1:46 AM
Good evening, everyone.

4 hours later…
6:01 AM
HI @MarkSzymanski

6:23 AM
hey @Sathya

evening @nhinkle

how are things?

not bad
it's 12pm and I'm sleepy :(

aww. not enough sleep last night?

slept late, got up even later T_T
slept at ~ 1, work up at 9:15

6:27 AM
sorry to hear that
i didn't get much sleep last night either, but only had an hour of classes today
GF just got done with her homework, so i'm off. hope you manage to stay awake. maybe talk to ya later today (or tomorrow, or whatever it'll be in your time zone :P )

@nhinkle lol, see ya!

2 hours later…
8:33 AM
@KronoS, maybe we'll be getting some t-shirts soon....

It’s been a while since we’ve done something arbitrary, complicated, and confusing, so today I’m happy to announce that the name of the company has been changed, effective immediately, to Stack Exchange Inc!

There’s a method behind this madness, of course: we want to emphasize the importance of the 45 sites in our network, which has long since stopped being about programmers:

That, plus, whenever we told The New York Times that we were “Stack Overflow,” they would go to stackoverflow.com and have a heart attack. At least this way people wondering about the company understand that we’re about more than just programmer questions. We have Battlestar Galactica too! …

morning all

> If you live outside the United States, include about a dollar worth of whatever kind of weird thing it is that you use over there for money (no goats or Yap coins, please).
that'll be 45 bucks in my local currency.
morning @DMA57361

hi @Sathya, that's quite the exchange rate

I'm happy it's not GBP or Euros

lol

8:45 AM
Euro == 62bucks, GBP == 72 bucks

yeah

Wil
9:17 AM
@Sathya ... but, does 45 INR actually buy you a lot more than 1USD worth of goods? (When I visited Malaysia, apart from food/drink which was VERY cheap, a lot of stuff seemed to be about the same price)

I can add a Euro for you @Sathya ;-)

@Wil You can probably goto a small restaurant and have breakfast with Rs 45
@IvoFlipse ;)

I should come visit @Sathya :P

always welcome :D @IvoFlipse

I'll first have to start making money again, so perhaps I should turn off all distractions for at least the next hour :P

Wil
9:20 AM
@Sathya just like Malaysia then... crazy cheap food!.... but... e.g. could you send an international letter for ~45INR? / is the "throw in a buck" actually that expensive?

@Wil Rs 45 is not expensive.. I think shipping costs will be

Wil
@Sathya ok!
@IvoFlipse ... Before Malaysia, the furthest east I went was Oman... If you get the chance to visit the region... GO! I loved visiting Malaysia and want to go again some time this year for longer and possibly visit a few near by countries. (If it wasn't for the dogs, would love to move there!).

9:56 AM
@Wil move along with your dogs?

Wil
@Sathya Not sure they could cope with the heat! ... I couldn't put them through quarantine, and the only thing I didn't really like with the country was how the majority of people treated animals... My dad's apartment is right next to Little India and I went exploring one day... saw a pet shop and it just made me angry... I know it may sound silly...

1 hour later…
11:04 AM
lol is it strange to have 7 out of your 29 answers not accepted?

what site? and how old are the questions?

sorry, that sentence was wrong, my mistake!

lol, that helps
and a ~75% accept rate sounds pretty high to me
but then, I don't know the pattern other betas have followed
maybe there's usually a "leading" user or few who take most of the accepts in the early days...?

Wil
@IvoFlipse That isn't really that bad... look at my profile here!

tzenes on Gaming probably has a high score too
but I kind off overdid myself, because I did waste more time than I should have on answering those first questions :P

11:15 AM
data explorer has tzenes at just over 60% on gaming

pff that's a lot given his amount of answers

see data.stackexchange.com/gaming/s/96/… and stick in user ID 102

I mean he even has more badges than Wil

I don't know how reliable the query is

btw Jeff liked the idea of organizing a(nother) contest, more like the Dropbox Quest thing though

11:17 AM
oh?

because we don't want to encourage rep-whoring, but rather quality

makes sense

Wil
@IvoFlipse way to make me feel bad! :P (Mind you - haven't answered in a while now... so buzy and every time I check, no Windows questions!)

I know @Wil, its strange even though we have dedicated linux+mac sites, we fail to attract more microsoft questions here (they don't have anywhere else to go on SE) :S
but @DMA57361 now we have to come up with some nifty queries we could use to set up our own quest :D

@IvoFlipse true, I'm sure we can come up with something irritating :)

11:25 AM
a little birdie even told me that if we assume it could be calculated and we have a sound reasoning for wanting it, we could get the stat

@IvoFlipse I'm not sure what you mean..?

