[ SmokeDetector | MS ] Potentially bad ip for hostname in body (1): Hello, two questions about sklearn.Pipeline with custom transformer for timeseries ✏️ by valnem on stackoverflow.com

@Siguza depending on what you're trying to remove, and in what repository, it might not be possible

@ThomasWard It's my real first name + first letter of my last name, in a comment on an issue (because someone used the reply-by-email function).

4:00 PM
@Siguza needs the one who replied to edit the comment, I can try but you're not giving useful information about which repo and issue you're looking at
your name also isn't necessarily PII in that case.

done but my point still stands

That my name isn't PII?
And could I ask you to also delete the old revision of the comment, please?

that I can't do
you need GH Staff to trim history
but i can delete the entire comment
this said
your first name and last initial aren't enough to ID you technically in the real world
so I'm not entirely sure that falls under "personal information that absolutely needs pruned"

You should be able to open the revision, and then have Options > Delete revision from history - at least I do, on repos I'm a member of.
And I understand that even if it may not fall into that category legally, there have been people who managed to find out where I live from that information. Thankfully they've been small in numbers and with no bad intentions so far, but I'd like to try and mitigate that in the future as much as possible.
(I see you deleted the entire comment. That works too, thank you.)

4:18 PM
doesn't give me the revision history to delete there, so
may be due to age :P

Or maybe only for repo owners then? Either way, thanks.

@Spevacus You don't have blacklist manager privileges, but I've created PR#4684 for you.
PR#4684 ("Spevacus: Watch bagyatech\.com") opened by SmokeDetector

@ThomasWard While I understand the issue about PII, that comment was, presumably, our only indication that user had agreed to license their contributions. Without that comment, the only indications (at least in that issue) that they have agreed are the fact that their name is checked in the initial message, which means very little, and nothing from a legal standpoint, and a deleted comment, which could have said anything.

@Makyen well, TO BE FAIR, it can be implied that because they're checkboxed AND the issue was lcosed a long time ago they did agree, but you're not wrong
this said
I don't consider first name and first initial of last name PII enough (for next time)
@Makyen you should be calling out @Siguza for making it an issue :p
since it gave me no way to delete just a single comment revision i had no other option. so either Siguza needs to make it less of an issue in their PoV
or...

or we could not worry too much about how protective or not folks are of their privacy

@ArtOfCode which is a razor-edge sword too.
as i said already now (three times); the leak of a first name and last initial does not constitute a legal PII breach in many jurisdictions
:P
so
FOR THE FUTURE: if it's just your name, don't bother requesting. If it's more than your name that's a different issue.
@user12986714 do us a favor: attempt to email security@charcoal-se.org - we think we fixed one of the concerns about your email bouncing.

6:04 PM
@ThomasWard No, .id is a TLD, Indonesia. What I meant was that the domain was not intended to resolve to an IP. It's purely coincidental that it happens to resolve.
Is there a better description for this happening?
In hindsight it wasn't particularly clear.

@Mast "not a domain" is the proper one then
but p.id (which is a valid domain) is not an IP address ;)

@ThomasWard eh, if people would rather not have their names online and we can help them, there's no good reason not to unless it causes us some harm in some way

@ThomasWard Yea, naturally.

@ArtOfCode well TO BE FAIR

@ThomasWard I don't have a problem with the request to remove what someone considers to be PII, as long as it's at least debatable that it is. I just feel we don't need to treat getting rid of it as something that needs to be done immediately, when it's already been on display for 4+ years. In this case, we just needed to follow up and see if we could get the licensing issue handled. It has been, so we're all good now.

i did edit it out
then they wanted the history removed
which is impossible to do with 'member' access
it needs owner access for purging edits
so
unless you want to give owner rights... that means PII removalr equests can only be handled by admins
which means... one of you guys has to be here all the time :p

It's not time-critical, right?
Shoot them a message, purge when convenient.

@ThomasWard nah, we can just handle PII removal as we're available
even actual PII - if someone else can take initial steps like editing, that's fine, an admin can do the cleanup later

6:21 PM
@ThomasWard I don't see any way to do it, other than to delete the comment. As far as I know, only GitHub employees (devs?) can delete individual revisions.

well
2 hours ago, by Siguza
You should be able to open the revision, and then have Options > Delete revision from history - at least I do, on repos I'm a member of.
^ suggests otherwise

@ThomasWard That doesn't appear to be available on older revisions.

then that's going back to what i said about the age being too old
... can we stop pinging me 'bout this now...? :|
it's starting to feel like y'all picking on me...

Reports like these fall under the "Contains only garbage" guidance here, and are generally given a "TP" feedback. The flag type can be a bit nuanced, the guidance goes into a bit of depth with that, though.

Gotcha.

@Daniil just a general piece of feedback for your PRs: in the future, could you fill in helpful commit messages instead of just the default "Update gitmanager.py"? Already there's been a few times where I'm going through a blame and I see a bunch of "Update ..."'s, which is very much not helpful -- I don't need to be reminded of the name of the file I'm already looking at
4
See How to Write a Git Commit Message -- a good commit message should be a short summary of exactly what the change does and why, with a more detailed rationale in the commit body if necessary

I'm trying to use Conventional Commits

@ArtOfCode ooh, that's a nice one
