12:00 AM
Sounds like it fails on removing a virtual directory?

Wil
Nothing virtual directory related... one of the components has become corrupt / did not update/remove and now it is buggered - can't manually remove/repair/reinstall

Well, it is related, else it wouldn't crash there.
Have you tried running webconfigca -u manually?
And checked with Process Monitor for anything odd?

Wil
@TomWij Yeah, program crashes and not tried process monitor...
webconfigca -u just does this - then puts the entry in to event viewer that I wrote in connect.... which is why obviously the setup is failing

at System.Web.Configuration.VirtualDirectoryMapping..ctor(System.Web.VirtualPath, System.String, Boolean, System.String)
        VirtualPath virtualPath,
	string physicalDirectory,
	bool isAppRoot,
	string configFileBaseName

Wil
that refers to IIS/web virtual path I think - or it should be fed a directory... I am not entirely sure, but I don't think it should be that complicated.... something is corrupt as it just won't remove, even from programs and features...
the whole thing is buggered

12:10 AM
It might be an invalid virtual path, inaccessible physical directory or fails to refer to the right config file.

Wil

So most likely, Process Monitor would find the culprit.

Wil
hmm.... Ill try procmon now

@Wil Such setups are complex by themselves, it's way too tedious to check, fix or report every single issue...

Wil
right, 2,878 events found.... starting to hate computers!

12:16 AM
@Wil Ugh!

Filter the correct ones like succes, buffer overflow, no more entries, reparse, ...
I guess you should look for something like invalid parameter, access denied or worst case name not found.

Q: How can I get Gmail Chat to run in background on my iPhone?

zkiddFor my iPhone, is there anyway to have gmail chat ping me, when a new chat occurs, and I am on another app? Unlike Android or Blackberry, I am amazed that I have yet not found anything that works well on the iphone for chatting with friends. Am I missing something here? Or is this just one of ...

off topic
anyone want to help me close it?

Maybe figure out the last moment there was written to the log, or try to find the moment the process crashed and scroll up.

@nhinkle +1

probably belongs on apple.se. i don't think that's a path we can vote to close on though
i'll flag it for a mod to do a direct migration

Wil
12:21 AM
@TomWij Filtered out success and down to 566 - but I can't see anything that makes me think there is an error - I think it is related to having a beta copy of that component, and I have basically buggered it up... should of uninstalled it before the service pack or something...

@wil: msicuu2 is still an option to force a hard removal, but it leaves behind permission problems in the registry so be careful, although I have a SU answer containing fixes if you experience them later
(windows installer cleanup utility)

here goes... wish me luck, @KronoS and @Sathya
@KingstonSSDNow I'd like to review the effectiveness of an SSD in an optical bay caddy + regular HDD for storage. Think you could help out?

Wil
hmmm... Haven't used the clean up tool for ages... I don't really care about other errors as I have been meaning to reinstall Windows for ages (still got OEM crap on here)... so if it goes wrong... Il just restart from scratch

(to be sure: I don't mean disk cleanup)
Faulting application name: WebConfigCA.exe, version: 1.0.20105.407, time stamp: 0x4d25021d
Well, for the fun of it I tried to see what -u did to my computer, it seems to crash too.
(Please note that I have MVC 3 installed)
ACCESS DENIED: C:\Windows\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v4.0.30319\Config\bu24jvzu.tmp
Are you sure you don't have any DENIEDs?
Because the above might be releated to your virtual directories being loaded from that config directory.
oh
apparently I'm not running this as administrator
It completes as administrator.
It seems to be doing config related things in:

Wil
@TomWij I meant the msi clean up!

12:33 AM
C:\Windows\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v4.0.30319\Config\
C:\Windows\Microsoft.NET\Framework64\v4.0.30319\Config

Wil
@TomWij BE CAREFUL this is related to uninstalling the MVC 3 framework...

