@JourneymanGeek ON the topic of USB and ferrite beads: I just noticed my Dell keyboard has one -_-
quite a lot of gear does :/
just curious, what's the issue with them?
being old... perhaps?
00:41
@JourneymanGeek Used for printers, yes?

Here's my question:
http://superuser.com/questions/659327/how-to-run-autohotkey-script-as-an-admin-every-time-a-user-logs-in
I was just wondering if any of you gentlemen here could take a look at it.

@ShashankSawant You'll want to create a task in the scheduler, on the General tab click Change User or Group and type in SYSTEM.
Then on the Triggers tab, add an At Log On trigger and click Any User
(and add the script on the Actions tab)
@Bob In the object name field?
Bob
Bob
@ShashankSawant ya
though I'd actually recommend you use any other account with admin privileges rather than the localsystem - better for security
01:11
@Bob Thanks Man! I will give it a shot...
weird
wasn't even looking at chat, yet provided nearly the same answer as @Bob
01:53
Hive mind
@Boris_yo no
that USED to be a parallel port
serial ports were kinda used where we'd use ps/2 or USB
@JourneymanGeek Weren't they used to connect computers to play Doom on LAN?
still used to interface with some programming interfaces
yeah, using a null modem/crossover cable
so I guess its also used as a lan of sorts
now its primarily used for working with embedded systems

@tapped-out heh
"Fun Sized Bananas" - why, Aldi, why??
o0
actually
smaller sized bananas are often tastier
Depends on your definition of "fun". For me, a fun-sized banana would be the size of a small car. Now that would be fun.

@JourneymanGeek they looked exactly the same as the normal ones on the other side

how can I escape the spaces in a password in a net use command in a bat file? just put it in quotation marks? e.g. net use u: \\server\share\folder "my password" /user:domain\user ?
oh dear god
my dad's SERIOUSLY fucked up his system
@JourneymanGeek just admit it was you in your grand scheme of convincing him to get the chromebook
lol
if only
I need to fix this
what happened?
08:47
there's about ... 20 instances each of some program
not sure what it is yet
and he has ask set as his search provider
so... he installed some random crap again
09:03
suprisingly no
the problem was some canon driver going nuts
09:34
hm
cd rom drive on the shared box sounds like a buzzsaw
I wonder how long the damned thing is going to limp along

anyway, disabled a lot of startup entries that didn't belong, cleaned up a few things...
and next week, it will be fubar again, I think ;p

Okay.
Um, I had a question.
.....okay, so I'll ask
If you have a laptop with Intel HD graphics 4000 and another with a 1 GB dedicated graphic card, then the one with the dedicated card will consume more power, right?
I guess no one's around.
Bob
Bob
10:19
@JourneymanGeek Nuke and repave.
lol
an't do tht either
@Alraxite: probably
Bob
Bob
@flote You could just try it and find out? :P
But, yes, quotes work. Alternatively, the command prompt escape character (^) might also work (before every space).
@JourneymanGeek Okay, thank you.
Bob
Bob
@JourneymanGeek Set up CrashPlan to take incremental backups to a NAS, for the future?
@Bob: yeah, probably
Bob
Bob
10:20
@Alraxite Depends.

or bitorrent sync
I THINK he backs up stuff periodically
Bob
Bob
Laptops with switchable graphics will normally leave the dedi card disabled until you need the additional computing power.
In that case, any extra power use will be negligible.
@Alraxite Of course, sometimes the switchable graphics drivers eff up and get stuck on one card or the other :P
Normally you can force power saving modes (use integrated only, leave dedi off).
@JourneymanGeek We had an early CD drive, I think it was 4x. It would break if you blocked the tray while it was moving.
@JourneymanGeek AKA Java :P
My dad would take apart the drive and shift some gears back into position. Pretty sure you can't do that with a modern drive anymore :\
MySQL issue solved \o/
@Bob yeah, but I don't have a windows pc available atm :)
10:41
lol
@Bob: oh, its an old c2d
and yes, java, and something called putfiles downloader
the DVD drive is only 3-4 years old tho

Just got this thing:
it's tiny
a little wider than a Pi, and about the same length
lol
does it run some cool alternate firmware?
can you stack it with a pi?
Bob
Bob
@JourneymanGeek it's a switch :P
10:49
Does it come with a backdoor in the firmware?
Bob
Bob
unmanaged switch
surprisingly, it was a fair bit cheaper than the much larger TP-LINK equivalent
now I'm just hunting for a halfway-decent cable
too much cat5 crap lying around
I picked up a majorly-reduced Linksys dual-band router the other day, and as a bonus DDWRT works on it.
I don't have any 5ghz stuff though. derp.
ahh
neither do I, I was bitching about that
Bob
Bob
half my stuff is 5GHz-capable now, but I don't use it
my router's an Aetheros one, and its copy of dd-wrt doesn't play nice with dual-band
I don't think mine does either, I can't find how to create a 5ghz network anyway
Bob
Bob
10:55
@tombull89 Oh, mine can create one
problem is keeping the damn thing stable
oh ffs
now I'm down to 100Mbps
figures that the cat5 cable wouldn't work
YES
some good ol' cat5e
gawd I need some cable ties

aha!