I like stuff like "pimping a new users question so that it attracts at least x upvotes"
I don't think the site currently lists how votes are distributed against edits over time :P

@IvoFlipse given the timeline view I think that should be ok

and stuff like: "master editing" : edit at least x tag wiki's, propose x tag synonyms (or vote for them) and ... (insert something useful)

had a quick check out the most upvoted question - and you can see the vote distribution over time etc - superuser.com/posts/231273/timeline

11:30 AM
that's interesting! though off course I'm not going to check it manually
and the edit should have certain rules to apply, else someone would just edit an already popular post

@IvoFlipse I realise that :) - but I meant if the timeline view can do it then it can be queried
yeah... there's the potential for it to be rather complicated

but it makes it a combo of editing and publicizing the question, help get attention for this one awesome question/answer
do we have referral links, where we can check if a new users became a member after being 'referred'?
and yes @DMA57361 as long as we think it's possible to query, we will get it if we need it
btw, that darn unit testing books does have solutions, buuuuuut you have to show a code/login on the publishers site to get it :\

@IvoFlipse not that I know of; I can only recall only the referral links for questions to determine the three advertising badges...
@IvoFlipse heh, irritating :/

ah well, I get the basic idea and am going to continue reading (there are other examples)
but I'd like to learn from the 'tests' at the end of a chapter
because they make you extend a bit on what you've learned

is it using one of the unit test modules, presumably?

11:35 AM
but if you get stuck in the first one, it get's harder and harder to make it up later in the book :(
yeah, though you have to install some of them

ah, ok, so it covers quite a few then

yeah doctest, unittest and some tools to enhance those (Nose and Mocker)
but it makes me write my own unit test for a code example, but then I don't have the solution :(

do any of the example codes have intentional problems?

not really, more that you need to understand the syntax and how to apply it to some classes

f/e

11:38 AM
but off course, they change it slightly from the examples, which makes it a pain if you simple 'don't get it'
I prefer to learn like wxpython in action did :P

I briefly used unittest (I think) for something and it was a little bit peculiar

yeesh db is crawling

someone upset it?

seems so
> enq: TX - row lock contention

ah

11:41 AM
anyway, I'm going to try and focus on reading again! bbl

11:59 AM
Look what just passed on the other channel:

Only works on Gaming, tested it in a question and answer, I wonder when this will be available on other sites...
It might roll out to us later, I'm checking if it's mentioned somewhere.

A: Add chat-like YouTube support to Stack Exchange

Jeff AtwoodYouTube links will be auto-converted to videos on a per-site basis. We have experimentally enabled this on gaming.se for now.

yeah sorry for that @TomWij :P

Wil
12:40 PM
@IvoFlipse TBH, many recent questions have been rephrased / slightly different not to be duplicate.. Maybe, until Windows 8 comes out, there won't be that many new ones!

1:27 PM
@nhinkle Would be nice (T-shirts).

@Wil sure there will be, there's still a ton of people who have to switch to windows-7 or the new office versions, they will have questions all the time

Wil
1:50 PM
@IvoFlipse A bit tongue in cheek, but I have only managed to check go on about 2/3 times a day in the past few days and haven't been able to answer anything!

tell me about it, I have only answered a hand full in the past half year

Q: Don't you think that it's time for some Stack Exchange shirts?

KronoSThis is for you Jeff. We're asking and begging and pleading (and maybe even willing to pay) for some shirts!!!! We know you've got to have some hiding under your bed on top of your PING PONG TABLE! Don't you think it's time to share with those that deserve it? Perhaps to the newly elected...

nice one :D
one problem is shipping to really foreign countries, like India :P

nice dig @KronoS :P

@IvoFlipse I know... but he gave me some ammo and I had to use it
@Sathya did you get your SSD installed?

2:05 PM
@KronoS nopes. waiting for my internal ->: ext drive converter

btw don't you have your MS interview today?

I'm surprised they didn't send you the enclosure... did you get a blue packaged one or purple @Sathya?
@IvoFlipse yep. 4pm AZ time...

good luck!

thanks... I'm a little nervous, but I'll just do my best and see what happens as that's all I can do...

@KronoS blue. They did a mistake by shipping me the desktop version

Wil
2:10 PM
@KronoS wooo.... GOOD LUCK... and if you get in... ask if they need a spy! :P (would kill for a job at MS!)

@Sathya oh that's why. It's the laptop upgrade kit that includes the enclosure
@Wil for Sure!

