@Bob yup
actually... it WAS YOU! ¬_¬
BTW, that chair... is more unconfortable than the darn iron throne....
could someone kindly explain me why I was targetted with this comment
"You have to use something other than bridging to do this. Routing with NAT, for example. You can also use four address mode, if both ends of the WiFi link support it."
that bit of it I think

@Bob: its back up

@iKlsR lol
@JourneymanGeek well, of course - chat was down too, and we'd hardly be chatting here if it were down!
we really need a backup communication method in case chat ever goes down for extended periods...
@Bob fair...

How do you even fail to make a cable that badly?
How do you manage to introduce static over USB??

When laptop wakes up from sleep it sometime is in some bs-mode with shortcuts. Space does something that I don't really know what it is, freezes up the computer and shows a bunch of transparent frames.
clicking esc, alt & win-key randomly for a while solves it
I tried googling but don't know the name of this behaviour so no dice
@Bob: magic!
also nice to see some dogs in chat, chat means cat in French and it shows
lol
@Bob: I've had a USB cable that did that
and yeah, I've had some epically bad USB cables
Bob
Bob
@JourneymanGeek well I have three identical ones here that do that :P
07:16
hate or have?
Bob
Bob
I need to get a new extension cable - the computer move has put some things just out of reach :(
Bob
Bob
@JourneymanGeek both :P
they're effectively useless - how do they even make those?
how do you eff up a cable with four lines that badly?
(yes, the data pair should be twisted, but even that's not very hard)
@Bob: obviously its not made from oxygen free silver that has been hand forged in the fires of mordor.
Here is a pic of one of my dogs, should probably have cropped t harder.
07:18
XD
@JohanLarsson: the water looks muddy ;p
Bob
Bob
@JourneymanGeek I should've bought some of those Brilliant Pebbles :P
XD
(or... they use REALLY thin cables - the sort you'd find in the lowest end headphones)
or in magnet coil windings
and they don't twist em
Bob
Bob
@JourneymanGeek I should probably cut one open. worst part? it's actually shielded... well, you can see the foil mesh
and they get JUST enough noise...
o0
mein gott.
How does someone eff up that badly with to spec cable.
Bob
Bob
and it has a ferrite bead on the male end
07:21
ferrite beads apparently are specifically indicated against in the specifications
you shouldn't need them
Bob
Bob
indicated against?
@JourneymanGeek yea, likely not need, but does it actually hurt? wait, what was the freq of USB signalling?
Bob
Bob
the internal wires (semi-transparent connector) look like your standard PVC-insulated ones. Though, it's like 34AWG thickness? O.o
that might be the problem
Bob
Bob
wait, looks more like 30 AWG
@JourneymanGeek more like a heaping pile of salt
"bad for audio use"
Bob
Bob
@JourneymanGeek the problem is removing a metal object from the wire
cutting the connectors off and resoldering them kinda defeats the purpose
the problem is whoever made the wire is an idiot
Bob
Bob
well, yes :P
in QUITE a few cases they're just clip on ones
not too hard to remove
Bob
Bob
@JourneymanGeek not the cheaper ones
@JourneymanGeek I've managed to cut the casing off, but now it's a solid bead left
hm... I wonder if I could smash it with a hammer
o.O
tapped it with a hammer and it just broke apart
still fails with the hub
nope, the complete obliteration of the bead did not make any difference
@JourneymanGeek still sound shit on the headset, and still fails to work with the hub :P
07:41
lol
Bob
Bob
probably shitty wires or failure to twist them
its just plain shit then
Bob
Bob
so... I wonder what this is good for :P
and why the hell they went to the trouble (and additional cost, and incorrectness) of adding foil shielding and a bead if they can't even get the damn thing working
> Contrary to my initial supposition, the purpose of the USB cable shield
is not to protect the USB data lines from outside interference, but
rather to prevent the USB device from radiating EMI.
well, that just makes everything completely useless
lol
they probably just bought the cable in bulk
and never QAed
Bob
Bob
@JourneymanGeek well their suppliers failed
you'd think someone somewhere would test it
why even bother with a half-working cable
either make it fully working or make it a full dud -_-

