13:31
@OliverSalzburg the GTX650TI benchmarks are in!
13:42
Woah I'm so angry right now >:(
@OliverSalzburg :O
@OliverSalzburg I hope the result was a SU question with one of your answers
That would be the ultimate irony, hehe
@IvoFlipse No, it was a German blog article because he obviously uses German Google :P
I use the Dutch Google too, but mostly to get better localized results
The balls on that guy...
What was the problem?
How constructive
I bet he thought you just wanted to upsell them, by billing them for doing more work
sigh
13:52
The amount of disrespect is mind boggling :P
Not sure what you should do, I'm not sure if your boss would them him to piss off, because well the "client is king" BS
Ah, that helps :P
Well, I always try to handle that as professional as possible and let my boss deal with it.
But I would love to give that guy a piece of my mind :P
14:49
@IvoFlipse So about those benchmarks... g
I'm torn :P
On the one hand I enjoy gaming with the GTX460, Counter Strike works fine on the big screen even
So a 650ti would be a nice upgrade and be sufficient
But the prices for 2Gb models seem to go towards 180€ which make the difference with the 660ti seem a lot smaller :P
All reviews say it isn't fit for 1080p and higher though
@IvoFlipse Ouch
Heheh
Same problem here
No idea whether you got any of my complaints :P
Oh, the card has a R36 part. It must be good! :D
@OliverSalzburg What is that?
14:57
The Volkswagen Passat is a large family car marketed by Volkswagen through six design generations since 1973. Between the Volkswagen Golf / Volkswagen Jetta and the Volkswagen Phaeton in the current Volkswagen line-up, the Passat and its derivatives have been badged variously as Dasher, Santana, Quantum, Magotan, Corsar and Carat. The successive generations of the Passat carry the VW internal designations B1, B2, etc. In 2008, Volkswagen extended its range with the launch of the Passat CC, a "four-door coupé" version of the Passat. Volkswagen currently markets two variants of the Passa...
It's a certain type of car ;P
I would be more impressed if it were a RS6 :P
Indeed... :D
I really shouldn't be looking at that review. I just played a game yesterday and it ran fine
The game being Torchlight 2
I liked playing Diablo with my current card too
Worse, the card seems to get clobbered by an AMD card
And I'd prefer to stick to NVidia
I'm not an AMD fan. Wasn't an ATI fan when I was still doing 3D dev. I'll stick with that as well
I also still want to give CUDA a shot some day :P
If I ever learn how to program that crap
or work with 3D scans
Also the 660ti would have the benefit of completely replacing my 460
Which would keep the TDP in check
> The fact of the matter is that from a price/performance perspective the $149 GTX 650 Ti 1GB is not competitive enough with the $169 Radeon HD 7850 1GB.
:(
15:15
I've always been an Nvidia lover. One time I let my neighbor talk me into an ATI flagship card
That purchase was a mistake and I regret it
Screw it, I'm going to get a 660ti
even if it hurts my wallet
Stupid that the 650 ti comes with Assassins Creed, whereas the 660 comes with Borderland
And I can finally turn up ALL the dials
How much does it cost in EUR? Where are you ordering?
@OliverSalzburg Auch, I'm looking at a 1036€ bill
@IvoFlipse For the whole system?
Azerty, which is an online retailer that has pretty reasonable prices and good service. Besides there are no retailers nearby
Its 299
15:27
Woah
But I'm also getting a NAS + 2*2tb disk, upgrade the ram and add a SSD :P
Damn
Yeah, that's a sweet upgrade
Well getting, that's what I want to get :P
I need more storage, I can't run my experiments with my current space
I want a SSD for Windows 8 that has sufficient space
and I'm getting seriously memory limited by Chrome + Python
Oh and I need a mouse :P
@IvoFlipse I feel your pain!
Any suggestions?
15:29
That's all Chrome!
Whatever the hell spawned so many processes is beyond me
Find the tab that uses 430MB and close it! :D
I always have a ton of video's open too
Well, 16 GB is not enough RAM. I guess we can agree on that :D
The top tab seems Gmail, then Edx Python, Google Docs (huge 100+ page report), Flash, Another course, chat, another course, another course :P
@OliverSalzburg Yeah, you convinced me about the quad channel
Not sure whether I'll have to upgrade to Haswell after reading some platform previews
15:32
@IvoFlipse I did? I remember reading some quad channel talk in Root Access...
But by then my CPU will be nearly 2 years old
@OliverSalzburg Ah, well might have been someone else
And you telling me I needed 32 :P
Possibly :)
I wonder if anything about those prices is about to change
Though had I bought it 2 weeks ago, it would have saved me 2% taxes :P
The last time I waited a week to purchase my hardware, there was a flood in Indonesia and HDD prices jumped like 500%...
Yeah, I had that last year
15:39
Most likely the same natural disaster ;D
They're going to check for cheating at my Scala course :(
How on earth am I going to learn Scala without any help
and their forums suck at getting help
@IvoFlipse Sounds reasonable
Do you have any idea how to write that code?
Granted I didn't read his whole book
but getting the syntax right is such a pain in the ass
@IvoFlipse I don't even know what Scala is about
functional programming
15:52
@IvoFlipse Well, I know that much :D
But I never really had anything where it seemed beneficial to apply functional programming
More a mindset that comes with it
Good point
Like I write a piece of code that applies a function to each item in a list or array
In functional programming, you often end up writing very abstract functions that could easily be applied to similar problems
without having to tweak your code for every special little variation
And its a nice exercise in computational mathematics
In the above example we had to write our own set operations, like union and intersect
This week we had to write a filter that would find the most retweeted tweets about apple and google
Heh. I just had an interesting, short problem. Photoshop would not accept any drag & drop operation even though I was sure that it normally does.