I just used one today to keep a leaky showerhead from spewing water all over a soap holder

i checked for connections and all stuff,first time startup the machine detects hdd,while booting second time it doesnt show up hdd in list
what might be the problem?
i have enabled auto detect of sata enabled in bios
11:31
@JourneymanGeek
hm
drive might be dying
but it was properly booting at first startup
and i ran chkdsk too :(
but the problem is now need to repair the hard drives for boot.ini issue
any ideas welcome @JourneymanGeek
if its not detected by bios, its pretty bad
so hard disk gone :(
any temporary ideas to repair it?
@JourneymanGeek
Bob
Bob
@JourneymanGeek ...how does a cable tie help with that? o.O
11:36
@Bob: it stops water from flowing past the showerhead holder, down the tube, and into the soap
Bob
Bob
lol
@JourneymanGeek our showerheads are all leaking from the back :(
might try to shove an extra oring in there

@Boris_yo Hello Sir
@Vignesh4303: when the drive is running, do a full image with ddrescue
if its totally dead, then well, there's little you can do
@Vignesh4303 hey
11:50
honestly? the moment the drive starts vanishing from being detected, its probably the controller.
and thats... fixable, if you're a professional data recovery guy. Otherwise, its a leading cause of sudden, inexplicable mortality in hard drives
12:02
@Shyam Yes?
@JourneymanGeek What do they do with controller to bring it back to life?
♬In fourteen-hundred and ninety-two, Christopher Columbus (basically a tyrant, racist and asshole) sailed the ocean blue♬

@JourneymanGeek you guys ok? cyclone hitting you?
@jokerdino too! :(
lol
@allquixotic: cyclone? What cyclone?
@JourneymanGeek o nvm, you live far away from india, i always forget
@Boris_yo: you do that voodoo
@allquixotic: we have Sumatra and java between us and any inclement weather
what? a year ban?
12:13
who?
ahh
@tombull89: known troll
he's been a PITA for quite a while
Only on SU?
yeah
oh suspensions are network wide I think
12:16
@tombull89 I'm tired of constantly destroying his accounts
12:27
@OliverSalzburg: so, IP ban? ;p
has never been able to get into the mind of a troll
@JourneymanGeek I don't have access to that
@OliverSalzburg: ahh
alas.
oh well
But constantly deleting all evidence that ties to the IP is probably not helping :P
So suspension it is
if it comes back, we can just flag it into oblivion