@Wil: -i installs it again

Wil
@TomWij I have even used reflector to take a look - it is a simple program... but I just don't know why it fails... I have taken a backup of the folder and deleted the original... going to try a few more things then going to plop it back if I still can't fix

It adjust the web.config:
            <remove assembly="System.Web.WebPages.Deployment, Version=1.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=31bf3856ad364e35" />
            <add assembly="System.Web.WebPages.Deployment, Version=1.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=31bf3856ad364e35" />

Wil
@TomWij No denied...
@TomWij but.... even if I do that manually, I can't install the other MVC 3 components :(
and it doesn't explain why this is failing!

12:36 AM
It's failing due to Virtual Directories, but I can't find them in my web.configs yet.

Wil
When the MVC 3 setup starts, i took a copy of the temp folder and have all the files it calls - it is how I tracked it down to the aspnetwebpages.msi installer.... but even if I am manually able to do this - not sure why/how this fails and worried it will lead to other problems later on

I'm pretty sure your problem would be in either web.config or machine.config in one of these directories, if you do a Process Monitor trace of what happens and then go to the file summary table, there aren't much other things that happen.

Wil
hmm... with the directory deleted, if I manually run the asp setup, I get this:

And it kinda makes sense for such thing to activate itself in the config files, but you seem to have a virtual directory that prevents it from enabling itself.

Wil
and can't find any logs anywhere...

12:41 AM
Hmm, what about running winmerge.org against each others configuration files?

Wil
the thing is, they will most likely be different - I installed the beta of this.... but it just seems to be buggered and won't uninstall... even if I was to copy your settings, there may be something, somewhere still there

Versions would differ, but maybe we can find a section that's defined at your side that doesn't belong there or something...

Wil
first thing I am going to try... I just did an admin install of that MSI and extracted all files and it is very different... I wonder if it is worth a shot manually placing them in the correct folder and trying to run the msi again...
Just hope the admin install didn't do anything! :P ( superuser.com/questions/251128/… )... mind you, if it makes it work, I don't care if it does!
hmm, interesting - nothing in the folder and it just fails without writing a log... put the folder back (Even the new version) and the error and log file comes back

I think Windows makes the GAC files elsewhere for normal users.
(Global Assembly Cache)
I don't see why you would extract msi's manually, but well, personal preferences differ...

Wil
well, I did admin install as standard user, ran the normal setup as elevated

12:51 AM
I really think the problem lies at the config.

Wil
Well, happy to compare then...

x86 or x64?

Wil
x64
want me to send you my files, or you send me yours?
I wondering what corrupted it in the first place... was it webmatrix being a beta or installing sp1 over the top, or something else
... in fact, I wonder if I can re download the beta and try to install then remove...

Share both ways, so we can both see the differences

Q: Browsing through twitter how is this possible

bruxthis user http://twitter.com/#!/BlitheDemeanor has 81,403 followers yet has only "tweeted" 33 times. Am I missing something? How is this possilbe?

Wil
Thanks so much for this - but if it takes much longer, I wouldn't bother... this is very annoying, but it serves me right for installing a beta!

1:05 AM
64 bit looks fine
the assembly order is off, but it doesn't matter as there is no such thing as order preference there
Same there, hmm, then it has to do something with IIS?

Wil
hmmm... ours are the same apart from I have deployment installed

Mine is at the bottom of the assemblies list

Wil
im showing identical files, even the order

oh wait, I send you the version after -u (I did -i after I send)
yeah

Wil
only difference is the web.config

1:07 AM
32 bit looks fine too
hmm, I don't know if you can
but what about backing-up IIS and removing the Default Web Site so you don't have virtual directories anymore?
I dunno where that is stored, but WebConfigCA somehow does access it as there are no virtual directories in the locations I just said.

Wil
I dont even have IIS installed at the moment... I did, but uninstalled it when I had all this problem in case it was a component as I never used it anyway

Ah, it's probably a less frequent read entry
Hmm...
Perhaps it somehow still tries to find IIS?