Did you try turning it on and off?
15:59
Luckily I'm aware of what the cause usually is (permission context)
In the reversed order though :P
@OliverSalzburg Which means?
The .psd I had opened, I searched for that using Everything. Everything is started with administrative privileges. So when I clicked on the file in Everything, Photoshop was started with adminstrative privileges
Thus, I wasn't able to drag&drop to it from an application that ran in a non-elevated context (like Windows Explorer)
Ah, I never have such problems :P
So I just had to restart Photoshop and re-open the file
Voila :) I just run as admin, though I probably shouldn't and/or don't have to
16:03
It's fun when cause and effect are so far from each other :D
For varying definitions of "fun"
16:44
sup people

1 hour later…
18:04
@AlanTuring apparently not a lot
I'm checking out hardware, that's what's up
I'm building, rebuilding, refactoring, rebuilding... fixing bugs, rebuilding...
sitting in a corner in the fetal position rocking back and forth and whimpering
@NathanWheeler What task do you have then?
I'm redesigning a central part of the way our platform functions
it's not bad, just... touchy
18:23
Well I bit the bullet and bought the new hardware :D
and a few method names are entirely misleading... like SerializeFromXml... which you would expect to take values from XML and put them into properties in an object... actually just takes the XmlNode, drops it into a property in the object, then all the rest of the properties in the object use xpaths on that XmlNode to get their values
(sorry, got interrupted twice before I could finish typing that)
really messes you up if you go to replace that node with something else, especially from another document
@IvoFlipse what new hardware did you buy?
That has a pretty high price tag for not being a complete computer :P
At least when you don't have a big company paying it for you
19:06
yeah, looks nice though
I hope so too
what does "vaste schijf" translate to?
The RAM should keep me save for the next CPU upgrade too, I don't expect next gen (Haswell CPUs) mobo's to support 32+ Gb of ram
What else has 2 tb? :P
I assume "grafische kaart" is "graphics card"
Vast = hard or actually solid. But its meant to indicate hard disks
yup
19:09
ok, hard disk... I knew what it was indicating, but couldn't figure out the words
So its a NAS + 2 * 2tb HDDs + 256Gb SSD + 32 Gb RAM + GPU
(my general problem with foreign language... I know what you're talking about but I have no idea what the words are that you're using)
@NathanWheeler I have foreign languages too you know ;P
makes it impossible to carry on a conversation for me
Just less I guess
19:12
well... english is almost universal at this point
In Spanish I can't hear where one word ends and the next one starts, which makes it hard to understand
@NathanWheeler I wouldn't mind if the whole world would start speaking English
although honestly, english is really poorly structured as languages go
French has to go, even though its pretty structured
Not a lot of exceptions, at least not in the French they teach in school
Spanish sucks too, but is pretty widely spread
well Chinese... :P
19:14
yeah, spanish runs a close second or third probably for universal language
as for most people having a native language, some asian or *nese (japanese, chinese, taiwanese, etc.) probably takes it
The following tables list the 100 largest languages in the world by native speakers, roughly corresponding to languages with more than seven and a half million estimated native speakers, ordered by number of speakers. Two lists are given, which disagree in many particulars; other estimates will vary again, and the numbers should be taken as no more than an indication of the rough order of magnitude of a linguistic community. Since the definition of a single language is to some extent arbitrary, some mutually intelligible idioms with separate national standards or self-identification...
HAH! I was RIGHT :)
Well that's native speakers only
Hmm forgot about Portuguese
yeah... Mandarin is Chin*ese*
/me must return to work
not getting anything done today
:)
Good luck :)
19:25
@IvoFlipse That blows my mind!
What part of it does?
Mostly the part that German is 11th and above French and Italian
I don't really know what I expected, but it's surprising
And Spanish is looking like a really attractive language to learn right now :D
@OliverSalzburg 80 million inhabitants in Germany alone, add about 6 + 3-4 for Austria and Switzerland
@IvoFlipse I assumed French and/or Italian to be spoken in more countries globally, I guess.
Also the neighboring countries can speak German (me included)
Where do they speak Italian except for Italy?
Right, Sweiss and this one city-state :P
19:34
I guess I was thinking of the Roman empire :D
@OliverSalzburg Then a lot of people would be speaking Mongolian
Any experience with Android tablets btw?
@IvoFlipse Some
Meaning we have one in our household
Buying the screen in Korea made me addicted to buying cheap crap from Asia :P
So I'm eyeing some cheap ass tablet to replace our iPad
They are approaching a spec point where anyone can make a decent tablet
19:38
The Samsung firmware on ours sucks, that's for sure :P
Which is it?
I have a Galaxy Nexus, so I don't have to use their ugly skin
It's the Galaxy Tab AFAIK
I wanted to remove it from my Mom's Galaxy SIII but because my sister helps her if she can't find something (who has a SII), I wasn't allowed to do so :P
Girlfriend has the SGS3 as well. I hate it :P
Well, I hate the Android version they put on it. And she won't let me put another ROM on it. Which is probably for the best :D
20:20
why would you buy a barracuda
they are a notorious waste of money
much better to buy 2 drives and put them in RAID 0, you get the same performance at half the cost
20:33
Actually that's the price of 2 drives
and I went with western digital, because they were in stock
whats the price of 2drives?
still 90 euros for that is a lot
wait..
im confusing barracuda's with velociraptors lmfao
im an idiot
20:53
100 because I took what was available
its for a nap and I only need space, not speed
