@Makyen Please add The Great Outdoors (main, main experimental, meta, meta experimental, no offensive mask) for Smoke Detector reports in rooms.yml. Thanks.

user435118
@Makyen Actually, this regex doesn't catch the title at all if there is an s present anywhere before support.

@Xnero While it does have that benefit, there are other benefits: A) it doesn't perform a look-behind on every character; B) will also match in bodies, which would have added extra weight to a couple of the reports; C) matches more posts (5 instead of 4).
Yes, it doesn't match if there's an "s" prior to support, however none of the existing examples which your regex was matching have such an "s". However, it might be reasonable to make the "support" part optional, as there are a few additional substantially older spam messages which would be caught.

user435118
@Makyen I assume performance can be measured by the number of "steps" on regex101.com?

@Xnero To an extent. That can give you a feel for what it might be, but you'd really have to run tests with the regex package SD uses in Python to have good numbers.

user435118
@Makyen What package does SD use?

@Xnero The regex package.

user435118

@Makyen So will the number of "steps" suffice in simple terms?

3:00 PM
Makyen/EC2-linux: Executing automatic scheduled reboot.

@Xnero As I said before, it will probably give you a feel for what might be the case. It gives you a decent idea of the performance is for that regex engine, which may be a reasonable feel for what the performance of other engines might be.

user435118
@Makyen Is there an easy way in Python to measure the performance of the regex package for a specific regex?

3:11 PM
I believe the performance of a regex will depend on the content it's being run on, which makes it especially tricky to fully know the performance of a regex -- the regex alone isn't the full picture.

@Xnero No, there isn't an easy way.

@Xnero Yeah there are lots of performance testing tools to allow you to find the performance curve of a function

@Xnero Thank you for the reminder. While I'll probably get to it eventually, this seems like something for which you could submit a PR, if you want it to happen quicker.

user435118
@thesecretmaster I meant to test it on specific content.

Oh, if you want to find the performance of a regex on a specific target string, you could get a decent idea by running it a few hundred/thousand times and averaging the runtimes. That's not going to be perfect (as Makyen said, performance testing is often challenging to get right and is probably a bit too complex for a chat conversation) but it'll get you a ballpark idea.

3:18 PM
@Xnero As has been mentioned by others, yes, it's possible to do so, there are even packages/frameworks available that help make it easier. However, as has also been mentioned, the performance of a regex is significantly dependent on the text which it is being applied to, with, potentially, differences in performance by several orders of magnitude.

I'm afraid there's not really a simple answer to that one. If I were doing it, I'd download the MS dump and run it on a few thousands of posts, but that's only going to give a vague idea.

@thesecretmaster I remember a CR question had one of those a while back. (unintentionally)

user435118
@thesecretmaster I'm not going to do that every time I write a regex watch...

@Xnero You have to measure the regex watch to know the performance.

Y'know, honestly might be a fun project to go through the lists and try to compare cost for each regex. Not the most useful/practical project, but could be fun.
@Xnero I didn't think we had any rules requiring performance testing?
To be totally honest, the best way to get an idea of performance would probably be to ask people who have more experience working with SD and writing regexs for it

3:27 PM
@thesecretmaster I've actually done that a bit in order to find ones where we were experiencing performance issues. While I didn't actually test each one separately, I broke it down into bins of 64 entries and looked for bins which were taking substantially more time. From localizing them to that extent, it was usually fairly easy to find the regex which was problematic.

Oh cool! I was thinking that there might be a few regexes that are disproportionately expensive compared to the rest and digging them up might be useful, but glad to hear that's already been done :P

user435118
@thesecretmaster Well, Makyen rejected my PR because of performance issues as one of the reasons.

Is it just the positive look-behind that isn't preferred? I'm afraid the "performance" tangent might not be as useful as guidance on regex styles.
(I'm on regex101 learning about positive look-behinds)

@Xnero Cool, so Makyen can probably tell you what the issue they see is (I suspect they already have). And you should listen to them, and make adjustments as they suggest. They have a lot of experience writing regexes for SD and are probably one of the most knowledgeable people here in that area.

[ SmokeDetector | MS ] Potentially problematic ns configuration in body (1): What impact do text-based accordion elements have on SEO? by Grace wilson on wordpress.SE

@Xnero As an example, we've had regexes in the list which normally take milliseconds to run, or less, but which have ballooned to taking tens of minutes to complete when they happen to be run against specific posts. In the past, this has resulted in taking down SD instances, even, progressively, all instances. At this point, the CI testing includes more input cases, which would at least fail for those specific regexes, and ones which might be somewhat similar.
However, those tests don't guarantee that entries which pass are really not going to ever have a problem.

@JeffSchaller Look-arounds tend to be expensive, particularly when they are variable length, primarily because people tend to use them in ways which make the cost multiplicative (i.e. used in places where they are going to be tested many times). In general, look-arounds are most expensive when they are used as the first thing in the regular expression, because then they are tested at every character, or, in our case for the watchlist/keyword blacklist, at every \b (including Unicode \b).
Look-arounds are substantially less expensive (up to an order of magnitude, or so, more or less) if they are put at least a few or several characters into the regex, so that they end up being tested fewer times. There's some more information and a couple of examples here.
