12:00 AM
apparently remove the sites you want to block but get changed back from windows defender's whitelist
(besides, hosts.txt is a pretty hamfisted way of blocking sites. Granted i DO do that with the MVPS list on a few systems, but primarily where I think there's a higher than usual risk of stupidity)

are you saying you can change defender's whitelist?

I'm guessing so

Any ideas on how?

I'd need to check ;p
I don't have a windows 8 system running at the moment

Im rather surprised that MSE only does this on win7

12:13 AM
win 8 ;p
and I'm guessing its using a newer/betaish build with more features

of MSE? Could be.

yup, so the feature will either be in future builds, or they 'fork' the windows 8 'defender' and vanilla MSE

12:33 AM
Dumb linux question, can I use the compiled stuff on another box?
Or in other words, it was compiled in one and I want to use it in another .

@HackToHell: If it has the same libraries, and prerequisites installed, yes

ok thanks

glibc or whatever libc library it has is critical
io9.com/5936065/… ahh vegas. The Gambling, the Girls, the Glamour.. the mushroom clouds...

@HackToHell also needs the same ABI

@Bob thanks, although it doesn't guarantee for my account :D

A: What about a post at the top for newbie's

avirkThis is just because people don't want to read out the documentation of SOFAQ. I don't think that people will read it while SE has wrote down a good documentation for all network sites on their FAQ link. While they have put the notification when you about to ask a question. And the same for a ne...

@avirk what do you mean (note: i dislike MSO)

@soandos hheheheheheh wat a note :p
There are some arguments with a person and I want to clarify that I'm right or wrong at my PV
I downvoted - the screenshot you posted is a good example of BAD GUI. It is a GUI designed by programmers. If you want people to "do the right thing" then you make it easy, clear. You don't arrogantly assert that they simply RTFM. — skinnyTOD 11 mins ago
I replied
@skinnyTOD I don't think its arrogantly forced the newbie to live with it, just you have need to make give attention on that. If you are not giving attention on that BIG heading How to Ask then I don't think the newbie will try to notify in the notification area which is much smaller than it. However old notification method was good to notify as that was appear on the top of the site like a popup. But though newbie has a good interface to use the SE sites as they have clearly wrote down a good documentation that which kind of questions you should ask there. — avirk 7 mins ago

@avirk I think you are in the right, but I think MSO has the most downvoting and opinionated voting of any place on SE

@soandos yeah I know as there are many PV regarding different users so its not bad to get downvote. I just wanted to know about that I'm right or wrong

really, don't take it personally

1:54 AM
@soandos not until I'll not post a question :D

1 hour later…
2:58 AM
@soandos hmm ok

3:24 AM
What's up, internet?

morning folks

Anyone know how big 50 hours of HD video is?

@soandos 1080p ?
loss less ?

would vary on the codec, bit rate etc no?

3:33 AM
@HackToHell sounds right (I am not a video guy, just looking for high quality video)

my gameplay videos captured at 1080p are ~ 1gb/minute

@Sathya, 24 frames a second?

@soandos it was 30

what is just under 1080p?

18.0 Mbps for a blu ray vid @ 25fps with AVC

3:35 AM
720p

and that is how big?

depends upon bitrate
not on resolution

same 24 frames

can't recall, tbh
@HackToHell no, depends on resolution as well. Higher res == more pixels == bigger size

for 50 hours, 10+ TB, 1 TB, 100 GB, 10 GB
ish

3:37 AM
~3000gb / 3TB per my 1080p / 30fps
I think that's like at the higher end of the spectrum

@Sathya Actually it does affect the size directly, at larger resolutions, you will need more bitrate
filesize (in MB) = (bitrate in Mbit/s * 8) * (video length in seconds)
An rought estimate with x264
If you have a high resolution and less bitrate, you will get a crappy video

4:32 AM
Anybody around that can make logos?
Anybody around at all? :P

@KronoS what sort of logo?

4:47 AM
@nhinkle A windows, a Mac, and a Linux software logo
it's for the blig
@nhinkle something like this:

@KronoS blig? BLIG? ok...
:P

@Sathya oh whoops... lol

5:07 AM
@jokerdino: ping
@Sathya: yes, the Blig. Weren't you informed of it? ;p
is loving the new phone. Amusingly, i've primarily been using it to check e mail >_>

@JourneymanGeek ;P
@JourneymanGeek which phone?