Wil
(I don't use IIS anyway on here... I use .net development server OR deploy to my test server.... now IIS express is out, I doubt I will ever have IIS full on my development machine again)
shall I try to reinstall then?

Please note that .NET Development Server can tend to be slow for debugging/profiling purposes in the long end, I had to switch to IIS for that reason.
IIS isn't that big, so I don't care having it, I can't tell though if it's full or express.

Wil
Do you use Firefox?

1:12 AM
@Wil: Could help, I don't know where it else would look for virtual directories.

Wil
or should say did you use firefox when you noticed it was slow? You are helping me so maybe I can tell you something...

Perhaps your IIS configuration wasn't removed and it tries to read it now but fails to construct the virtual directory objects because IIS is missing.
It's something like that, but can't tell for sure.
@Wil: Any browser
Mainly using Google Chrome and IE9 when developing webpages.

Wil
Firefox tried to search for IPv6 before IPv4 - (I blogged about this very issue - blog.williamhilsum.com/2009/11/… ) ... ASP.Net Development server is not IPv6 compatible so it has to wait for a time out before it loads IPv4.... IIS is IPv6 compliant so it would of loaded fine

Google Chrome as "best supported HTML5" and IE9 to run through the compatibility modes to get my website run on older versions and bad supporting browsers.

Wil
I have not noticed any speed issues AFTER applying this ^^
installing IIS now... and, hope that does help you... as I said, development server should be instant and do everything that IIs full can apart from SSL and very few other things

1:16 AM
@Wil: I don't have IPv6 enabled in overall, dunno if there is a IPv6 setting for chrome that I explicitly need to disable.
Well, it was suggested here and it really felt different:

A: Why do a small amount of add/deletes take several seconds in EF4?

Erik van BrakelI'd advise you to try something like EF Profiler. I think there's a free trial, which allows you to try it out. Basically, with it you can see what kind of things are happening internally with your EF app. Another point to note: Is this by chance a web application? In my own project I found that...

Wil
hmmm... read quickly - wasn't the problem then that the query was wrong / bringing too much data? Ill shut up... Haven't looked at EF4 yet - next on my list after MVC3!
iis now installed
lol... thought it had worked... took a few seconds on updating root web.config file.... but then it failed like always!

No the pages itself (regardless the query) went quicker.
@Wil: Strange, but comparison shows it updated just fine. :-/
Maybe it tries to update the virtual directories afterward or something.
But well, just weird...
I really wonder what the issue is then, I hope Microsoft mentions it (or you manage to solve it somehow).
Yeah, despites that it's new, I like Code First & LINQ

Wil
As I said - I have been trying for two long days (whilst doing other stuff) to get this done.... so fed up!

:(

Wil
@TomWij I am so out of the loop, until a friend said something about EF, I thought LINQ was still the latest thing...

1:32 AM
did you try the clean-up utilitiy?

Wil
@TomWij annoyingly, I can't find any of the beta installs here (think I did it through web pi), and all links on the internet seem to be dead

EF = Entity Framework, you work with entities, either defined by code, through model or through (some third thing I forgot, data?)

LINQ = Langugae Integrated Query, allows you to run queries on various collections in the langugae, can be a list of integers, or as I often use it entities from my code first database.

Wil
@TomWij Just got a stack of domains registered and a huge load of paper with half arsed ideas for the sites... I only did a little asp.net webforms and now I am seriously learning c# and (trying to use) MVC, I am hoping to finally launch these things...
I will use whatever is easiest for speed and has the most samples... I can always change to best later!
I don't know if that sounds lazy, but already so many of my ideas have been released in some form.... I just need to get them done!

1:35 AM
Have you removed the beta's before installing the RTM version of MVC 3?
I've had those previews and haven't had problems, I don't think I even removed the old version before installing the new one.