@Bob -_-
@Bob Selenium/PJS would be sufficient if you use my shims code, but Selenium/Firefox would definitely work
Bob
Bob
@allquixotic how does the resource usage compare?
@Bob neither one uses a lot of resources, but FF 24 is actually quite efficient with one tab.. yes, it will map a decent amount of RAM into the process, but so will any other modern browser... and I'm sure it's better to have "native" ES5 support than those shims, for performance
wtf, my server claims it has a load of 160
can't find any evidence of what's doing it
oh ok
one of my opensimulator mono-boehm instances is only eating 795.8% of my CPU

@allquixotic :waitwhat
I assume that's queue length or something?
@Bob it's the number reported by top
at least it's only mapping 1.2 GB of resident RAM (out of 32 GB), so it's not leaking or anything
14:08
I think the thread pool just exploded with too many threads; it had over 7500 items waiting in the work queue of the SmartThreadPool

The Hessdalen light is an unexplained light usually seen in the Hessdalen valley in the municipality of Holtålen in Sør-Trøndelag county, Norway. History and description Unusual lights have been reported here since 1940s or earlier. Especially high activity of Hessdalen lights took place from December 1981 until the summer of 1984 when lights were observed 15–20 times per week. The frequency of the lights caused a gathering of numerous tourists staying there overnight to see the phenomenon. Since then, the activity has decreased and now the lights are observed some 10–20 times per year. T...
> One recent hypothesis suggests that the lights are formed by a cluster of macroscopic Coulomb crystals in a plasma produced by the ionization of air and dust by Alpha particles during radon decay in the dusty atmosphere.
@allquixotic ^
15:22
@allquixotic 32GB of RAM? Nice. You can probably afford yourself to run 3000 tabs in Chrome...
hey guys, i have an old notebook... which has 512 MB RAM.... it's DDR2 553...
I wanna buy one more RAM...
But what I buy 1 GB RAM.... that is 800 MHz
Will it work?
It should , right
?
Another thing is.... how can I find out if the notebook even has 2 slots?
or what is the maximum RAM that the notebook supports?
maybe it's 1 GB, maybe only 2 GB
If it's 1 GB and it only has 1 slot.... I would buy 1 GB and exchange it with the 512 that is in there right now
Bob
Bob
go look up the model number -_-
where can i find it?
it's somewhere in windows?
Bob
Bob
...
written? in some file?
it's TravelMate 2410
Acer TravelMate 2410....
Bob
Bob
15:31
great, now go look it up
It's like 7 years old laptop
;o)
Bob
Bob
there should still be specs for it
i know
but there are thousands of versions of TravelMate 2410
;o)
or at least like 20...
on the bottom of the notebook... i shoudl see the exact model number right?
Bob
Bob
there is only one version of every model (differing colours aside, sometimes)
MS 2177 is the model number!
so i will look it up
Bob
Bob
15:33
if there appears to me more than one, then you have a product line, not a single model's number/ID
the product line is TravelMate 2410....
the model number is MS 2177
so there are maybe 100 different model numbers of TravelMate 2410, right?
like NS2177
QS2177
etc...
this is what you meant?
15:47
ok , so now i know that the maximum supported RAM in the notebook is 2 GB
The manual says:
System memory 256/512 MB of DDR2 400 memory, upgradeable to 2 GB
using two soDIMM modules
But, how do I know if it is possible to have 1 GB in one slot and 1 GB in another slot?
Or.... only 1 RAM which is 2 GB in one slot....?
and second slot being unused...