Q: Core i7 vs Phenom II x6

Gonzalo LarraldeHi there! I have to made a setup for a PC that's going to be used to do heavy processing with ... Microsoft Excel ( -.-' ) Yep, I know how non-intelligent is make heavy processing with Excel, but I tried to convince them to use a real database engine and there's no chance to do that... so, retu...

would that count as a shopping rec?

2:55 PM
@Kyle too localized/shopping

That's what I thought, I flagged the question on SF and said not migrate it here because it would be off topic, but they did anyway...

it's not surprising tbh, happens.
too localized / subjective / offtopic. counts for all 3 @Kyle

True I didn't even think of subjective
the 950 ranks so close to the x6 that the only way to really tell with that specific application would be to test it.

3:26 PM
Oh god. I said I'd never do this...

@Wil what's it about ?

Wil
Discovery coming in for its final landing

is it just me or is there no sound? @Wil

Sad day for NASA :(...
lol ^ looks like a drooling sad face

Wil
@Sathya No talking for a while - was commentary before - I think they have run out of script or something!

4:09 PM
yeah it's coming spurts

Wil
I remember visiting NASA a few years ago and my parents were arguing because we were really late in the day and thought there wasn't much point in going... we were on the last coach/bus tour and we got stopped... all police and stuff. We wondered what was going on, then they sealed the road and stuff and the shuttle was being towed right around us! (it landed the previous day)... so going late in the day was cool!

:)
I had paid a visit to Johnson Space Centre in Houston, TX when I was in Austin

Hey @Wil the reason you can't find HDMI recorders is because it violates the DMCA

Wil
@Sathya Nice!... I a pi$$ed off as I think most of my pictures were lost ages ago :(

4:14 PM
effectively the answer to that question about recording HDMI is "you're asking to break the law"

fyi

  Unicorns

temporary chat room with Joel
available to chat now at http://chat.stackexchange.com/rooms/346/unicorns

Wil
@drachenstern Serious? I am not so sure... there are many HDMI recorders out there, just no TV cards as there isn't really any point to them. If you think about it, a TV card is designed for watching TV and you can just buy a digital sat/ota card.... Professionals have been able to buy HDMI cards for years - they just are not designed as "tv cards"

will chat crash ? :D

@Wil as I understand it they are 1:1 devices and there is not a lot of room for media companies to let you record streams
there are some bootleg style devices that will let you scrape HDMI content off the wire, but the system is designed to be 1:1
You can buy all the HDMI output you want

Thanks for the awesome edits @LordTorgamus! :D

4:17 PM
finding HDMI input won't be cheap
That's my experience/take

@IvoFlipse You're welcome! When I saw the invitation I was afraid it was going to be "Stop spamming us with so much edit approval work, @LordTorgamus!"

For me if editor == @LordTorgamus --> click approve

exactly the opposite! indeed @Sathya :P

don't even bother reading the edits :P

Wil
4:19 PM
@drachenstern tbh, I can't comment much more - video/audio really isn't my speciality, so anything more from me will be a guess.
but then, that device I linked to - doesn't that do the job? :S

@Sathya Very kind of you to say.

I can't imagine it would break HDCP to allow you to record BD to your HD

I just wanted to let you know how awesome I think it is what your doing

For a while I was really into cleaning up MSO, but it started to feel like a losing battle. At least on SU it'll do some more good, even if it's just as losing a battle.

especially because I want to come up with something to have users do it more

4:22 PM
+1 to @IvoFlipse
there's another person - @yhw something, exahusts his mod flags almost every day

But if you see someone saying it's not going to be possible (I won't be answering, I'm not much of an answerer on SU ~ personal preference) I would give them a listen and see what they have to say. There's something to be done.

I can go through 30 mod flags on SO without too much difficulty, but I don't find as much on SU.
Probably just because it's a lower-volume site overall.

that's fine @LordTorgamus, I'd rather see you edit than flag
we're at 10% of SO

true

Wil
5:01 PM
And its down!
@oKtosiTe Thanks

5:25 PM
did the suggested edit box just get a light box? Yes, it did.

6:23 PM
howdy again all

1 hour later…
7:25 PM
@KronoS how did the Microsoft interview go or am I still too early?

@ivoflipse still too early. It's in 3.5 hours. Still in class for a few hours.

well then I think I'll have to wait until tomorrow :)

7:49 PM
test
anyone get that?

user30
Yes.

hmm
I can't connect to any stackexchange sites but somehow I'm still in chat..
tracert dies 8-9 hops down the line after edge1.newyork1

ha
I've had the problem several times before
never found a fix except for "wait until it fixes itself"... :/

ah ok still odd that i can talk in chat though

they're on different IP's
IIRC

7:52 PM
well that would explain it

hmmm, I've just discovered my USB stick has picked up a virus :/

ouch

I think I can guess from where as well

did you spread it?

nope, haven't used it since when I think it probably picked it up
thankfully
but, it means some guy in my Group Design module probably needs to have a look over his laptop...