Wil
@TomWij I never actually had MVC 3 installed (AFAIK)... or if I did have it as part of web matrix, it uninstalled on trying to install mvc3 before failing on this component

Apart from nuking the installation through a clean-up or formatting, I'm out of ideas...
I agree that it's a "corruption" now, it's hiding in a non-obvious place.

Wil
...hmmm just had a hunch,... think I have found the beta installer in the webpi cache folder... should I try reinstalling this before using the clean up tool?
it installed fine!
webmatrix didn't install mvc3... going to try and see if I can remove now
@TomWij Very Very Very weird.... In the cache, I just managed to find both the new AspNetWebPages.msi and the original one... the new one comes up with the error and is a crc match for the one from the MVC3 new installation'.. the original one doesn't work... goes to first screen and the next button doesn't work
don't know what to make of it

1:51 AM
Confusing

Wil
2:03 AM
@TomWij Interesting... checked the registry and the uninstaller points to this msi which does not work... not sure if I can just copy the working one... but going to try!

nice

Wil
bugger, same error!
thought I was on to a winner there!

Good evening everyone.

Wil
Hi Mark!

Hi, @Wil! How are you?

Wil
2:12 AM
@MarkSzymanski fed up! read the last hour of chat!

Ok, I will.

Going to sleep, cya @Wil. I voted on your Connect entry.

ah, yikes.
@Wil: I would try to help, but I don't use windows. Sorry.

Wil
@TomWij thanks!... So you agree... problem!
@MarkSzymanski lol, no problem!

Wil
2:58 AM
new update... click your name!

3 hours later…
6:16 AM
@Wil man that sucks :(

Wil
6:30 AM
@Sathya Yeah :( Looks like MS are working on it... If you have a connect account, can you up vote it if you don't mind... connect.microsoft.com/VisualStudio/feedback/details/650729/…

visited. said "sign in to vote"
signed in
now it says register to vote :X

Wil
ahh, doesn't matter - no need

arghh
done @Wil

Wil
just seems I have spent longer trying t fix it than reinstalling windows will take
thanks!

@Wil you're welcome!
@Wil Is Windows reinstall the only workaround ?

Wil
6:41 AM
I just got an email from someone with a work around - going to try it in a few seconds

ok

Wil
I can't say for certain until I try, but from what he has said, SP1 changes the registry paths and by manually deleting, it works.... I had the beta of this component in and then did the service pack - I had no idea it would break it as it seems pretty robust - recently with VS service packs, you can install over beta without any problems
but... it's me - I can help people with problems all day long and then I always get something myself I can't solve!...

@Wil :) been there

Wil
... probably should be closed, but I thought I would try to give him an advice answer at the same time so he comes back and doesn't just think we close everything! superuser.com/questions/256143/…

that's 20-25k INR
well his budget is ~ $500

Wil
6:57 AM
as a mod, would you just close things like this, or do you think it is nice to answer generically like that? (it does give information to others in similar situation... As Jeff said, give a fish, learn to catch or whatever...)
and... do you like the video!!! When ever people ask about upgrading so many components, I always think of that!

I would just close it, but I'm not averse to someone putting in a general guideline as you have @Wil :)
now that's so much better to look at
and hey, he invented the iCore series :P Apple will be happy :P @Wil

Wil
well done - yeah.. I just know that when I used to do things like that, it annoyed Diago - I still think it is for the best/can help others... even if I do bring down his wrath :S
@Sathya ha! just re read! lol...

@Wil different people, different opinions :)
hey @Wil I have this PC which is not part of a domain, yet the date/time keeps getting reset to current date, how can I prevent this?
I use this PC as a date change server for evaluating RL scenarios, it's a pain to have one transaction on future date and later have it reset to current date

Wil
You want it other than real date? If you just have one application you are doing it for, take a look at Nirsoft RunAsDate if it is the whole computer, go to services and disable Windows Time (W32Time)
ahh, sorry, I thought it was all just done for W32Time service... just checked on my machine and that is only set to manual...