@tapped-out pppfffft!
@BobSurl Hello, new user! This is Root Access, a chatroom for Super User, and I am this channel's helpful chat bot. You will need to earn 20 reputation to chat; meanwhile, if you need help, please see the Help page for Super User.
@tapped-out What did this post promote? I am curious.
didn't promote anything; there weren't any links or anything
@tapped-out Then I don't understand why these kind of questions are here. Unless someone has personal vendetta with SE network.
for the lulz? "different" user posted another grossly inappropriate question minutes after it, but it got nuked before i could cap it
22:24
is the same as Christianity haters posts
yeah
we're big enough to have trolls
I had to help with the flags :(
would any C2D-era laptops have DDR3 or they all DDR2?
@tapped-out pretty sure DDR3 didn't exist until Nehalem, so they'll all be DDR2
22:38
Core 2 is actually getting quite long in the tooth (old) by now... considering that Nehalem and Sandy Bridge were huge advances, Ivy Bridge was another incremental advance, and then there's Haswell, with Broadwell looming in '14
I'll probably buy into Surface Pro 3 when Broadwell mobile chips hit (Microsoft won't take very long to iterate, I don't think... Surface Pro 2 came out FAST)
isn't the intel tactic 1.1 about the development of the chips?
i'm just looking a for really cheap (~$150) laptop to tide me over for a couple more years, most of them are C2Ds (T7x00)
trying to low-ball it with something that old probably won't satisfy you, especially if you plan to live for it for a couple more years
don't know if you can get anything newer for $150 (that's an insane price for any complete system, even a tablet, unless you go to China) but you should really try
you should set your budget higher - I can't imagine you are living with something worse than a C2D right now - are you?
I mean in your shoes I could probably live with a Sandy Bridge laptop for a couple more years... but C2D? hell no
my current laptop is a HP (problem #1) tx2000 with an AMD Turion x2 (#2)
anything would be an upgrade from this
I live with a P4... :(
22:46
it's not my primary system, i have a desktop with a first-gen i3 that's fine for my needs
i'm just looking for something with a bit more oomph that'll last until college (almost two years off)
current lappy won't even play YouTube videos smoothly :/
brb, dinner
Bob
Bob
@allquixotic the DDR version (2-3) likely wouldn't have too significant of a impact (apart from the price)
23:00
@tapped-out well, you're not going to find anything with a discrete graphics card for that price, and Intel's iGPU graphics were horrible until Sandy Bridge
@Bob yeah but all the pre-Nehalem memory controllers are all DDR2, so I was just answering his question that you won't be able to find DDR3 on a pre-Nehalem (pre-i3/i5/i7)
Let the religious shitstorm begin. Or is it holy war?
@Boris_yo actually, I've had a relatively nice experience there. I am not a Christian (I'm a very devout atheist) and I made that clear in my profile and they were still willing by and large to answer my questions about their faith. Much as I am not a fan of organized religion, christianity.se is a relatively sane place.
@tapped-out Look at prices for laptops running the Celeron 1017U... it's dual core, Ivy Bridge, low cost, and it'll help future-proof you a lot more than buying a C2D laptop, especially because a laptop you buy with an Ivy Bridge processor is going to come with modern things like WiFi 802.11n, Bluetooth 3.0 or 4.0, etc
@terdon That is until you try to teach them something... Then it begins.
@allquixotic Celeron? Oh noes..
Bob
Bob
FINALLY

23:11
@Boris_yo Well, yes, that's the case for all religions. All I'm saying is that the official stance on christianity.se is really very good. Have a look at this meta post

Q: Brothers, we are not Christians‼

CalebI am a Christian. You say you are. But we are not. It seems that a lot of folks are having a hard time wrapping their heads around the scope of this site. While I respect the SE staff* and have been impressed with the effort they have taken (and judgement they have shown) in nurturing this site ...

Anyway, I am not about to defend christianity here so let's leave it at that :)
Bob
Bob
@allquixotic I'm pretty sure I've seen quite a few C2Ds with 802.11n...
@Boris_yo Celeron isn't really bad :P
It's lower-end, sure, but it's actually quite efficient - and more powerful than an Atom.
@Bob Celeron has only L1 cache, Atom has all 3.
"If you are more inclined to resent rather than celebrate the differences between us, then this may not be the site for you. "
Like, Vi and emacs? ;p
(that said, I think I have a few flags on christianity. Troll hunting!)
23:29
wait! @terdon is in christianity?
@Braiam yes, I am fascinated by religion and in how otherwise intelligent people can manage to hold such contradictory ideas. I've posted a couple of questions and will probably post more. And no, I am not religious.
I was just pleasantly surprised by how open christianity.se was to dissenting ideas.