7:55 PM
..and anyone else who plugged a thumb drive in to his laptop

yeah, but it was probably just me

that's lucky

indeed

phew SU is back, I feel whole again.

now I need to find out who he is so I can email him.... :/

7:56 PM
lol

8:51 PM
Hi everyone :D

howdy @BloodPhilia

What's up :D? @DMA57361

not much tbh... USB stick had a virus, nothing really alarming thou, read up like 20 lines for info ;)

.Okay xD
I'm trying to code an SMS gateway in Python

oh nice, with a particular purpose in mind?

8:54 PM
Well, someone needed something like that and it got me thinking... And that got me trying, which got me started just coding it xD
To no purpose really...

yup, sounds like a familiar pattern :)

Doesn't do much yet though, it just gets incoming messages from my Android phone and prints them to the command line

not bad, a solid start then?

Hope so :D
I got a small java code on my phone
that sends an HTTP GET to my computer
With the message and sender

hey folks

9:04 PM
hey

hi @nhinkle :)

how's it going?

not bad
I just finished Python Testing

i just finished a chem lecture where the prof talked about moore's law

interesting?

9:08 PM
not really, actually
it was nothing i didn't already know, and the rest of the lecture wasn't particularly interesting

lol, why do I get a sense they put you in the wrong year :P
btw you should ask @Rebecca for some stickers to put up on your work ;)

We want T-shirts, mouse mats, calendars, mugs, usb sticks....

nah not the wrong year. i'm in the honors chem class, which is quite challenging. the subject matter is cool, the professor just isn't very enthralling. last term we had an amazing professor - same class, but way more exciting, just because of how it was taught

I would like an SU mug

hmm i should put up some SE stickers at work. i'll ask my supervisor if it's ok for me to stick them around

9:10 PM
guess you're right there

i still want one of those t-shirts!

the downside is those folk who live in far away places

though an SU travel mug would be pretty sweet. ooh, i can put an SU/SE sticker on the mug I have, that would be good

that keeps them from sending them everywhere, because they would be discriminating between users :\
I fear the heat would cause it to come off though

user30
My SO shirt looks old and obsolete next to the new fancy looking SE shirts :(

9:11 PM
There should be an Interflora for such things: Intergifta

maybe. it's fairly well insulated though

I could stick it on my thermos can :P

Hey :)

@IvoFlipse if they sold them, users could pay for shipping. i'd buy one. although i'd try to persuade them i deserve a free one first :P

@ThomasMcDonald Never managed to cajole a SO T shirt out of anyone :(

9:12 PM
What've you been testing in Python @IvoFlipse?

they could @nhinkle, but those far away would have trouble no matter what
but indeed, I would pay for some quality swag
my SU t-shirt is looking stale too :(
though I have an area51 shirt as well

@IvoFlipse Well at least you've got one

just a book @BloodPhilia, so random code samples

Where did you get all those D:

didn't I invite you to Dropbox?

9:13 PM
my SU shirt looks a lot like one of the emperor's new clothing items
2

@IvoFlipse Okay :D I've been coding an SMS something

lol @nhinkle
@nhinkle if you can help set up blogs for other sites or help Kronos with the SU one, I'm sure they'll sent you one ;)

user30
Does @KronoS have one yet?!

they should ship @ChrisF a container full of shirts for his countless contributions :)

not sure which site i'd blog for, but i do want to get more involved with the SU one

9:14 PM
not sure, thought he won something with the contest though
mindstorm bots? ;)

brb - switching computers

and how to get into fake programming with it :P

that would be cool, actually, and i already do have a lot of code for it

@IvoFlipse Tell that to @Rebecca or @RobertC ;)

and I think you should make a bad ass one :P

does that one have 2 sensors?
so you could make it go faster
> 1 each: light sensor, sound sensor, ultrasonic sensor
darn nope

it has 4 sensor ports, and comes with 1 light sensor, 2 touch sensors, 1 ultrasonic distance sensor
an extra light sensor is $17
though we got it working fairly well with just the 1 sensor
basically, you were right in that there is a gradient, and that we could follow that. but with 2 it could definitely go faster

it would be funny to just let you built different kinds of bots :)
I think Mindstorm was recommended somewhere for getting kids into programming
@ChrisF I'm sure we can find a way to get them to sent you stuff with the new 12M

anybody a 'C' programmer:

 Fake Programmers

The room for elite Super Users who realize they know nothing a...

