[ SmokeDetector | MS ] Shortened url in body (45): Matching csv columns in pandas ✏️ by Rabi on stackoverflow.com

@JeffSchaller That should work, but for efficiency reasons (and a slight change to what the lookbehind matches, so it would still catch, say, "en retarded" or whatever), I'd go with retard(?:ed)?s?(?<!en\s++retard) See Makyen's posts on the matter: chat.stackexchange.com/transcript/11540?m=55789726

fp- feedback received

@RyanM thanks for the improvement! That was the first negative look-behind I've ever written, so I appreciate the feedback. Do you have an extra plus (+) between the \s+ there?

[ SmokeDetector | MS ] Potentially bad asn for hostname in body (1): Issue with a website contact number showing on my desktop yet not on my phone by Max Mikelson on stackoverflow.com

@JeffSchaller The second "+" makes it greedy

7:08 PM
That, but also I forgot it was in a lookbehind or I probably wouldn't have done that.

@NobodyNada thank you!
well, I leave it up to you all if you'd like to unwatch triplee's original in favor of that one. It's a very modest improvement -- nothing to write home about

Specifically, it's a possessive quantifier. Basically, because I know that it's not going to get any use out of backtracking over spaces, it can be more efficient.
However, non-fixed-length lookbehinds are incompatible with many/most regex engines
including MS search
so I'd actually go with retard(?:ed)?s?(?<!en retard)

It's also been ... several... years since I learned French, so it's possible I'm missing other variations.
@RyanM I like that, because it's pretty explicitly what I was going after

BTW: The en portion should have a \b, so, \ben. If it doesn't you'll get unintended matches on other words.

oh, good point.
so retard(?:ed)?s?(?<!\ben retard)
(...no offense to any bens)

[ SmokeDetector | MS ] Potentially problematic ns configuration in body (1): Calling PowerShell from PHP using IIS on network shared folders by Rafael Guimaraes on stackoverflow.com

It seems that in at least some cases, the regex engine (on regex101, at least) is clever enough not to get any efficiency gains out of possessive quantifiers.

@RyanM The negative look-behind should be after the first d.

@JeffSchaller Good chance eventually we'll watch the entire domain.

@Mast fair enough; I was half expecting it to say "already caught by https://sex"

fp feedback received

@RyanM As minor optimizations, both ? could be possessive, but it's not going to really save much (i.e. they are quite short and the appended bookending doesn't give a lot of options for the regex engine to backtrack there).

@Makyen that part was intentional; presumably "en retarded" is not legitimate French
@NobodyNada I scripted that :-p
it also does the space -> [\W_]*+ transformation

7:59 PM
everything is nicer with scripting :)

I need to update it with Makyen's search bookmarklet updates, though

@RyanM I don't know French, so I don't know about that. With the look-behind after the (?:ed)?s?, that means the look-behind will be processed at times where it's known in advance that it's not possible for it to match (i.e. after a "ed" or "s"). I guess if you wanted to be more complete, it could be: retard(?!\b(?<=\ben[\W_]*+retard\b))(?:ed)?+s?+.

@SmokeDetector tp- User was destroyed, post was moderator spam-flag deleted, and the following comment was left by an SE employee: "Do not use our site as an image upload host." While not inherently spam, this is the kind of thing a system-level-block should catch, imo.

@Makyen Note that the \b after "retard" and before "en" also work for $ and ^. It's the \W$ and ^\W transitions which are not considered \b by the regex engine which SD uses.
