out of credit card disputes by saying "The product you purchased from us was a money transfer service. We transferred your money to the other party, therefore fulfilled our obligations."

@qasdfdsaq We have liability limits on credit card fraud as long as you report incidents promptly.

12:00 PM
I'm not referring to fraud but seller non-performance. Like you buy something, they don't deliver.
I believe Paypal's legal stance has softened recently, but I prefer my rights being concrete as per the consumer credit act.
(It's basically a lot easier to sue over faulty products if Paypal isn't involved)

So much to change...
Any ideas for practice?

@qasdfdsaq: I essentially stick to retailers I trust so... I've not had that happen so far

@DragonLord Yes. Don't respond to anything immediately if you are feeling stressed/worried/hot headed. Write things down but don't send them. When you feel calmer some time later, reread what you wrote. Change it as necessary. Then and only then send it.

@JourneymanGeek I trust no-one.

@qasdfdsaq well, essentially ;p
(I do take the rare risk, but I do some homework first)

12:06 PM
@DragonLord Take regular breaks. Learn to meditate and do so during those breaks.

Or perhaps I only trust people I can sue. Oh god I'm becoming Americanized.

Just because you have received a notification/email/text message doesn't mean you have to respond immediately. Our current internet/smartphone always on technology is partly to blame for this. In the good old days of old fashioned letters through the post we had more time to communicate in a more thoughful manner.

I'm changing the way I behave and handle my emotions to prevent incidents of this sort from happening again. tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/TheStoic

12:11 PM
Amusingly...
I need to get my paws on a windows 8 box
Guess who has none left?

@DavidPostill, thanks for the advice.
To all those who were here during this incident, I owe you a really big debt. My behavior has been a life-long issue for me and I can't thank you enough for your help.

@DragonLord Don't bottle up your emotions (some believe that can cause physical illness). Instead learn to express them in a safe way. Emotion can be thought of as E-Motion or Energy in Motion. When energy gets stuck bad things happen.
If you feel anger, express it by shouting (preferably somewhere where you will not disturb everyone else) or by otherwise dissipating it (buy a punch bag and hit it as hard as you can until you are exhausted/punch a soft pillow is an alternative).
If you feel sadness allow yourself to cry. Hug yourself.

@DavidPostill Emotional stability is and will always be one of my major goals. For those times where letting it out not avoidable, I'll be sure to do it safely.
Don't get me wrong. In the few times I've managed to get myself to be stoic, the difference was like night and day.

Identify the emotion you’re feeling. Identifying a specific emotion can be more difficult than you think. If you are struggling, start with the four basic categories: anxiety, sadness, anger, or happiness. **By simply identifying exactly what you’re feeling, you can begin taking the power away from the emotion as you work through what’s causing it.** Though your feelings may vary in intensity, most fall into one of these broad categories.

Anxiety often takes the shape of “what if” questions. What if they don’t like me? What if I’m not accepted? Etc.

Being stoic all the time would be a gamechanger for me.
Jun 2 at 23:08, by DragonLord
@allquixotic I'm starting a massive personal project to overhaul my personal conduct and personality, just as if I was rewriting a major software application. It is my intention that the "DragonLord" you'll see a few months from now will be an entirely different person than the "DragonLord" you're seeing today.
The Stanford marshmallow experiment was a series of studies on delayed gratification in the late 1960s and early 1970s led by psychologist Walter Mischel, then a professor at Stanford University. In these studies, a child was offered a choice between one small reward provided immediately or two small rewards if they waited for a short period, approximately 15 minutes, during which the tester left the room and then returned. (The reward was sometimes a marshmallow, but often a cookie or a pretzel.) In follow-up studies, the researchers found that children who were able to wait longer for the preferred...
That's why it matters so much to me.

12:25 PM
@DragonLord You are missing my whole point. Being stoic all the time is blocking your emotions. Emotions are there for a reason. You need to express them. Only robots are emotionless. Poeple are feeling beings.

It's about not letting the emotions appear in the first place.
...or not letting them impact my behavior in any visible fashion.
Self-control is still my end goal and my experience has shown that it's better to try to keep emotions under control and be calm at all times. It's when you can't control your emotions that things like this happen.
The point is control, not completely suppressing them.

Perhaps taking up a martial art or tai chi would be good for you then.
I did Kyokushin en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kyokushin for many years. That teaches you control. To be good at it you have to learn to keep emotions under control and be calm (especially when sparring).

lol
>_>
I tend to play video games to calm down
Especially sniping at folk ;p
Breath in, breath out. BOOM HEADSHOT.

recycle bin is sleeping, hold down shift then hit 'del' instead
video games stress me out personally

@RecycleBin: I play single player
And well
I occationally take a break when I get stuck.
I once stopped playing a game for 3-4 days forgot about it, and figured out how to finish the last scene... in a dream ;p

12:37 PM
yeah, online play always has cheaters
but technically video games are cheaty by desigh, so called 'intellegence or difficilty'

Oh, I play single player

I like gran turismo, spyro, etc
used to bash tony hawks like 24/7 at one point

(or answer questions on SU. Tip. The more sarcastic the answer is, either the more stressed or the sicker I am ;p)

online play has some creepy people!

@JourneymanGeek I used to play the Doom series a lot (a long time ago). I don't play games much any more.

12:46 PM
@DavidPostill: I tend to play the occational AAA title
the current game I'm playing is free with my GPU ;p
and I tend to pick up games on bundles
besides, how else would I explain wanting better hardware? ;)

I kinda like games that are more about freeplay sort of like minecraft but to a greater extent
building stuff in game, no opponents etc
as long as it doesnt get mundane in what can be done
