[ SmokeDetector | MS ] Potentially bad keyword in username (1): Show title bar on hover in VB6 by dsfsfkjdkldsjfklkjkl on stackoverflow.com

@RyanM So if you have lots of rep you can spam freely without worrying about SD picking up on it?
that seems... silly

1:59 AM
I believe it only protects you from experimental reasons catching your post. Anything non-experimental (being a blacklisted user, posting a bad keyword/blacklisted website) will still report it here.

@Spevacus No, that's not correct.

There is a rep limit? I agree that high rep should make it less likely to be spam, but it shouldn't completely eliminate your post from being picked up.

After all, even high rep users get hacked sometimes...

@SmokeDetector fp- "Looks like an honest question."

Oct 14 '20 at 19:06, by Makyen
@Machavity The posts are excluded from the bad/potentially bad detections due to the user having too much rep.

2:00 AM
@SmokeDetector fpu-

@Nick Yes, with like...5 asterisks. You can still be blacklisted as a user, and the rep required for different rules varies. But for instance, my SO rep excludes me from every rule except actually blacklisting my user ID.
But also, getting enough rep to evade the rules is hard.
and then it only takes someone noticing one post to burn it all down.

What's the threshold? I don't actually know off hand.

The threshold to evade all findspam rules is 10001 (10000 is the highest max of any rule in the file). The thresholds for individual rules can be found by searching here for max_rep (the default is 1).

is there any way to see what percentage of posts that would've been detected get ignored due to the rep limit?

What's the point of having a limit? I mean, other than not having to filter all of Gordon's posts?

2:03 AM
actually i'm guessing the rule just doesn't get checked if they have enough rep so i guess the stats wouldn't be known

Reduce FP. High-rep users probably aren't abusers.

But that user had 45 rep.... which isn't that hard to get. 45 rep shouldn't filter out a watched_keywords.txt check.

He had 143 at the time I reported that post.
Once the post got nuked he lost 100 from the spam flag penalty.

@hyper-neutrino probably not (they're just discarded) although maybe an SD dev knows something I don't

@RyanM that would imply it's good to scan posts by high-rep users so that you can see the fps and change the system to avoid them...

2:07 AM
Think about it this way. If a user over 100 rep says "Keto" in a health-related answer, we probably don't want to report on that, as the likelihood that they got 100 rep and decided to spam keto products is very low. Similarly, we wouldn't want to stop watching the keyword "keto" considering it's a very high TP rate keyword (last I checked, anyway)

@Nick We already have way too many FP. There are a number of easy ways we could reduce FP dramatically, including discarding anything that looks anything like code. Here's a link to a simple regex that is over 99% FP.
and that's over 99% FP on posts that were reported

@RyanM Link's a tad borked for me.

bahhhh

Ryan's a sheep confirmed ;)

I forgot that something about bit.ly and metasmoke combined = sadness
correct link ^

2:10 AM
@RyanM I'm thinking more in terms of seeing the fps that come from posts by high rep users and then assuming they are fps for all users

@Nick But high rep users and 1-rep users are very different groups of people. Compare this vs this.
High-rep users discuss keto legitimately pretty often. But if it's from someone under our thresholds, it's almost always spam.

even 2-rep and 1-rep users are drastically different groups, I'd say (not every user in each, I mean the groups in general) (however you get 2 rep exactly)

@hyper-neutrino I appreciate that you anticipated the snarky remark I was going to make and pre-empted it.

@RyanM great minds think alike, as they say :P

get an accepted answer that then gets 7 downvotes? :-p
...probably unlikely.

2:15 AM
I don't consider 135 rep to be high rep. It would be possible to form a voting ring, and then before the reversing script runs, spam with that account and not get caught by SD. Maybe the limit should be something above 200 (because that's the daily limit)? Just a thought.

unlikely though i have seen quite negatively scored accepted answers
it's quite rare though

@10Rep Remember the human element in this. One person seeing that blatantly spammy post would be enough to send it to the abyss.