@Wil it's an elaborate database+application server, so I want the date to remain whatever date I set in control panel

Wil
7:08 AM
On XP/2003, you don't even need to click advanced/change

there's no internet time :/

Wil
You may already know as a warning... if this is VERY elaborate, just be careful as changing date/time can invalidate SSL certs and cause other sync errors
@Sathya What OS Version?

What happened to the "recent" envelope?

@Wil Windows XP

Wil
Hmmm... Any restrictions even if not on a domain? - I just did a quick Google and it looks the same... malektips.com/…

7:12 AM
@Wil it's for internal purposes only, and the Internet time tab is not there :(

Wil
even if it is internal, if the DB layer uses SSL or you use IPSec... just a warning as I once wasted a lot of time on a SSL date problem!

@Wil not a webapp
and no IPSec/SSL usage

Wil
@Sathya ehh, what service pack is it (sorry. just not seen it disabled. been a while since I have last used XP, but I thought it just disabled the boxes, not the tab, so not entirely sure what is wrong)
@Sathya no problemo then! :)

@Wil sp3

Wil
I have one XP machine here.. Ill be back in 5 minutes, just going down and boot it to take a look for you

7:19 AM
@Wil thank you!

Q: Eeeek! What happened to my envelope?

MartiThe envelope is gone from next to my name!   How am I supposed to check where those recent points came from? I don't remember the link to that page! Edit: just to summarize the ways that the reputation graph does not make a suitable replacement for the /recent page: The recent page has just th...

@oKtosiTe yes, I was searching for that thanks!

7:37 AM
@Sathya: I hope something useful will pop up soon. Seems to be in a useless state at the moment.

@oKtosiTe I agree with you, I used the envelope pretty frequently on SO where my visits are rare

Wil
@Sathya So sorry... went down, then dogs wanted to go outside and then needed to give a lift to the train station... right... bad news... Windows XP has that time tab.

@Wil no problem.. any chance of it being removed via group policy?

Wil
not if you are not on a domain
standard restrictions can apply - I would go in to regedit and try to do a find for "restrictions" and see if any groups exist

the system is on a domain, but I'm not logged into to the domain server -

Wil
7:43 AM
I could be wrong, but I just thought a restriction would grey out the box, not disable the tab

> 2011-03-11: The envelope in the header next your display name linking to recent activity has been changed into a dropdown menu that opens a popup overlay with information and links. This feature is still being refined.

Q: Recent feature changes to Stack Exchange

devinbThis is the official list of new features and various changes to Stack Overflow and the Stack Exchange network. It is jointly maintained by the community and Rebecca Chernoff♦ (a SOIS team member). RSS feed for this question

@Wil oh

Wil
ahhh.... are you a limited user? I think only admins can get to that tab as it is an admin feature to change the time

@Sathya Thanks.

@Wil I think I have admin rights

Wil
Just do a quick check - go to user management and see what groups you are in - I think you need to be at least power user to change time
actually one second...

7:48 AM
@oKtosiTe also, regd the 6-char edit - this was what I was talking about

Wil
go to control panel > administration tools > local security policy and take a look for change date/time and see if you can change it to add your user

1 message moved from Food

Wil
but it is possible that the domain is over writing it
and I am happy... @TomWij - it is solved! I will tell you more if you want to know!

for the record - I can change the time/date
just that it gets reset after x minutes :/

@Sathya Excellent! At least that allows me to state why I put that hidden comment there.

7:54 AM
@oKtosiTe yep, I do it once in a while

On a related note: do you know of a good clipboard app/extension for Windows/Linux/Firefox/Chrome?

@oKtosiTe Not on the top of my mind..