i wish i had a personal copy of LabVIEW
because i'd much rather use LabVIEW + NXT Addons than Robolab or RobotC

9:22 PM
doesn't it come included @nhinkle?
or perhaps there's a review version

@nhinkle you got a SHIRT!!!!

you could try contacting NI and ask them

i believe you have to purchase software for programming separately
@KronoS i did?

tell them you want to blog about it

10 mins ago, by nhinkle
my SU shirt looks a lot like one of the emperor's new clothing items

9:24 PM
LOLOLOL
"The Emperor's New Clothes" () is a short tale by Hans Christian Andersen about two weavers who promise an Emperor a new suit of clothes that are invisible to those unfit for their positions, stupid, or incompetent. When the Emperor parades before his subjects in his new clothes, a child cries out, "But he isn't wearing anything at all!" The tale has been translated into over a hundred languages. "The Emperor’s New Clothes" was first published with "The Little Mermaid" in Copenhagen by C.A. Reitzel on 7 April 1837 as the third and final installment of Andersen's Fairy Tales Told...
are you not familiar with this folktale?

realizes now he wasn't thinking... been programming too much

@IvoFlipse that's a good idea. Certainly cheaper than buying it. NI is a pretty supportive company, too. They offer a free 15 month version of LabVIEW every year to FRC teams

there's @RebeccaChernoff to help @ChrisF and @KronoS get t-shirts :P

My ears were burning. (:
What's up?

well I do think Mindstorm would be a nice thing for SU and you could always ask questions on SO if you need 'help' which might attract new crowd

9:27 PM
MSO is offline?

I was wondering if @KronoS's blog efforts are worth a t-shirt

@IvoFlipse, once finals are over, I'll look at contacting somebody at NI or LEGO or both about us getting an NXT for review

@RebeccaChernoff I was going to post my t-Shirt revolution question from MSO but it's down ATM

and @ChrisF's unchallenged level of participation on all sites should be worth a container load of shirts!
6
that would be great @nhinkle

@KronoS it might be related to the name switch from Stack Overflow Inc. to Stack Exchange Inc. Or it might just be regular downtime.

9:28 PM
hardware maintenance

@RebeccaChernoff: Thx for the stickers - arrived yesterday.

cool (:

9:45 PM
Hello, everyone.

hellow @MarkSzymanski :)

Hi @IvoFlipse. How are you?

doing fine
researching muscle properties to answer a question about weight lifting and shooting :P

Ah :P

3
Q: Does heavy lifting affect steadiness and precision?

GregI do a fair amount of weightlifting; in particular heavy compound lifts power-lifting style. I also compete on a target pistol team. Over the years, I've heard a number of coaches and marksmen recommend that serious shooters stay away from heavy lifting because it could affect arm stability/preci...

9:47 PM
finally posted a review of my laptop. i had it mostly written about a month ago, just never got around to finishing it up and posting

nice one :)
that kind of stuff could go on the SU blog too :)

I'm off. Talk to you all later

sure, if you think it would be a good fit, i'd be happy to repost it there
i could write a post about college laptops. i get asked about it a lot - "what laptop should i get for college?!" and combine it as a review of my laptop and commentary on what other people use and who likes what
i could incorporate some stuff from this post, though it's a bit out of date now, so i'd have to touch it up nathanhinkle.com/blog/…
ok - i have to go to class
talk to ya guys later

double posting is fine off course, it's your content after all :)
good luck! :)

Ugh twice in one day SU is down for me ;(
and I can still talk in chat XD

10:16 PM
its stackexchange chat @Kyle ;)

Yay
Hit 5K!
Will celebrate with a sticker!
(I'm easily pleased)

gratz!

Hello All!
Hi Ivo
how are you?

I'm fine

anybody here who is expert in detecting keyloggers in PC?

10:28 PM
still researching :P
nope, but it sounds like a great question ;)

@IvoFlipse: glad to hear that
ok
yeah are you familiar with security and stuff when it comes to emails or surfing over the net

I'm definitely not sadly

It depends on what you want to know ;)

Hmmm
How do I explain this...
Ok, someone spied my laptops
and used it against me

10:41 PM
I'm not sure I follow

The person was able to copy all the mails I wrote and I am wondering how he did it. Now I have the copy of all the emails he got from me. And I'm just wondering if any of you here is familiar with this header in an email. From:Myname <SMTP:myemail@email.com>

Sorry - you've gone beyond what I know. What e-mail client are you using?

I have 2 laptops
I am using xp and Mac. In xp I used outlook 2003 and in Mac I used Thunderbird.
And I have IMAP

Do you leave copies of your e-mails on the server?

With Imap this is not possible anymore
I guess...