@Sathya: HTC One V

@JourneymanGeek ooh nice

(was reasonably priced, and the nicest cheap phone my new carrier had)
I need to throw in a microsd card though, quite a lot of apps (including the built in help app) won't work without it.
oh, and in theory I can unlock the bootloader easily, which I may do once the warranty runs out ;p

5:22 AM
@JourneymanGeek I believe it is running on Android 4.0, right?

ya
4.03 with the sense overlay. Its closer to vanilla android than the other HTC One phones

cool

Its scary, I have a device more powerful than half the computers i have owned, and more power than it took to put a man on the moon in my pockets ;p
2
(and quite unexpectedly. I sort of only had a day's notice that i need a new phone, and my old carrier cut my previous line 3 days early ;p)

5:57 AM
@JourneymanGeek pong

@jokerdino: odd question, you mentioned you couldn't get a postpaid phone here right?

sorta

Is it cause you're on a student pass or don't have a regular address?

but i don't even have a phone at the moment >_>
i think it's the address

ahh, ok

5:58 AM
i need a citizen or PR's address I think

oh, then a non issue for what i was wondering about

hm

my sister in law would be coming to singapore in january, would be a pain in the rear if it wasn't like that ;p
(or just get the phone in my brother's name)

sister in law you say?
where is the chosen one?!?

well currently future sister in law
currently in india, wedding's in january

5:59 AM
aha ;-)
i see.
just buy the phone under someone else's name.

probably ;p
also needs to talk his dad into changing his plan

what plan are you in at the moment?

starhub smartsurf 100

googles
looks okay-ish

most of the basic plans are about that much

6:06 AM
and you switching to?

oh
my dad is on a singtel classic 3g plan
... no free incoming calls
I want him to switch to the 'newer' ione plan which costs the same, but has free incoming calls

free incoming calls.
i miss those things here

hmm?
wierd, I was under the impression prepaid phones had that

Bob
6:22 AM
@jokerdino o.O
I actually don't know of any plan where you have to pay to receive here :\

@JourneymanGeek they never did.

@Bob Singapore. nuff said

hasn't been on prepaid in ages
@jokerdino: well,our carriers arn't too bad
unlocked phones!

well, i don't have a smartphone at the moment.
just a brick
but i see where you are getting at

6:23 AM
(though there was this story floating around of a british carrier who... superglued simcards in place)

superglue? would that even work?

Bob
@jokerdino yes.

Bob
It could probably be removed with a little work, but... most people are probably too scared.

:/

Bob
6:25 AM
at least, it's cheap if I keep data usage down :\

that is just prepaid

Bob
no, it's not

just that you already pay

Bob
data is so expensive here, but calls are relatively cheap.. not that good for me :P

6:27 AM
there's apparently a 45 USD a month, unlimited everything a friend of mine in the states uses

India has cheaper plans than any other country ;p

because the telcos save on 2G+3G licenses :P

lol
by bribing officials? ;p

bribe the ministers

ya ;p
Oh

6:32 AM
anyway we get cheaper data and calls yay :P :P

Bob
o.O
How's India's population density?

@HackToHell: at some point of time, I hope we drop the crappy reliance dongle, and just get a sim card
@Bob: very dense ;p

Bob
I pretty much failed geography classes, by the way :P
@JourneymanGeek Then, are there a lot of towers or is reception just crap?

@Bob we add the population of australia every year :-)

@Bob: particular provider is crap in non metro areas
guess where I spent my holidays? ;p

6:34 AM
@Bob Reception is awesome as long as you are in the city

Bob
@JourneymanGeek That would explain a lot.

There are like 5 providers and there is intense competition

Bob
@HackToHell I wouldn't be surprised if it were better than here, coverage (and congestion) is surprisingly bad considering how few people there are :\

And pretty much every city is like New York's Times Square
soooo crowded
I pay 1$ for free same(provider to provider) calls and 100 local sms per day
and 27 hrs of talktime

reminds me, I should move to prepaid

6:58 AM
lol
not using it much?
@HackToHell: we have 3, but most of them have decent/good coverage in such a small place ;p

@JourneymanGeek yeah, paying gobs of money just for data, which I'm sure I can get a better tariff on prepaid
if not equal

A: Why are there multiple Chrome instances running even though I only have one window (only one tab) open?

vasa1You can read the details here: http://blog.chromium.org/2008/09/multi-process-architecture.html Google Chrome takes advantage of these properties and puts web apps and plug-ins in separate processes from the browser itself. This means that a rendering engine crash in one web app won't affect...

11.1 Use Restriction

Just found this in my monitor's specifications, wonder what monitors would cost that do allow this use.

@DanielBeck :D really and user's comment make it clear :P

I wouldn't have a problem with it if the information were somehow difficult to find, but you open the manufacturer's product description and there's a photo with 4 GPUs installed...
Clearly not a second of research effort...

He wants to install 4 graphics cards but doesn't know what 4-way SLI is?
That...
What?

@OliverSalzburg Reload. He wants 4 independent cards. Now I'm not 100% sure, but isn't that even easier? Just install them and you're done?

@DanielBeck Yeah, just got the update
@DanielBeck Yeah, I'd assume that's plug&play.

@TomWijsman Does that also explain why the 500GB partition is larger than the 2TB one? :D
I guess, yeah it does

They aren't relative to each other I suppose.

@OliverSalzburg Gentoo Linux. :D

@nhinkle also my first line he mention only about FF14 while it works on older though

@avirk true. Anyhow, I see no need to remove it.

So does it still should be an edit?

I think it's OK as a separate answer.

@nhinkle thx :)

@OliverSalzburg Microsoft really failed when doing any kind of 'progress bar'