uh
We got some IRC in our Chat over here
@tombull89 huh?
Sounds like an IRC chat bot
the bot has been here for 2 months, and it has nothing to do with IRC (although Bob is thinking about making an IRC gateway to SE chat)
12:38
I only thought it said "hello" didn't think it did anything else.
Also, gratz on 13,337.
a few of the commands are useful but most of them are for entertainment... I still think the automatic greeting is pretty useful
and I improved the greetings significantly, especially for new users (< 20 rep)
unfortunately we have no way to greet anonymous chat viewers who aren't logged in, but a logged in user who doesn't have enough rep to chat gets a different (friendly) message
I can't code for a damn but it's always interesting looking through it
there are a lot of ... strange comments in the chat-bot source code, but I only wrote about 0.5% of the code; Zirak from the chat.stackoverflow.com javascript room wrote the rest
12:57
@allquixotic absolutely no impact here. Cyclone too far north.
Bob
Bob
@allquixotic well, finally got my laptop back, so, next step: blog! :D
not sure if I should do like @JourneymanGeek and host on BuyVM w/ offloaded MySQL, or just run my own instance of MySQL on WLS...
also, I just learned of the existence of recursive regex
the horror...
13:36
@Boris_yo Sorry! Never responded to you yesterday. I was lurking around :)
@SimonSheehan Apology not accepted! You will pay for this!
@allquixotic What's this about?
@SimonSheehan How much do you have in your PayPal account?
13:38
@Boris_yo I dont have a paypal account!
@SimonSheehan Then pay with your blood! (references to Elder Scrolls: Oblivion)
hahahaha
I still need to play that, I was pretty into Skyrim for a bit
@SimonSheehan I think Skyrim is improved upon Oblivion.
Ah, so im not missing out on too much :)
@SimonSheehan And what is this reference I keep hearing "I shot my leg with arrow" or something?
13:40
I'm actually currently on Assassin's Creed 3, it's quite enjoyable over the first game :)
@JourneymanGeek Only 3Dfx does Voodoo.
13:53
Wudup? @Hennes
Who remembers period when games were ripped the heck out of resources for taking less space on media? How movies, soundtrack were gone in games.
@Boris_yo good old 56K days :)
@flote That was the main reason for ripped games?
what will they think of next: new windows vulnerability FONTS :-) ""A remote code execution vulnerability exists in the way that Windows parses specially crafted OpenType fonts (OTF). An attacker who successfully exploited this vulnerability could run arbitrary code in kernel mode. An attacker could then install programs; view, change, or delete data; or create new accounts with full administrative rights.""
Ripping game resources takes away from games' atmosphere.
@Boris_yo I guess. I remember I was still on a modem when I played them
13:59
Playing Fallout games without animated deaths, without music, without videos makes it boring and pointless.
There were series of Classic Fond discs made between 90s-99s that contained different games of this period, all were ripped and strongly packed. That's why one disc contained many games.
Company got closed when games occupying more than one disc started being released.
@Boris_yo they shouldn't be ripping out the main components of the game, I can think of other things to toss out :-)
@Psycogeek Main components like?
Animations in Fallout games? That made people to die having same animation regardless of weapon used. There was only one animation of them falling to the ground. Heck why need even that of you can remove that as well so people will disappear instead?
@Boris_yo I don't know. just seems like every piece of software nowadays has tons of crap in it that can be thrown out, that does not effect the way it works.
@Psycogeek You are speaking of software, not games.
So when people are tossing out stuff that does effect the way the software worked, that seems like crasy ness
14:11
@Boris_yo Its took an arrow to the knee.... soldiers would say it randomly, it was funny
So ripped game is pointless because you compelete it for nothing, no outro or end of story.
Bob
Bob
@allquixotic Nice. Reminds me far too much of games of Mafia, though...
@Boris_yo I have even seen it in games. Putting on the whole level creation tools (without a option to remove) leaving in SDK things instead of client packages. Options to remove stuff like "how we made the game" and "developer movies"
@Bob I'm home :D off from work today :D holiday :D
Its thanksgiving!
14:13
so I can click on your links and not get Access Restricted
So everyones off right now in Canada :)
Bob
Bob
lol
I've been playing Planetside 2 for a few hours
I'm really interested in Hearthstone, but of course I'm not important enough to be invited to the beta
It's a good game, although I stopped playing a few months ago, just wasn't as exciting for me
@SimonSheehan When americans took land of root americans?
14:15
@Boris_yo Not quite, since we seem to time ours differently than the american one :p
you mean when European invaders took the land of the native Americans
@allquixotic Then european invaders became dwellers in USA?
@allquixotic: or those pesky upstart modern humans chased off the pre-historic homids?
@allquixotic then we celebrate having raped the land and killed all the natives, by pigging out on way to much food, and drinking till we pass out. Or you can go to the casino :-)
> I don't have any malicious intentions, just creating a simple hack for a game online
@Psycogeek That's where "stuffing your face" expression came from?
@Boris_yo That expression was coined by a famous face stuffer in 1457, way before the raping of the Americas
Lo all
@SimonSheehan Somehow I doubt that Canadian would build something like that. The Canadians I know would reject that because it does not have enough insulation.
@Hennes Well we usually have to bundle up and hope the oil powered stove is running at the BK Lounge, so it can be tricky
14:33
@Hennes: canadians would go "this is not cold, eh"
No. But there is no snow on the roof. Either that is a heated roof or it is not cold
So, ehm, yes. In case of that picture: "Yes, this is not cold"
Very good analysis of Canada ;)

Q: How do I find an IRC channel?

StarkersNormally when I discover an awesome library or technology that I can use, its website has its server and irc listed, so it's easy to communicate with the community. But how do I find IRCs that I'm not sure actually exist? I'm trying to get to grips with Curses, a library that allows for fullscre...

I'm not entirely sure if this is on or off topic
I don't see how it relates to computer hardware or software.
cursus! Or maybe ncurses ;-0
14:39
It relates to internet technology, but I would say that's off-topic in the same way webapps are off-topic
Well, software support. I did not VTC it since it was nicely generically asked.
if its per channel, its /list
How do I find something. Not how do I find $this _specific_thingy
if he means a global irc search, it dosen't exist.
Well /list can load a LOT of channel...if your on something like freenode
14:41
I figure searchirc is as good as /list; both will have omitted entries.
but return a good majority of the popular results
In any case, the user asking the question still has some basic googling they forgot to do, "irc search engine" brings up a lot of good stuff
@DarthAndroid I've been hearing more and more around the place that we aren't against people who refuse to google, and basic questions are fine
i.e. lack of google-fu is not a reason on its own to close a question (although you can downvote it if you feel it's egregiously bad)
@allquixotic If we closed it for that reason, we might as well close down the site lol
I don't need google, I use ass-fu I pull all my answers right out of my butt :-)
ok... wtf?
superuser.com/users/263434/glenda-peter this user has odd answers. I right clicked on her ava and got graph.facebook.com/100006695373960/picture?type=large . Then, I removed the last bit to get graph.facebook.com/100006695373960
creepy much?
14:58
what
Seems... not very legit
yeah, spammer
for sure