Wil
hmmm @Sathya - I am still trying to work on this for you! Even Microsoft say to do it the way I told you - microsoft.com/resources/documentation/windows/xp/all/proddocs/…
My guess at the moment, as you can change the time, it is just disabled because time is such a critical component of a Windows Domain (Kerbos authentication - you can not log on to a domain with incorrect time), it does not allow it.... I know that W32tm command is linked to the w32time service, but I think the service is just for other computers to sync from you, not the other way round
you may want to try to disable the service, but I am really not sure that will help

8:18 AM
morning all

8:30 AM
woo! Electorate badge :D

Wil
@DMA57361 morning!
@DMA57361 You care about badges?! You are a mod! That out trumps everything!

@Wil yeah, but this one is gold

Wil
lol!

and I'm only the 26th person to get it on SU
I might be a mod but I still only get the badges if I do the work ;)

Wil
@DMA57361 lol... delete all answers and write them yourself! (joke!)

8:35 AM
lol, na, that'd take too long :P

@Wil thanks anyways
lots of mod flags today

ooo, the tags page has changed as well

is tempted to downvote a single answer by @DMA57361's for the sole purpose of getting his rep to 7777 :p

rofl
@Sathya would be only my 3rd SU downvote :P

can't even find any answer that I feel like downvoting :(

8:45 AM
good :P

/evil mode on :P

whoa, when you said "lots of mod flags today" I didn't realise you meant that many! just seen your mod activity for the day :/
groan

hehe :D

the new drop-down on the profile name is broken in IE7
its like 2 screens wide >.<

lol :D
hang on

8:47 AM
I only realised "week" was there cos I saw it in someone elses MSO question :/

@DMA57361 there you go, much, much better here :D

@Sathya no, I meant the drop-down when you click your name on the top bar

@DMA57361 aha

like so ^

@DMA57361 the dropdown isn't even visible in ie6 :p

8:53 AM
heh, oh dear
do you get 12miles of scrolling right as well?

there's no dropdown, scrolling doesn't even come into the picture :D

no, I get the scrolling all the time

@DMA57361 posted on Meta?

@Sathya do they support IE7?

I think they do..

9:07 AM
hmmm, don't think I've posted an answer in over a week... should really go hunting for something
...why is the community ads post tagged "top-7"?

9:21 AM
@DMA57361 top 7 gets circulated, I believe

circulated where...?

have you not seen the ads on the sidebar?

oh those
that makes sense

@DMA57361 not the a51, et al.. you might have seen vlc, 7zip, et al
top 7 of those gets shows there
hi @IvoFlipse

hi @Sathya it was @akira who posted those pytools :P

9:24 AM
@Sathya didn't know it was limited to the top-few, thought any with the min score would show, but that makes sense

@IvoFlipse orly? o_0

yeah :P

on twitter?
wait, where., I lost you..

well @Mokubai and I had discussed it before as well
Cc @IvoFlipse5 RT @answerguy: Visual Studio plug-in for Python developers http://bit.ly/gk7JEs MPI, NumPy, SciPy, IPython Shell

@answerguy is @akira? o_0

9:28 AM
no, akira mentioned it on chat, thought you had picked it up there :P

oh no, no

@IvoFlipse Did we find out if it worked in the express editions, I can't remember...

@ChrisF mentioned that it wasn't, it doesn't allow plugins

Ah, fair enough, kinda sucky. Not going to pay like £709 just to play with Python....

akira said start ups can sign up at Bizspark and probably get everything for free

9:39 AM
Want to make a startup then? Would we have to actually produce anything?

students can also do well using dreamspark

I already have a startup, though I'm just a single person :)

do you have to have a company setup for bizspark? or do they accept the self-employed?

I'm sure they accept self-employed, but you have to be new :P

and making less than like $1M/yr, it seems

9:44 AM
Don't you have to show something to be eligible for Bizspark?

I'm signing up right now
I have to describe the company
we'll see :)

oo, when did FF4 reach RC stage?

yesterday I believe

ah ok, I'm not entirely out of touch then, will have to have a nosey when I get home