@RyanM fair comment. I guess its hard to filter those fps from fps which genuinely are for all users

@10Rep i think it'd be considerably more effort to build that large of a voting ring and bypass this threshold
because you'd need the user to post an answer
which then 13 socks upvote
before anyone notices anything wrong

Also those rings are suuuuper obvious

2:16 AM
(and the answer has to be legit otherwise the user gets blacklisted and ended instantly)
and then they can spam
and all this work, and if someone just runs !!/report they're done for xD

I haven't had the pleasure of catching such a voting ring yet... but that blatant post passed SD which is a little worrying...

Spammers aren't that smart. If you're going to build a voting ring to evade Smoke Detector of all things, you're probably forgetting site moderators and power users. Even then, why use that ring to spam of all things?

Whenever I add something to the lists I search the network for it first. And sometimes I find things. And then I report the lot of them.
Haven't found any voting rings in a while though

Are there any examples of voting rings? I'm not exactly sure how one would catch a voting ring.

i haven't found any voting rings in my time; i only detected one sock user with two socks but it was from two months before i even found out, and i only noticed cuz the user made me suspicious in chat :P
granted voting rings are probably more common on sites like SO

2:19 AM
@lyxal Suspiciously high scores on terrible posts, and then moving outward from there.

Eh. As an SO example, if you see a particularly bad answer with a surprising amount of upvotes (and a bunch of downvotes) then it's worth getting slightly concerned. When I say "bad" I truly do mean little effort, barely answers the question if at all. Something nobody should think about upvoting.

@RyanM but how do you tell who is part of a certain ring?

@Spevacus sadly, that happens on SO all the time! and I'm pretty sure most of them aren't voting rings...

Easier to move outward if you're a moderator and can see votes, but...usually people aren't very good at hiding and the socks interact with each other. Often quite a lot.

@lyxal One time I saw a question with more upvotes than views. I believe another user handled it (not sure, it was a long time ago).

2:22 AM
anyway yeah i guess all i'll say is... we have our ways of knowing. lol :)

I thought mods used the power they got from the 6 week training they have in an undisclosed location to detect voting rings!

@10Rep shhh where did you find out about our secrets from

6-8 week training? :)

i've only seen users with like a few socks for upvoting that i've either encountered / heard of (on my site) but i think there are sometimes very large voting rings on sites like SO. can't remember / not sure if i should say exactly how many but... it's a lot, lol

There were users who lost thousands of rep after the CMs got through their ticket backlog

2:25 AM
I wonder if it's possible to use SEDE to find out how many questions have more votes than views. That'd be a useful starting point for sure.

I remember seeing some screenshots in SOCVR from that. Quite the sight.
That... Sounds like it would be impossible, no?

I've never found a ring that big, but I've certainly caused people to lose hundreds of rep.
@Spevacus I mean you can vote with the API but I doubt voting rings are doing that.
More likely it happens because of caching (views are cached and only updated every 15 minutes or something)

long story short i got my account deleted once due to miscommunication, but when that happened i caused around 100-200 rep loss to multiple users, totalling at least a thousand or two rep across my site :P
and i was voting legitimately; i can imagine how much rep someone could lose from a ring getting destroyed

ha. Yeah, I've wondered how much rep people would lose if my account was deleted. Probably a decent chunk on Law, there aren't that many active posters and I have 654 live upvotes.

iirc only votes from the last 60 days are reverted otherwise the effect would've been.. rather catastrophic :p

2:29 AM
@hyper-neutrino that's lucky. Otherwise 78.5k would suddenly disappear from code golf if my account got deleted ;p

now that i think about it, several users voluntarily requested account deletion following the events of late 2019; i don't remember that having much effect, at least on my account; are those handled differently in terms of votes?
@lyxal i wonder how much the actual number would be. only one way to find out....... :)

And staff can choose whether to actually deduct rep from others. They'd probably choose not to if it's a user with a lot of votes who voted legitimately.

