howdy again all

howdy how :)

lol

@KronoS That sounds familiar. A lot of engineers/CS people at my school ended up with math minors.

@LordTorgamus it's just so easy to get really...

I think some departments even started explicitly prohibiting double-counting of certain courses to reduce the number of people who were getting math minors more or less unintentionally.
I don't think the OP of this question got the message about abandoning the post in favor of new, smaller ones even though Sathya commented and the post was closed... maybe it should be locked?

Q: my linux problems and solutions

Delirium tremensI read somewhere in StackOverflow or StackOverflow Meta that if I had a problem, then solved it myself, I can share the problem and solution with you. Problems: ubuntu nvidia disappearing mouse pointer weird video color usb rync read-only filesystem error kindle read-only fil...

I feel like I've seen it a couple times now, and I don't visit that often, but maybe I just happen to be on the front page when it gets bumped.

Why is chrome so much faster than all the other Internet browsers?

@KronoS because google is awesome?
although it's not always faster, depending on the benchmark

Eh... I tend to disagree... there are some things that aren't so awesome about chrome

what don't you like about it? i have a few gripes, but overall i like it

Chrome = Love!
gmail = eh...
docs = HATE!!!
blogger = decent
calendar = good... but would be way better if it synced with outlook better

i find gmail's feature set far superior to any other webmail's, though i do wish it loaded a bit faster. what's the matter with docs though? sure you can't do super fancy formatting but it is the singularly most awesome software for collaborative projects

8:53 PM
I'm actually going to do a online services match up between google and Microsoft

i'd much rather run my own wordpress install than use blogger though

@nhinkle same here

@nhinkle Agreed. I often collaborate on documents until we're happy with the content. Then they move on to Word/InDesign/similar.

yup
so docs = not hate at all
docs = awesome

@nhinkle my prob is availability... at least for me... it's always crashing:

8:56 PM
hm. never had it crash on me, personally
anyhow i should go get some work done
lots to do

@Google... This is why I haven't switched to your "cloud" computing yet. http://twitpic.com/44xcke

> Internet Explorer 8 was thoroughly destroyed by independent researcher Stephen Fewer. "He used three vulnerabilities to bypass ASLR and DEP, but also escape Protected Mode. That's something we've not seen at Pwn2Own before," said Aaron Portnoy, the organizer of Pwn2Own.
> Safari 5, running on a MacBook Air, was compromised in just five seconds by French security company Vupen. Both attackers netted $15,000 for successfully compromising a browser.
> The contest continues today and tomorrow. Firefox 3.6 is yet to be attacked, and tomorrow will see the very first mobile browser deathmatch. Windows Phone 7, iOS, Android and RIM OS, all with their stock browsers, will be attacked by security researchers to find out just how secure mobile browsing is. Again, $15,000 is available for the first person or team to compromise each of the browsers.
> Google, Apple and Mozilla, incidentally, all rolled out updates to their browsers just before Pwn2Own. It was not a coincidence.
I don't feel safe anymore... :-/
Even though Google Chrome is left not compromised, they can easily do the same that they did to Internet Explorer 8 if they find a hole.

9:51 PM
@TomWij wow that's crazy...
BTW you changed your avatar!

@KronoS, @IvoFlipse, I've got a matlab question for you guys
is there any way to access the last element in an array, like you would in a normal programming language by using arrayname(-1) ?
other than using arrayname(length(arrayname)) which just seems ridiculous

do you already know how long the arrays are?

@nhinkle that's the "normal" way in C/C++/C#

Hello, everyone.

@KronoS the arrays may be different lengths depending on the parameters given, so no, but i can use length() to get them
it's just really ugly having t(length(t)) everywhere when i could just have t(-1)

10:05 PM
@ChrisF MATLAB is basically C++

@KronoS Thought it was - but I've never used it

>> t(-1)
??? Index exceeds matrix dimensions.

@ChrisF it's an expensive peice of software... I'm making sure I have a copy of it installed when I leave the university

@nhinkle I'd expect that if the index is an unsigned integer. Then -1 is actually 0xFFFFFFFF which is probably greater than your array size ;)

10:08 PM
funny... -1 is larger than infinity then :P
i suggest moving to:

Hi there @MarkA.
Haha, there are two Marks here now XD

Wow
i've never met someone else called Mark before

Hehe, I've met plenty of people named Mark XD

10:19 PM
@KronoS Re: Matlab, you seen this?

oh my... invasion of the marks
@Linker3000 no... but python(x.y) is similar to MATLAB

We have a dev team that uses Octave for their initial work and then they refine it in Matlab - it saves on licence costs for us.

> a(end) @nhinkle

10:56 PM
yah, got it now

you tried to OD? :P
or you just made that graph

LOL no
i just made the graph
for a homework assignment

I checked a page where they compare matlab and python syntax, that helps

oh my
it's never good when you look at the printer status page and 8 printers in different labs all have strange error messages
this is a truly comical image (from jeff's twitter):

@IvoFlipse: Could you migrate my question? meta.stackoverflow.com/questions/82494/…

you could have flagged it, so your weight would increase :P

Although installation is a SU thing (which made me post it here), all the rest depends on programming experience.

@nhinkle We had a big laser printer burn out its fuser a few days ago - I checked the error code + I used to repair printers so I checked out the fuser and it was charred! I reported it to the maintenance company two days ago and the engineer turned up today, had a look and said "Yes, you're right, it needs a new fuser - I'll order one and come back with it next week" Sigh.

Hmm, are migrated questins bumped?

Q: What is h264 and why should I care that Chrome is going to stop support for it?

redIagoHey all, I have been hearing that google chrome is either stopping support for or has already stopped support for this movie thing called h.264. What is h.264, and why should I care that they may be dropping support for it?

Subjective?

11:31 PM
turns out we had some sort of power surge in a couple of our buildings
one building is mostly offline, running on backup generators at the moment
so the lab in that building is still down, along with printers
everything else is better now though

@nhinkle Ouch!

yurp, rather nasty
had the whole IT staff running around trying to fix things

@Linker3000 fixed

@KronoS Indeed. Thanks.

no prob... still isn't really a good question though

A: Windows XP: 4GB to 16GB RAM upgrade

Randolf RichardsonYou are right in that the 32-bit edition of Windows XP is limited to a maximum of 4 GBs of RAM. The difference you will find with the 64-bit edition for Windows XP is that it's difficult to find hardware drivers for it, and some software simply isn't compatible. You'd probably be much better of...

the question about what is h264 wouldn't have to be bad, though wikipedia material
this must be due to votes from SO I reckon?

@IvoFlipse "Running 64 bit Windows XP is a "little like having bees live in your head"."

A: How do I install PyOpenSSL on Windows 7 64-bit?

David HeffernanYour problem is that PyOpenSSL is not installed. You don't say, but I infer from your question that you have installed a 32 bit version of PyOpenSSL but are using a 64 bit version of Python. That won't work. If you really can't get a 64 bit version of PyOpenSSL, then the simplest, and possibly t...

Nice, haven't thought of just installing all 32 bit versions as I'm not so dependent on 64 bit Python yet.

see y'all tomorrow

If anyone has a passport account and 20 seconds... please up vote this... connect.microsoft.com/VisualStudio/feedback/details/650729/… ... really want it to get solved!

it's me mashing angrily on the keyboard

Well, by battery is bad (it's in some kind of always-empty state), but luckily the outage was short enough.
@Wil I've got a connect account, I'll look at it.

@TomWij Thanks. I am just getting so annoyed... Been 2ish days trying to solve it on and off... so fed up as I want to start work on a few projects in MVC