It depends on how high of a reputation they were. I believe high-rep user's votes are preserved when they request account deletion.

As I understand it, users with "an impactful number of votes" (defined vaguely) are given to CMs for transferring of votes to Community after confirming there was no abuse.

oh. that makes sense

2:30 AM
With...one small asterisk to that...if they have no posts or other non-voting activity, because no one thought to check for that.

lol, what

@SmokeDetector tp- quickly self-deleted in under 2 minutes though
@hyper-neutrino was that to me or that post? :-p

They thought that would work as an excuse? lol

2:32 AM
@RyanM that was to the reported post :P

Why would they test characters on StackOverflow of all places? That's clearly an excuse to post garbage :D

there is one user i know of who has i think no posts or activity who would definitely cause a huge rep diff if they suddenly vanished, lol
at least based on their profile's (public) 'votes cast' count
gnat has absolutely no activity but has cast 22 thousand votes, lmao

Imagine if this user got deleted, how much rep gain there would be

Yep, same person I was thinking of. 2K votes on Law
@10Rep Very little, I suspect. Those are almost certainly mostly on deleted posts.

@hyper-neutrino gnat has voted on almost every single post on MSO, amazingly. 30,000 of the 40,00 there.

2:35 AM
gnat takes "Voting is important!" to the next level.

oh wait, that user with 13k downvotes actually not the user I thought you were going to link
I was thinking of this user with 31k

holy crap o.O lol

Note that the vote cap per day is 40.

how do they even find so much stuff to downvote lol

On the php tag?

2:40 AM
lol

python tag: am I a joke to you? the fgitw game on python is very high sadly.

@hyper-neutrino No, all votes are reversed. There is no statute of limitations. We've deleted sockpuppets which have been active for years, and/or which have had thousands of votes, and/or sock rings with >100 sockpuppet accounts (I haven't personally found anything with that many socks). If there are more than X votes, then the choice to keep or remove the votes is kicked up to a CM.

@Makyen what about deletion for underage users?
for sockpuppets that makes sense.

@hyper-neutrino You know, I'm genuinely unsure. They managed to find quite a lot of really terrible posts before they even had access to review queues.

i wasn't a sock though so i think it was only 60 days? in any case users would've lost more than a couple hundred rep if all of my votes have been invalidated

2:41 AM
Look upon php gold badgers as though they are war veterans. They have trudged through some serious stuff, I imagine...

@hyper-neutrino Above C votes, the disposition of the votes is in the hands of the CMs.

I haven't been as generous with my downvotes but I have vtc'd almost 12000 posts in 3 years, an awful lot of which have been in php

huh. i wonder why any of my votes were invalidated then

I see more bad answers than bad questions, but for obvious reasons I can't downvote them all... I've lost a 100 rep to that already.

3845/4344 of my SO downvotes are on deleted posts. The percentage would be higher if I stopped downvoting additional posts and waited for the Roomba to clean up more of them as well.

2:51 AM
just curious (i'll move this to a private room if it shouldn't be public) if someone were to hack into and gain control of the entirety of charcoal (ignoring how practical that would be) (so this means full control and the admins can't shut it down or anything) and started using it for abuse (like nuking things with autoflaggers, etc), how quickly would it be able to be stopped?

Considering the local machine is near Thomas Ward... However long it'd take for him to wake up and turn it off. If they decided to host their own, they'd need a bunch of creds that are closely guarded, and even then, the API key could be revoked.
We needn't worry about any of that though. Mr. Ward's quite the security expert, iirc. Fueled only by caffeine and spite, he guards the realms of smoke.

ah. that's nice :p

@Nick BTW, for a single case of undisclosed affiliation, tp is the preferred feedback, i.e. blacklisting the user with tpu is not necessary. @Nick I wouldn't set much store by the 18 months.
